Catching Up With Matt & Phil
Speaker 1So , phil , yeah , I feel like last episode we just talked a ton about me . Is that what we normally do ? Yeah , oh gosh . No , I don't know if we do or not , but I think we can talk about you again . You don't want to talk about you . What my uncle used to say used to say , like I am tired of hearing myself talk what do you think of me ? Oh , what do I think of you ? Is that a joke ? Did I miss a joke ? Again ? As always , roll the intro , oh gosh .
Widow Jane Decadence Introduction
Speaker 1Welcome to whiskey bits with matt and phil , where we sip on everyday whiskeys and find the funny in our everyday lives . What did you bring today ? So today we've got the Widow Jane Decadence . Oh , it sounds so fancy . It is so fancy . Age to perfection .
Speaker 1This is a blend of straight bourbon whiskeys finished in maple syrup barrels . This is the Widow Jane . Come on , this is batch 29 , bottle 588 . That makes perfect sense . Has a date of 2024 . This is date 2024 . That's just the whole year . 45 and a half percent .
Speaker 1So this is a 91 proof 91 . Wow , so it's really low proof 91 . Wow , so it's really low proof 91 . Yeah , yeah , I mean the lowest you can get and still be bourbon , it's 80 . Oh , you're right . Yeah , so this is 90 . One One . Hey , nice shirt . Can I tell you something ? Yep , there is no other word to describe this Decadence .
Speaker 1We took some of our legendary barrels and finished them . Sorry , let me read that again . Wait , hold on , you're reading that . That's what they said . There's no other word , widow Jane . Decadence Okay , there's no other word to describe this . We took some of our legendary bourbons and finished them in barrels that held New York's finest artisanal . Why is artisanal so funny ? I don't know . It's good Artisanal maple syrup from Crown Maple . The result is a rich , creamy , smooth and slightly sweet mouthful of whiskey flavor . That is way beyond good . Way beyond good . It's decadent . Hey , I like it . Like you know , I I will say , but it's also aged to perfection . It is . How did they get that ? How did they age it to perfection ? Well , wait till you try it , all right .
Speaker 1So this again , we're , you know , season two . We're starting off with maybe a little bit harder to find whiskeys , break some rules that are still out there and like , hey , we're going to try it because we found it . And if you are wondering , should I drop $80 on that bottle of whiskey ? I want to be able to tell you whether or not you should , right . So that's what we're going to do here . We're going to try some that are a little bit harder to find , but you do see these on the shelf . They do pop up every once in a while . That's a good point . Uh , I like that . That's a good theme . You like that ? I do , I like that .
Speaker 1Oh , whoa , whoa , whoa , hey easy , whoa , hey , hey , easy bud , wow , whoa . You know , I just
Tasting Notes & Maple Syrup Barrels
Speaker 1treating the microphone equipment like it's 1995 . Not , I don't know , I don't know what you're saying . That doesn't mean , but let's sniff it . Sniff it , not the microphone . I guess you could .
Speaker 1Okay , you know what this smells like to me Apple Decadence . I should have known , because to me it smells like perfection . I bet you say that to all the boys . So what's really cool ? So they age this in those crown maple syrup barrels . First of all , they put maple syrup in barrels . I didn't know that . They just put everything in barrels . So they age this in maple . They , I didn't know that . Yeah , yeah , just put everything in barrels . Okay , yeah , so they age this in maple . They finish it in maple syrup barrels . Does it say how long they keep it in there for . It does not say how long it stays in there for , but I mean , you can smell it's sweet , like you can smell the caramelly . It's sweet .
Speaker 1I'm not getting the maple smell but , like I would imagine , you're not getting a . You don't smell syrup . I don't smell like the maple syrup . I don't go around , phil , in the grocery stores . I mean , get your nose in there . I don't go open up bottles of syrup and smell them . You will . Now I will actually , if I tell myself it's , I'm getting . There's a little bit of that sweetness that I'm smelling that could have that maple-y .
Speaker 1Yeah , alright , I'm really hoping it's very good . It's not just very good , it's very good , it's just very good . It's very good . It's decadent , it's perfection in regards to ageness . In all seriousness , is it not just profoundly deep ? Is this isn't a wine podcast , phil ? Like there is so much the taste on the tip of my tongue . There's so much body in this . Oh , all right , yes , yes , there is a slight syrupy . Is yeah to it . It's not as it doesn't attack you , it's not as up front , but it is there . It's almost like on the under side of the tongue .
Speaker 1Yeah , in a weird way of saying like if you , if you had syrup and let it sit in your mouth yes , I see what you're saying , you know , like that's kind of yeah , because maple syrup tends to have , like yes , it's very sweet , pure sugar . Sorry , I didn't think I was going to get out of that S sound Sugar I think I had . I don't know what happened there . I lost consciousness for a minute . You kind of sounded like Professor Frank . Do you know Professor Frank from the Simpsons ? Oh , I don't know , I don't know , I don't know . That was like Arnold . Well , that's a little , yeah , a little . Arnold . Arnold Fink yeah , a little bit . No , professor Frank , that's funny . No , that's funny .
Speaker 1You were saying about the decadence . I was saying that it has a little bit of a there's almost to me , there's almost a little bit of an alcohol type of flavor to some maple syrups . Yeah , you know what I'm saying Mm-hmm , and so this carries that , obviously , because , because it's actually alcohol , but it has a little bit of that . We were drinking alcohol . Oh , I can't have that , just kidding .
Speaker 1Oh , are we going to talk about other weird things that people say , yeah , okay , um , really bad . Is that one of our topics ? Apparently it is . Might be the topic today what we're talking about . We'll see . We'll see how this goes . So then I gotta tell you a story . Okay , I learned .
Speaker 1So these , I , I had never found this bottle before and I was talked into it . And so I , this turned into a celebratory bottle because somebody talked me into it , somebody talked you into a celebration , try this thing . And I was like you know what ? It's 90 ? My rule is , if it's over 60 , I got to try it first before I spend . Yeah , an additional 30 . No , no , no , if it's over 60 . So you're worried about $30 of cash , is what you're saying . No , okay , I'm worried about all of it . Oh , just any amount . What if it's 61 ? Then 60 , and if it's 90 , I have to try it before . That is a hard boundary . I am not good at boundaries . I just I say 60 just to kind of keep myself level .
Speaker 1Now , if it's a bourbon I know , or a brand I know , or something that I've , you've tried , very familiar with , or if I've tried it , I will , I'll pull the trigger . But since I hadn't had this one , well , you don't have to shoot anything . You just buy it . You don't have to shoot it . That's just , that's violent phil . No , pulling the trigger is not just you can pull the trigger on a water nozzle , you could pull the trigger on any sort of nozzle , sort of really every nozzle . Wherever a nozzle is , it probably has somewhat of a trigger . This is kind of like a trigger . Okay , yeah , all right here , good point . Yeah , thank you , funny man .
Speaker 1So so this one is sitting there like 80 or $90 and I'm like I don't know that I can do it , but I had just like gotten a new job and there was like some really good stuff happening and I was like you know what I'm gonna treat myself , I deserve this . I went back in and I bought the bottle . You bought not only that , but you bought the . You were in a real like I'm gonna treat myself mood . You were like treat yourself , treat yourself to decadence and perfection . Yes , because that's what you bought , because that's what I bought . So then I , then I I try it and I'm like , oh , this is really , this is fantastic .
Speaker 1And then I learn about the Crown Maple Syrup . Sorry , how did I Get this ? Okay , I'm getting it .
The Great Barrel Exchange Process
Speaker 1Crown Maple Syrup . They have a variant of their maple syrup that's aged in the whiskey barrels that this comes from . What ? Yes , wait a second Uh-huh that that exact one comes from . So let me get this straight . Yes , crown maple syrup makes maple syrup in a barrel . Then Widow Jane or whatever , what is it called ? Widow Jane ? Widow Jane decides we're going to take that barrel from the maple syrup , we're going to pour our whiskey in it , we're going to finish it in that , finish it , yeah . Then Crown goes well , fine . Well . Then Kron goes well , fine . Well , we're going to take our barrel back then and put more maple syrup in that , yeah . And then we're going to bottle that up and we're going to sell it as bourbon barrel aged maple syrup and also maple syrup .
Speaker 1Bourbon barrel aged maple syrup Right , but why doesn't Widow Jane go ? You can play at this game . We're going to take our barrel back from the barrel that you barreled and barreled that we barreled , and we're going to barrel it in that barrel . Yeah , well , I'm pretty sure they do . So they do , but they can't call it bourbon because it has to be new . They finish it in those . So they start by brand new barrel so they can keep finishing it . They start with a brand new barrel and then that brand new barrel is now not able to be used for anything except for other things , finishing , no . So what they do is then they take that barrel that just had the Widow Jane in it , the regular whiskey , and they say , well , let's put some maple syrup in there . So once they pull that maple syrup out and they bottle that up as bourbon barrel aged maple syrup , then they throw the whiskey into that barrel again , and that's where they age yes , and that's where this comes from is it's finished in those maple syrup barrels ?
Speaker 1Now , those maple syrup , the maple syrup , where is it ? A friend ? I , a friend , gave me a bottle , not this friend , no , a different Matt . Actually , really , hi , matt , different friend . We should probably have him on Brother . Brother , he could be my brother . He's not Just because he's named Matt . That's not usually how it works , though , because you don't name the same kid , two kids , the same name . I mean , there's Maybe my name's daryl , my brother daryl . Anyway , anyways , he gave you the syrup , he gave me the syrup , and I might have already finished the bottle . You drank the whole thing in one sitting , didn't you ? No , oh no , you bought multiple , multiple mornings I've been putting in my coffee . Oh yeah , that is good . It is so tasty . It is so tasty . I know what we're talking about .
Speaker 1This episode is just going to be called decadence , okay , and we're just going to talk about decadent things . Okay , like so then , so the other thing that we're going to try at some point we'll have to , we'll have to kind of uh huh . I was going to say reprise this role again , but I said reprise , I think in the last episode and I feel like maybe I said it earlier . I think you said refries , like refry it . Have you ever fried fries ? It's interesting . No , continue . But we're going to have to reprise this one and bring it back and do the Widow's what is it called this one ? And bring it back and do the Widows Jane , old Fashioned .
Speaker 1Oh , with maple syrup , with their maple syrup . It's the decadence , and the maple syrup a little bit of bitters . What they should do , they should take those bitters and they should put it in a maple syrup burl Burl . Is that maple syrup burl ? Maple syrup burl Is that a syrup barrel ? Maple syrup barrel Is that a barrel ? Is that a barrel that has been already like ? Is it a bourbon barrel ? No , it's the maple syrup bourbon barrel . So it's been mapled and bourboned . You know what they should do , what ? They should put cherries in there ? Ooh , age the cherries , age the cherries . Then make the bitters . What if they drop the cherries in there ? Oh , age the cherries , age the cherries . Then make the bitters . What if they drop the cherries in the maple syrup ? Maple syrup , cherries I'm down , let's go for it . And then put that into the barrel .
Speaker 1We should get pancakes after this , we should . I mean it kind of . So I'll tell you one thing . Tell me one thing that I've been into lately , if you can't tell , oh , pancakes , maple syrup , yeah , yeah . Well , the last couple old fashions we've done . I've heard maple syrup has sugar in it . Does it have sugar in it ? Yes , and I love it . Then I love it .
Speaker 1I have gotten , I've really gotten into , uh , whiskeys that are finished in other barrels yes , I know this . Um and burp , and bourbons as well . I mean bourbons , finish it . But I've kind of been into some of those different flavor profiles . So maybe that's going to be the theme of our first few episodes . Oh , the finishes , because I've got some . No , I'm saying it weird , I agree .
Speaker 1Okay , like prickly pear , what Finish in a prickly pear barrel ? Finishing the prickly pear ? No , barrel rum barrels . Right , maple honey . Do you want more ?
Speaker 1I'm just learning that they're barreling a lot of stuff . I didn't realize that everything was barreled like . Why don't you barrel water ? Do they barrel water ? They probably do . Yes , really . Oh . Yeah , I mean not to age it , but , yeah , how do you think they move it around ? Well , you can't age water . I mean I guess you can . Could could you age water ? Disgusting , that's gross . There's dirty water . Huh ,
Exploring Life's Decadent Indulgences
Speaker 1dirty , dirty water . Yeah , yeah , I like that idea . No , this is fantastic , it's really good . Yeah , I think I'm getting more of the , the mate , like I'm getting more of that syrup as I go , like what's lingering after and even that the mouth feel of it is kind of reminds me of like a thin syrup , because I've had , like , um , at these different like not a farmer's market , but uh , indianapolis state fair , they have this um pioneer village , yeah , and they make maple syrup there and they have maple .
Speaker 1Do they make the maple syrup or do they just tap no tree ? Well , they have , like , it's like all made there , so they do it . And at the market , yeah , like they bring a tree . Yes , there's like , and they tap the tree , they bring the tree , they replant the tree . They've tapped some tree tree .
Speaker 1What tree does maple syrup come from ? I'm pretty sure it's oak . I think it's a fig tree , because , you know , fig has sugar in it . Oh , my goodness , can I tell you something ? Tell me something . I'm going to tell you something else . I said one thing earlier . I'm going to tell you another thing now . I tried a whiskey the other day . Did we try this whiskey here on the show ? It's the fig with the fig . Yeah , it's the . We did field rye . We did the field rye on the show . Yes , it's right over there . Oh , yeah , I know , but , like everyone , makes my eczema breakout . Oh , really , yeah , it's so sure .
Speaker 1I'll take it off your hand . Okay , you can actually have it . I will gift it to you short . I'll take it off your hand . Okay , you can actually have it . I will gift it to you . I will take it off your hand because the other one fell off from the leprosy . Poor leprosies , just lepers . Oh , you don't call them leprosies . No , okay , I call them lepers , lepers , those are the little animals that like right , yeah , running with the spots .
Speaker 1Yeah , yep , um , what were we going to talk about ? Decadence ? Oh , self-indulgent , what is your ? Okay ? Here's , if I'm going to self-indulge on , I'm thinking just food , food . Really , are you hungry ? Yeah , I am . I think I'm hungry .
Speaker 1I had , you know , uh , the leftovers of the corn beef and all that . Oh , that sounds so good . I mean , corn beef is good , it's not . You know , the leftovers of the corned beef and all that , oh , that sounds so good . I mean , corned beef is good , it's not . You know , I wouldn't just go be like , hey , I want some corned beef Now , pastrami yes , I will be there for pastrami , isn't that corned beef ? I think so . I don't actually know .
Speaker 1I actually asked this question . I was like , what's the difference between corn people ? Who did you ask ? Madison ? I was like she didn't know . Well , if I didn't go to somebody that knows well , I thought , you know she has irish heritage , so I thought she might know . Yeah , but pastrami is the jewish heritage .
Speaker 1Yeah , uh , chat gpt would have helped you . Well , that's true , yeah , I don't really talk to anybody else other than chat gpt . Well , and your wife who doesn't know the difference ? No , no , just talk to Chachapiti .
Speaker 1But so , if I'm going to indulge , you know it's rich , it's like cheesecake , or really , to me it's key lime pie . Okay , yeah , key lime pie . And I don't know what's your like indulging . Well , okay , no , that's not indulging . Well , like decadence , so likeadence . So like to me , like creme brulee , good love it . That is a decadent dessert to me . Okay , what's your , what's your decadent dessert ?
Speaker 1We're gonna hit some themes . We're gonna talk about food , we're gonna talk about clothes , we're gonna talk about entertainment . Decadent in in all areas of life . We might as well . All right , well , yeah , all right , okay , this is good , okay , uh , where do I ?
Speaker 1What are my indulgences ? What is , um , when it comes to food , what is the most indulging or decadent thing that you enjoy ? Oh , man , uh , it's really like a toss up there because , like you know , I mean it's probably steak . Right , steak to me , I think it's like a really is steak decadent . I don't know what would you ? When I hear the word decadent , I just almost see like a fairy skipping through the clouds . Is that not what decadence is ? No , I guess decadence does have a sweet , a classiness , a sweet connotation to it , doesn't it ? Maybe I don't know , but it could be steak . We should ask your wife , who won't know . We could ask Chad GPT . I could call my wife and see if she has any idea . She'll be like what are you talking about , decadence . So I would say we're going to .
Speaker 1It's not rooted in the real definition . If we go with like a decadent dessert , then it's probably like a . It's probably in the chocolate range . I mean I would imagine that like a chocolate cake . For sure Decadent would be in that place . That place , I mean , like I'm really thinking about gorging myself , like it's probably , it's actually probably .
Speaker 1Um , there is a , there is a cake pie , ice cream combination called um , it's called the macadamia nut pie and it's ice cream what . And it's like Gibson's and it's got macadamia nuts and caramel chocolate ice cream . It is incredibly Decadent , decadent . It's very , very good . That sounds- , which is weird , because I would have said the bone-in ribeye from Gibson's would have been decadent . Sounds decadent , right ? Yeah , so when I indulge , that's where I go Like , hey , we really want to indulge , yeah , it's . Let's go to Gibson's and get a steak , a nice steak , get a couple glasses of whiskey , right , and the macadamia nut turtle pie maybe , oh , turtle , the macadamia nut turtle pie , maybe a turtle , anything , I think it's turtle pie , which has nothing to do with turtles . No , somebody squeezed a turtle and like brown goo came out or something , and they're like oh , this reminds me of that caramel I had , but like I don't . Yeah , no , I don't , I don't know . So those are , those are the things . Okay , yeah , what about decadent ?
Speaker 1If you're gonna say clothing , like if you were to dress decadently , for me that feels like comfort , comfort , like I would want like a really comfortable fit , I don't know , like you're at a spa , no , not really Because there's a spa , I'm just taking all of it off . Well , what kind of spa are you going to Remind me never to go to the spa with you ? Well , I mean , I'm not going to be wearing a bunch of clothes . I might be in a robe , a decadent robe , would you say . But I'm saying , if it's clothes , I'd like a really comfortable sweatshirt and , you know , comfy pants . I don't know . You're describing every overly exerted stay-at-home mom , okay , which we've now lost as a listener . Oh , come on , matt , like we ever had one . Oh , that's true . Yeah , that's true . Come on , my wife doesn't even listen to this . Yeah , I don't know , clothes are weird , okay , I don't know clothes . Yeah , clothes are weird . Okay , I don't know that I would decadent .
Speaker 1Clothing to me would be . I would say like it would have to still be comfortable , yeah , but
Final Thoughts & Recommendations
Speaker 1like , look really fancy . Well , that's kind of what I was saying . Yeah , I don't know , like , I'm not saying silky , flowy , okay , but I guess silk like a puffy shirt , I don't know . I'm not saying I'm not thinking like ross and his leather pants from friends , like I'm . I'm saying like and , but I'm not thinking like juan pierre either . You know , like with his flowy white shirt on his you know black stallion coming across the beach here . Yeah , it's this guy that I hate . Wasn't't he a baseball player ? I think he was , but it's not him , it's just any man in any foreign country . That was a potential threat in my days of feeling insecure . Okay , so they were called Juan Pierre , I think .
Speaker 1For me it would be being able to dress like James Bond , oh , yeah , oh yeah , see , that's it , but like a comfortable suit . But not just the suit , it's also like I think of Christina Royale . Yeah , royale , that's how you say the word . Yeah , that's what I said , you said Royale . I just said it fast . Sorry , dang it . I'm so mean sometimes when it comes to enunciation of words , I can get real nasty . Yeah , it's nasty . I apologize . That's good , that's good . Well , in Casino Royale , is it a royale with cheese ? Yeah , okay , is it a royale with cheese ? Yeah , okay , he dresses down really well , which is interesting . Like he's dressed down , but he still looks like James Bond . He's still decadent and that , to me , that might be the ultimate there .
Speaker 1What is the most decadent activity ? Hmm , wow , that's a really good question . Do you have one in mind ? Well , okay , maybe I'm thinking specifically when I hear the word decadence immediately I don't know why it just reminds me of golf . Why ? Why ?
Speaker 1Probably because you have this inflated sense of golf being , um , like an impossible sport that you have to have like an immense amount of skill and and then , typically after hole nine , you have to be able to compose yourself still and keep going upset and throw the clubs at a bird . Okay , yes , all right , yeah , and by bird I mean the caddy that will no longer be with us , right , right , I think you know , in a lot of people's minds , golf is sort of an elitist type of sport and it like but it is , it is , it can be decadent . I mean , you're sitting there , it is , but would you say it's more decadent than fencing ? I wouldn't say fencing is decadent . I would say fencing is for people that are like what about polo ? Oh , polo is decadent for sure . Yeah , that's definitely a decadent sport . See , golf is attainable .
Speaker 1Golf might not be at decadent level . It might be quite well , it might be quite delightful . It might be delightful . I think golf is delightful . Is what that is ? Yes , okay , golf is delightful . Decadent would be . I played golf with you . It was not at all delightful . You would not be able to convince me that you thought golf was delightful . No , this is golf .
Speaker 1Anybody you ask hey , did you go golfing today ? Yeah , how was it ? It was good . That's golf . Yeah , and you know it was good . Yeah , when your voice goes up like that , you're like I had a good time . No , it sucked . Why ? Because every ball I hit I don't know where it is . That's why and there are less birds now in the greater McHenry County area , because of my crappy golf season .
Speaker 1I can't wait for golf season to kick back off . Let's go . No , you're not invited . This is not Dang it . We need to get you some lessons . I wonder how much money you've spent on me , on golf , on me . Probably not a lot . Probably not a lot . All right , no , let's step it up .
Speaker 1Come on , see , like the decadence part of it , like , yes , if you're talking about country clubs and all that kind of stuff . But but that's not the golf that that I play , or that we play , or certainly not , or that I'm allowed at . You're not allowed there . No , absolutely not . I do have a country club shirt that I got at the thrift store . It just says Country Club . No , it's just for all country clubs .
Speaker 1No , it's the Crystal Lake Country Club and I'm pretty sure I'm going to go in and just try to walk in and see what happens . Oh , they're going to see your bald head and shaved face and they'll know this guy obviously couldn't even afford hair plugs , so he doesn't belong here . Look at his nevis , look at his nevis . Show even he can't even get his nevis all the way down . You gotta scrape it off , like if fred took my nevis off last week . Frederick , how is frederick anyway ?
Speaker 1Uh , decadent , decadence , that's well , you know . I don't know if I have a decadent activity , necessarily . I mean probably Jacuzzi . You know what With a champagne ? No , I don't do champagne .
Speaker 1The spa , I would say , would be decadent , though I think you're right . Yeah , I think there could be some decadence . A spa , I think indulgence is probably a little bit easier to understand than decadence . I don't really know what decadence means . Decadence who really knows what decadence means ? I mean , the word decade is in it and then it's just nce . Ooh , that's a good point . So is there some sort of timelessness to it ? It's a decadence , decadence . Yes , the Widow Jane decadence , it's decadence . Maybe we've been saying that Decadence .
