The Pillaged Pastor

Books of the Bible in 5 Minutes, by The Pillaged Pastor, is a reading, reacting and relishing of the introductions to each book of the Bible, as found in part, in The Bible Reader’s Companion, by Lawrence O. Richards. One key to understand the Bible and reaching the depths of its teaching, begins with an overview, a surveying or bird’s eye view. The book of Joel in five minutes. Natural disasters are often seen as uncontrollable events in the Old Testament. However, they were view it as acts of God to teach spiritual lessons. The book of Joel describes a devastating locust infestation that led to starvation, prayer, and fasting. This event also sparked a vision of a future day of the Lord where foreign armies would devastate Palestine. God's urgent call for his people to return to him is highlighted in Joel chapter two. Verse 12. Despite immediate challenges, Joel promises that God will pour out his spirit on all people. He'll judge nations and he will bless his land. Joel emphasizes prioritizing personal relationship with God over worldly activities and his prophecy foreshadows both future glory and the present age where God's spirit lives within those who trust in Christ. What about the date and authorship? The author whose name means Yahweh is God lived and prophesied in Judah before the temple's destruction in 5 86 BC. I. Dates suggested range from the ninth to the seventh century BC with most scholars favoring the eighth century due to the omission of Assyria or Babylon, but mentioning six significant nations. The wealth prior to the Locust Plague and Judah's former worship suggest a setting during Uzziah's prosperous reign. Joel's message remains relevant in times of prosperity, reminding God's people to commit fully rather than superficially. So where does this all take place? Joel's ministry occurs in Judah, the Southern, most of the two Hebrew kingdoms. Joel references several locations in the south indicating a strong knowledge of his region and its inhabitants. How about some key themes? Well, the first key theme is repentance, and there are two passages that illustrate true repentance. Chapter one, verse 13 through 20, and chapter two, verse 12 through 17. The second is revival. True revival occurs when there is a significant change in the attitudes and behaviors of individuals leading to renewed enthusiasm and commitment. Chapter two, verse 28 through 32. How about a theological outline of Joel? Well, we have the Locust Plague, chapter one, verse one through chapter two, verse 27. Then we have the day of the Lord, chapter two, verse 28 through chapter three, verse 21. What is my favorite verse in Joel chapter two, verse 32, and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. This is the pillage. Pastor Grace, come down for such a sinner as eye and for such a sinner as you.
