Jerry Fuller Wrote "Travelin' Man" and Discovered Talent (Glen Campbell, others) in Unlikely Places

Kate Jones Season 2 Episode 98

As a singer, Jerry Fuller had hits early in his career with "Betty, My Angel" and "Tennessee Waltz," but he made it big as a songwriter and producer. He wrote over 400 songs in eight years and discovered several talents, including Glen Campbell, the Knickerbockers, and Gary Puckett & The Union Gap. He produced the top 10 hits "Young Girl," "Lady Willpower" and "Over You'" and wrote two number one songs: "Show and Tell" by Al Wilson and "Travelin' Man" by Ricky Nelson.

The image in this episode's chapters and thumbnail is of Fuller's "Teenage Love" album. Also in the chapters, you'll find an image of "Four Decades: A Songwriter Sings His Hits." Both of these CDs are on Amazon.

You can listen to him singing "Betty, My Angel" in this video, which also features several vintage photos from the '50s.

Sheldon:
00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:02.720
Jerry Fuller started singing with his brother when

00:00:02.720 --> 00:00:03.540
they were children,

00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:06.320
but it was his songwriting and producing that

00:00:06.320 --> 00:00:07.220
made him famous.

00:00:07.760 --> 00:00:10.100
Fuller died from lung cancer complications

00:00:10.480 --> 00:00:13.040
July 18 at his home in Sherman Oaks,

00:00:13.040 --> 00:00:13.540
California.

00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:15.540
He was 85.

00:00:15.945 --> 00:00:17.785
The Song of the Day is paying tribute

00:00:17.785 --> 00:00:20.045
to the singers, songwriters and musicians

00:00:20.505 --> 00:00:22.605
who died in 2024.

00:00:23.785 --> 00:00:26.285
His demo singing led to getting a recording

00:00:26.425 --> 00:00:26.925
contract.

00:00:27.305 --> 00:00:29.625
He had a couple of small hits early

00:00:29.625 --> 00:00:30.525
in his career.

00:00:31.080 --> 00:00:33.960
"Betty, My Angel" reached number 94

00:00:33.960 --> 00:00:37.320
and "Tennessee Waltz," 63 on the Billboard Hot

00:00:37.320 --> 00:00:38.060
100.

00:00:38.760 --> 00:00:41.660
Fuller started selling and producing his own songs.

00:00:42.200 --> 00:00:44.840
He wrote more than 400 songs in eight

00:00:44.840 --> 00:00:46.815
years at Four Star Music.

00:00:48.095 --> 00:00:49.315
Fuller knew talent.

00:00:49.775 --> 00:00:52.675
He made more discoveries than a Spanish explorer.

00:00:53.375 --> 00:00:56.035
He heard Glen Campbell singing in an Albuquerque,

00:00:56.175 --> 00:00:58.655
New Mexico, nightclub and convinced him to move

00:00:58.655 --> 00:00:59.715
to Los Angeles.

00:01:00.370 --> 00:01:02.230
He discovered the group the Knickerbockers

00:01:02.690 --> 00:01:05.030
and produced their top 20 hit "Lies."

00:01:05.730 --> 00:01:08.130
He found Gary Puckett & The Union Gap

00:01:08.130 --> 00:01:10.710
in a San Diego bowling alley lounge.

00:01:11.250 --> 00:01:13.910
He wrote and produced "Young Girl," "Lady Willpower"

00:01:14.215 --> 00:01:16.855
and "Over You," all top 10 hits in

00:01:16.855 --> 00:01:18.235
1968.

00:01:18.855 --> 00:01:21.675
He wrote two number one songs, Al Wilson's

00:01:21.815 --> 00:01:24.235
"Show and Tell" and Ricky Nelson's

00:01:24.615 --> 00:01:25.675
"Travelin' Man."

00:01:26.230 --> 00:01:28.710
He wrote "Travelin' Man" in his car while

00:01:28.710 --> 00:01:30.950
waiting to pick up his wife. The song

00:01:30.950 --> 00:01:32.630
is about a man who has a girl

00:01:32.630 --> 00:01:33.690
in every port.

00:01:34.150 --> 00:01:36.710
Fuller used an atlas to pick the countries

00:01:36.710 --> 00:01:37.610
in the song.

00:01:38.965 --> 00:01:41.045
Fuller wrote the song with Sam Cooke in

00:01:41.045 --> 00:01:44.325
mind, but Cooke's manager heard it and didn't

00:01:44.325 --> 00:01:47.205
like it. Nelson's bass player in the next

00:01:47.205 --> 00:01:49.525
office over heard it, and he did like

00:01:49.525 --> 00:01:52.665
it. He asked Cooke's manager about the song.

00:01:53.100 --> 00:01:54.940
Cooke pulled it out of the trash and

00:01:54.940 --> 00:01:55.840
gave it to

00:01:56.220 --> 00:01:58.940
him. The song was Nelson's second and last

00:01:58.940 --> 00:02:01.900
number one hit, though he recorded 18 more

00:02:01.900 --> 00:02:03.120
songs of Fuller's.

Kate:
00:02:04.633 --> 00:02:07.693
That was Song of the Day creator Sheldon

00:02:07.833 --> 00:02:11.113
Zoldan. And I'm Kate Jones, host of Everyday

00:02:11.113 --> 00:02:11.613
Creation.
