Speaker 1:I would like to let you know that this episode contains discussions about sexual trauma, abuse and other potentially triggering topics. The content may be distressing for some listeners. I encourage you to prioritize your emotional well-being while listening If you or someone you know is affected by any of the issues discussed being while listening, If you or someone you know is affected by any of the issues discussed, please consider reaching out to a trusted professional or support resource. Listener discretion is advised. There's a woman in France and I would like you to know her name, and she would like you to know her name as well.
Speaker 1:Giselle Pellicot has become a symbol in France for her courageous fight against sexual violence. In a case that has shocked the country, her ex-husband of 50 years, Dominique Pellico, allegedly drugged her over a decade and arranged for multiple men to rape her while she was unconscious. The abuse came to light after Dominique was arrested for unrelated voyeuristic crimes. What he was doing was he was filming up women's skirts in a supermarket. The police decided this was a bit of a red flag, and so, upon further investigation, they uncovered extensive footage documenting the rapes, all without Giselle's knowledge. I had an opportunity to speak with Dr Sarah Rutherford, consultant with an academic background in gender and organizational culture. She's also the author of the book Women's Work, Men's Cultures, and here's what she had to say about how Dominique recruited these men.
Speaker 2:He invited through a website called in French, or I'll say it in English, without Her Knowing.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:So this was a website about drugged women being sexually abused and raped. So the men had to go on that website in order to find out about this, and that's how he recruited them is 72 years of age now, had thought she shared a normal and loving marriage with Dominique.
Speaker 1:They had children together, but she was unaware of the abuse that she was enduring or that she had endured. Yet she was suffering with hair loss and memory lapses and anxiety. She actually thought that she was losing her mind or that she was getting Alzheimer's disease. You see, her ex-husband, dominique Pellicot, used powerful drugs to sedate her and orchestrated these assaults. This case has resonated widely in France, sparking protests in support of Giselle and other victims of sexual violence. Her bravery in speaking out has offered solidarity to countless others who have suffered in silence, helping to raise awareness about the importance of consent and the devastating effects of such crimes. And you know what types of men would you imagine would be coming to see her to do this, knowing that she had been drugged by her husband? So you probably think it's monsters. Well, it's monsters amongst us. And this is the type of men, according to Dr Sarah Rutherford, that came to see her to rape her. Only three men declined and none of them went to the police. Here's what Dr Sarah Rutherford had to say about that.
Speaker 2:They look normal Electricians, there was a teacher, there was a nurse, there was a bank manager, there was a council worker. I mean, you know, these were married men, they were fathers, they didn't have criminal records.
Speaker 1:This was what has shocked France and should be shocking us and the one thing that is just incredible that Giselle Pellico has done that is going to help survivors of sexual trauma, survivors of sexual abuse, survivors of rape is that she has waived her legal right to anonymity, is that she has waived her legal right to anonymity. Anonymity protects not only the survivor of sexual abuse, assault and rape, it also protects the perpetrators. Her public advocacy has drawn attention to how pervasive and insidious sexual abuse can be. I mean, this is just a horrific, shocking story, and even it happens within seemingly stable relationships. In other words, you never know. Giselle's story is both heartbreaking and empowering, as she stands as a voice for those who have endured similar trauma, and I talked a little bit further with Dr Sarah Rutherford about her waiving her legal right to anonymity. And here's what Dr Sarah Rutherford about her waiving her legal right to anonymity. And here's what Dr Rutherford had to say.
Speaker 2:Oh, I think this was absolutely massive because she waived her right to anonymity. What she was doing was identifying the men, and particularly her husband and the area you know, and suddenly, basically, the anonymity protects everybody, even though it's meant to protect the victim, right.
Speaker 1:Anyway, this is a shocking and devastating situation and we've seen lots of pictures of Giselle Pellico because she wanted you to know her name and her face. She wanted to destigmatize this and eliminate the shame that is often surrounded by sexual abuse and rape and sexual trauma. Many women blame themselves when there is male violence against women. They think maybe my skirt was too short, maybe I was wearing the wrong thing, maybe I had too many drinks. It is never your fault. It is never the fault of a woman who has been abused or sexually assaulted by a man. And male violence against women is real and we're changing the narrative around this and Giselle Pellico, at her age of 71, is changing this as well 71, 72. The men there was upwards of 100 men that were invited and 50 of them are standing trial and we are going to know their names. Once this is all said and done, because of that incredibly courageous decision that she has made to forego her legal right to anonymity, I think we all need to honor, respect and bow to Giselle Pelico. Remember her name. She wants you to know it. That was Dr Sarah Rutherford. She's a consultant with an academic background in gender and organizational culture. Her book Women's Work Men's Cultures sets her approach to change. She helps organizations identify barriers to women's progress and suggests ways in which they can change their culture. She designs audits, runs workshops and coaches senior management and has specific expertise in sexual harassment in the workplace. Her email sarah at rutherfordassociatescouk.
