83. SHAMEEZ PATEL: Celebrating nerdy love with board games and San Diego Comic Con
San Diego Comic Con week is here! If you can't attend the show in person, the next best thing is to read about it. Shameez Patel's first novel published in the USA will do just the trick. Playing Flirty has some ties to SDCC (that I'll let you explore for yourself!) and lots of nerdy love formed over a board game. We're talking all things fandom this week on LiteraryHype Podcast!

00;00;03;03 - 00;00;28;13
Speaker 1
Hi and welcome to the Literary Hype podcast. I am Stephanie, your literary hype woman. And today I get to introduce you to an author who's making her first splash into the US publishing market. And her name is Cherise Patel. This is her first book here in the US called Plain Flirty, and she is from South Africa. So we took a little math on our part to figure out a great time for both of us to do this.
00;00;28;13 - 00;00;58;05
Speaker 1
We are several hours apart, but we made it work and it is a super fun, super nerdy conversation. In case you couldn't tell from all the nerdy things on this book that it is very nerd friendly. So without any further ado, here's my conversation with Cherise Patel welcome to Literary Hope. It's so exciting to have you on to talk about your brand new book Playing Flirty, which is the nerdiest book, and I love it.
00;00;58;05 - 00;01;00;23
Speaker 2
Thank you so much. I'm really excited to be here.
00;01;00;25 - 00;01;15;00
Speaker 1
And we get to have this conversation, we assume because you live in South Africa, so before we get into the actual content of the book, because this book is set in the US, what was it like for you writing a book set in a whole nother country than what you live in?
00;01;15;11 - 00;01;51;04
Speaker 2
It was slightly challenging, but not quite as hard as you would think because the rest of the world consumes media. 99% based in the US I think it would be much harder if I was basically us trying to write a book based in South Africa because I don't, I mean I don't think there was any movies, popular ones made here so while I'm really far away, a lot of the American culture, while I know it's different for each state, but a lot of it is familiar to me just by everything that I consume and of course I did consult a few people, so I'm, I'm happy with where it's based, but I, I really would
00;01;51;04 - 00;01;54;05
Speaker 2
love to come there and spend some time there.
00;01;54;21 - 00;02;05;26
Speaker 1
So one part of this story that kind of happens in the past happens at San Diego Comic-Con. Talk about your research into the vibe of San Diego because that is a place that is very near and dear to my heart.
00;02;06;05 - 00;02;27;20
Speaker 2
I have never been, but I have been obsessed with it since since I heard it existed, which was probably when I was 11 years old or tall. I've got no recollection of where this obsession started. It was before Comic-Con was even an idea in South Africa. I was I was always a fangirl. It's it's Ken's always a geek.
00;02;27;20 - 00;02;57;27
Speaker 2
And just the concept of having so many fandoms in one place, especially a lot of geeks grow up. And I think I can speak on behalf of most of us when I say a lot of us grew up feeling slightly isolated and how passionate we are about these things. And to imagine an entire building full of people that are there for the same reason with the same amounts of passion I my mind was blown and I've just forever researched and wanted to go.
00;02;58;11 - 00;03;00;10
Speaker 2
So yes, that is still the dream.
00;03;00;28 - 00;03;06;22
Speaker 1
I hope you get to make it there one day because it is epic. It's just 500,000 people. It's fine.
00;03;07;15 - 00;03;10;17
Speaker 2
It's no big deal. And it's not like it's hard to get a ticket or anything.
00;03;10;25 - 00;03;18;05
Speaker 1
No, no, it's so it's just like I think it's a step that like 6% of people who drive for tickets get them. It's insane.
00;03;18;05 - 00;03;31;18
Speaker 2
Yeah, it is. And especially me, somebody outside of the state, outside of the country, I, I don't know. It'll be literally all my cards would have to fall into place for that to happen, but I have not given up just yet.
00;03;32;26 - 00;03;41;11
Speaker 1
Tickets go on sale in November if that's when it starts, which is wild that it sells out in like 2 hours in November for a July event.
00;03;41;24 - 00;03;49;05
Speaker 2
Incredible in it. I think it goes to show how powerful the nerds I think we are. We are underrated as a community.
00;03;49;17 - 00;03;55;25
Speaker 1
So if they're both playing flirty this is definitely one for the nerd girls. Talk a little bit about what the story is about.
00;03;56;09 - 00;04;24;09
Speaker 2
The story follows Rose Me, a board game enthusiast. She believes she's got an entire life planned out in her trusty spreadsheets and soon realizes that things aren't feeling that good. Not at work, not in her long term relationship. And she's not meeting those goals that she thought she would at this point. And then there's a board game competition where if you submit your original board game, you have the chance to get it produced and there's no one better in the whole world that can help her than her best.
00;04;24;09 - 00;04;35;08
Speaker 2
Friend's older brother and gaming nemesis, William Game happens to be a video game designer, so he knows how games work and the two of them start a game of betting both on and off the board.
00;04;35;23 - 00;04;41;08
Speaker 1
Dun dun dun. What was your initial spark for this story?
00;04;41;19 - 00;05;08;02
Speaker 2
Honestly, it's it's it's such a joyful story for me, reading it, reading it over. But it was written during a really sad time it was written during lockdown during COVID when they there were no game nights. I was not seeing any friends. There was very little joy at that time, at least when I was and I think I just live vicariously through this novel where things were OK and we're friends.
00;05;08;02 - 00;05;23;09
Speaker 2
Got to have the cricket. You get to have your own family and you get to be with them. And aside from that, I've always wanted more geek representation. I think all we have is the Big Bang Theory. Which it's not great.
00;05;23;23 - 00;05;27;09
Speaker 1
It's not exactly the most inclusive, but that way.
00;05;28;06 - 00;05;39;14
Speaker 2
No, no. I mean, I genuinely enjoyed quite a few seasons of it. I just, I just wanted to write my version. I wanted to write a brown girl being a geek and just having fun. And so I did.
00;05;39;22 - 00;05;45;00
Speaker 1
So much of this story centers around board games and game night. What is your favorite board game?
00;05;45;12 - 00;06;05;01
Speaker 2
Right. It depends on my mood. I think in South Africa, we've got a game called 30 Seconds. I don't know if it's ever become popular in the US. I included it in the book because I had to. It's a really, really fun group game. It gets everyone riled up and we always joke among all South Africans among each other that this is the game that ruins relationships.
00;06;05;10 - 00;06;33;26
Speaker 2
Like be very careful who you play this game with. So as a party, trick, it's a good one to bring out. It gets everyone involved, gets everyone hyped up. In terms of the games that are slightly more niche, I love discovering new games. I was recently at a board game events where a lot of board gamers brought the original games to play, and I had so much fun with games that have not even been released into the world yet, and I'm so excited for them to eventually get produced.
00;06;34;04 - 00;06;44;04
Speaker 1
So in this, she creates a game, but we don't really get to know much about it. So if you were to create a board game in real life, what elements would you want it to include?
00;06;44;14 - 00;07;08;08
Speaker 2
I would definitely create Overpower. It needs a lot of work over power. For those of you don't know is Rose's board game, it does need a lot of development style, but as part of the board game event that I went to, the next one is a workshop on how to create your own board game. So I think the more of those I attend, the it is that I would actually get to creating this game.
00;07;08;08 - 00;07;09;17
Speaker 2
So let's see oh.
00;07;09;21 - 00;07;18;17
Speaker 1
Something to keep an eye out for this cover does have a lot of nods to nerd on it. Is there any particular little detail that you love the most.
00;07;19;03 - 00;07;25;27
Speaker 2
It is the banana graham on the mat and the fact that the tiny little tiles spell out grow.
00;07;26;05 - 00;07;36;03
Speaker 1
So much of this book involves nerdiness and all kinds of different fandom. She's a big Lord of the Rings fan. She's got all these games that she loves, these video games. What are your favorite fandoms?
00;07;36;11 - 00;07;51;15
Speaker 2
Sword Rings? Big surprise I don't know the race. I adore The Hunger Games as a very, very special place in my heart. I'm a Marvel girl. I'm a Twilight girly. I'm a very basic girly. It turns out.
00;07;51;25 - 00;07;58;11
Speaker 1
No judgment from a Marvel Twilight girly like those are those are the best.
00;07;59;09 - 00;08;02;10
Speaker 2
Exactly. It's culture. I'm a woman of culture and taste.
00;08;02;21 - 00;08;11;06
Speaker 1
They're so iconic for our generation. What about Marvel? And Twilight do you love the most with Marvel?
00;08;11;06 - 00;08;38;25
Speaker 2
Very easily, without hesitation. I can tell you I fell in love with Loki. Those of you who aren't watching a video or maybe just listening to that, he is on my wall. I think I've always had a thing for the morally gray, dark haired love interest but look, he's definitely one of the tops. And there's plenty other things I like about Marvel, but he's certainly climbed the ranks in terms of what I associated with and Twilight.
00;08;38;27 - 00;08;54;13
Speaker 2
I cannot tell you I was a 14 year old hormone driven teenage girl. Who also wanted a vampire to fall in love with it. And I think I think that was very real with me.
00;08;54;21 - 00;09;03;06
Speaker 1
Oh, for sure. I just did a photo op with Peter Fetch, Nelly, Ashley Green and Jackson Rathbone and Peter Shelley.
00;09;03;08 - 00;09;04;09
Speaker 2
So amazing.
00;09;04;20 - 00;09;07;12
Speaker 1
And therefore I am now complete as a human.
00;09;08;09 - 00;09;12;17
Speaker 2
How were you? Yeah, like, how are you existing off the boat?
00;09;12;17 - 00;09;14;02
Speaker 1
No, it was it was a really.
00;09;14;02 - 00;09;16;28
Speaker 2
Nice voice speaking Silk Ghost.
00;09;17;13 - 00;09;31;25
Speaker 1
Yes, very much so. But but look, he's also a good one. The first costume that I the first cosplay I did was Sylvie from Loki's TV show Hazing. What are your favorite things to cosplay?
00;09;31;27 - 00;10;01;26
Speaker 2
I have cosplay Loki twice. I've played as a hobbits. My favorite my favorite cosplay thus far has been one that I might actually repeat this year. And it is a Jawa from Star Wars because I am quite short. So it makes and I had so much fun with the entire costume sitting up, like setting up the little light bulb eyes so that they can glow.
00;10;02;23 - 00;10;14;02
Speaker 2
I just I felt very clever about it. I'm not a professional cosplay any means. I cannot, so I just it's me and glue gun and a mission, you know, determination and heart.
00;10;14;07 - 00;10;30;04
Speaker 1
Being short is something you have in common with your main character. Rose in this book, she is a very small, small girl. But this man, William is a very big man. Let's talk a little bit about crafting their dynamic way.
00;10;30;07 - 00;11;01;16
Speaker 2
You know, they say write what you know and the very first well, not the very first novel, but most recently playing fantasy was was the first book they put me put me back to writing. And it was just so easy to put in a short girl because it worked so perfectly with the Hobbit theme that carries throughout. And I just I wanted them to almost be opposites in as many ways as they could be, including their heights, including their approach to life.
00;11;02;23 - 00;11;15;15
Speaker 2
With Rose being very high strung, very she plans everything. She doesn't like surprises. And then there's William who is laid back, and he takes life as it comes. And I wanted the two of them to balance each other.
00;11;15;23 - 00;11;39;02
Speaker 1
And you do walk a fine balance throughout this book because when we first meet Rose, she is in a relationship with another man, and that laughs for a good chunk of the book. So how did you approach crafting this other really this relationship that's the overarching relationship while she's still with another man without making her look bad?
00;11;39;10 - 00;12;10;03
Speaker 2
That was probably the hardest part of writing this book because I didn't want to write the cheating trope at all. I wanted to make sure that Rose was not cheating not even emotionally in a way. And while there was maybe the tiniest of of overlap in her feelings growing or just realizing that there was a spark between her and William, that was the exact second that she realized it needed to end with Patrick and I.
00;12;10;25 - 00;12;34;20
Speaker 2
I wanted to reflect how that can happen in real life, in a fading relationship, and how that interest can spark up elsewhere and also show that the respectful thing to do for your partner whether they are wrong or not. In this case, anyone who has or will be reading it, Patrick messes up. He he messes up and I still didn't think it justified cheating.
00;12;36;14 - 00;12;41;26
Speaker 2
So I wanted to write it the way I felt it should be dealt with. But that's my opinion.
00;12;42;09 - 00;12;52;17
Speaker 1
And on the flip side with William, there's also a sticky situation that he is the best friend's brother, which is a beloved trope. What is it about that trope that you love that made you want to include it?
00;12;52;24 - 00;13;37;11
Speaker 2
It was less about the conflict that would come between the best friends because of her relationship with his brother and more wanting to write a brotherly relationship. I absolutely adore exploring relationships of all kinds in my novels and that includes the relationships between siblings, parental and and their children, and obviously romantic relationships. And in this case, it gave me a chance to really highlights these half brothers who find themselves being close now after years of being kept apart and adding rose into the situation was really just something that would shine a light on all those cracks.
00;13;37;21 - 00;14;02;17
Speaker 1
Rose also finds herself in a sticky situation at work. So you talked about how she's not exactly happy at work. And part of it is this and this discomfort with a certain male employee a coworker of hers. And I feel like it's a situation a lot of women find themselves in where they're not doing anything or doing anything other than implications and making you feel uncomfortable.
00;14;03;06 - 00;14;07;17
Speaker 1
So touch on why you felt you needed to include that into your story.
00;14;07;24 - 00;14;25;17
Speaker 2
It's exactly that. It's what you're saying. I feel like it happens so often and women are constantly being led into thinking that we've either created it all in our heads and it's not actually that bad. Or even if that is what it is and it really is that bad, he's not hurting. You don't make a big deal out of nothing.
00;14;25;17 - 00;14;51;24
Speaker 2
Don't become the hysterical woman dumping of emotional, you know, we've all been we've all heard about some other women being called these things, and it can escalate sometimes. It might not. And even if it doesn't, it shouldn't have been done in the first place. But overlooking it can lead to escalation. And it's you think that that that person, when speaking up about it, needs to be heard and oftentimes doesn't.
00;14;51;24 - 00;15;09;12
Speaker 2
And writing this also gave me a chance to just show how everyone in a life Ellsworth with hearing us speak about this some were very supportive. Others told her, you know, it's not a big deal. So I was I think it was important to explore and I hope readers feel the same way.
00;15;09;16 - 00;15;31;22
Speaker 1
Well I at least would agree that is important. It's such a touchy subject, but it's something that's so relatable and it keeps us kind of grounded in reality of these are situations that a lot of us face. Unfortunately, you when you're promoting this book, you would do these little comparisons on Instagram where you would take another book and be like, if you like, to this.
00;15;31;22 - 00;15;37;05
Speaker 1
These are things that you would like in my book. So talk a little bit about crafting those posts because they were super fun.
00;15;37;14 - 00;15;47;27
Speaker 2
And I'm so glad you liked them. I'm sure. I mean, oftentimes I feel like I'm just posting into the void and just, you know, straightening spaghetti at the wall and seeing if anything sticks or if I'm just making a mess that's.
00;15;47;28 - 00;15;48;08
Speaker 1
All it.
00;15;48;11 - 00;15;48;16
Speaker 2
Looks.
00;15;50;20 - 00;16;12;12
Speaker 2
Exactly. Well, social media in general, that was because I was reading so many romance novels, which I really love reading, and I wanted to keep posting about it. I know a lot of authors tend to only promote their own books because it is a product. It is a brand and you are trying to sell something. But I didn't want to stop posting about the books that I love.
00;16;12;12 - 00;16;31;13
Speaker 2
I mean, that is how I, I got into her. Let's call it books diagram. I, I was posting my books that I was reading before I was posting about the books that I was writing before I was even writing the books and I didn't want to stop that not just because I enjoy reading and talking about these books, but also because I want to support other authors.
00;16;31;13 - 00;16;54;07
Speaker 2
And maybe my audience would pick up, you know, whether it's you between the lines or on romance or celebrity crush because they've seen my posts and maybe their audience would pick up my book if they see that post. So it's a mutual beneficial for everybody. And it was a lot of fun to do. Every time I'm reading one of these novels and something comes up and I'm like, Ooh, it's actually something I mentioned in my book as well.
00;16;54;20 - 00;16;56;19
Speaker 2
Make a little note of it. It's going to go on the post.
00;16;56;28 - 00;17;09;04
Speaker 1
Throughout this book. Instead of referring to them as chapters, you refer to them as rounds, which I thought was a very lovely little nerdy nod at what point did you guys come up with that idea and how did that come about?
00;17;09;16 - 00;17;35;10
Speaker 2
That was that was me sliding it in. And I think the final drafts I just had this sudden, sudden urge and I was like, Oh, I absolutely have to do this. And I just wrote it in and my editor didn't stop me sounds like they must be OK with it. And only afterwards I heard that she was like a little bit lukewarm about it, but decided to put it through because she figured it was something I wanted.
00;17;35;19 - 00;17;39;25
Speaker 1
Well, I enjoyed it. It seemed very nerdy and appropriate for the story.
00;17;39;25 - 00;17;41;06
Speaker 2
It's good enough for me.
00;17;41;17 - 00;17;59;00
Speaker 1
It took me a second to really process all of it and was like, Oh, wait, that's that's real smart. But this is not your first book. You've also done some fantasy books, so how did the process change for you in writing a romcom versus a fantasy novel?
00;17;59;18 - 00;18;29;02
Speaker 2
It was actually the other way around. So I wrote Tranquility before I wrote the fantasy trilogy. But thankfully, he just took its own time finding a home and being edited on my end. I editors and editors and they were just the things that I wanted to fix. I wanted to be very sure about Rose not cheating. I actually had to cut out a lot of Patrick from the book, so the first draft had quite a lot more of him.
00;18;29;02 - 00;18;50;23
Speaker 2
So it was it was a it was a longer process, as I say, to get it to to where it is now and find the story I really wanted to tell. The fantasy happened whenever I needed a break from the romance, and it was so consuming that it just it ended up sort of taking more and more time.
00;18;50;23 - 00;19;15;04
Speaker 2
It started out with just sort of 90% lankford's and 10% fantasy and that, that 10% just kept growing until I was completely immersed in the Selene realm. And realized that if I leave, I am going to forget the entire magic wall that I created, and I would have to reread my own books and make notes. And I was not prepared to do that.
00;19;15;04 - 00;19;23;00
Speaker 2
So I just decided to to get them all out and then move back to romance and get paid for the thing.
00;19;23;13 - 00;19;36;07
Speaker 1
You mean a fantasy book became your actual escape so many people use fantasy books as an escape from reality, and you were escaping a reality based book with fantasy.
00;19;36;07 - 00;19;42;15
Speaker 2
But exactly. Do you know what the thing is? Rose would approve. So that's what counts Rosewood.
00;19;42;15 - 00;19;47;26
Speaker 1
100%. Be supportive of this and be like, I would like these books. Please give me more. Please.
00;19;48;03 - 00;19;49;03
Speaker 2
You absolutely would.
00;19;49;20 - 00;19;57;15
Speaker 1
So including flirty, it is more of a closed door romance. So talk a little bit about why you decided to do it as closed door instead of Open Door.
00;19;57;27 - 00;20;29;04
Speaker 2
Was open door. It was very, very open. Wide open, actually. There wasn't a door and the first draft and like I said, that book went through a lot of revisions as I was trying to find out what was not only the story I wanted to tell, but also the level of spice that I was comfortable with. My romance series has a lot more spice, and it felt right for that couple because of what they were going through and what they were trying to communicate to each other in those stolen moments.
00;20;29;12 - 00;20;54;25
Speaker 2
It really needed to to be passionate and explicitly so. With Rose and William, it while the banter was very very steamy and very flirty, I knew that when I finally got to it and finally started reading on a deeper level what I'd written that that moment meant so much to them that they'd almost want to keep it to themselves.
00;20;55;02 - 00;21;07;02
Speaker 1
I mean, that makes sense because they were keeping everything else to themselves throughout this process of falling for each other. So it makes sense. They would close the door on the reader as well.
00;21;07;09 - 00;21;09;07
Speaker 2
So I was worried my mom would read it. But yeah.
00;21;09;10 - 00;21;11;03
Speaker 1
Also that I saw.
00;21;11;04 - 00;21;11;22
Speaker 2
Tonight.
00;21;12;07 - 00;21;17;13
Speaker 1
Were you like broke down different spice levels? What's your favorite level to read versus write?
00;21;17;18 - 00;21;45;16
Speaker 2
I read widely. I will say that I will read something that's pretty filthy, but I've got certain triggers that I would prefer not to read. So if I'm going to go in the much spicy stuff, I just have to be a little bit careful. But I don't mind a really spicy scene. What I what I will admit is that for me personally, too much spice, I get a little bit bored and not in any way offended or scandalized.

I just I realize I start skimming a bit. I'm like, Okay, cool. His body when they touch that and I know how these things work and I'm like, What happened next? I need to know in terms of the story. So I end up writing more story based just because I get bored reading too much spice. But I can't.
00;22;05;21 - 00;22;10;29
Speaker 2
I can't I have a preference in reading. It really is quite wide. It depends on the story and what feels right.
00;22;11;04 - 00;22;25;02
Speaker 1
I definitely agree that I'm I need plots to go with it, but that's such a big conversation in Book World right now of like people on both sides of the line being like, Well, ours are better than yours. And that's not really.
00;22;25;02 - 00;22;59;24
Speaker 2
Just I don't know why we're letting ourselves be divided. We as romance readers need to stick together against everybody that shames us. For us, we do not need any divide if you enjoy, you know, kinky, taboo stuff, provided it's not harmful, that is your business. And if someone else enjoys closed door, that is their business. As long as you're not judging each other or, you know, yacking on on someone else's team, as they say they can all just celebrate at the end of the day that everyone is happy because that's kind of the point of romance.
00;22;59;27 - 00;23;03;24
Speaker 1
Hey, man, there's so much drama. We don't need to create it ourselves.
00;23;04;00 - 00;23;05;28
Speaker 2
Now, my teammates in this.
00;23;06;08 - 00;23;13;13
Speaker 1
Another thing with the cover that I saw on your Instagram is that you had a blanket made of your book cover. What made you want to do that?
00;23;14;09 - 00;23;35;25
Speaker 2
I didn't have it made. It was gifted to me at my book launch, and it was so incredible and it was so my book launch. We decided to do a geeky quiz because it just felt right for this book. And the quiz was sort of ongoing and there was a lot of things happening. And one of my friends came up to me and she was like, This bag is full of stuff from us.
00;23;36;00 - 00;24;06;16
Speaker 2
And it was a group of them it was a group of them that had come together to give me this like launch day gift, which was amazing. And it had this enormous fleecy blanket that the video didn't do it justice. It's incredible blanket. It's also the middle of summer, so I couldn't even properly use it yet. And then they gave me Tumblr also a thing, flirty sort of images and things on it, and got a Gandel coat.
00;24;06;27 - 00;24;09;20
Speaker 2
So I am a very happy girl, love.
00;24;09;20 - 00;24;20;16
Speaker 1
Its nerdy gifts are the best. I know people who have turned their book covers into like coats and hoodies and stuff, so it's always fun to see little cozy vibes with their book covers.
00;24;21;07 - 00;24;23;26
Speaker 2
It doesn't get easier than the blankets. I mean, it's.
00;24;24;09 - 00;24;26;22
Speaker 1
So what's next for you in the publishing world?
00;24;26;27 - 00;24;52;28
Speaker 2
I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to share, but I'm going to share it anyway. I think it happens to be for the second book in the Pamphlet Universe and it will tentatively be published in Summer the US Summer 20, 26. Provided I can meet this deadline and we'll get snow. I'll get to know another member of the game nights a little bit better.
00;24;53;04 - 00;24;57;27
Speaker 1
So the last question we always ask because this is literary hype, what books are you hyped about.
00;24;58;04 - 00;25;15;23
Speaker 2
Becoming hyped about? Oh gosh, I really, really want to read, read Sunrise on the Reaping. Since it's dropped, I haven't been able to see because I am on a very, very tight deadline. But that is probably my, my biggest like anticipated upcoming well, not upcoming anymore. It's been published but book on my list.
00;25;16;04 - 00;25;20;00

I'm so happy to be in. Your questions have been so thoughtful and wonderful. I've obviously done quite a few podcasts and interviews and sometimes it does feel like I'm regurgitating the same answers. But I will say that your questions have made me think a little much Thank you.
00;25;40;16 - 00;26;00;07
Speaker 1

If you'd like to get your hands on this book, which you definitely should especially if you are a nerdy girl, this is going to tickle a special place in your heart. And the links to get a hold of this are down in the description for you as well as where to find me on social media.
