You guys, welcome back. I am so happy you're here with me. Today, we're going to talk about the most important decision you make in your day for your health. And here's the clincher. We only get one opportunity to do it every day, which makes this so critical for your health.
In the first episode, we talked about why bringing our body into balance and keeping it in balance is so vital for optimal health.
In that episode, you'll remember that we talked about how our gut is the epicenter of the health of our mind and body.
It is literally called the second brain in the body because it makes over 90% of the body's chemical messengers our hormones that regulate our metabolism, our growth and development, which impacts our bone and muscle health, our sex hormones, reproduction and fertility, our mood and mental health, including our stress response. It regulates our sleep and our sleep cycles, our blood pressure and heart function, and our appetite and body weight. Approximately 70 to 80 % of our immune system is housed in the gut, which protects our body against those harmful pathogens and keeps us healthy and well.
I love to think of the gut like a beautiful little Switzerland town. With cobblestone streets where you're walking down and you see all the shops and townspeople, it's just bustling. Everyone has a place and a purpose and is just getting it done.
As you walk through the town, you see the mountains and the fields in the background, the cows and the oxen pulling the plows through the earth. The air smells so clean and fresh. It is just beautiful. This is what we want our gut microbiome to be. Your gut microbiome is literally a little town that runs your entire body.
A balanced gut microbiome is absolutely vital for overall well-being. So when and how does this thriving little town get woken up? When does everything get set into motion so that it's functioning at its peak? Because this is the key to optimal health.
It's how you BREAK your morning FAST. Breakfast literally means to BREAK your FAST after your nightly rest. This is what sends the signals and activates your gut and the body to either set you on the right path or put you on an uphill battle. So the question is, how are you doing that? What are you breaking your fast with? Because this is vital. It's what activates that town, your entire gut.
To tell you what our body is like in the morning, we actually need to jump back to the night before. It takes about eight hours for your body to digest the last meal of the day. After this eight hours, your organs start to go through a detox and cleansing period. Your liver, kidneys, lungs, this takes about four hours. It's after this 12 hour period that your body is actually ready for the uptake of nutrition.
I want you to think about your body and your gut microbiome like being a sponge. What absorbs more, a wet sponge or a dry one? Right, a dry sponge.
What you take in your body first is going to have hyperabsorption and is what is going to either properly or improperly activate all those chemical messengers we just talked about. You're either going to activate your good, healthy bacteria or your bad bacteria.
And this sets your day for either success and ease, where everything in your body is properly set in motion, or where you feel like you're constantly fighting against your own body with cravings, mood fluctuations, inflammation, low energy, hard time focusing, you're not sleeping well at night. I want you to go back to that Switzerland town with the beautiful mountains and peaks.
Do you want to be walking alongside the mountain on a beautiful straight path, just taking it all in, or trying to climb straight up that mountain? Because how you start your day is the path you choose. So the question is, how do you properly activate your town, your gut microbiome?
This has been my field of study for over 20 years. And it's so exciting because each of us has so much power and control over our health and how our body functions.
You are the mayor of this town. You are literally holding the keys that runs it all.
All right, let's open this up and go through everything you need to properly activate the gut microbiome. Grab a pen and paper or open up your notes in your phone. This is the framework for what we need to bring our body into balance. This will also be in the show notes, so if you want to just listen right now and then go back and read it, it'll be right there for you.
The first thing you need in order to properly activate the gut microbiome are fine, highly absorbable whole food nutrients. Think real, not synthetics. These are nutrients created by the earth that are made to properly nourish your body. Think real, grown in the earth nutrition. Remember, color has nutrients.
Second, you need plant-based protein for its high absorption and ability to feed the lean tissues and stabilize the blood sugar. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to stabilize your blood sugar first in the day. Third, you need pre and probiotics, and not just any pre and probiotics, because they are not all created equal. You need pre and probiotics that are encased with an endospore. That endospore allows them to make the journey to the gut where they thrive. Otherwise, the stomach acid breaks them down and they no longer do what they are designed to do in the body.
Fourth, you need all nine essential amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. They help build the proteins that make up the tissues and organs of the body. They are vital for functions throughout the body, including protein synthesis, your tissue repair, and nutrient absorption.
Fifth, adaptogenic mushrooms. I love mushrooms. They are a powerhouse in the body. Not all mushrooms are adaptogens, so you need to make sure you're getting the ones that are. These mushrooms work to reduce the negative effects of stress in the body, which our bodies are constantly hit with every day. They enhance our resistance to stress and promote recovery and stability in the body. They also provide hormone support. They're an anti-inflammatory. They help to detoxify the body and support the liver. You've got to get those toxins out or you will not feel well.
Sixth, you need powerful antioxidants. Why? Antioxidants not only help to activate cells, but protect them. The adult human body has approximately 30 trillion cells. Healthy cells equal a healthy body. Just like what we talked about, our bodies are constantly hit with stress and things that try and attack our body and destroy or mutate our cells.
Of course, we can always be trying to reduce these attacks on our body by living a healthy lifestyle, and we all should be doing that. But we have to live and be in our world. Your phone, your computer, lights, pesticides in our food, walking by someone who's smoking, needing an x-ray, viruses, cleaning products with VOCs, chemical dyes, all of these things create cell damage. You must protect yourselves and antioxidants are the powerhouse that do it.
Seventh, you need vitamins and minerals. Again, natural sources, not synthetic. A complex of vitamins and minerals keeps everything in balance. Vitamins and minerals work together synergistically. I like to think of them as a big family. We have six kids, my husband is one of seven, family gatherings for us are big.
Think about your vitamins and minerals like your family and friends. Each person is unique and different and has their own place and purpose, but it's everyone working TOGETHER that makes all the difference. Vitamins and minerals need each other to keep that proper balance in the body. Again, these are natural, from the earth, not synthetic. This is what the body needs for proper uptake and to keep those cells healthy.
Eighth, neural and brain support. You must have something that supports a healthy mind. It doesn't matter if your body is healthy. If your mind is not active with good mental health, it all goes down.
Next, you collagen building protein peptides. We always talk about collagen helping with healthy skin, skin elasticity, hydration, and reducing wrinkles, which it does. It's amazing. But it also helps with joint pain, heart health, nourishes the gut microbiome, your bone density, to increase lean body mass and stimulate muscle growth. It aids in muscle recovery and helps the gut microbiome by acting as a prebiotic.
I love collagen by itself, but it's the collagen peptides that help the body produce more collagen on its own. And that is what we're trying to do. Get our body producing the things that it can on its own. The things it needs to be healthy and strong.
Our collagen production naturally decreases as we age. So taking those collagen peptides helps to stimulate our own natural production to offset the decline. You've got to get those in.
Tenth, sometimes the biggest hurdle we face in the morning is just waking up, being alert, full of energy, and ready for our day. Do you know what the biggest source of natural energy is? Your super greens. Greens naturally activate and nourish the adrenals. There is no crash like what you experience with caffeine because you have naturally activated those adrenals.
Absolute Energy Powerhouse.
Your super greens do so much good in the body. We feel that natural energy, which is awesome, but they also provide an array of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals. And remember, we talked about why those are so important. It's those vitamins and minerals working together synergistically that makes all the difference.
And last, you need digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes help to break down the nutrients so that you have proper absorption because your body can only build and repair with the nutrients it absorbs. Otherwise, you just create expensive urine.
Now with all these things, it is really important to make sure you have the proper balance and levels so that they are efficacious and actually do what they are designed to do in the body. I get really upset with products on the market today because so many just put a lacing of ingredients in their products so that they can put it on the label. But it isn't actually enough to do anything in the body.
You must have the right amounts that will properly activate and nourish the gut microbiome and those chemical messengers. All of these things we just went over work together synergistically to bring the body into balance.
I know all of this can sound overwhelming. I used to bring all of these together when I was single with individual products and foods while I was doing my heavy athletic training and competing when I was single. This was before I had children. And then you start having those little ones and you realize that your day and your time is no longer your own.
But my belief in bringing the body into balance is so strong because I know it is the key for optimal health. It is what helps us to look and feel our best. It is the gift we give our body every day because it helps our mind and our body to regenerate and be protected. For me, not doing this was not an option.
So the question for us was, how do we bring all of this together so that it's quick and easy and cost effective, so that it's not only something we enjoy the benefits of, but allows us to share with everyone?
