Why She Wrote Overcomer

SPEAKER_05

So I see that you are an author. Overcoming fear and anxiety to achieve your goals.

SPEAKER_07

Yes. So yeah, the book is Overcomer, Overcoming Fear to Achieve Your Goals. Yes, based on my personal journey of how uh I come over. I would say how I go across and over and make it through the other side every single time on conquering my fear and starting a business, doing something new, getting married, having children, you know, all of Oh my gosh. All of the things that that you have to be that you're taking risks is on, right? That you just so yeah, that's what the book is about. Um, but more so on the entrepreneur side of things. Okay. Of how I just basically trusted, yeah, about take the process and taking it one step at the time and overcoming what I have up until this point to do what I do.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. Well, if you don't mind, if we could start more at the beginning, what made you get into doing this and writing a book?

SPEAKER_07

Well, the book was a short-term project during the pandemic. Obviously, everything closed down, and I wanted to uh channel my energy positively, right? Like instead of you know being stuck in fear and uncertainty and all of the things. And also, my grandfather had his share in raising me. Um, and he had the most incredible story as he was a human activist and always had this dream of writing a book to leave uh his legacy behind. But unfortunately, he didn't he didn't it didn't happen. So part of that is probably my inspiration or have been inspired by him to write my own book and then leave something behind for my kids. Um and so that's why during the pandemic, I just said, you know, I'm gonna spend this time in putting my stories down. Oh that's how, yeah, that's how it

Immigration Roots And Becoming A Helper

SPEAKER_07

started. But prior to that, like why I do what I do now, honestly, it has been just a personal journey of healing myself and then taking myself through the transformations, and then you know, just taking care of myself physically, mentally, emotionally, and overcoming my own anxiety and burnout and also depression, and then of course, losing my best friend to suicide. So, all of that came together for me to realize that I I have the purpose and the responsibility to heal myself first and to help other people, you know, over overcome all of the challenges, especially mental and emotional challenges.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, so those mental and emotional challenges are so heavy, they are just like an extra 200 pounds on your body. It is just a lot. So you're back to your childhood. Did you want to discuss a little bit of your childhood? Because I think that molds you into what you decide to do as an adult. Did you have a traumatic childhood? It was it just a basically normal childhood.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. So I think I think for context, yes, absolutely. I don't mind going into it as far back as you know. I was I was born in Vietnam. I oh, you know, I I lived there until when I was 12. So technically I I migrated here as a first generation immigrant. Okay. Um, English is my second language. Uh so yeah, we can go as far as that, but definitely for sure. I always knew when I was a little girl that I wanted to help people. I know, did I know how I was going to help people? Absolutely not. I just remember recalled playing, pretend playing with my little cousin that I always asked him to pretend like he was broken and I was gonna fix it. So, you know, in a way, so it became like it came full circle when I when I realized, yeah, I I think I'm supposed to be a healer, a helper of some sort. And then hence, of course, long story short, that's why, you know, I coach, you know, based on my experience and really getting people to believe in themselves, you know, overcoming challenges, you know, mental, emotional, and also just really value themselves for who they are and really going after, you know, their dreams.

Business Coaching Meets Inner Work

SPEAKER_05

Wow, yes, definitely. How if someone came to you today, do they come to you because they have fear holding them back and they're depressed, or the do they come to you so that you can guide them um into their in their professional skills only?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, it's it's the other way. Yep, it's a professional skill. I fell into I have because of my brick and mortar experience, although when I got certified and discovered the coaching industry, uh was for holistic health coaching because I was healing myself. But because of my background in building my own businesses, people wanted me to teach them how to start their own businesses.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

So I fell into business development and business coaching. Okay. Soon, very soon after, a couple years in, I realized that people need more of a holistic approach to things. But on firsthand face value, people come just wanting to start businesses or make more money in their business. But ultimately, what they also and additionally to the strategy is also learning how to overcome mental challenges, right? When we are looking to execute a strategy and or working through things in our business, it's all about having the confidence, you know, to to execute and and and implement. So ultimately, yes, on a on face value, I'm helping them with the strategy and what they think they need. What they want in marketing, we call it. We'll give them what they want, but what they really need is true confidence in themselves that they're gonna be successful, you know.

SPEAKER_05

That's true. Confidence is a hard one, like in fear when you're taking that lunge into something unknown, such as a new business or whatever people want to do. Tell me a little about your you said you had a brick and mortar business.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. So I helped when I was in school, I was helping my mom with running her salon businesses. And then after that, she switched uh industry, salon, still service-based, from salon to restaurant. So she and I had a uh family restaurant for five years together. Oh wow, and that everything was built from scratch as well, too. So that's why when I told people that's you chose the hardest industry to be in, then I was like, I didn't know it was that hard until I got into and then learned, and then I and the minute I I could do that for five years, and I realized I can do anything.

Normalizing Fear And Testing Beliefs

SPEAKER_05

Right, I bet, I bet. So fear is such a strong holdback, it's a strong emotion. I don't know if you would say what do you tell people when they come to you and they're so afraid to move forward? They usually probably self-sabotage, but what do you tell them on the first time?

SPEAKER_07

You know, I I think what's really helpful for me in my experience and how I teach it is that it's really normal, right? Like it's it's we are designed to fear for our own safety and survival purposes. So I think rather than it's looking at it like a monster or something that we need to get rid of, and you never want to have to ever deal with it. My first instinct is to tell them that it's normal, it's it's part of who we are as humans. Now, the difference is that being able to uh see if the fear is rational or not, and is it really based on you know our our belief, and oftentimes it's a limiting belief, right? Like when we're we're choosing to be afraid of something. But the good news is I always give them the good, the good and the bad, right? Like that and the good news is that you're always going to be better at managing it, right? And to some point, like for me, based on my book and why I'm inspired to to write it and where I live my life now, is using fear as a catalyst for growth, right? Like when I know that I'm afraid doing something, oh, I'm on my edge there, right? Like there's an opportunity there for me to see what I'm capable of. So that's why it becomes more like an exciting thing versus something that we fear of having a fear, but rather is uh it's more like a thermometer, if you would say, right? Like of where you are and where you want to be, and then really normalizing that process of like, and unless we can really sit and see, okay, this is rational, this is not rational, I can control this, I cannot control this situation, then it becomes something that you know we get really skillful with. It's a skill, you know, like it's it's uh in terms of managing fear.

SPEAKER_05

Wow. So instead of being afraid and abandoning whatever they want to do, it's an opportunity to go forward instead of backwards. Yes. Wow, that's a whole different outlook on fear.

SPEAKER_07

Yes. And honestly, that's how that's how I view it, you know, these days. And yes, sometimes like I can be really fearful and making a decision, but then I also, because of my experience and how I've been learning to manage it, I would take a step back. I'll give myself the space that I need to do what I need to do, then come back to the decision-making process in a more objective way. But it's oftentimes it's just really managing myself emotionally because it is an emotion, right? Like being afraid of something is is an emotion, and we just be we need to be able to like learn how to regulate it, right? Like and and really embrace it versus something that we resist because we when we uh resist it, it persists, right?

SPEAKER_05

And so that's a good little thing, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

And it's it's more of really accepting is part of the process, especially if someone is choosing growth, if someone is choosing, you know, the next layer of success, it comes with a territory, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, now can is it difficult for some people to get out of that fear?

SPEAKER_07

No, I don't think so. I think it's a matter of someone being able to make change in a shorter amount of time, or versus someone needs a little longer time. It's really depends on how long they have been wired to operate from that state of being, if that

Fear As A Skill You Can Train

SPEAKER_07

makes sense. Some can be a really long time, exactly. And so just because we didn't just grow up, because I also have a theory the way I saw also feel like based on my experience and my background cognitive psychology, that fear is oftentimes taught, you know, to us to like, for example, I know I recall, you know, sometimes when my kids are climbing up high, I say, be careful, right? Like, I don't, reality is I don't know if they're going to fall or not, but because I was raised to keep them safe, so I'm telling them to be careful. Out of fear, we yeah, we oh, I'm afraid of them falling and breaking their arms, and so now like we shifted from being careful, meaning like it's something that that is already going to happen, training them to be afraid of heights. I now sell tell them be mindful of what you're doing, be mindful of your feet, be mindful of your hands, you know, when you're climbing, and so that becomes um a self-awareness of where they that I'm not teaching fear, if that makes sense.

SPEAKER_05

So it does. As a mom, it absolutely does. It's almost like, oh my god, be careful, you're gonna break your neck.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, right away.

SPEAKER_05

There's that fear that they're gonna break their neck in their heads now, right? Exactly. I never thought of that, honestly, at all. Like, yeah, it's just normal to say be careful.

SPEAKER_07

Yes, yeah. So honestly, that's why I because I had to overcome my fear of heights, and you know, which got me into this whole space of why are we so afraid? Especially these days. For example, I had the biggest fear of public speaking too. And you know, like again, like have made all the mistakes, learn everything the hard way to know what not to do now. But it's absolutely oftentimes, especially in today's, you know, society, fear is taught. Fear is taught, right? Like when you if you recall what what we we just knew that we were going to walk one day, right? And every single time we fell trying to learn how to walk, our parents never really had this thing of like, is she really going to walk? Right. But after that those first experiences, then we were teaching them like, be careful because you're climbing, or don't do that, that's dangerous, or because it had happened to someone else. Now it's something that we're we're perceiving for our kids when it hasn't even happened yet.

SPEAKER_05

You're right, you're right. So it's just a whole different way of looking at something, and I am so fascinated by that. Yeah, I'm so lucky to learn something from every person.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, but that's exactly amazing. Yeah, so that's honestly that's my take on fear. It's that we can't get rid of it, but we can get really skillful in in how we manage it, right? Like just like just like stress in life, that's normal. Just like fear in life, that's normal. I think if we can really normalize the conversation around it and really being able to see that it's nothing that we need to get rid of, it's part of who we are. But it's like, okay, can we what are we doing? And what kind of perspective do we need to have so that way it's serving us, right? Like looking at the fear of, oh, I know that's my edge. Oh, okay, I know I'm uncomfortable. Okay, that means what do I need to do? Maybe I need to prepare a little bit more. You know, that's that's what I learned through public speaking. Yes, before I overcame that it was judgment that I was afraid of. It was more of you know, disappointment that I was afraid of. It's not that it's not like I was afraid of saying what I needed to say, it's the mental, you know, fear of all of those things. And so I come across to to understand that there's no bear in the room. It's just because, you know, being rejected feels kind of like that. So I had to kind of work through it emotionally to realize, okay, well, that means I need to prepare,

Teaching Kids Mindfulness Over Fear

SPEAKER_07

you know, more diligently. That's exactly what I did with my very first made of honor speech. Literally practice that thing, like I knew it word for word. I I listened to it, I made a audio of me saying the speech, listening to it. I read it, I wrote it, like you name it, like so, like I literally practiced my seven-minute speech for like eight months straight. Wow. But then, but then I did it. That's when I that that's when I realized I was like, wow, it's really truly preparation. And then, yes, of course, really seeing what why was I afraid of that scenario, you know, why like and again, yeah, just I was I was taught to fear, you know, certain certain situations because also when I was growing up, I was taught to be quiet and you know, like as a you know, I need to be more permissive, like and and quiet and reserved because I'm a woman and things like that. But like all of that we're taught. So I have to do a lot of rewiring, you know, up into this day, you know, to make sure that no matter what it is that I'm going through when it comes to being afraid of something, it's okay. Normalizing it and then giving myself an opportunity to come through the other side.

SPEAKER_05

Wow. So you you shouldn't fear fear, like it's just an opportunity to grow.

SPEAKER_07

Yes. I love that. It's the catalyst, you know, for your own success. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_05

Yes, but it's so it could be so scary and paralyzing, like you said. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_07

And and do you see that? Like once once you do it, it's like the fear releases from you, like you like you now have control. Otherwise, it's like the fear controlling you instead of you're controlling the fear, right? And what's really crazy is that fear dies with action. You just do the thing, just like I overcame fear of height. I went skydiving. Oh my god. So it was it was as soon as I was done with skydiving, that was done. Now, do I love being on with like on high buildings? I don't love it, but at the same time, I know I'm gonna be okay. You know what I mean? It's just like it's that's why you know, behavioral therapy is what it is, you know. You don't have to go hardcore like that, but like it's it's just fear releases itself from you the minute you take action on it. That's why behavioral therapy works.

SPEAKER_05

You just oh, I can see one, yeah. Um conquer your fears right in the face. Um but how you were afraid of heights and then you went skydiving. But how did you do that? Did you say, okay, I'm just I'm gonna not bungee jump, I'm gonna go skydiving because I want to get over my fear, and you just pick the biggest thing. Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_07

All right. Yeah, and and because I was also trying to prove my theory to myself that because I was taught to be afraid of skydiving because something might happen. Well, just like what I share with you about, you know, with the kids, it's the same thing. So, so and honestly, it's it's just I I know freak accidents happen and things like that, but then I I I don't have to go there, you know. There's so many people that have done it, you know, and and it becomes a tool for when you need to help people or rescue people and things like that. So it can't be a bad thing, you know.

Public Speaking And The Power Of Preparation

SPEAKER_07

And so it's just a matter of being safe. And while my experience was crazy too, like I my harness was loose when we were up there.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_07

So they literally had to circle around three times so that way the instructor had more time to restrap me. So can you only imagine?

SPEAKER_04

We're gonna have been like, nope, nope, we're gonna go next.

SPEAKER_05

Wow. I mean, I don't know if I'd be able to continue. I would be I fear would then then turn into being petrified.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, yes, but it's like that level. Yeah, so it's but it turned out to be the top experience of of my life up until this point. I'm turning 44. Talking about yeah, just just just trusting, you know, yourself and just overcoming, overcoming fear, you know, especially something that is that is taught.

SPEAKER_05

So but you're not trusting yourself in that moment, you're giving it up because now you're trusting somebody else, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Like surrender, you're saying, yeah, like surrender. I think probably also faith too, right? Like just just whatever happens, happens. And but if you really think about it, that's how it is with flying. True, and we do it all the time, right?

SPEAKER_05

Okay, true, but you're not jumping out of the airplane, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

I guess that's the difference, right? Like you chose to get a seat on the airplane to go somewhere, but yeah, yeah, I yeah, I I have a I think it's just overcoming so many challenges in my personal life that now I just definitely know how to embrace it, especially now. I love having conversation like this to allow people to see that it's not something to be afraid of, right? It's part of it's part of the process, it's part of who we are. It comes with the territory when we want to step out into becoming another version of ourselves, you know. It's just what happens.

SPEAKER_05

Well, sure. Everyone wants to do the thing that they're scared of deep down, you know, like heights. You know, someone's afraid of heights, they do want to come over, you know, get over that fear. It's just hard. And you're like, bam, let's go, we're going skydiving.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. I mean, and uh yeah, there's like in the book too. There's another uh story that I told in the book where I went surfing and I don't know how to swim. So that's that's an that's another thing too. But I I just wrote in there and said that, you know, I know I don't know how to swim, but I know that I'm attached to the board, and if it requires me to hang on to the board for that for for my life, that's that's what I do. You know what I mean? It's almost like, yeah, you just you just on trust on what you can control and like leave the rest.

SPEAKER_05

That's a very good point because people like to be in control, especially of themselves. And it when we talked about the skydiving and I'm like, but now you're trusting this guy with the straps, not the airplane pilot, because I've I would trust him, but the guy that's gonna jump with you with your loose straps to begin with, that's hard to trust somebody else.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

With your own life. You know that's that's gotta be taught as well to give up that control.

SPEAKER_07

That control. Yeah exactly and and really to trust. Yeah that's uh that's huge. A lot of us has I mean even you know for myself for the longest time I had trust issues. Once you do it it's like the fear releases from you. Like you like you now have control. Otherwise it's like the fear controlling you instead of you controlling the fear right and what's really crazy is that fear dies with action. You just do the thing just like I overcame fear of height I went skydiving oh my god so it was it was as soon I was done with skydiving that was done. Now do I love being on with like on high buildings I don't love it but at the same time I know I'm gonna be okay. You know what I mean?

Skydiving To Break The Heights Fear

SPEAKER_07

It's just like it's that's why you know behavioral therapy is what it is you know you don't have to go hardcore like that but like it's it's just fear releases itself from you the minute you take action on it.

SPEAKER_05

That's why behavioral therapy works you just oh I can see why yeah um but how you were afraid of heights and then you went skydiving but how did you do that did you say okay I'm just I'm gonna not bungee jump I'm gonna go skydiving because I want to get over my fear and you just pick the biggest thing yeah okay all right yeah and and because I was also trying to prove my theory to myself that because I was taught to be afraid of skydiving because something might happen.

SPEAKER_07

Well just like what I share with you about you know with the kids it's the same thing. So so and honestly it's it's just I I know freak accidents happen and things like that but then I I I don't have to go there you know there's so many people that have done it you know and and it becomes a tool for when you need to help people or rescue people and things like that. Oh my god so they literally had to circle around three times so that way the instructor had more time to restrap me. So can you only imagine? I could have been like nope nope we're gonna go back no I'm just kidding wow I mean I don't know if I'd be able to continue I would be I fear would have then turned into being petrified yes yes but it's like that level yeah so it's but it turned out to be the top experience of of my life up until this point I'm turning 44 talking about yeah just just just trusting you know yourself um and just overcoming overcoming fear you know especially something that is that is taught so but you're not trusting yourself in that moment you're giving it up because now you're trusting somebody else yeah like surrender safe yeah like surrender I think probably also faith too right like just just whatever happens happens and but if you really think about it that's how it is with flying true and we do it all the time right okay but you're not jumping out of the airplane yes I guess that's the difference right like you chose to get a seat on the airplane to go somewhere but yeah yeah I yeah I I have a I think it's just overcoming so many challenges in my personal life that now I just definitely know how to embrace it especially now I love having conversation like this to allow people to see that it's not something to be afraid of right it's part of it's part of the process it's part of who we are it comes with the territory when we want to step out into becoming another version of ourselves you know it's just it's just what happens well sure everyone wants to do the thing that they're scared of deep down you know like heights you know someone's afraid of heights they do want to come over you know get over that fear it's just hard and you're like bam let's go we're going sky diving yeah I mean and uh yeah there's like in the book too there's another uh story that I told in the book where I went surfing and I don't know how to swim so that's that's an that's another thing too but I I just wrote in there and said that you know I know I don't know how to swim but I know that I'm attached to the board and if it requires me to hang on to the board for that for for my life that's that's what I do. SPEAKER_07

That control yeah exactly and and really to trust yeah that's uh that's huge a lot of us has I mean even you know for myself for the longest time I had trust issues so yeah I would love to have an opportunity to come and share my experience you know with your audience and you know collectively we can make a difference and anyone who is listening in to be inspired you know to take action absolutely to conquer to conquer the fear and go after what it is they want in life.

SPEAKER_05

This is huge like we have to deal with it every single day right like right but you don't think about it being an opportunity you're taught to run away from that fear to avoid it at all costs. Conquer your fear of course is a saying that people say but they don't know how to conquer their fear so it's really nice that you say okay we're gonna work overcoming this fear with behavioral therapy instead of just saying get over it.

SPEAKER_07

You know you'll be you you'll be fine just do it. Right. Yeah and and I think really I think the first step that was really uh transformative for me was accepting that it's okay to be afraid because there's a lot of shame no matter what we're afraid of there's a lot of shame around I shouldn't be afraid right like other people are public speaking and you know they're fine but it's I think it's definitely normalizing it. Normalizing it it's really okay it's a part of who you are and there's an opportunity to work through it and and you just learn how to manage it better over time.

SPEAKER_05

You know yes and you're there to help them and give them ideas and how to do it and that's just amazing I that's really awesome. I really like it I really like it.

Surrender Trust And Control

SPEAKER_05

Now do you besides just working with business people do you work with people individually to overcome you know like their fear of heights it doesn't have to be just business stuff right not specifically it's more related to business stuff but specifically we have a new program that I'm launching is called from worth to wealth is actually teaching people to charge the right pricing for their services.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah so people are actually mostly in my experience working with women women entrepreneurs is we're always undercharging because we're afraid that whether we don't have enough value or people are not going to buy it like the fear of rejection right like it so it's really getting people to get to even being able to buy into their own services and really stand behind that with confidence. Oftentimes it's a very practical way of really being able to dissect and look show them that oh my gosh this is your self-expertise you don't you're not thinking about it being valuable but this is how it's valuable and this is how it's translatable to your services. And that oftentimes in my experience that's what my clients have a disconnect in it's like they can't see the value beyond what they want to charge and oftentimes is much lower than than what is really worth right right so my my main thing is now really teaching women how to charge their worth so that connecting that with impact because guess what the more money we make the more the bigger the impact that we can create yeah that's true.

SPEAKER_05

But people women especially don't see past that first rock yeah they got to get over that one that you got to have that self-worth and that's really awesome that you can help teach them that in their business because you had such a a calm presence about you and you're so warm and opening open and it's really really nice.

SPEAKER_07

Oh my goodness yes I've been I've been through it so it's definitely yeah this is this is my work this is my legacy so yes if I can teach women honestly people ask me why why you want to make that teach them how to make money I'm like it's not money is is really truly yes the money is just a monetary reward but it's like it's I I at the end of the day I want them to be so feel so good about themselves and feel that they they have a high belief in who they are and just having the confidence to to to go out there and do whatever it is that you know they want become a better mom, becoming a better partner just because they can actually believe in themselves.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah you empower them is what you do. You give them all the tools I mean here they put

Surfing Without Swimming And Staying Present

all their insecurities and fears in front of you and then you give them the tools to conquer every little thing in their every big thing in their life to be successful. I mean that's incredible that's awesome and it's funny that I've never come across a health coach that works with women in business.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah yeah this is well I know it's it's like I know I wanted to be a health coach but if I guess if you could say I because we do do with a lot of mindset.

SPEAKER_05

So I guess mental health coach emotional mental yeah absolutely that's that's incredible now how long have you been doing this?

SPEAKER_07

This year is 10 years. I launched my business in 2015.

SPEAKER_05

Wow good for you has been it has been a journey for sure it definitely has evolved in terms of the offers that we create for our women business owners but ultimately the teachings are you know the same but 10 layers deep of course now do you go to women owned businesses and give speeches to like the women employees on how to be better, how to feel better, anything like that?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah so I do a lot of speaking of obviously podcast guesting. I do teach workshops as well. And then I also run a women's networking group it's called eWomen network where I just basically do business matchmaking just introducing women business owners to each other so they we can support each other. And then yeah and then my core business is running my coaching and consulting so you're not busy at all I if anything this year glad you said that is a great reminder because I'm actually looking to take things off of my schedule versus before it was besides that I also have two kids too I have three old my husband travels 80% of the time so it's definitely all about being intentional with with with what I'm doing and

you know why I'm doing it. SPEAKER_05

So we can rule the world yes absolutely well I really appreciate you taking time out of your extremely busy life just to have a chat with me about this. I I really appreciate it especially because I am new and you know I am just blessed to have you come on here and talk about your business and everything. And this was really fun I learned so much in such a little amount of time.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah I'm so glad and thank you to Michelle I know it takes time energy and effort to put together a podcast so just trust that this is how you're going to be found and heard and I so appreciate your taking the time to do that and having me on.

SPEAKER_05

Absolutely what did you think of Didi's story? I thought that skydiving story was absolutely petrifying I don't know how she could go back and do it again but she is one brave woman she has gotten through so much stuff in her life and her story is very inspiring. So I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and remember you are never alone. Have a great day
