Why Your Dog Refuses to Eat Breakfast
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Does your dog turn their nose up at breakfast but devour their dinner? Many pet parents worry when their dog skips a meal, but as Dr. Randy Aronson explains, this behavior is often completely normal and rooted in a dog's natural biological clock. In this episode, we explore why some dogs are simply "not morning eaters" and how they are often better at regulating their hunger than we give them credit for. We also dive into fascinating new data from the Dog Aging Project—a study of 50,000 dogs—which suggests that calorie restriction and intermittent eating patterns can actually lead to a longer, healthier life.
However, a sudden shift in appetite pattern can sometimes be a "canary in the coal mine" for underlying health issues. Dr. Randy breaks down the "differential list" every owner should know, from simple acid reflux and "bilious vomiting" to more serious metabolic concerns like kidney, liver, or endocrine issues. Whether your dog is just self-regulating or showing early signs of dental pain, this video will help you understand how to watch for trends and when it's time to consult your integrative veterinarian.

Okay, what about the dog that refuses to eat breakfast?
Okay, so today we have a question from an owner asking, my dog refuses to eat breakfast, but then devours his dinner. So what could be causing that? This came from no name, just so you know. This came from no name. That's so exciting. I know, anonymous, but that's okay. So, you know, some dogs ⁓ aren't morning eaters, you know. I always remind people that in the wild, dogs basically eat every few days and ⁓ they weren't set on, you know, twice a day meals or what are normal, you
maybe biological clock may look like. So I tell people, don't always be concerned about it, especially if they're maintaining a healthy weight, their stool is normal, they eat a full dinner. ⁓ Basically those are, and also maybe their energy level is okay. Those are good. I think some dogs are just really good at regulating when they're hungry and when they're not, they know. And I do tell my ⁓ pet parents and guardians that the Dog Aging Project looked at a longevity study very recently
in 50,000 dogs and they found that dogs that had some calorie restriction actually lived on average two and a half years longer. So we're not always focused on two squares a day, honestly. ⁓ So there's some things that we can probably lean into with this. Like, do they have any nausea in the morning? Are they vomiting occasionally? Could this be like acid reflux? Yeah, that's a good point. ⁓ Bileous vomiting, like this is vomiting with yellow foam in it, can really happen before
they eat. And it could be a hyper acidity, but it could be other things going on.
Sometimes dogs that have dental pain or cats that have dental pain aren't going to eat first thing in the morning. They actually eat later on because it's easier to work through that, quite honestly. love that you've made this differential list for this. in older dogs, like if there's appetite pattern shifts, like your dog always ate in the morning and now all of a sudden doesn't, this could be a clue to some metabolic diseases like kidney, liver, ⁓ endocrine, know, hormonal type diseases. So we have to be careful with that.
So it's not weird, it may be necessary, not necessary to worry about it, but if a sudden shift is there, that is a concern. So be aware of that. So watch for trends, you know. So we can really kind of figure that out and make a decision whether it's something we need to worry about or not. Absolutely. Wow, that was super comprehensive. You did a great job with that. Well, thank you for your help. And I don't know that I was that helpful, but I loved listening. And thank you guys for the question. Shout out anonymous person who asked that.
