Why Your Cat Has the "Midnight Zoomies" (And How to Stop It)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Calling all cat parents: Is your cat sprinting through the house or "terrorizing" your pillows at 2 a.m.? In this episode, Dr. Randy Aronson explains the biological truth behind the "midnight zoomies" and why this behavior is actually hardwired into your feline friend. He and his co-host Olivia Sacci dive into the concept of crepuscular behavior—natural activity peaks at dawn and dusk—and how your cat's evolution as a solitary hunter influences their nighttime energy bursts.
Dr. Randy shares practical, integrative strategies to help your cat (and you!) get a better night's sleep. Using the "A" for Activity from his signature CATS mnemonic, he discusses the importance of mental stimulation, interactive play like "stalking" your cat, and the strategic timing of meals to reduce hunting instincts. If you're looking for expert veterinary advice on feline behavior and enrichment, this video provides the tools to strengthen the human-animal bond while managing nighttime activity.

So your cat has the zoomies at 2 a.m. What is going on?
Perfect, so today's question is from Lynette. She's asking, why does my cat sprint through the house at 2 a.m. like something's chasing her? Well, it could be what we call the midnight zoomies. Or it could be, do you have an orange cat? ⁓
And this could be a completely normal feline behavior, quite honestly. But cats are what they call crepuscular. So that's a word that is new to me too. But that means that their natural peak activity occurs at dawn and dusk. There you go. So those of you who didn't know crepuscular, now you know what that means. Myself included. Me too. But the best of cats evolved as what we call solitary hunters. And they often do that. They also stalk their prey at very low light hours. So 2 a.m.
energy boosts can be biologically wired into your cat. That's so... Which you know some people don't realize. Yeah, no and when I'm trying to sleep at 2 a.m. and my orange cat starts digging at the pillow next to me, sometimes it doesn't cross my mind that this is a biological behavior. There you go. ⁓ stored energy, plus instinct, plus nighttime quiet.
could be hunting stimulation. You know what? And that makes sense. So what would you do in that scenario to keep that human animal bond between Lena and her cat good? Well, I always tell people this is where the A in activity for my mnemonic CATS comes in. is the pneumonic? Oh.
We will talk about that, CATS is complete nutrition and microbiome. A is activity. T is for teeth and S is for stress reduction. And I don't mean like lowering the temperature in your house. I mean, stress reduction, like eliminating PFAS and air fresheners and spray on things. But the A for activity is critical because you have to really spend some time with your cat. And most people think that's not an
necessity, but it is, you things like using a laser pointer or mental stimulation games, which are out there. Or I've talked about it before, even getting on the ground and stalking your cat. Absolutely. Silver foil ball rolled a, you know, a feather toy. I mean, there are so many different things that that so activity is really important because the more active you keep your cat during the day, the more apt they are to maybe mellow at night. Right. So they can they can sleep. And so playing hard before they're
that time is really a idea. You can feed a small meal after you play with them. Okay. Because usually if they have to digest that they mellow down and they have to work on doing that too. Maybe it reduces a little bit of that instinct of a need to hunt. Because they said I have my meal. So remember if you burn the energy before you go to sleep, you may be able to get your own sleep. Okay. I love that idea. We should get t-shirts that say that. Yeah. Also Lynette if you want more information on that we did film another podcast about 5 ways to improve your cat's life. Some of that
that did talk about activity enrichment, that sort of thing. So you might want to check that out as well. But thank you so much for your question. Makes me think of my own orange cat and how he terrorizes us. ⁓ And if you guys have any other questions, please feel free to add them to the social media accounts.
