Welcome to Closer to Venus. I'm Johnny Burke, and today's guest is Craig Meriweather. He's a certified clinical hypnotherapist, author of the Past Lives Guidebook, and founder of Sacred Mystery Hypnotherapy, where he helps clients explore the journey of the soul through past life regression and spiritual hypnotherapy, often resolving emotional patterns that haven't responded to traditional approaches. Craig, welcome to the program.

Craig Meriwether

Appreciate it, Johnny. I've been looking forward to it. It's really fun and interesting, and I'm ready to get going. The name Sacred Mystery Hypnotherapy reminds me of the mystery schools, the ancient mystery schools, which, among other things, explored the science of the afterlife. Is there a connection there or I thought the coolest name would be uh Divinus Arcana? And then I realized after I kind of set it up as divinusarcana.com, I thought no one's going to remember how to spell that or remember the name, but it's Latin for sacred mystery, and so I was like, let's just call it sacred mystery. So how did you become involved with past life regression? Yeah, a short version of it all is I grew up in the church, in the Episcopal Church. There's just a church that was up the street from our house where I grew up. And it's not that my parents were especially religious. That's what you did. And I started going to a Baptist school from sixth grade to uh twelfth grade. Private school was run by the Baptist. So I was getting Baptist education Monday through Friday, Bible class and chapel at least once a week. And then that religious experience was my upbringing from day one to about 18, 19 years old. So it really informed my life and what I started equating happiness to the more spiritual experiences that I was having. Because in my teenage years, I really started struggling with depression and anxiety, and uh really informed my life. So the two things that really influenced me growing up were depression, anxiety, and spirituality. And so I started really trying to create those experiences as I moved into my twenties, going to university, UC Santa Cruz, and it was this cliched melting pot of different people from around the world, and you learn about different cultures and different people and start having conversations about philosophy and theology and spirituality, and you learn things about reincarnation, things I didn't have any knowledge about or experience with, and so my worldview just started widening. They don't teach you that in church. No, at least not yet, not the Episcopal Church. Definitely, certainly not the Baptists. At the same time, this positive personal development self-help movement really gained a second energy in the 1990s, on top of the internet coming out. A slow drip of the internet with our 14-4 modems and taking 18 hours to download a picture and all that. Remember that stuff? Yeah, that was painful. Yeah. But you can have discussions and you have forums and discussion groups and blog posts. And so all that was informing my wanting to heal the anxiety and depression and figure that out. And one of the things I started using was hypnotherapy. What's fascinating about it in terms of tapping into the power of your own subconscious mind, the placebo effect. Unfortunately, with movies and TV shows, there's this kind of misconception that's control and mind control and brainwashing and turning people into zombies and Manchurian candidates to go assassinate the Prime Minister. Nothing like that. No, it's nothing, which is really unfortunate because it's an extraordinary way of tapping into your own healing power, again, like the placebo effect. Only not only just for physical healing, but for emotional healing you can create. As well as more spiritual work, a deeper way of connecting into your higher self, into maybe spirit guides, and one of those aspects is a whole past life experience. I really didn't get too far into the past life thing because I was I'm very skeptical and uh critical of a lot of things that seem out there and beyond what I understood growing up. Are you still skeptical? Oh yeah. That's why I wrote the book, is because of my skepticism of it all. It was my own kind of spontaneous past life experience that really sent me down that path. That was about 11, 12 years ago of that aspect of hypnotherapy. It wasn't hypnotherapy, it was just I was having a meditative kind of experience with a friend, and this experience happened for me, which made me want to understand it more. And that's when I really decided to pivot later in life and actually become a hypnotherapist because of the spiritual components to it. And even then it was like, I don't know, how does this work? What's going on with the brain? Everybody's talking about the pineal gland. That's become a hot topic over the last 10 years. What's going on in terms of consciousness being non-local? That was proven with the remote viewing experiments the government was doing back in the 70s and 80s. And not only non-local that consciousness can move around, but that consciousness can move forward and backwards in time. The government, taxpayer money, proving that. On top of what's going on with the whole theories around reality being a computer simulation, or maybe it's the holographic universe, or maybe it's parallel universes, or the multiverse, or can you look into the future? And I started researching all this for my own fun and just curiosity and skepticism. It just ended up, well, this looks like maybe a book. You got involved in past life regression because you were curious about how it could give someone some spiritual satisfaction. What made you really want to start practicing it as a hypnotherapist? It just resonated with me. I used it so much in my own life in terms of my own healing. I wasn't very interested in ayahuasca or LSD or using the more plant medicine or psychedelics to have those experiences, but I found hypnotherapy a way to have more control over it and maybe even go a bit deeper with it. All right. So when you started practicing that, because I notice you have different types of regression in your practice. You have past life regression and you have spiritual regression. Now, is that the life between lives variety, or is that something different? Yeah, if you go to my website, I'll just say spiritual hypotherapy as a kind of general what is it you want to work on? We'll work on that. But people are sometimes specifically looking for past life regression. Part of that is the life between lives. We always do life between lives. That's that spirit world, that's what Michael Newton talks about in his book, Journey of Souls, where it's not specifically a past life, but being in that soul state where you can create healing, you can reunite with your soul group, your soul friends, and find out more information about why you came to this life. If this is a classroom, if this is about learning, what are you here to learn? What are you here to know or to resolve? Moving into that life between lives and that maybe current life viewing room, as Michael Newton describes it, may give you more information, more wisdom and insights into your purpose, into your ultimate goals here in this life, what you're here for, who's here to help you, and uh what you need to resolve. It's like casting a movie almost. Yeah. And maybe even a better analogy is a theater group. They're working on different roles that are challenging so they can grow. When was your first experience with a client where they recalled that past life and you got the feeling that they were just not making it up and it's not their imagination? All of them, and to a certain extent, they're all fairly incredible and fascinating. The first one were really just kind of sent the hairs up the back of my neck. I was working with somebody and we're doing some deep healing work. This is actually in training when I was going to Hypnotherapy Academy of America. Great training, 500 hours of intense hypnotherapy training. That includes about 100 hours of past life regression. We weren't necessarily doing past life regression, we were doing more kind of trauma healing, trauma relief. I was working with one of the other students in the class. And what was fascinating about it is she's a psychotherapist. She's got her master's degree. So it's not like she's a, I don't mean to say this derogatorily, but like a woo-woo person. She's very centered and grounded, want to learn hypnotherapy to help her with her clients and the practice that she has. And I was working with her, and we're doing this process where you're healing trauma and you want to bookend it with two positive experiences before and after. So you want to ground it out, sort of, between these two wonderful experiences. And the issue she was dealing with was so early on in childhood, like one or two years old, that the experience she needed to connect to was being in the womb. And she had this extraordinary experience of being back in the womb because there was no other safe place for her to be. And that's the first time that the hairs kind of went up on the back of my head. I've had others even had somebody go to the spiritual library that Michael Newton refers to in his book, which was like in and of itself, was like, whoa, that's wild. That book is wild. In a good way, both of his books. Are you referring to the Akashic Records as the spiritual library? You can call it that. I think a lot of people use the term Akashic Records as a metaphor for that universal knowledge or tapping into the universal knowledge. Maybe it's a collective unconscious or something. I think it's a great symbolic metaphoric way of discussing it. It's relatively new. That term didn't even come into the lexicon, if you will, until like late 1800s. But it was Edgar Casey who really made it famous, and when he was doing it more spiritual stuff, he started saying that he was gaining his information from the Kashrik Records. So, in and of itself, the Kashrik records didn't really become a popular term until Edgar Casey started using it in the 1920s, 1930s. So really that term is only about a hundred years old. We've had 15,000 years of people maybe doing the spiritual work. If you go all the way back to go back to Ektepe and Turkey, that they're digging up and realizing that even at the last ice age, people had this extraordinary ability to tap into the spiritual side of things. And if you want to call it the universe, your universal energy or Akashic Records, I think it's all the same thing. It seems like that. So when we talk about the masters, like you brought up Edgar Casey, have you seen casework, clients that you've actually worked on that actually mirrored some of the experience that you read about with Casey or for that matter, Michael Newton or Brian Weiss, even? Yeah, I see a lot with Michael Newton just because again, it's that I won't discuss every place that Michael Newton discusses in his books that you go to, you can go to. And so when they go to a place that they're not familiar with his books, they don't even know who he is. I may talk about it a little bit, but I don't mention everything, and they go to a place like and even like Dolores Cannon and her work with different planets, different parallel universes or something. And I had somebody go to a spiritual library and on the table was a book, and she described in great detail how it was designed and kind of maybe ornately imprinted with the leather, and she opened it up and every chapter was a life on a different planet that she experienced. And so again, it's like the hair goes up on the back of your neck and it's kind of it's really uh extraordinary. Speaking of extraordinary, especially when someone not only describes, let's say, a life on another planet, but a life let's say a man describes a life as a woman, or a white person describes when he was an Asian or an Eskimo, whatever. And it seems like it's their memory. That's gotta really freak them out a little bit, doesn't it? Yeah, sometimes it does. Depending on the person you're working with, everything's a more individualized to that person. And eventually I'll like ask in the past life they're having a memory of experiencing. Maybe we'll do multiple lives if that's the experience they want, or maybe one specific one and just go in deeper when we finally get around to, you know, how old are you? And where do you sense you may be and what's going on? We're asking these questions, or we're having a conversation, just like we're having, because you're narrating your experience, not only for me to help facilitate the experience, but also for the recording so you can listen to it later and the transcript that can be created around it. And eventually it'll go, yeah, I seem to be the opposite gender. Some people are like more accepting, and other people are like surprised by it. But I think you come to this work, you're understanding that you're quite possibly you may be in other cultures, other places on earth, in other times, and so the idea that you may be another gender also comes in with that. Have you had clients go back to, let's say, ancient civilizations? Yeah, there's actually a term for it in the biz of past-life progression, it's called Atlantis syndrome. And what's fascinating about it is they'll start describing their experience, narrating their experience as it opens up to them. Because we're kind of pulling in this 5D digital information to this 3D analog brain. So there's some processing and some translating and some accommodating of the information. And so as it's opening up to them, describing it, and it's so fantastical and extraordinary, they say, I must be an Atlantis. When people start describing that as you ask questions, not leading questions, but just more investigative questions, you find out they're actually on another planet. They just don't know how to describe it. And when you ask more questions about it, they find themselves to maybe even not be so human as more of an alien being. Or a light being. Or sea creature-ish being, or again, quite incredible. And so it's extraordinary that we were able to tap into this information. Again, whether you want to call the Akashic Records or Universal Energy or Collective Unconscious or whatever it may be, however you want to describe it. But our ability to pull in these memories, not only like remembering high school, and maybe I'm asking leading questions about high school, and what high school did you go to? Was it a big school, a small school, medium school, and who are your friends, and were you doing sports, were you doing music, whatever are you doing? You have the ability to remember that. Or your earliest memory. I ask you about your earliest memory, and then start asking questions as you describe your earliest memories. It's the same. It's not like you're time traveling. It's not Marty McFly and Back to the Future. You're not going back in time. You're just remembering. You're just accessing memory. And again, a lot of this research that I put in the book, the Past Lives Guidebook, is this brain of ours doesn't seem to be a warehouse of memories. It seems to be a receiver and transmitter, like an antenna that pulls in this information from the Koshirk records or universal energy or whatever. Ian Stevenson not only discovered children in different non-American cultures that could not only remember the lives, the past lives, he could basically confirm them. He would find that person's surviving family members and the children in these cases would have private information that could have never gotten anywhere. The thing is what I find fascinating about this, and people have poked holes here and there in terms of investigations, but let's say 90% of the investigations he did were flawed in one way and can be proven not to be true. That still means 10% are real. And there's this great quote by William James, one of the kind of modern pioneers of psychotherapy. And William James said, To prove all crows are not black, you only need one white crow? If someone were to take the skeptic position, I seriously doubt 90% were flawed. Maybe it's more like maybe 10% were flawed, because again, how does some eight-year-old kid know about a fleet of retired World War II pilots that can't remember the kid's name, but he went to the reunion and he would describe the relationships he had with each member. How do you explain that? Yeah, I know you're talking about the book is Soul Survivor. There's a documentary on YouTube, and I forget the kid's name too. He's probably in his twenties at this point. But what was fascinating about his story is his family is very uh Christian, very religious. And his father, in trying to prove uh you know, or to almost enhance his faith, to prove that what his son was experiencing was just his imagination, the more he proved that his son was experiencing was real. And it's a wonderful story that's fairly modern. I think that was the early 2000s or so. So, in and of itself, relatively, because sometimes you say, oh, that story happened in the 70s or happened in the 1950s, happened in the late 1800s. Here's this kid, you can actually talk to him and have a more modern uh experience of it. And even like the Brian Weiss book, Many Lives, Many Masters. Catherine, I think, is the name of the person you described it. What I find fascinating about Ian Stevenson, about Michael Newton, about Brian Weiss, is these are left-brain analytical academics. They're all like have master's degree. I mean, Brian Weiss and Dr. Newton, Dr. Newton's a psychotherapist, had a master's degree, and as well as his PhD. Brian Weiss is a medical doctor, still alive. 83, he's doing a workshop this summer at a Mago Institute, 83 years old, has his medical degree from Yale, a bachelor's in chemistry from Columbia, one of the early researchers of Alzheimer's in the 70s. But he was working with a client for about a year, and is all he knew about psychiatry and helping her with her anxiety and her issues, her fears. And he accidentally, just like Michael Denton, accidentally regressed her into a past life. And she did a great extraordinary healing there, and he thought it was symbolic and metaphoric, the subconscious mind finding a symbolic way to create healing. And so they did some more work, and she was getting such detailed information. This is 1980, so again, no internet. So he could confirm this stuff with his contacts at Yale. Real Egyptologist, real archaeologist. She was getting such detailed information. And she was getting information about his own personal life. Things like he had a young child, about one year old, pass away that nobody knew about. It wasn't obituary, and even it was in a different state. There's no way she could know this information. The only conclusion he could come to, sort of like Sherlock Holmes thing, when you eliminate the impossible, whatever's left over, however improbable, has to be the answer. She must be having a past life regression. And he basically took the biggest risk and put his career on the line and wrote that book. There was no guarantee that was going to become as popular as it did, that Oprah would like it and have him on their show. And I think people resonated with Brian Weiss is because he was a doctor, he was coming from that analytical academic sense of like this is the experience. Let's look into this. Okay. Let's talk about spirit guides, the type of spirit guides, the type of beings that come up in your sessions with your clients. What can you tell us about that? Yeah, that's one that is very important, I think, to people to connect with spirit guide. That's something we do in the life between lives. A session will involve a past life that may be connected to your current life. Maybe there's healing or resolution that needs to happen, or just out of curiosity, what your most spiritual past life or past life you had with a romantic past life with a soulmate or something like that. But oftentimes it's around a healing, maybe an emotional issue or feelings of anger or anxiety. But once that life comes to an end, and that's very important to get to that point because that's where a lot of the thoughts and feelings about that life, about love, about money, may be connected to your current life. But then you move into spirit form and go up into that life between lives, spirit world, soul realm. And one of the things to do would be connect with your spirit guide, and that's very important. It happens in that space then. Yeah. Now, again, this is 5D digital information being processed by a 3D analog brain. Some people in a sense maybe a more angelic figure. Maybe somebody that they personally connect with, like their grandmother or a teacher or a good friend or something, meets them there. Now, is that person's grandmother really in a human bodily form up in spirit world? I'm guessing not. But in order to kind of access that information and translate it so we understand it's almost my grandmother. My grandmother was a big part of my educational learning and was attuned spiritually with me, and maybe, yeah, my grandmother was my spirit guide in human form. And they're getting this information as translated by the human brain. And so people will experience their guide in different ways. Maybe they see it like a as an essence of light or an energy or certain kind of color or energy wave or something like that, or maybe more of a spirit animal. I think that's just a way for our own human brains to help us understand our spirit guide. And you can continue that connection. You make that connection and thus create a way for you to easily connect with your spirit guide on maybe a daily, if not weekly, basis. You describe yourself as a skeptic. Do you think that affects your work with past-life regression and spiritual hypnotherapy or not necessarily? No, it never did. And that's again, like the years of kind of researching it and going through it. I'm a skeptic in the sense that I'm just not going to believe it because somebody says it's that's the way it is. There's a lot of people out there that claim to know they have the answers, or maybe they're channeling it or something. It's okay. I don't know. I want to investigate more. And so my skepticism comes in the form of curiosity of I want to understand more. If somebody talks about this reality being a computer simulation, okay, that sounds interesting. I want to investigate that more. As far as the work that you've seen, you've witnessed with your own eyes and ears, the past life testimony, the life between lives testimony, does that have the ring of truth to it? Yeah. When I work with people, they're having an intense, possibly even an emotional experience. I can't prove that their experience is actually real unless they're getting extraordinarily detailed information like an address or something that can be looked up in a historical context that's maybe not widely known. It may be more of a metaphoric symbolic healing the subconscious mind is creating. That does not negate that this is real. Again, I think Brian Weiss proved it in Many Lives Meaning Masters, let alone Ian Stevenson, let alone Michael Newton. I think there's enough evidence to show that this is real. Now, if that person in and of themselves, we could have a great conversation. Afterwards about whether it's quote unquote real or not. What's important is the healing, the resolution, and the information about purpose or ultimate goals and how they move forward in this life that they're gaining. Now, is that coming as a representation of the subconscious mind that already knew it? Or are they tapping into their higher self, their spirit guide, life between lives? I've had enough experiences with people where I was like, yeah, that had to have been them up in the soul world. But my focus when I'm working with somebody is about the healing and the resolution they may be needing to create around emotional issues of anger or resentment or anxiety that they can't find a solution to, maybe with talk therapy or some other methods, or maybe just wanting to gain more information about their purpose or their ultimate goals in life. That's coming from life between lives or a past life or their own subconscious mind. I'm fine either way. Aaron Ross Powell The healing episodes, like when someone comes to you and they have, let's say, a bad back and then they have a past life memory of being stabbed in the back, and then they process that and then they start to feel better. It's a crude example, but have you seen anything like that in some of your sessions? Yeah. I start off the book. The very first line of the introduction is from an email I got from somebody, and they reach out after a few days just if you have any questions, I'd love to hear about your what other insights you've uh had. And she wrote me back about three days after her past life. She says, the 20 years of chronic hip pain I've had is now gone because of the past life experience. And you'd been to the doctors and the x-rays and the MRIs and the physical therapists, and nothing worked, and she just lived with it. I didn't even know she had hip pain. We didn't talk about it, we weren't working on it. She just lived with it. And we're doing a healing because we always go to the healing place in the life between lives, because there may be healing unknown that you need to deal with. And part of that is maybe you see any cords connecting you to a past life, known or unknown to you. Maybe the one you just uh remembered and experienced, or maybe lives you're unaware of at the moment. And these cords, maybe there's one, maybe there's a handful, maybe there's many, maybe they're big, small, and she pulled it out of her hip. She had a big cord attached to her hip. And in fact, she tried to pull it out, couldn't, and this is her description of it. She asked her spirit guide to help her pull it out. Spirit guide couldn't help, couldn't get it out. So they did one of those tug-of-war things where they had a bunch of spirit beings with the cord pulling it out of her hip and then finally released. So a spirit guide was literally pulling this cord out of her hip. It's like, okay, were they really pulling out a cord of her hip? Well, it's probably more of a metaphoric way, again, of this 5D digital information in this 3D analog brain. Pulled it out and three, four days later when she emailed me, uh she said, Yeah, I haven't had hip pain in four days. After 20 years of chronic hip pain, it's gone because of that. And speaking of pain and healing, you believe that certain types of emotional patterns don't originate in this particular lifetime. Why is that? Yeah, a lot of people come to this work. We'll get on a phone call, like a consultation call to see if this is a right fit and a good match. And they say, Well, I've done years of talk therapy, EDMR. It's been helpful, but I still feel angry. I still feel resentful, I still feel anxious, I still am afraid of deep ocean water, even though I live in the mountains of Arizona, I've never seen the ocean. There's these issues that it's like, I've done the work, I've done the work, I've done the work, and then they read Brian Weiss, or they read Michael Newton or Ian Stevenson or Dolores Cannon or my book, Past Lives Guide Book, and they think this resonates with me. This feels familiar, this feels comfortable, this seems to me, in terms of the healing work I've done over the years, that this is the route to go, because this feels right, that it's related to a past life. And these aren't necessarily, again, spiritual or woo-woo new agey people. They're just like, oh, I read that book and that made a lot of sense to me. And I think this may be connected there because I I've done all the healing work and it's still there. Do you think that this type of work is going to get uh increasingly popular in the future? I think so. Certainly Brian Weiss was a leader in 1988 with many lives, many masters, then uh Michael Newton in 1992. Certainly there's earlier pioneers like Dick Sutfin and Dolores Cannon. But I think as people can gain access to this information through YouTube videos, podcast episodes, I know there's a lot of people out there discussing this on Instagram and stuff, that I think will get more popular because the understanding of it will be easier to gain insights and the information around it. That's my thought as well. I think it's going to become a bit more popular, especially now. I notice that there's actually a certification for life between lives therapy, which I thought was interesting because I think that's one of the more important ones that can really shed light on why we have these emotional blocks and so on and so forth. Future life progression. Now, is this part of your work? Not specifically what I find about future, it can be very helpful. Now, there's two kind of futures. There's future of this life. Like I want to see what's happening 20 years from now. There's also what's happening 500 years. What's my future person going to be? Or my future incarnation or avatar that I'm going to be a thousand years from now. What's interesting about this is not only you can see a future potential, because you're not predicting the future, it's like, well, this is one potential that could happen. And you may look at it as if maybe you're in an argument with your brother and you haven't talked to your brother in ten years because of this issue. And you can look into the future and say, we just die old and miserable and angry. And but if I reconcile, if I look into the future and we've reconciled, now life is joyful and happy and prosperous. And you can see two alternate futures. One is I reconcile with my brother and leave the anger and hurt behind, or the other I don't. And what are the future outcomes of either one of those? That can be very helpful and useful. Sometimes with the more intense, let's go 200 years, 500 years, a thousand years into the future, some people have really bleak experiences of dystopian or nuclear fallout kind of damaged Earth. It gets really hopeless. I've noticed that experiencers will tell me when we talk about time is that when we're in that space, time is not linear like it is here. It's more like they exist all at the same time. Have you had someone that told you the same thing that in this experience, this session I just did, I was in a place that time was not linear. Yeah, and that's where it gets really fascinating because the nature of time may not really be a quote unquote past life. It may just be parallel universe or the multiverse. It's like in one of my lives in the multiverse, I am in 3 BC Egypt. Or I may be in 5692 or in a space station on Mars, or I may be on another planet, it's all happening now, and I'm just kind of getting glimpses through the door. So like somebody's playing a bunch of video games all at the same time. Maybe they had it one of those donut desks and they're in the middle and they have all these computers, and each is a different game that they're playing, but they're just focused on this screen. But they can go to this screen real quick and get some information. It's a little mind-bendy when you think about it. But yeah, past life regression may be a misnomer. It didn't happen a thousand years ago, it's happening right now. I've heard the same thing many times. Last question. What are the most important things you've learned from working with clients? The healing potential of it all, maybe carrying hurt and pain, just not unlike maybe somebody in their 70s or 80s who went through a traumatic experience, maybe years of abuse as a child, and some 70 years later is still holding on to that hurt and pain, and it's affecting how they see themselves, how they sense themselves as worthy or valuable or something like that. What if it's not so much a hurt and pain from a childhood experience, but from a past life, and it's still affecting you today? And so what I found with this work, you can do it out of curiosity, out of just interest, because you resonated with a book by Brian Weiss or Dolores Cannon or somebody. But a lot of people come to this work because they've discovered they can't release the hurt and pain because it doesn't seem to be associated with this life. And so that's the most important thing I find with this work, like helping people with. Or some people that can't resolve their issues through traditional approaches. Yeah, a lot of people, this is not the first on anybody's list, hypnotherapy or past life regression. We're at the bottom of the list. I work the witch doctors here of this work, which is really unfortunate because it even just in clinical hypnotherapy, there's so much healing you can tap into from your own subconscious mind. There's also a sense of control around it that maybe you don't get with ayahuasca or LSD or some of the other plant medicines or psychedelics that people use to get into these maltered states to tap into a spiritual side. So it's really about the healing you can create. And again, it's usually not a person's first thing. They try talk therapy, EDMR, all these other tapping and acupuncture and all these other things, which are very helpful and very useful, very healing. But they still find themselves stuck years later, still angry, still resentful. And yeah, this may be the way. Good, good. I think it's good information for people to know. Yeah, thank you.
