Speaker 2:

Hi everyone, god bless you, welcome and thank you for joining us this week on this episode of the podcast Joy in this Journey. Today we will be reading in Luke, chapter 10, verses 38 to 42. We read in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Now it happened as they went, that he entered a certain village and a certain woman named Martha welcomed him into her house and she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus feet and heard his word, but Martha was distracted with much serving and she approached him and said Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore told her to help me. And Jesus answered and said to her Martha, martha here worried and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part which will not be taken away from her. Here we see two sisters, martha and Mary, who received Jesus in two different ways. Martha was focused on serving Him, while Mary focused on something that Jesus referred to as the good part.

Speaker 2:

As children of God, we are called to serve and do for the kingdom of God. This, of course, is different for everyone. Many serve the kingdom of God through ministries, others work in the temple and others do missions across the world and help those who are in need. Jesus more than anyone knew that the work for the Kingdom of God was, and is still, a lot. Even so that, after visiting different villages and cities and seeing all the people coming to Him with great need for healing and suffering, he says in matthew, chapter 9, verses 37 to 38 then he said to his disciples the harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. The truth is that there is a lot of work to be done for the kingdom of God, and this is exactly what Martha was doing when she focused on serving Jesus. This is what many of us do when we solely focus on serving the Lord and His Kingdom, even to the point that some lose sleep while doing things for God. Or when some have calendars filled with events that they have to attend, preachings they have to do and many other things. None of these things are bad. On the contrary, they are very good and should be done even more when it's done for God's glory. Yet in this story of the Bible, god teaches us something different and interesting.

Speaker 2:

Martha, seeing that her sister wasn't helping her serve and that she chose to sit on Jesus feet, got so frustrated. Her frustration went to the point of calling Jesus out for not telling Mary to help her. But, to Martha's surprise, jesus answered, taught Martha and us a very important lesson there is a time for serving and there is a time for intimacy and being on the feet of Jesus. The difference between Martha and Mary was that Mary knew how to discern the time she was in. She knew who had taken the time to visit them, to visit them, and understood that it wasn't time to focus on serving, but that it was time to give her Lord and Savior all of her attention. Mary understood that there was a lot she needed to learn from Him and chose the best place to be on Jesus' feet. But also, it wasn't that Martha didn't recognize who was among them, but it was because she acknowledged who Jesus was is that she was so focused on serving and giving him the best.

Speaker 2:

Martha failed when she wasn't capable of understanding that it was time to be with the Lord, that it was time to listen to Him and His words. She didn't realize that being in intimacy with Him was more important than serving Him, important than serving Him. It is very important for us, as children, purpose under heaven a time to be born, a time to die, a time to plant and a time to block what is planted, a time to kill and a time to heal, a Time to break down, any time to build up. God has given us 24 hours in a day, and so we need to know how to distribute that time correctly, always remembering that, among all the things we need to do, only one thing is needed, just like Jesus told Martha, and the only thing that we all need is what Mary chose to be in the presence of God, sitting down on Jesus' feet.

Speaker 2:

Just like Mary, we believers need to discern and understand that there is a correct time to serve the kingdom of God, that there is a correct time to preach, teach and help, just like there is also a time to be thought, a time to be in the presence of God and a time to hear God's voice, a time for intimacy. We cannot afford to forget that, to stand strong in difficult times, we need to have a relationship with God and spend time with him, just like in Matthew, chapter 6, verse 33 says but seek first. The kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added to you. Just like Mary, let us learn how to recognize when it's time to leave everything aside and spend time at the feet of Jesus. May God continue to bless you all. I pray this has edified your lives to the glory of God. This is your sister in Christ, lauren.
