The Power of Obedience

Jessica Berrios Season 1 Episode 5

Have you ever felt the weight of a momentous decision, knowing that the path you choose could shape not just your own destiny but that of an entire community? This week on Joy in this Journey, we grapple with such a moment through the lens of Joshua, the successor to Moses, as the children of Israel stand at the threshold of the Promised Land. The episode is a deep exploration of the divine charge given to Joshua: to be unflinchingly strong and courageous, to unwaveringly adhere to the law, and to face the profound consequences of obedience versus disobedience—a theme echoed in the lives of biblical figures like Moses, Nadab, and Abihu.

This poignant narrative offers not just a glimpse into Joshua's daunting leadership role, but it also lays out a blueprint for success and prosperity rooted in diligent obedience to God's Word. As we dissect the sage advice imparted to Joshua to keep the law ever-present and to meditate on it continuously, we extend an invitation to you to mirror this commitment in your own life. The episode encourages the cultivation of a routine that allows God's teachings to nourish our souls and guide our families. Without a guest to distract, we focus solely on the message, a promise of growth and fulfillment through the disciplined embrace of spiritual wisdom. Embrace this episode as a mentor for your journey, and may every word spoken resonate with the power to transform and enrich your path forward.

Speaker 2:

God bless you all and welcome to another podcast episode from Join this Journey by Faithline. I am very excited to be here with you again. I am so blessed that God has opened this way for us to share what he has placed on our hearts, and I truly pray that you open your heart to him. Amen, and just let him have his way and let him speak to your life, minister to your soul and strengthen your spirit. Amen To go forward in this journey in him.

Speaker 2:

Today we will be reading in the book of Joshua, chapter 1, verses 7 and 8. And we read the word of the Lord, in the name of the Father, son and Holy Spirit, amen Only. Be strong and very courageous. That you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses, my servant, commanded. You Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left. That you may prosper wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night. That you may observe to do according to all that is written in it, for then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success.

Speaker 2:

A long-awaited day, anticipated for centuries, had finally come. The children of Israel were preparing to enter the promised land. Because of his disobedience, moses was not permitted to enter the promised land. But it was time for the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham, isaac and Jacob. Joshua became the new leader of Israel. God encourages him as he prepares to lead the people across the Jordan River and into the land of Canaan. Two commands are given which, if obeyed, will make Joshua prosperous and successful in his leadership of the Israelite nation.

Speaker 2:

In verse 7 we read of the Israelite nation. In verse 7 we read Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you. We must emphasize the word careful when it comes to obedience, because it is very easy to become disobedient. Wise leaders learn from the mistakes of others. Joshua knew that Moses was prevented from entering the promised land because he was not careful in obeying God. He disobeyed the Lord and we see in Numbers, chapter 20, verse 6 through 13,. When the Israelites complained about not having water to drink at Kadesh, god told Moses to speak to the rock and water would pour out, agitated by the people's behavior. Moses disobeyed God and struck the rock instead. God was not pleased and said because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites. You will not bring this community into the land I give them. Even though Moses was permitted to see the promised land, he was not permitted to enter. God expects obedience. Joshua had committed the earlier event to memory as well. Another Joshua remembered that Nadab and Abihu had died offering unauthorized or strange fire before the Lord in Leviticus, chapter 10, verse 1 and 2. What they did was contrary to his command. God expects obedience.

Speaker 2:

God encourages Joshua to commit himself to careful obedience to the law. With the command, there is a promise to be enjoyed. In verse 8, we read Keep this book of the law always on your lips, meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. God's instruction to Joshua is equally useful to us. To be familiar with the word Meditate on it day and night Sounds easy enough, but how do we accomplish this?

Speaker 2:

We must find time for the word. We must give God time to speak to us, to minister to us, and it's only through his word. We must, as Joshua took time to learn it and soak in it. God encourages us to do the same, and I know that life can get in the way, but we must must make time for God to speak to us. We need it, our souls need it, our mind needs it, our family, our homes, everything that is us, needs it. And so when we do take time out to soak in the word, we are different, everything becomes different, and God wants the good for us. God wants us to prosper and be prosperous.

Speaker 2:

Joshua was going to be a good leader. He was determined to be obedient. If we want the same, we must be wise and imitate Joshua, because God expects obedience and the only way we're going to obey is soaking in the word of God. It helps us to be right, it helps us to live right, it helps us to feel right. It's just right for us, and Joshua knew that, and he knew that this word was for him and took it in. And when you know that something is good for you, take it in. And God wants you to take this in, take it in, and God wants you to take this in.

Speaker 2:

At this moment, wherever you are, receive the word, soak in the word and maintain yourself in the word, because when you do, only good comes out of it. It helps us to be successful. And how is that being obedient, being obedient to the voice of the Lord? So if you're having a hard time being obedient, you must soak in the word of God, because it helps you obey your creator, and what he wants for us is the good. So let's be obedient, let's open ourselves up to the word of the Lord, let's pray.

Speaker 2:

Father, god, we come before you in Jesus name and we ask you to help us. Help us stay in the word, as Joshua did, god. He knew that the law was the good and he decided to stay in it because he knew that it was to be in obedience with you. And to be in obedience is to be in good standard, god. And and that's what we want, that's what we desire, and you know the struggles we go through, god, the the battles that come to move us, to move us out of obedience.

Speaker 2:

God, that we walk in disobedience. But in jesus name, god, I ask that you help us live lives to your accordance. God, wrap us, lord, help us every single day. Help us to not only read but to live your word. Help us, god, to make time for it. God, let us cut all excuses out and help us, lord, give you the time that you deserve, because in your word is what we need in life, it is our strength, it is in life, it is our strength, it is our air, it is our guidance, god, and let us understand, lord, that without you we cannot, we can't even make it.

Speaker 2:

Lord, give us the strength, god, to fight off all obstacles that come our way, to take the time that you deserve, help us deepen ourselves in the truth, because in the truth, your word says it set us free, and we need to be free from many things in our lives, many thoughts that have come to destroy us, god.

Speaker 2:

But your word has come to make us free and I ask you, in Jesus name, that you help us take the first step into freedom, that we can soak in your word and become free children, to exalt your name and show others that it is possible to know who you are and to be wholeheartedly willing to obey your voice, god, that we can be an example, god, to this generation, that it is possible to live according to your word.

Speaker 2:

And we thank you, god, because through your Holy Spirit, you make all things new. I want to thank you, god, I want to thank you for your love and your mercy and I want to thank you, god, for always wanting the good for us. Lead us, lord. Lead us through your word, lead us in your way, for we are your people and we are here, lord, to do as you will. Lord, thank you, jesus. We ask in Jesus' name Amen. I pray that this word has blessed your life and never forget to always soak in the word of the Lord, for it is our strength, and God is always there with you to give you the victory in living a life of obedience Until next time. This is your host, jj. God bless you.
