Breakthrough Boss coach and host Jovie J. Sumner encourages men to start pivoting perspectives when it comes to obstacles. It's easy to get caught up in what the obstacle you may be facing is, when in reality we can always find a way to turn obstacles into opportunities. This requires a willingness to shift into possibility thinking, changing your state, being ok with not being right, and looking for different perspectives. Remember he that seeks finds, so be willing 'to knock, seek, and ask'. Then trust and know that the screen of obstacles can and will turn into a 'Door' of opportunities.

Speaker 1:

Why do you keep focusing on obstacles and how can you start focusing on opportunities instead? Hey, what's up everyone? This is yours truly, joby J Sumner, breakthrough Boss host and founder, and today I want to welcome you to another great episode of the Daily Recharge, and today's Breakthrough Boss protocol of the day is how to turn obstacles into opportunities. So I've realized that a lot of times in life we all are going to have different obstacles that we run into, things that are unexpected and they come out of nowhere, and sometimes what happens is we allow ourselves to become way too focused on what the obstacles are, and it's OK to give ourselves a moment or carve out a small space of time 90 seconds, five minutes, no more. A small space of time 90 seconds, five minutes, no more. You know, if you're focusing on a problem for more than five minutes, then really you're in your head at that point. So the key is give yourself 90 seconds to five minutes to focus on what the challenge is and after that, shift into what the possibilities and the opportunities are for the challenge that you're facing and then let it go. We really want to put the majority of our time onto the solutions, and part of that is because, quite frankly, you'll just get lost in your head if you stay focused on what the problem is.

Speaker 1:

I really don't even like using that word. Let me change that word. I prefer the word challenge. And there is a difference. Words have meaning and there is a difference. Words have meaning. So let's say challenges or the obstacles. So when we look at that, and we know that, wherever we are putting our energy, you know where our focus goes. Energy flows. If we're focused on what the challenge is or what the obstacle is, that means we're not focused on really finding a way over or around it. We're not focused on what the opportunity is in it, and every single time we face a challenge, or gifts, as I like to call them. Even though it doesn't always feel that way, there really is always an opportunity. Whether it's an opportunity for growth, an opportunity to pivot, an opportunity to serve more, an opportunity to become more valuable or to change your perspective or your narrative, or whatever the case may be. There really is always a solution or a gift in every single challenge, and it's not always easy. That's not what I'm suggesting, excuse me. I am suggesting, though, that we give ourselves a little bit of space, one to feel whatever we need to feel when we're dealing with what it is we need to deal with. And another thing I will say is this Something I have recently begun to do is to ask myself what is this telling me?

Speaker 1:

I'm amazed at how often I get feedback from my brain about the situation or my emotions, whatever I'm dealing with. A lot of times, this really is a way of putting a spin on the situations and circumstances that we sometimes find ourselves in, because there's always a way if we're committed to finding it. So the first thing we want to do is give ourselves a little bit of space to feel and, you know, pontificate about whatever it is that we're facing, you know. And after we give ourselves that time, we immediately want to shift out of that. We immediately want to shift our focus to solutions. And the reason why is, again, because if we put too much focus into what the challenge is, after a while it's like we start becoming the challenge, literally, we start to own the challenge as if that's all we've ever been, if that is all we've ever known or all we are capable of.

Speaker 1:

And oftentimes, the more time and attention we give to a challenge, the more challenging it becomes. Have you ever noticed that? Isn't that funny how that works? Ever noticed that? Isn't that funny how that works? So you really want to develop and cultivate the habit of focusing more on the solutions than the challenge, and I think when you begin to do that, a that's a skill in and of itself that can yield massive dividends If we start to intentionally focus on ways to overcome the obstacles that we're facing. I think that's very empowering in and of itself, because it's almost like an internal fortitude where you have reclaimed the part of your brain or your mind that would naturally wonder into the rabbit hole, if you will, of just focusing on how bad your issue or your challenge is, or whatever it is that you're dealing with, and going into that space, allowing yourself to feel sorry for yourself, or commiserating or whatever fucked up other disempowering emotions that sometimes we will go into. And if we're not careful when we go into those spaces, if we're not careful, what will happen is we will stay in those spaces, and that's the kind of pit you don't want to stay in. You want to climb out of it immediately. You want to acknowledge it. You want to say you know what. This is, what I'm dealing with. Here's where I'm at. Okay, and even from the standpoint of get your pen and pad or your cell phone or whatever you'd like to take notes on and get some ideas out of your head onto paper or onto whatever digital device you use, to start looking at the solutions as practical, viable possibilities. Because when you get it out of your head you can see the pathway.

Speaker 1:

Now, sometimes, when you're in that pit and you're focusing too much on what your obstacle is, it can all too often become almost like a little maze, if you will, and you'll realize there are some possibilities but you won't take them. In some ways you could even say you get comfortable being in that space. And that's the danger zone, because when you get comfortable being in that space, that means you're no longer even attempting to find solutions to it. You've just settled in that space and this is where we don't want to be. And if we do find ourselves there which we all will at points in time we want to snap out of it immediately. We want to realize, hey, this is not where I'm supposed to be. I'm getting a little too comfortable here. Let me start focusing and generating some ideas and solutions and putting my focus on the solutions and how I can change this situation and take action immediately, because that's who you are, that's who I am. So start to shift your focus to solutions immediately.

Speaker 1:

The next thing you got to change your state as men. A lot of times we don't like being too emotional, but the power is in the emotions. The power is in that's where the juice is. At A lot of times in my life, when I look back, I would deny myself the ability of using the emotions that can help me change a situation or a circumstance. I wouldn't allow myself to tap into my determination, I wouldn't allow myself to tap into my courage or to tap into my will or to tap into my faith. And the reality is that's where your power is at. Your power and your point of possibilities are united to you through your emotions. So you got to tap into those emotions and what they're telling you and allow them to flow through you and, like Bruce Lee said, be like water.

Speaker 1:

So if we're like water and water can be channeled and you can channel your emotions and your energy and your focus and thought forms into the solutions, whoa, now let's think about that. If the water is dammed up, but you take the water and you allow some of the water to be filtered through and you channel it through that pressure washer. Is it not true that the water can chip away stone? Is it not true that it can remove residue? If you just apply a little bit more pressure and a little bit more pressure and a little bit more focus and a little bit more direction and a little bit more energy and effort towards the solutions, and after a while you get so focused on the solutions you become. You become the solution, you become the solutions. You start living the solutions and now you start to see yourself as someone who's always finding solutions and the problem excuse me, the challenge, that challenge you were facing, it becomes a molehill, it becomes a dwarf, because you're the giant and you're the one who's always finding solutions in your life, because you want to allow yourself to focus on obstacles. You find opportunities, you find solutions, and so that's what I'm realizing you got to really change your state. You got to put that great music on that puts you in a great state, that makes you want to go out and kick ass.

Speaker 1:

I heard the comedian Cat Williams say that you got to have your theme music. I like that. Have your fucking theme music, whatever your theme music is and I got all kinds of theme music. I got theme music for when I'm just a badass and I need to fuck some shit up. I got my theme music when I need to be upbeat. And I got the bullshit music that puts me in an unresourceful state. But I've done my best to really put that to the side. I don't really listen to a lot of that kind of music anymore because it can put me in the wrong state and what we want to do is we want to live in a beautiful state, we want to live in a resourceful state Because, at the end of the day, it's all about being resourceful anyway.

Speaker 1:

So if you tap into those emotions and you tap into the resourceful part of yourself, there's no obstacle that you can't turn into an opportunity. As a matter of fact, especially if you're an entrepreneur, you're used to doing that, that's what you do all the time anyway, and even if you're not an entrepreneur, you have to cultivate that kind of a mindset because that's a part of life anyway. If you look at the law of transmutation, that's what the law of transmutation is all about. Read, think so. The law of transmutation means that you have the ability to create mental alchemy. Mental alchemy meaning you can take a situation that's undesirable, find good in it and use it to your benefit to create the good that you do desire to have in your life, for yourself and others. That is power, my friend and you and I, we all have that power.

Speaker 1:

Oftentimes we won't use it, though, unless we're in a resourceful state, which is why I suggest you create an environment, or get into an environment, whether it's at home, at work, on your way to work, in your car, where you're listening to great music, where you're listening to great content, where you're inspired by who you're around or the environment that you've created, because that's what brings out the best in us. When we're around high standards, when we put ourselves into a peak state, when we get into a resourceful state, when we're in a low state or unresourceful state or we just focus on what's wrong, we're not going to find those answers and those solutions there. We're just going to stay right there in the same place wallowing over the bullshit. That's not going to change it, and I've done it too, and it sucks. So get into a resourceful state, change your state, put on some great music, get around some great people, change your environment, Go to a different side of town. Go have lunch or dinner with somebody on a different side of town. Go somewhere where you can get inspired, where there's more wealth, where there's more success, and get some fresh perspectives. Speaking of which that's my last point You've got to change your perspective.

Speaker 1:

Oftentimes we're looking at it from the end of the spectrum or the scope of what had occurred where it occurred. But what if you took the opposite perspective and then you took another perspective? And then you took another perspective and then you took another perspective, not from where the event or the situation is happening, but from a totally different stance? You might see some different possibilities in it. You might generate some new ideas about it, might generate some new ideas about it. You might take some different actions and by taking some different actions, you might even start to see it as an opportunity or opportunities instead of obstacles. So we want to get into the habit of looking at it from multiple perspectives, because sometimes we can just look at it from just maybe one or two perspectives.

Speaker 1:

We put these limits on ourselves and the reality is we're unlimited, but we put the limits on ourselves. So we have to remove those limits from ourselves, and sometimes that can include just sharing dialogue or conversation with someone who you respect or who you know, like and trust, and asking them what do they think about the situation. And then you may talk to someone else. It could be several people, you know. What do you think about this? Like, what would you do? You know, and be open to what they'll say. Sometimes, I know, as men, we don't want to be open to feedback. You know, we let our egos I don't want to ask anybody for shit. I've said that, right? Okay. So then you're limiting the solutions or the possibilities that you could come up with for that situation. So take off the limitations, put the ego to the side and be willing to seek out some fresh perspectives and really be open to them.

Speaker 1:

Don't allow yourself to be right at the cost of getting the results that you want. And again, sometimes we can all do this. I've done it too, and that is the very point that I'm making to you. You got to ask yourself this. There's a brilliant guy, successful businessman, t Harv Ecker. He always says you can be right or you can get results, and some of us we're at the age we should know better.

Speaker 1:

However, you got to ask yourself that Do I want to be right or do I want to get results? You got to ask yourself that Do I want to be right or do I want to get results? Ask yourself that question. If you ask yourself that question and you prefer to be right, then I wish you well, because that may come at the cost of you achieving what you really want to achieve, or having what you really want to have, or doing what you really want to do.

Speaker 1:

And that also is a part of humility, I think, because sometimes we can go for years and years and years and decades, and we can think the way that we've been doing it is the right way, even though we know it's not producing what we want, and we still won't fucking let it go. And I'm telling you there are some things that you're doing that are not producing results, and it's time to stop being right and it's time to start doing what works so you can achieve the results and outcomes that you want, because you deserve that, and so do I. So be willing to let go of what's not working, be willing to be okay with being wrong, so you can change the perspective and start producing results, which is really what you want anyway. So take some time, allow yourself to feel what you need to feel for a few moments, minutes, about whatever challenges you're facing today, and then, immediately, I want you to shift into the opportunities that those challenges are presenting to you, and then I want you to change your state, and then I want you to change your perspectives. And then I want you to change your state, and then I want you to change your perspectives, and then I want you to act on those perspectives. Some new actions will create a new you and some new possibilities, and that's how you change obstacles into opportunities, aka mental alchemy. My friends, that's all I got for you, guys today.
