Five days sounds like a long time until you’re staring at a New Brunswick moose tag and realizing the clock is already running. I’m Ken Marr, and I’m joined by my buddies Denver Lewis and Dalton P-Dog Patterson for a full breakdown of Dalton’s first-ever moose hunt, done in a brand-new northern zone where the animals are plentiful, the roads are confusing, and the rut can flip the script overnight. We talk about the real work before the hunt: figuring out access on timber company land, scouting with limited time, and why trail cameras can show “moose all summer” then deliver nothing once bulls start roaming.
Then we get into the fun part: the sounds and decisions that make moose hunting addictive. You’ll hear how a cow call can spark an instant response, what tree knocking actually sounds like in person, and why moose move through thick cover like a “truck without an engine.” We also share the little moments that shape a trip, including an opening-morning stealth mission that goes sideways fast, plus an encounter with other hunters who try to put the guys on a truly big bull.

From stories to how-tos, you'll find it here. Welcome to the podcast. Alright, yes. Hey guys and gals, thanks for listening. Another week, another podcast, and we're gonna do the first moose one of this year. So moose season in a lot of areas is just around the corner, and it's probably on a lot of your guys' and gals' minds. And you know what? If it's not, it's kind of interesting. If you're not in an area where there are moose, it's always, I think, cool to listen to hunting stories and stuff about animals that you just don't know about and maybe haven't hunted, but will someday are plan on it. So this is a moose hunting story, good friends, Denver and Dalton. If you're looking at the podcast profile picture, touching the antlers on the left is Denver, on the right is Dalton. Meet Denver And Dalton
SPEAKER_01Denver and Dalton, the double Ds. I'm happy to have you guys out here on the podcast. Denver, it's been a little while. Dalton, so last year, if some people remember, uh, around this time, I think, we we went over the pre-hunt. We found out they'd won the moose lottery, they're going moose hunting. Coincidentally enough, a year from now, uh, a year from last year, you were you got drawn again to go moose hunting, which is crazy. Uh, because there's some people that don't get drawn for 16 plus years. You got it two years in a row. That's how the lottery system works here in New Brunswick. There's just that's how it is. So you get you put in some people that have listened to this podcast before, they've heard me say this, but those that are new to it, you put in for the wildlife management zone that you want, and then you might get drawn two years in a row, you might not get drawn for 16 plus. So um, so we're here, we're joined by Denver Lewis, and we're gonna be talking about your guys' moose hunt last year because you guys had a great hunt. Dalton, you went into it with zero moose experience. Denver, I want to talk a little bit about you've got some successful moose hunts under your belt now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there's a couple.
SPEAKER_01There's a few. How many have you been on? You're still young, and how many have you been on successfully? Six. Six successful moose hunts. And before that, you're in wildlife management areas before last year that the moose numbers they they weren't really high. It was concentrated areas, and the amount of people there was large. And also in New Brunswick here, it used to be three, but we only have a five-day season. So there's there's no dicking around. Well, there shouldn't be, depending on who you go with. Um so uh, you know, you guys really had uh you got your work cut out for you. But this year, you guys were in a new or last year, sorry, you guys were in a new zone. Northern New Brunswick, the moose are ample there. Denver, you went down there this spring with your brother and dad and cousin uh shed hunting. How many did you guys find?
SPEAKER_02Nineteen. Nineteen just over a day.
SPEAKER_01And just over a day, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so all within a kilometer of where we were camping to, like really just picked a spot.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02Kilometer circumference right around it, nineteen sheds. And only only two sheds were were a match set.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah? Your headphones are on backwards, I think. Um yeah, they definitely are. You're good now. Uh so you guys are in definitely a moosey area, but but so Denver, you've got experience, Dalton, you didn't, but regardless, you guys went to a zone last year in northern New Brunswick that's completely new territory for you guys.
New Zone Scouting And Trail Cameras
SPEAKER_01From us here where we live, it's what about five, six-hour drive one way. Um, so you guys only went up once previous to the season, then you guys got up there a little bit earlier in the season to scout.
SPEAKER_03Uh let's so when we went up there for starters, like we had no idea where we were going. Uh, we had done all this off a map, and me and Brad and Denver and and Patrick had made probably 45 phone calls each way. Well discussing and and coming up with ideas, and we took a tip from somebody and kind of went with that. And uh anyway, we went up there, it was probably 46 degrees Celsius in the shade up there. We were there, so we and by the time we got up there and we had to go home, like we put out two cameras and some attractant, I believe. Yeah, uh cell cameras wouldn't transmit. I was gonna ask them the cell cameras. Oh, no. Okay. Um, so we went up there and pulled the cards, and we never we didn't have anything bigger than uh probably a year and a half to your or two and a half year old bowl. Nothing crazy, like nothing, nothing that was even kind of the minimum standard. Like we had kind of said like we were we wanted to get probably a 40-inch bowl.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, with the exception of the last AI.
SPEAKER_01Which up there, it's doable. It's definitely doable.
SPEAKER_03Well, it obviously is, yeah. No, some areas you just take what you can get. It was crazy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's it's insanity.
SPEAKER_01And then just to backtrack, I guess, slightly a little bit. So I want to give a good shout out to uh somebody that Denver and I've got a few times, great guy, Brad Trayer, who Dalton uh we set up with you, he knew the area a little bit and helped you guys kind of get your base.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he gave us a starting point, right? Which is really what we need because you look at something on a map from five or six hours away, and it's all trees and dirt roads.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. And then you also so you recruited Denver because Denver does have a fair amount of moose hunting experience for his age, especially under his belt. And Denver's dad, Brad. So you're gonna hear that name come up, Brad.
SPEAKER_03Brad was my second gun.
SPEAKER_01Brad is so yes, in New Brunswick, the other person, the person that gets drawn, they can choose a second gun. That second gun pays the fee. They've got to be within hearing and eyesight distance from you without using binoculars or walkie-talkies or anything like that. And then uh, friend Pat, he was the one that wanted you to apply up there, so he came along to he's the one that convinced me to to apply for for zone.
SPEAKER_03I'm not telling you what zone. So he's the one that convinced me to apply. Yeah, and uh to just a little context. So Pat wanted to go too, so we the four of us went up. And I I would argue that we learned a lot in a day or two of actually being going up and putting cameras up. We we we weren't really that much further ahead by doing that, quite honestly.
SPEAKER_01Do you find Denver? You've done lots of moose hunting in some difficult areas. Did it's not like dear, did did trail cameras make a difference? Are they just moving too much? Because we we hit them here, our seasons right in the rut. Yeah, so are they staying? Do they do you rely on them at all? It's fun to get pictures.
SPEAKER_02One year in one of the local zones here, we had probably nine, ten different bulls all summer long and sat there for three days of the season. Not one.
SPEAKER_01It's just because the rut, right? They're moving too much? Yeah. It's fun to get pictures. I mean, it's like I came.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and we just wanted to it I'd I'd say the the motivation really for that trip was just to lay eyes on it, right? When you say Denver, just to get get an idea of what we're actually looking at before we go up there and camp there for a week, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. So then you guys ended up so tell me the area. Well, you guys go up, it it you book a it's gated, it's gated land. But it's it's a timber company. So it's this giant, giant track of land that the timber company owns. Say that. And you guys get a campsite, and but it's remote. You guys aren't staying in a hotel or anything like that. Allegedly. Yes, allegedly. Um, so tell me, I mean, let's what were you guys well after when opening the night before opening day, what were you guys' thoughts? What
Night Before Opener And Expectations
SPEAKER_01was the plan? What were you what was going through your head? Well Dalton's just trying to remember what a moose looks like.
SPEAKER_03I'll start, and then Denver could give his thoughts. But my thoughts were, oh my goodness. We heard uh we were the night before just sitting and uh on an adventure there, and and we had heard a bull crashing through the woods, and that that was the first time I'd ever even heard that in person. Um so I was I didn't I don't even think I slept. But Denver?
SPEAKER_02What was it Saturday? It was Saturday morning, no Sunday morning we went out. That's right.
SPEAKER_03Well we get up no Monday morning. Wasn't it? Did we go up Saturday? Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_02So Monday morning we went out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we seen But the season started on two's day. Okay.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02What was it six in that one first clear cut? Two in the first clear cut. Drove about a kilometer down, one other small little clear cut, seen six more there. So it was a good morning. We knew we were going in that general direction. Wanted to focus on that general direction. And then uh Monday morning, me, Dalton, and Pat went out the road, ended up seeing three bulls. Dad went on a little bit of a loan mission back towards where we were Sunday morning, and he had three big decent bull, 45 inch bowl experiences, had them all on video.
SPEAKER_01Wow, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So we knew where that little valley was, we were gonna focus in it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So Dalton, this being your first boost hunt, but knowing that the area held loose, did you have you had pretty good expectations, right? Well, you said 40 inch bowl. It's kind of what you're looking at.
SPEAKER_03That's what we were gonna start our expectations at. I mean, dropped if we go ahead.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, yeah, you start seeing that some decent bulls around there, like, you know what, boys, 60. 60 or nothing.
SPEAKER_03We're breaking records, yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03No, that was kind of my expectation. I mean, I didn't think that was unreasonable either. Given the weather that we had too, because we had some really good weather.
SPEAKER_02Couldn't ask for better.
SPEAKER_01It was cooler up there, right?
SPEAKER_02A little bit of rain. Oh my goodness, yeah. The leaves were the first night.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But that morning everything was dripping off and yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because normally our moose season here in New Brunswick, it falls during our hurricane season. So it's normally quite hot or like just torrential rain. So you guys got lucky up there, yeah. Yeah. Um so then the night before you guys had the game plan and then uh headed off and don't leave anything out.
Opening Morning Jitters And The Horn
SPEAKER_03Go ahead, Denver. Start us off revolting.
SPEAKER_01You woke up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we woke up and uh we narrowed it down the the spot where we seen all the moose the day before we figured it was probably gonna be a lot of driving, people driving back and forth. So the people that weren't picky, they were gonna go out and shoot their their moose and hopefully be out of there. So we went to a different spot. We got in there probably half hour before daylight. We're being all stealthy and whatnot, and out to put the stock in and go in. And I don't know, you were reaching a Dalton's reaching across.
SPEAKER_03I was reaching to grab the keys out of the ignition and I reached through the steering wheel with my arm.
SPEAKER_01Stealthily though.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, of course, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Quietest morning you ever heard, and just lays on the horn like just to let the moose know we were here and we were coming for them.
SPEAKER_01Fair warning. Dalton's Dalton's unloaded and ready to go, or loaded, I mean.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. So we went for a little little walk and found ourselves up in a sugar woods, big maple stand.
SPEAKER_03Had a coyote run right up to us. Yeah. Oh yeah?
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, like twenty yards maybe. Really? Sat there just looking right dead at us.
SPEAKER_03We saw a cow and a calf moving along. Yeah. But we didn't we didn't have the success we were hoping in there. No. Um but anyway, that was kind of the first morning. Right? I'm trying to think. Yeah, that was a big, that was a big jaunt. That was a big walk.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we've seen moose, so it was a bonus. You're on the right track, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So then uh what was the so you guys just the first day was walking. You did see some moose, but no bullshit. No bullshit. No big no bulls at all. No. Yeah. So then that night at camp was it a little more somber? You guys are like, no, it's the first day. Just stay positive.
SPEAKER_03I'd argue yes and no, because I mean everybody was actually, I think, tired because we didn't really sleep at all.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah, and I I I'm trying to think of the first night what even happened. I know what happened the second night, but I don't remember what happened.
SPEAKER_02We went back over to that hill. The same spot we went the morning. It went up on that peak a little bit. Oh, yeah, that's right. We just kind of watched that road. That's right.
SPEAKER_01Now, were you guys calling much Denver? You're not too bad of a caller. Were you guys calling and walking most of that first day? Yeah. Yeah. And nothing called. No. And did you guys hear any other hunters?
SPEAKER_02Uh never heard a shot. That's good. Okay. That's that's what it was gonna be like a whole war, but not a shot.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, where we were, there was nobody. Oh, not a soul.
SPEAKER_01That's good, that helps.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's so nice. Um, so the really nothing to report on there. The the second morning was when it really changed. Um we I I I'm gonna say we could have shot the bull that we shot the second morning, but people on the road kind of people now.
SPEAKER_01When did Dalton happen to make a run into town to get the Michelin man suit? Uh Dalton, you underestimated the weather. Oh, did I ever? Big time. So you thought it'd be way hotter. Big time. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then well, I guess the first yeah, the first morning we were walking in, and Pat had these splash pants on, and they were like really loud. Like he he took we made it a hundred yards from the truck, and I was already thinking it, but I didn't want to be the one. Just pants them right there. And Dalton, yeah. He's like, Pat, I don't I don't want to be this guy, but those pants gotta fucking go. It's like there's no way.
SPEAKER_03Like it was like it was like when you're with your kid and he's got the little thing.
SPEAKER_02It I don't know. It just sounded like somebody taking a garbage paper garbage bag and shaking.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Like, oh, it was bad. So the the second morning, Denver, you should start with that because I don't I don't remember how that all started. I remember how it ended and what happened.
SPEAKER_02At noon the first morning, I found this little So up until then though, it was quiet.
Cow Calls And A Bull Goes Wild
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I found this little porter trailer just out for a scout and it kind of looped around this little plantation into the back of this clear cut that was where we seen the most the day before the season. So we snuck around the back side of the woods so anybody driving the road could do their thing. Wasn't gonna interfere with us, so we thought. And we came up on the mound at first light, and that's when we seen what we think's the bowl we shot, and it took off down into the the bog-ish spot.
SPEAKER_03So we as soon as bikes come up the road is what it wasn't quiet the second morning.
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, they spooked it. Yeah. So yeah, we went we went after it and we got down into the probably I'd say it was what ten-year-old clear cut, the back of it, bottom of it. And we just started cow calling a little bit, had a cow answer us pretty much instantly. And within two or three minutes after, we just heard a great big tree knock from probably three, four hundred yards up from us. I've never heard one before. Explain that a little. It just like you had a baseball bat, as hard as you can right across the maple tree, just that would be the bowl rake not raking, but smashing trees. I've heard of it, I've never heard of it in person.
SPEAKER_01Must hit it some hard then.
SPEAKER_02Smash like just echoed, smashed it. And then right after that he started grunting, raking.
SPEAKER_01So he was fired up.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, he was fired up. We had the cow. We ended up getting a glimpse of the cow. She was just beside us. Kinda we we were basically in between the cow and the bull. So we were thinking it was a perfect spot to be. Yeah. He was working his way towards us, and then he just kind of stopped. And we didn't know if he was still in front of us. It was real thick. And after that we could hear something walking around us, and I could still see something ahead of us, thinking that was that was the bull. And then we j it just sounded like a like a truck running through the without an edge. Yeah, I remember hearing that when I was just smashing everything, laying everything down, like a four-wheeler flying through the city. Yeah, like young starting with chat.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, just it was unreal. I've never heard that much noise come from something. Like it's an overwhelming amount of noise.
SPEAKER_01Well, I remember being told about it when we went on, I went on my moose with my uncle, and then I was telling him I was he his hearing's not that great, and I was like, I hear something coming through. It's a sense sounds like a four-wheeler without an engine. He's like, that's it. And it I've heard that, and they do, like they really do. It's he came through just snorting and snotting going, it's like, man, that's cool. Yeah, it was wild. Like, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So he uh he ran around, he met up with that cow. I could still see the moose that I was looking at, but kind of find out it was it was that cow's calf. It was just standing there, like it came basically right up to us. Like you could tell it it just left its mother, like hasn't been alone for very long.
SPEAKER_03There was still milk on its lips. Oh, yeah. He didn't know what to do, it just looked at us like what do I do?
SPEAKER_01Look like Denver's twin brother.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, just walked up on it, just jokingly. Um, anyway, I I think that's pretty near all for the second morning, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he we lost track of that one and couldn't get him to come back out.
SPEAKER_01And then you guys did run into some hunters the second day a little bit second afternoon.
Helpful Hunters And Camp Confidence
SPEAKER_02That was right after that. We walked back on the road, we were talking to them. They already tagged out.
SPEAKER_03We forgot about that, yeah.
SPEAKER_02They were tagged out with an 18 point the first mornings, they were just out touring around shit with them, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Those guys were there for a good time. I hope to see them again.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah. They turned around, started heading the direction we were walking, they might have made it 150 yards ahead of us. We could still see the the taillights. Yeah. And when we seen one guy jump out, the reverse lights come on, they were flooring it back to us, waving us, telling us to get in the box. They just seen a monster jump in the box, yeah. Went up. Buddy couldn't get it to come back out, so we went in after it. Yeah, we never heard it again. It was on a mission. That's nice of them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, they were good guys. Really good guys. Should it if they're listening? Yeah, they were really good. Yeah, they might. I don't know any of their names, but The guys that had all the music. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, that that night we went up on the top of the hill from where we heard that that big bull. We figured he might still be in the area.
SPEAKER_03We did have other people calling back to us. Remember that? Yeah. In the morning. Yeah, we did. We figured it was people calling.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. How come? How'd you know it's people?
SPEAKER_03It's just you could tell.
SPEAKER_01I've heard turkeys where it's like, man, that's definitely a person. Like, no, it was a shitty head.
SPEAKER_02No, these are people. You could hear the truck door up and get all shut.
SPEAKER_01You can hear them coughing in between calls and stuff. Yeah. So that was the second morning. So how was uh how was Morel at camp that night? Like, were you guys like, you know what? I think we're on to something. We were pumped up.
SPEAKER_03Well, I remember just sitting there and saying, We're seeing moose, it's gonna happen, right? Oh, yeah. Like it, like we kind of nobody was really down because it was like we came within inch. Like I had that moose in my scope running away that morning, right? Like we were close. Yeah, we just didn't quite, it was just the extra inch we were missing. So Morel was really good.
SPEAKER_01Like it never got never got plus Denver. Your dad's a good cook, Brad, and he likes he likes cooking too. So like that that helps with Morel, you know? Yeah, that's gonna help. That's gonna help everyone in a good mood and they got their bellies full of good food, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. No, Morel was real high. Okay. I ended up finding a uh a monster moose shed when we were up there.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I lugged that around for two days with using that as a rake. Thought it was gonna bring us some luck. Thought it'd be cool, you know. Maybe that was some rake that we could be able to shoot that bull raking it in with his own antler from the year before.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, yeah. Yeah. I don't think it was the bring him to his death with his own antler.
SPEAKER_02Maybe this year we'll we'll be able to catch up with him, but yeah. I just thought that'd be cool.
SPEAKER_01Imagine, yeah, bring him to his death with his own antler from the year before.

SPEAKER_01More like tree harvesting. Yeah. Um, all right, so you guys were like, you know what? We're all good, food's great, company's, you know, getting there and third morning.
Day Three Plan Works Perfectly
SPEAKER_03So, well, we'll go back, we'll go back the night before because I'd just like to say that if we could do this again in any sort of hunting, we'd be geniuses. But we put a plan together. Um, the four of us, and we're gonna shoot a moose.
SPEAKER_01Good plan.
SPEAKER_03No, we called it exactly how we were gonna do it. Um, we we decided we were gonna go in and and basically we figured that there'd been moose in this clear cut every morning that we were there, whether they were in the front, the back, whatever. So we were like, okay, that bull was there yesterday. There's a chance that we're gonna get to him and we're gonna beat the every the road rush in, right? So we basically we snuck around, uh, probably started 45 minutes. It was dark, dark, no flashlight, no, just like walking through Skidder Rush the way around, yeah. Um, and we we got to exactly where we were the morning before, and uh sure shit. It went exactly to the plan that we made.
SPEAKER_02Like it was dark. Like we had the binos up, and you could like you thought your eyes were playing tricks on you're like, I'm pretty sure there's three moose out there. It's like 50 moose. They got lighter, and there was there was definitely moose out there.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_02There was a few.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So yeah, we it went exactly to plan, and we uh we were basically just waiting for shooting time. And we were able to then I mean it's on video, Denver was able to get it, get it on video, and uh was able to make a a good shot the first time and folded them.
SPEAKER_01Because Brad didn't need to shoot, did he? Nope. I was trying to think, I did see the video.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was 300 yards.
SPEAKER_01Well he so 300 yards. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So what were you using for 270 WSM?
SPEAKER_01Nice.
SPEAKER_03And I made my shot just in the the lower neck.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_03And uh he folded out of sleep. Um my inexperience versus Brad's experience. So I shot and I was panicking because I couldn't see him, right? And in that moment, you're you're not your brain's not working, but I would have known anyway, honestly. So my inexperience, I'm like, fuck, like I don't know where he is. Brad's like, well, he's not gonna fucking run away that fast. He's a fucking moose. Like, what do you think?
SPEAKER_02You shot and you couldn't see him?
SPEAKER_03No, he was gone. He just dropped out of sight.
SPEAKER_02He dropped even on the camera. I couldn't even tell. I was like, Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03I took the legs it from underneath him.
SPEAKER_02And I knew it so I knew it didn't run off because the the calves calf was still just they didn't even know what happened.
SPEAKER_03They were getting there in there, and Brad, yeah, and Brad's like, Dalton, like the fucking thing's not gonna run away, man. Like, what are you doing?
SPEAKER_01It was Dalton. Dalton was about here, like you're about to level 10.
SPEAKER_03Dalton was at 11.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And Brad's probably ran a five. He's excited, but he's not, you know, get a contact. He's an eight.
SPEAKER_02He was excited, he was holding back a little. He won't back until he lays eyes on it, and then he was and that's a good way to be.
SPEAKER_01That's the experience coming in, right? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, so once once Brad said that and we got watching the video back, it was you never want to be 100% because that's not you don't know.
SPEAKER_01You guys watched the video before you went to the moose? Okay.
SPEAKER_02It wasn't real clear. I mean, it's not a great top-of-the-line camera either. Like you could tell, you could just see the black down at a site. We had a pretty good idea. The cows, yeah, they never went nowhere, they just stood there, yeah, yeah, wandered around. They they wandered off when we started walking up, so we knew they weren't too scared. Like if a bull was running, it pretty much clears the clear cut rate out.
SPEAKER_01It would, yeah. Yeah. So then uh so then you guys watch video back and you're like, so this this was the third morning, right? Yeah, yeah. Um and then so you guys watch video back, you're like, that looks looks like it's dead. It's gotta be.
SPEAKER_03So then you guys don't have the legs come right in from underneath them, it was awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, really.
SPEAKER_02Shit weather coming in for Friday.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you guys come. Yeah. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then uh, yeah, so you guys walked up or ran up to it.
SPEAKER_03No, it walked, it was through a clear cut that was had some green growth coming up through it. It was Sib slogan.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So you guys got up and like what was the uh walk-up like, boys?
SPEAKER_02Well, it was it was pretty quiet for a bit, and then I think Dalton just broke the ice and everybody started high-fi. Wow, it worked. Oh, it was it we were taking it in for sure. Yeah, it was pretty cool. Yeah, it was awesome. We were all in shot. Like our plan right to a T, like absolutely everything. It worked just exactly how we planned it the night before.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. But I mean, walking up to him, it being your first moose on two Dalton's. And it wasn't they're big, they're a big animals, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But it was in that clear cut, and it wasn't like that clear cut was like real short or you could see through it. Like you had to get right up to him to be even be able to see his antlers just sitting there. Yeah. Um, so we were still a little weary, and and you know how stuff changes when you're looking at it from a distance to when you're actually standing beside it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's closer.
SPEAKER_03Because well, it's it's so different. Like he was he wasn't where we thought he was.
SPEAKER_02I couldn't hit the ground, it's honestly that clear cut was just as flat. Not at all. We got walking, there's hills in it, high spots, low spots.
SPEAKER_01He wasn't where you guys thought he fell.
SPEAKER_03We went because we thought he was kind of up on a knoll, but he was actually behind it a little bit, and we didn't get pretty close to him to see him.
SPEAKER_01Huh? Yeah, I'd freak you out then coming up where you thought he went down, he's not there. And you're like, Man, he snuck off. He crawled through here.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, and you're you're replaying like Meat Eater when the moose goes at him, and you're like, Oh yeah, I'm gonna have this gun ready to go. Yeah, yeah, that's right, Steve Nelly's.
SPEAKER_01I am a meat eater, like in the commercial part, there's like this moose charging at him.
SPEAKER_03So I'm picturing that being me without a camera. I think you actually did have a camera on. I had a camera on. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01If I'm gonna be attacked by an animal, I damn sure want it on video, right?
SPEAKER_03Give my kid something. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, so he went out screaming like a little girl. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Why was he crying?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Anyway, anyway, that was a part too. So we got him gutted and everything, and uh Yeah, well, how'd you guys get him out?
Sled Recovery And Cooling The Meat
SPEAKER_02Because that's always that's it was the slickest recovery I have ever done.
SPEAKER_01Really?
SPEAKER_02Absolutely, 100%. So how you guys gutted him and then we brought the sled out with the oh the big game sled? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, Brad's bike and we threw him on there and it probably 400 yards from the road. Yeah. We went straight out to the road right on right on the truck.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. It was it was slick. Like it didn't take.
SPEAKER_01Did he have a side by side then? Yeah. It made it through that. Oh yeah, that's a joke. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03He was on a harvester trail, right? Oh or porter trail, I guess. Like it was uh it was just the strip, so he just followed a strip in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Was it now our friend Darren Matthews makes was it one of the ones that he made, the big game sled? Yeah, yeah, those are those are slick, because this year going hunting, I bought one from him, and my buddy Cody that I'm going with, Cody's like, Well, I can get the a truck bed liner. It's like while that works, and it does if you need to, these big game sleds that he makes, they roll up. You can put them right on the back rack of the four-wheeler or whatever. Like they, I mean, whirled a difference. Was that your first time using one, Denver? Because you've been on a few moose recoveries.
SPEAKER_02Uh no, I used one the year before. I used one for Lane's bear too.
SPEAKER_01So, how big of a difference does it make instead of you're just dragging this animal through the woods or clear cut whatever you put it on this sled and it slides it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it goes right over some. It's kind of it's not completely flat, it's kind of rounded at the nose. Yeah. There's no real lip to it. Like it just nothing to catch. It just goes right over anything.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, what a what a difference. Yeah. So then you guys got that out and then high fives and everything. You got did you guys start packing up that day to head home?
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, we went home that day. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I guess you had to get to the butcher.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I had to get back to Sussex.
SPEAKER_01Now, wasn't it Denver ended up taking the moose and Dalton didn't? And it was a good thing he did, because you got a flat on the camper trailer. I did. Coming home, didn't you? You did. So it's a good thing the moose went to Denver. Yeah. Because it was getting a bit warm that day.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I pulled over. I had a shake and pulled over, and I was like, I don't I don't see anything. And then I got I don't think I got a kilometer down the road and there's rubber flying it from underneath the fucking trailer.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's probably not mine. Just keep going. We had uh I think we had six two-liter pot bottles frozen with water inside. Six? Yeah. Before the hunt. Just and that's a good idea. And we filled the chest cavity right up, right up with it. And I got out to a store, I got four more bags of ice, packed it even, packed some more into it. And I think it was it was around 13 hours from the time we shot it until the time I got the butcher and the butcher how cold that meat was. He said, Yeah. He he asked me, he's like, When did you guys shoot this? I said, about 13 hours ago. He said that meat was. It was 7 30 night for it. The bottles were still 80% frozen. There was still ice in the bag.
SPEAKER_01Because I remember that day. It was it was warming up a bit, you know.
SPEAKER_03Well, and it warmed up a lot too from there to here. Like watching the temperature in the on the dash of the truck, it warmed up a lot.
SPEAKER_01From northern New Brunswick to what do we southeast to the leaves, yeah.
SPEAKER_03The leaves were turned up there and they were still so green down here.
SPEAKER_01Um but the the water bottle trick worked.
SPEAKER_03There's a little pro tip for people the whole thing of pepper.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've heard that. What's the what's the pepper thing again? I've heard it. Dose the whole thing for flies.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. And it's already you're gonna eat it anyway with pepper, so yeah, why not?
SPEAKER_01Marinate.
SPEAKER_03Marinating.
SPEAKER_01That's right.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it does work for flies.
SPEAKER_01What did I used to do at the butcher shop when I worked there as a kid for the hides? Salt them, I think, to get the flies off. I think that's why I did salted them. Maybe yeah. Yeah, that's what it is.
SPEAKER_03So, Denver, question.
Gear Checks And Calling Strategy
SPEAKER_03You've hunted moose down here near home. Uh, you've hunted in zone eighteen, zone twenty-two. So that'd be sense versus eastern New Brunswick. Right, versus up north. What would you say are the biggest differences and what did you not see coming?
SPEAKER_02Uh the biggest difference is the moose population itself. Like there's so much more vocal up there. Like it's like if you see like a smaller, medium-sized bull here, you're shooting it. Yeah. First, can't be chosen. Like you can almost be more picky up north you go with, yeah, up north for sure, 100%.
SPEAKER_01It's just more moose habitat. They don't not great deer hunting. Actually, a lot of those places are close to deer, but they had never seen a person either.
SPEAKER_03No, no, they were super weird. They didn't know what to do. No, they didn't act like a beer.
SPEAKER_01You were one of the first people they saw. Yeah, exactly. Those poor things.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. They think we're all pretty ugly. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, so and then it it's not as wet up north though, is it, where you guys were hunting? Like here where we hunt them, we hunt them in some clear-cut stuff, but it's bogs. Yeah. Right? It's a lot of bogs. You're gonna get wet.
SPEAKER_03It we were kind of in like a mountain valley, I guess. Like there was wet, but there there wasn't a lot of it.
SPEAKER_02Like, no, like there was some steep country where you're just looking at it, you're like, there's no way a moose will go up that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, your brother, he was hunting up there last year too, and he wore like hiking boots. And like where we're hunting moose in this area this year, I'll damn sure we'll be wearing rubber boots over hikers because it's gonna be wet.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but last year was a dry year too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was, yeah. We had a drought here, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But like there was one spot right off where we shot that moose, actually, where you could tell, like, when there was a porter in there, it was muddy, but it was hard as a rock. Like, we were just walking on top of the dried up mud. Like it was, it was it was so flat because it was liquid. Yeah, when it was right, we just walked on top of it. Yeah, so you could tell there's definitely some wet spots up there, but I'd say by and large, it's pretty rocky and yeah, hilly and stuff. Yeah, very hilly. A lot of hardwoods drops. Well, I was gonna ask that one more hardwood. A lot of hardwoods drops down into softwoods, and it's a pretty hard transition, too. So that's interesting. Like, I know one of our buddies is hunting in a different zone that's not really like that. Like, even their lower swats are pretty full of hardwoods.
SPEAKER_01Well, here we'll be hunting is a lot like uh like tamarack trees and stuff like that, right? In the wet spot and this area here, but yeah. Um, so Denver, yeah, you've been on a lot of moose hunts. What's a couple do you have any like pro tips or anything for anybody going forward? I mean, besides the obvious knowing knowing your your gun. I mean, how many people do we know probably don't sight in their gun before they go, right? They're just like, well, it was hitting last year for deer season, should be good this year.
SPEAKER_02Been banged around three or four times. Yeah. Yeah, she should be good to go.
SPEAKER_01Well, who was I talking to? Somebody did bang their gun during moose season.
SPEAKER_03Oh, me, I dropped it. Okay, it's Dalton. Broke the cap off scope.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, to make sure it was ready to go again. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I didn't because I couldn't.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Well.
SPEAKER_03This happened the second night and I shot on the third morning. But it worked.
SPEAKER_01It worked. Luckily. Well, was it Denver? You know somebody is during deer season. We won't say their name because I don't think Lane would like this, but uh we it was this was a few years ago, and uh the reticle on his scope was like off, and you're like, he's like, Oh, that's weird. And then was it was it was it him?
SPEAKER_02And then so your your cousin or whatever turned it and he's like, Yeah, he put the gun up to his shoulder and he said, Man, your reticle is like completely off. He's like, Oh no, it's it's straight. We're like, No, it's not. He's like, It is for me. My cousin just grabs a scope and he turned her a full 360 in the ring in the rings, like but just just something to bear in mind, right?
SPEAKER_01Because you don't think about that. You know, you don't think about it. Uh he's a bow guy now, so there's not to worry about that. But um, yeah, just things like that to just over double check your equipment. Dalton, you and I were talking about this before the podcast, and you know, we talk about like waterfowl loads, shotgun shells, and I don't think they matter as much. What I buy whatever's cheap, as long as it's steel, because that's what you have to use. But I mean, if you're hitting a duck, you're getting it.
SPEAKER_03Copper is officially legal, by the way. Is it the US government? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Really?
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah, they had a lawsuit on it, and I believe Boss won.

SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. They're going boss shot shells is going through a little bit of uh some problems right now within the company. They had a fire and then this and that. Anyways, it's a whole other topic. But um Yeah, we can move on. Yeah, so we're you know, we're talking about with that, I just you know, if you're hitting a duck or goose properly, they're going down. But with big game, I mean I really do find that pro your ammunition makes a different massive difference. Yes. Just massive, you know, just really not just buying the cheap stuff for that, buying what really works, you know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and if you start living by the motto that the scope should cost as much, if not more, as a gun, I think that makes a huge difference. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't live by that, but I'm I'm not against it.
SPEAKER_03I I think it makes a world of difference.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I know because you get fog and rain and things like that, you know.
SPEAKER_02As long as you're confident in in what's in your hands, like yeah, yeah. You can't go to the woods not being confident what you're dealing with, right?
SPEAKER_03No, and if you just shot that gun last week at a range, you're a lot more confident, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, in a vice.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. Or if not, whatever. Yeah. Yeah. If you're shooting the friggin' thing, you're but yeah, there's a lot of guys that I think quite honestly take their gun out of the sea out of the safe to go deer hunting tomorrow, right? And they don't, it's been sitting there all winter. They might clean it, they might not, you know, let alone shoot it.
SPEAKER_01That's why they say I've I've talked, I've had a lot of outfitters on this podcast, and they've all said the same thing that they actually find they have less wounded animals with bow hunters normally, because the bow hunters they do practice more and they do wait for that perfect shot. Yeah. Whereas, you know, not all, but a lot of the rifle guys just a rifle, it's gonna hit it, it's gonna aim and shoot. Yeah um it it varies, but I mean you obviously get misses you get wounded animals with bows. I've done it, I've done it, but um yeah. But what's the other thing, Denver too, is just having the proper gear to be able to get stuff out and realizing that it's a big animal, you've got to cool it quick.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I like the ice trick.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, that is good. Just having some.
SPEAKER_02You don't want to find yourself in a jam and have that thing and spoil that's a pepper.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, well, you hear about that some years too, where guys it's so hot in our area here during moose season, and it gets down, they didn't think about where they were shooting it, and you do hear about it happening every year, they lose the meat. They just can't get it out in time. I mean, that's a killer because everyone loves moose meat. That's a lot of meat too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, just gotta be prepared for the hunt. Um we're lucky enough, Dad takes it pretty serious. He does, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, you know. A lot of experience.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's packing all summer and yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's thorough.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, he is.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, and I would say like as a guy that hasn't really done it much, but like I've hunted lots of other stuff, but it's it's new. Um apply for the tag and find somebody that the like a Brad that knows what they're doing. That can really help you. Yeah, and you'll be fine, you figure it out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, and just like you said, we're just having the proper gear. I mean, uh I having a good you need a pickup truck, a trailer, quads, side by side, either or you know, your dad. What did he have that year? He helped us, he had um well, come-alongs are handy, but um like a block.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he had snatch blocks, snatch blocks.
SPEAKER_01That that can make a big difference right there, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, as long as you have an anchor point, you can use another bike tree. And it cuts it down by half, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_03The polling depends on yeah, how yeah, yeah, how you go up to four to one, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So I mean things like that, a chainsaw and stuff, and then yeah. Denver, do you find you do a lot of hand calling? Do you find do you like hand calling? Do you ever get you see those guys making those giant birch bark uh moose calls? Uh how do you Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It yeah, it all depends. Like sometimes you can get more raspy with your hands. Like you can sometimes reach out a lot farther. It all depends where you're calling from. If you're on a hill, you know, if you want to get right down to that valley, yeah. Maybe use a use a big call, like not just a piece of birch bark. But if you're in close in the woods, getting answers, you're not trying to reach out four hundred yards, you know it's within two hundred, then you can't go wrong with your hands.
SPEAKER_01Now what are you doing a lot more if you're doing cow calls or bowl calls?
SPEAKER_02I mean what it's all the scenario you want to paint.
SPEAKER_01If So if you're going out, you're not hearing anything, you don't know if anything's around, what's your go-to call?
SPEAKER_02Start off with a cow.
SPEAKER_01Start off with a cow and see if you get a bull that answers. Yeah. Yeah. You get a bull that answers then while you're sticking with the cow.
SPEAKER_02Now I'd switch it over.
SPEAKER_01And let him know that there's another bull interested so that he comes in quicker. Yeah. Okay. That's your go-to. Now, do you ever start with a bull?
SPEAKER_02Um The only way I would start with a bull is if I knew there was a bull in that area. If I went there the night before, seeing him, I would go in there at first light and either start snapping branches, trees, making a a scene, tree knocking, start with a couple of grunts. And if he's in that area, he's gonna let himself be known like pretty quick. So that's I would only start with that if I knew he was in there, wanted to see whereabouts he was, get him to answer. That's when I would start with that.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah. And then you know, I was talking to your brother about this lane uh last week about he was talking this time, he had some friends of ours out, and you know, people like with deer hunting stuff, you're sneaking through and everything, but with moose, he was telling them he's like, don't sound like a herd of buffalo, but like you can when we're walking through the woods, you can snap a branch, yeah. You can you can make some noise. Like we're we're trying to sound like moose.
SPEAKER_02You don't have to be uber stealthy. They're not yeah, they're not moving out because there's a there's a branch. It's not like they're if they're stepping on it, it's it's breaking. Yeah, they're not quiet animals at all.
SPEAKER_03That that's they don't move around like a bear.
SPEAKER_01No, no, god no, not like a bear.
SPEAKER_02No, like you could have drove your truck through that that woods the same as that moose was doing for us. Like, yeah, there's nothing quiet about them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, so that I mean that's another thing to keep in mind, because yeah, but like you said, he's telling them that, like, you know, it's it's alright, you know, just walk.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Normal. Don't be shouting and stuff, but I that's probably some things that people underestimate too when hunting moose, because they're thinking like deer, bear, you know, quiet, stealthy, and and stuff, but you don't have to be. Really, if you're hunting them more during the ride. Like, so we're lucky here that our season does fall during the ride, so they're very receptive to calls and they're usually they're fairly fired out, the bulls are. You know, so yeah. Um did you guys see any other hunters on your way out or anything?
SPEAKER_02Or yeah, we've seen I think there was ten all camping within our our sites, and we were the second second last group to tag out the third morning, and the last group that still hadn't tagged out as we were pulling out, they were pulling in with their bikes, and they said they got one down. So yeah. Yeah, all the sites were empty come the third night.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02Everybody tagged out, it was pretty good.
Next Season Goals And Wrap-Up
SPEAKER_01No, I'm excited. So New Brunswick here also we have uh the water system for turkey tags, and this year I think I know two people that got their turkey tag. Uh this fall coming, I think I know about ten people that got their moose tag. So I'm excited. So, Dalton, you're going again. Denver, you're going with him, I'm going with my buddy Cody. Denver, your brother, your twin brother Lane actually got his tag uh for the first time.
SPEAKER_03So he's he stole Brad.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. But he didn't get Denver. He's got his dad going. And um, I mean, other people around this area and stuff. I mean, there it's it's looking like it's gonna be a cool Facebook uh picture season for uh for us to look at and more a lot more podcasts uh with this year's moose season in store because I mean yeah, it's looking like shaping up to be an exciting year. And um we've had a lot more rain this year too, which uh could make things harder in a way, you know, because the water's gonna be everywhere, everything should be nice and green everywhere for the food and all that. That'd be interesting. But I'm really excited to uh be seeing the pictures on Facebook and and have some more people in the podcast to talk about this year's new season. Look like it's a good one. And Dalton, we'll be excited to hear about yours again second year in a row. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think it should be a good year. We guys are going for a bigger one. We learned for three days straight last year about the zone. So we're gonna take what we learned last year and hopefully pile her on to this year and go maybe a little bit bigger, hopefully, with any luck.
