How much of our worth do we tie to how others see us?
Today’s episode invites us to reflect on the difference between outward image and a heart rooted in reverence for God. As we explore Proverbs 31:30, we’ll unpack why charm and beauty might catch the world's attention but true praise belongs to those who honor God deeply, no matter who we are. Together, we’ll consider the pressures of appearance and achievement in today’s culture and discover how focusing on the condition of our hearts truly transforms our lives.
Let’s come together in prayer and devotion, trusting God to shape our hearts and remind us of what genuinely matters.

You're listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1554. Today's Devo is called Reverence Over Image. Hey there. We're the Alessi's, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Alison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast. Hello, everyone, my name is Lauren Alessi and I am your host for this week. We have been reading out of the whole chapter of Proverbs 31. And today's verse we're going to just jump right into it is Proverbs 31, verse 30. And it says this charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. You may have heard this verse before and I again, I just want to say, if you are a man or a guy and you're listening to this, man and guy are different, but to be. There's a difference. But I think it's the same. Anyways, if you are reading this verse and you're not a woman and you're like, does this apply to me? I'm going to do my best to make Proverbs 31 applicable to everybody. It's not just for married women. It's not just for women. It's really, the word of God is applicable to us all. So please, if you're a guy and you're listening to this, don't be like, I'm not gonna listen to today's episode. Hold on, keep listening. So charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. I actually think more than ever this verse applies to everybody, not just women, to everybody. Because we've always in society had issues with vanity and issues with how we looked. And I will say I feel like women have always had more of a leaning to be more aware of how they look and how they appear. I see it in my niece. It's very interesting to see at a young age just how conscious she is of what she wears, how she does her hair, how she likes, the clothes she wears and how she does her hair. At like three and four years old, they become very, very heightened to their awareness little girls do of how they look and how they appear. But in today's society, I think when it comes to vanity and appearance, we can't just say that it applies to women. I think more than ever I see young men and guys that are just have the comparison issue also of like having the muscles, having the clear skin, having the right hair, having that look that you see every other good looking guy has where I don't think it was as strong before. And I think if we disqualify men from this sort of topic, saying that only women struggle with, with vanity issues and how we look, I think we disqualify a lot of men from. Gleaning from this verse as well is the point I'm trying to make. And what we see here is that at the center of Proverbs 31 is not success, productivity, appearance or achievement. And we don't hear this in today's day and age ever. The center of success in today's day and age is productivity, appearance and achievement. If you see any TikTok for like anywhere for more than 10 seconds, they're like, look how productive I, I did my day. Look how I got dressed, how fast I got dressed and look at how great my job is. This is me on my way to work in my cool outfit and I did all of this gym routine and all of this before 5:00am you're like what? Like everything is about how productive you are, how good you look and how much you're achieving before you're the age of 35. And it's just crazy. And so this passage reminds us that outward qualities may gain attention like TikTok views, but inner, inner character and inner quality is really what truly lasts. Like a person who fears the Lord, they are what are greatly to be praised. Our culture constantly pushes people to build an identity around appearance, status, success, financial success, influence, productivity, approval from others. But scripture reflects our focus towards the condition of the heart. And that's where the Lord looks anyway, the heart. We could have the greatest job, the greatest family, but if our hearts are all out of whack, that's what the Lord looks at anyways. Not that your fruit doesn't matter. The fruit of your life matters. Like your children, they matter. But if you have awesome kids and you've got a bad heart, it's going to affect your children, it's going to affect your jobs. I've seen it where you have a bad heart, you have the dream family, you have the dream job. And eventually that bad heart catches up to your, your family catches up to your, your job. So we need to make sure our hearts are right before any outwardly appearance looks perfectly right. To fear the Lord means to live with deep reverence trust, awe and surrender before God. And it means recognizing God. You are holy, God, you are faithful, you are trustworthy, you are present and you are worthy of our obedience. And I don't need to have everything perfect God, I can laugh at the days to come because I trust you. That's a righteous heart before God. And maybe you need to ask yourself today like David prays lord, search my heart. You know my ways God, what ways do you need to come in and fix my heart? Maybe that needs to be your prayer today. And trust that God is holy, that God is present, that God is trustworthy, that when he wants to come into your heart and fix some things, just let him just surrender. Because you can have the dream life, but if you have a jacked up heart it will reflect and it will come out in your dream quote unquote life. Let's pray. Dear Lord, we thank you that you are a God that looks at the heart and you don't let anything slide God. Which means we have to be righteous in front of you. We have to be honest in front of you God. So Lord, help us to surrender. Search our hearts God, in any unclean way you see in us God. We surrender it to you God and fix our hearts Lord. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. So there you have it. Your 5 minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take on your day. If you found value in this devotional, share it with a friend.
