Would you mind telling our listeners about yourself including your role at JMT, and some of your inspirations to pursue your career?
I am a project engineer in the Water Resources group out of Columbus, Ohio. I support transportation projects across our footprint and am responsible for hydraulic design of drainage structures and stormwater management. Basically, I try to minimize our hydraulic impacts to the existing systems around our project sites!
I was always interested in math, science, and solving problems. I always hoped I could make some sort of impact on the lives of other people through my work or volunteer services too. Environmental Engineering seemed to resonate with a lot of these pillars. I'm able to get involved with software and design projects that I'm interested in while also being a positive influence on my coworkers and peers. This job allows me to work on a variety of projects across the country too, while learning new skills or ways to design things.
What’s been one of the most rewarding or significant projects that you’ve worked on, and how has that impacted you, JMT, or the AEC industry?
There's a project in Harrisburg that is ongoing; it's a large highway redesign project along Interstate 83. I learned a lot of stormwater management design skills working on this project for years. This project helped shape my ability to work with peers from other offices, sharpened my communication skills with clients and consultant partners, and helped me gain confidence in general in my engineering abilities. The project has been broken up into multiple contracts and is ongoing but has involved huge efforts from roadway, structural, water resources, and more disciplines as the corridor helps to improve traffic flow through an outdated system along I-83 in Harrisburg.
Are there any hobbies or interests outside of work that you feel have influenced your professional journey?
I loved getting involved in groups or projects that heighten my sense of community. I love getting outside and sharing hikes/walks with close friends. I love the sand volleyball community in our city too. I've made a ton of lifelong friends through our volleyball leagues, tournaments, and trips we take throughout the year.
A trash cleanup nonprofit I founded last year, Trash Party, has also reinforced my love of improving our most vulnerable communities. I think there are a lot of parallels between the foundational pillars that make us do the things we do or help others as best as we can, and this can be shared between your hobbies and your professional career.
Do you have any words of inspiration that you would like to share with our listeners? How can individuals get involved with your organization, Trash Party?
Express gratitude as much as you can; it helps to ground you and remind you of what's really important. Try to pursue your interests as best as you can, and you'll always find other people interested in those things as well.
