Transcript

Sebastian Kwapich: Welcome to Mandatory Music. Sebastian. I'm here with my best friend Mike and we do a podcast.

Mandatory Music: We do talk.

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: Yes, we do. this one's going to be a little bit different. We're basically just going to talk about the year.

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: We're about 10 months into this podcast and I mean, the new year just happened upon us six days ago. So, we just both thought this might be a good time to reflect on the year in music,…

Sebastian Kwapich: what we experienced, what we're looking forward to. and again, I got Mike on the other side. How are you doing, Mike? Good.

Mandatory Music: I’m good

Sebastian Kwapich: Good.

Mandatory Music: yeah, we took a week off last week and I was saying to you before we started, it was only one week, but with all the Christmas holidays, the last time we recorded was two weeks ago. So, we were both sick and…

Sebastian Kwapich: We were also both sick, too.

Mandatory Music: I think everybody's been sick over the holidays, it seems to be everywhere.

Sebastian Kwapich: Man.

Mandatory Music: Yikes,…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. I don't know what's going on in Cam Loose, but there was a whooping cough epidemic and a walking pneumonia epidemic BC in the Lower Mainland over Christmas.

Mandatory Music: yikes. and…

Sebastian Kwapich: So everybody was No.

Mandatory Music: walking pneumonia is no joke. unfortunately I had it once and it was rather bad.

Sebastian Kwapich: Can you function on it? Okay.

Mandatory Music: No, no, you can't do anything. And I remember I took a couple days off work and I'm like, "Yeah, I'm fine." And I came back to work and people were like, " you look like you're gray right now. you go back home cuz you're a mess. Just leave." Okay. So, I went back home. I think I took a whole week off and it was one of those things. But, it was funny before we started, I was looking for the record button. I couldn't find it. I forgotten how to use this.

Sebastian Kwapich: It's been 14 days.

Mandatory Music: It's been so long. we're using Google Meet and we've only used it a couple of times and I totally forgot…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, Mike's not allowed to use this work zoom anymore.

Mandatory Music: where the record button was and I had a little bit of a moment of No, I'm not. The work Zoom Apparently, it went away as of December 31st. So thank you my employer for letting me use your Zoom for 10 months…

Sebastian Kwapich: There you go. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: because it's a huge cost savings because these things aren't free. But that's the ride had to come to an end, but it was lovely. The Zoom was we had every option it was a full load. It was the super version of Zoom and it was pretty awesome. I could share music easily and share whatever.

Sebastian Kwapich: the max version.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, it was m And at Google Meet I can't seem to do any of that. So, it's a learning curve.

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: There's probably an upgraded Google Meet.

Mandatory Music: It probably is, but at the end when it comes down to it, how much do you want to pay for all this when we're just doing this ourselves?

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, that's true. A fledgling podcast here.

Mandatory Music: We're growing slowly, but we don't make money doing this. We do this because we love it and we love talking to each other.

Sebastian Kwapich: I mean,…

Mandatory Music: …

Sebastian Kwapich: one day maybe, but March 10th or…

Mandatory Music:

Mandatory Music:

Mandatory Music: one day. So, we started this in March. I believe it March was our first episode.

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: something, I think was our first episode…

Mandatory Music:

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah. and…

Sebastian Kwapich: if I'm not mistaken. Yep.

Mandatory Music: if sort of looking back and reflecting on it, I don't know about you, but I was pretty nervous. I not hesitant but there's some fear there of on our tripping over each other and sort of stumbling a lot of times. I know there's a couple episodes I had edited out myself saying or when I did say things that were just like wow god just tripping over all your words and just completely just face palming yourself going man this is rough right? Yeah. but it's amazing. That's I know I feel how much better we've gotten because you go back and listen to some older ones and it's like man okay and I've had some old friends say hey we're listening and I just say hey it gets better don't worry it we're Right.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, I do have people that come up to me goes, " I listen to your podcast, by the way." I'm just like, "Oh, sick. Thanks for that." So, I got a question for you,…

Mandatory Music: Sure.

Sebastian Kwapich: though. Do you know what our most downloaded episode is?

Mandatory Music: I think it's the David Gilmore one.

Sebastian Kwapich: Luck and Strange. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: Luck and  strange,…

Sebastian Kwapich: Sebastian Kwapich: Do you know what her Do you know…

Mandatory Music: which is like it was Yeah,…

Sebastian Kwapich: what are Go ahead.

Mandatory Music: in our world it's a high number. We won't divulge and…

Sebastian Kwapich: It doubles the second highest episode.

Mandatory Music: I think one is what's the second one?

Sebastian Kwapich: Yes. Rewind. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: Really interesting.

Sebastian Kwapich: And do you know what our least downloaded episode is?

Mandatory Music: Least downloaded. No, I don't really my god.

Sebastian Kwapich: The other David Gilmore. He has only 14 downloads. I don't know why it's the polar opposite, but I mean I guess people wanted to connect and…

Mandatory Music: Interesting. I don't know. That's Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: with the new album in September, I guess. So, yeah.

Mandatory Music: Interesting.

Sebastian Kwapich: So, Yep.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, cuz the downloads were coming faster for a while. I was like, "Wow, cool. we're heading off here." they're steady. I'm happy with what we get and I'm happy with all the people who choose to listen because it's cool to see all the countries that weve I think we've been listening to 55 countries, which to me is mindboggling…

00:05:00

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, it's crazy.

Mandatory Music: because we're just two knuckleheads yammering on about music and the fact that other people actually listen to us is really cool.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, eight 18 countries in total.

Mandatory Music: It's just amazing. let me see Let's see here.

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: Interesting.

Mandatory Music: Location. Yeah,…

Sebastian Kwapich: But people could be using a VPN as well. So, …

Mandatory Music: that's true. let's see. All time. How many countries what do we got here? cities,…

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: that's the last All episodes. There we go.

Mandatory Music: 57 countries total,…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yep. I know.

Mandatory Music: which is bananas, it's absolutely bananas. Even we've had a few in Madagascar and Morocco which it blows my mind I don't know it just for whatever reason geography.

Sebastian Kwapich: It's crazy.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, it's absolutely crazy. So, thanks. We got one in Ghana. Look at us. we're stretching.

Sebastian Kwapich: We're on our way here,…

Mandatory Music: We're on our way.

Sebastian Kwapich: boys and girls. It is a good time.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, we've got a lot of different African countries here, which is really cool. But they're all over the world. It's everything. South Africa, Australia. it's amazing. So, we're going to keep doing what we do because I don't know about you, but I love doing this. It's fun. And I know I gave you the self-imposed week off…

Sebastian Kwapich: And no,…

Mandatory Music: because I don't think you wanted to take a week off and I just basically said I need a week off and that's Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: it's all It's good. I didn't have a lot of time during the holidays anyways, so beautiful.

Mandatory Music:

Mandatory Music: And it's okay. we both have full-time jobs and we both have, busy lives. you got a lovely lady in your life. I've been married and I got kids and blah blah blah and, we got Stuff going on. So yeah, But it was weird. It was on last Monday because that's usually when we record is Monday evenings. That's our night, and my wife and…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yep.

Mandatory Music: kids know, okay, dad's going downstairs. He's going to talk to Seb for ever. because we usually talk for half an hour, 45 minutes before we even hit the record button, and then we do our thing. but last Monday was weird.'m like, " I'm not going downstairs tonight. H this is strange." I thought about texting saying, "Hey, let's just get on and talk." And then I never did. It was the 30th anyway where I'm sure you were busy, but I had that like Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, I was getting ready for New Year's and stuff, but yeah.

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Okay. let's talk New Year's.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Went to my girlfriend's sister's place and…

Mandatory Music: What did you do for New Year's? Nice. Yeah. Cool.

Sebastian Kwapich: the whole family, a lot of people were actually there. So yeah, it was just chill and then drove her son home and then went back to here or…

Mandatory Music: Yep. Nice.

Sebastian Kwapich: to her place and stayed the And on New Year's Day, we started the new year off doing the penguin plunge.

Mandatory Music: Nice. …

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: So I ran Yeah.

Mandatory Music: I'm assuming that's similar to the polar bear swim kind of idea. That's you.

Sebastian Kwapich: They just call the penguin plunge in Rocky Point, but it's the same thing. It's basically just running into water and…

Mandatory Music: Same thing. Okay. amazing. It's cool.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. six degree water. you run out. but I'm telling you,…

Mandatory Music: That is cool.

Sebastian Kwapich: man, give gold plunges a chance for people that have bad circulation problems because you feel so great after that.

Mandatory Music: Really? Those endorphins were lowing.

Sebastian Kwapich: Coming out of the water and probably for the next hour or two, I was awake. And I could swear I could feel my blood flowing around me.

Mandatory Music: That's cool.

Sebastian Kwapich: You get these little tingles and stuff like that. So, there was these four guys next to us that I'm sure they had a bet going on because they didn't get out of the water and…

Mandatory Music: God.

Sebastian Kwapich: they're just sitting there looking at each other, …

Mandatory Music: Yep. Yikes.

Sebastian Kwapich: who's going to last the longest in the water. But, yeah.

Mandatory Music: Good.

Sebastian Kwapich: So yeah,…

Mandatory Music: You know what? That's amazing because you got a stronger constitution than I have because that honestly has I do it, but I don't think

Sebastian Kwapich: there's a hack that I've been recently told by Deb and if you don't want to go do the whole cold plunge thing where you have to go outside or fill the water with the hot tub. What you can do is when you're showering, you can end your shower in a cold shower.

Mandatory Music: That's…

Sebastian Kwapich: So yeah.

Mandatory Music: what they say is really good for You last couple of minutes in some cold water.

Sebastian Kwapich: So you just turn it off and…

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: you end it off in a cold shower and it's kind of the same effect sort of. So yeah.

Mandatory Music: Man, I like me a hot shower and I don't like being cold and I think that I know I should do it be.

Sebastian Kwapich: Man, I take scolding showers.

Mandatory Music: Yeah. you come out and…

Sebastian Kwapich: My showers are so hot.

Mandatory Music: you're red and you're sweating. You're like, "Okay, that was a good shower.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yep.

Mandatory Music: I think I need to shower again because I'm sweating profusely." But that's how I deal. But no, I'm super proud of you for doing that because that is absolutely awesome.

Sebastian Kwapich: You just turn your brain off.

Mandatory Music: You just go right.

Sebastian Kwapich: You just turn your brain off and go, "Okay, I'm running into the water." You just run in and you don't stop until you go underneath and then you just get right back out again.

Mandatory Music: Yeah. And Yeah,…

Sebastian Kwapich: So, yeah.

Mandatory Music: I'm sure that was some chilly water. six degrees is not warm. That's cold,…

00:10:00

Sebastian Kwapich: No, you just get in and…

Mandatory Music: That is cold.

Sebastian Kwapich: get out. Nice.

Mandatory Music: I went for New Year's Day run with my running group of friends and we just went into the snowy trails and it was glorious It was amazing.

Sebastian Kwapich: Funny that you mentioned that though because driving around on New Year's Day I just noticed so many people out running or cycling and…

Mandatory Music: Right.

Sebastian Kwapich: the mentality is start the year off this way and…

Mandatory Music: Exactly. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: you will continue it on throughout the year. but yeah it's like the day that everyone was working out for some reason.

Mandatory Music: It's crazy. Did you happen to go to a gym on New Year's Day?

Sebastian Kwapich: No, no,…

Mandatory Music: Because I'm sure there'd be a line of out the door of people signing up to get in there for this Yeah,…

Sebastian Kwapich: no, no. Yeah, you got to wait that seven days and then the week after New Year's, you can probably go back because half the people aren't coming back. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: it went insane. that's the thing,'s But no, the New Year's Day run was fun. Yeah, I go with these guys every year and it was easy breezy. there's lots of snow, but you're running in some compact snow and it was 5 minutes out of the town I live in. It's like a whole new world. It was just quiet and snow covered trees, snow covered everything. It was absolutely beautiful. It was awesome. It's just awesome.

Sebastian Kwapich: Mike lives in a snow apocalypse during the winter.

Mandatory Music: I We actually usually, but this year aside from the mountains, there's no snow. my yard has got very little.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, we haven't had any snow here either,…

Mandatory Music: There's nothing on the roads.

Sebastian Kwapich: Weird.

Mandatory Music: It rained Christmas Eve. I don't think that that's not a thing here in Rain. we usually get rain cold. a couple years ago it was like minus 30. So that's kind of how it works. So I guess And then for me for New Year's we watched TV and I made nachos. yeah. I got complain about cheese. which I am allergic to cheese, but whatever. That's fine.

Sebastian Kwapich: Sometimes though,…

Sebastian Kwapich: sometimes you just want to eat the cheese.

Mandatory Music: you got to do it. My kids love it when dad makes we call them the super nachos, which they're not really super. They're just made with love. so I decided to do something different. And this is the downfall of me doing something different. I should just stick with the formula that get a brick of cheese and grate the cheese. Don't buy the bagged grated cheese. so I bought the bag cheese. I'm like, " Texmex, that's fun. and it's got lots of different cheese in it. So, the bag had a lot of cheese and I did the nachos in the thing. I cooked some ground beef and lah blah. Pulled the nachos out of the oven. The kids are like, "Where's the cheese?" And I'm like, "That's a really good question." I did.

Sebastian Kwapich: You didn't even put the cheese on.

Mandatory Music: I put the whole bag of cheese on these nachos and literally I don't know where the cheese went because it was gone.

Sebastian Kwapich: Melt it into the ether.

Mandatory Music: It disintegrated and It just evaporated. And I'm like, "What the hell?" So the kids are like, "What kind of cheese did you use?" I said, "I used the bag text." And the wife's like, " don't use the bag cheese." I'm like, " where were you 20 minutes ago,…

Sebastian Kwapich: That's common knowledge.

Mandatory Music:

Mandatory Music: " And I'm like, apparently I'm never using bagged or pre-graded cheese ever again because the kids are like, "These suck." And I'm like, "Yes, they do. They're awful." And yeah,…

Sebastian Kwapich: You know what? Make your own nachos next time.

Mandatory Music: if you don't like it,…

Sebastian Kwapich: All right.

Mandatory Music: make your own. That's words of wisdom. That's super I didn't say that cuz I was in a good mood, but I was like, "No, I just apologize." I'm like, " these do suck. I'll make it up. Bowl Super Nachos with actual grated sharp cheddar cheese and maybe some mozzarella…

Sebastian Kwapich: There you go.

Mandatory Music: if I'm feeling spicy." but 2024 in music, what obviously Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: The obvious highlight of the music journey is going to Edmonton for the Metallica concerts, that is like I've never seen them. I guess Seattle counts outside of the Lower Mainland, but I've never actually flown somewhere else to go see them.

Mandatory Music: No, felt like rock stars,…

Sebastian Kwapich: So felt like rock stars. Yeah. And …

Mandatory Music: right? Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: we celebrated for Four or four days.

Mandatory Music: Four days.

Sebastian Kwapich: So that was a good time.

Mandatory Music: And we still talk to each other after it,…

Sebastian Kwapich: I know.

Mandatory Music: too. We didn't get as sick of each other…

Sebastian Kwapich: Amazing. But we both can agree…

Mandatory Music: because we've never spent that much time together every day for five straight days.

Sebastian Kwapich: though watching Metallica and…

Mandatory Music: Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: Edmonton, they are starting to show some of their age. I mean they're in their 60s now. they're not going to. And a heavy metal is not a sustainable type of music to play longevity wise…

Mandatory Music: It's not easy, No.

Sebastian Kwapich: because it's very demanding physically,…

Mandatory Music: No, it is.

Sebastian Kwapich: still sounded great, …

Mandatory Music: Yeah, sure.

Sebastian Kwapich: but there is flaws and they're more noticeable every time I see them now.

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: …

Mandatory Music: If you were look back on TW, it was 201 what 19 last time cuz I didn't go you was that 2019 you saw them or 18 might have been 18 17 I don't even know.

Sebastian Kwapich: it would have been the year after they released hardwired.

Mandatory Music:

Mandatory Music: So it would have been god seven it was a stadium show as well. do you remember the quality of their playing then?

00:15:00

Sebastian Kwapich: I can't recall, but they sounded great. I didn't really pick up much issues with it.

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Some of them were pretty obvious when we said,…

Sebastian Kwapich: So, no,…

Mandatory Music: we're not going to name any songs or blame any band members. It was a collective effort." And they did.

Sebastian Kwapich: honestly, I have to put it on the workload of songs they have to learn for the tour they doubled the workload cuz it's a no repeat tour, So instead of learning 13 to I guess feasibly they're probably going to learn about 18 songs cuz they have some rotating slots.

Mandatory Music: It is. Sure. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: So instead of learning 18 songs you learn 36 songs.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, but I kind of think that's a bit of a copout…

Sebastian Kwapich: So yeah,…

Mandatory Music: because I understand they've made a lot and they've been doing this a long time, but really where some them the most blatant one was Sanitarium.

Sebastian Kwapich: dude, …

Mandatory Music: They've been playing that song for 39 years they've been playing that song.

Sebastian Kwapich: how to play that mic. Come on.

Mandatory Music: How do you I understand people make mistakes…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: but the mistakes that we saw were just it'd be like me and…

Sebastian Kwapich: They were just off there, weren't they? Yeah.

Mandatory Music: you playing it was like what the hell happened just it was a complete stop. but it happens like they're human and…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah.

Mandatory Music: even Hadfield makes mistakes, Lars makes mistakes, Rob makes I don't know if Rob does because you can't hear him So really Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: So, I have a kind of a music question as well, which is not Metallica related,…

Sebastian Kwapich: but is there a new artist or…

Mandatory Music: I just thought she was tattoo lady.

Sebastian Kwapich: a band that you found that you're experienced for the first time this last year that you're like, I'm going to check these people out. I keep going back to Kat Von D. Yeah. And I listen to her stuff. even the other day I was listening to a couple of her songs and I had no idea that she was a musician first before she was a tattooist.

Mandatory Music: I totally really

Sebastian Kwapich: So she took classical voice and classical piano before she even became a tattooist. So as a child she was learning classical music from an early age.

Mandatory Music: really. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: So before she became an artist she was musically trained and when I found out Kat Vundy was doing songs I was like okay whatever it's just a thing and…

Mandatory Music: Mhm. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: then a song was released the one that I sent you that you were like this is some kind of erotic nightmare or night dream. So it has lots Yeah.

Mandatory Music: Not a nightmare. Believe me, that video was not a nightmare.

Sebastian Kwapich: So, the song is called I am a machine and it's with Kat Von D and the singer from Arch Enemy.

Mandatory Music: That's a white.

Sebastian Kwapich: Alyssa White.

Mandatory Music: Okay.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, Alyssa And so they do a duet in but through that song, I started listening to a bunch of her other songs and she's very like synthy synth wavy.

Mandatory Music: I like it.

Sebastian Kwapich: But she's got a good style, she's got some good music out there.

Mandatory Music: Interesting. …

Sebastian Kwapich: I was very surprised. So

Mandatory Music: that's completely Okay. Let me ask you, how did you stumble upon

Sebastian Kwapich: YouTube, No, Tik Tok.

Mandatory Music: Tik Tok.

Sebastian Kwapich: Cuz they did the video and I was going through Tik Tok and there was clips from the music video with and I'm like, " I know this girl. it's Alicia White from And I'm like,…

Mandatory Music: Yep. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: wait. That's Kat Von D." "What the heck? They're doing a song together." So, then I'm like, "Okay, I got to look at this song." And then I listened to it and…

Mandatory Music: Interesting. Wow.

Sebastian Kwapich: I'm like, "It's actually a really good song." So,…

Mandatory Music: That's good for you.

Sebastian Kwapich: so yeah, I've been on the Kat Von D train for a little bit in the last year. So, that was the most surprising musical discovery I had…

Mandatory Music: That's cool.

Sebastian Kwapich: because yes, I knew that she dabbled in singing, but I didn't know that she was actually really good.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, she kind of has that stigma of the TV tattoo star and…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yes,…

Mandatory Music: you're like, "Yeah, okay, great. You're singing now. Good for you. Okay, move on. Nobody cares." But your name

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: you're just going to sell records because of your fame from tattooing, But she actually makes good music. So yeah.

Mandatory Music: and she's trained, which is that's making me want to go listen to her. even you telling me I was like, "Yeah, I still don't care." but now that you tell me she's actually well wellversed in the art,…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: which that's amazing. That's really cool.

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: So I mean she has a bunch of producers that work with her obviously because she can afford to do that, But …

Mandatory Music: Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: but she still creates all the songs.

Mandatory Music: Hey, why not?

Sebastian Kwapich: So yeah.

Mandatory Music: That's amazing.

Sebastian Kwapich: So that's a new discovery for me. So, it's interesting.

Mandatory Music: Okay. I No.

Sebastian Kwapich: Glory hammer.

Mandatory Music: I could go with Angus Mix, but I'm not going to. he's the former.

Sebastian Kwapich: We all know it's glory hammer. Bizarre.

Mandatory Music: No, I found this band. I don't even where I think it might have been like an Apple new music thing and its my algorithm is so Yes, with all the fantasy metal and all the weird stoner metal that I do like it in it just stuff just pops up. You're like what is this? But I found a band called High Desert Queen. they're from I think I might have shared it with you at one point,…

00:20:00

Sebastian Kwapich: Why does that sound familiar actually? Okay.

Mandatory Music: shared you a song, but they put a record out this year called Palm Reader and they're kind of like a Corrosion and Conformity Meets Black they're Sabathy, it's heavy and slow and it's singer's awesome and the production's amazing. They got two records out. They put the other one out in 2021. And they're a fun follow on Instagram, too. I comment on stuff from time to time. They just seem like genuine people just trying to make it. They're not huge. they're hardworking and they write really really good songs and I think they're just a fourpiece. And on the song Solar Rain is the closing track off of Palm Reader. it's awesome.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, this is right up your alley, man. It's got that sludgy sound.

Mandatory Music: It is. And yeah, it's very sludgy. Yes. And it's just cool. it's It's huge. The whole record's good. They don't write bad songs. And they remind me of it's Kro Conformity mixed with Mastadon. And yeah, they are Mastedon though.

Sebastian Kwapich: Good, man.

Mandatory Music: They're amazing. They are so talented. You name me a better band with three different singers in the one band.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah, they're good.

Mandatory Music: And they all can sing. Their drummer is my opinion maybe the best drummer and he sings when he plays drums and it's just cool. But anyways, yeah, High Desert Queen, they kick ass. They really do.

Sebastian Kwapich: Speaking of which, drums. We were at dinner yesterday. this is Deb's birthday, but we were talking about Yeah,…

Mandatory Music: Happy birthday.

Sebastian Kwapich: we were talking about Drumo. Did you know it's based out of Absford?

Mandatory Music: What? I was watching I think it was the Mike Portnet one where he listened or he was doing something and…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: he's like, "Yeah, I'm glad to be back in Vancouver." And I'm like, "I knew it." I just had this feeling it was out of Vancouver, but Absford interesting.

Sebastian Kwapich: Abotsford. Yeah.

Mandatory Music:

Mandatory Music: That is awesome.

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: Drum school in abbotsford. Drumeo. So they do all the YouTube channel stuff from the …

Mandatory Music: Yep. Really? That is cool…

Sebastian Kwapich: I think so. So I can see that

Mandatory Music: because they put out I'm trying to watch less YouTube because I found it was kind of trying I think it was rotting my brain but I found Romeo you watch one video about something and then the algorithm tells you hey if you like this you're going to like these 10,000 other videos. Okay, I'm going to watch all the videos. But I stumbled on Drumo. I think it was the Portoy Learning Numa from Tulle. I think that's my god.

Sebastian Kwapich: So good.

Mandatory Music: It took him six hours to figure it out and he's just I yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: The one with the mega death drummer is good, too, where he does he's never heard of Mr. Bright Side and…

Mandatory Music: Okay.

Sebastian Kwapich: he listens to it blind, so with no drums, and then he's like, "Okay, he comes up with his own drum part for it, and then he listens to the actual drum part afterwards and does commentary on it as well.

Mandatory Music: Interesting.

Sebastian Kwapich: I did that different. I didn't know that was in double time and it's just fascinating to see the difference between somebody like what's his name? It's Turk,…

Mandatory Music: Derek Van urine or…

Sebastian Kwapich: right? Yeah.

Mandatory Music: something. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: Because he's like a metal drummer and…

Mandatory Music: He's metal drummer.

Sebastian Kwapich: then you're bringing it to Yeah.

Mandatory Music: Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: to Mr. Bright Side.

Mandatory Music: I watched one with I think he's a jazz drummer.

Sebastian Kwapich: Which is a song by Killers.

Mandatory Music: He's Italian guy. I can't remember his name, but he's known for having this wrist are insanely fast, but I can't remember what song it was. They're like he'd never heard the song before. And then he charted it out really fun cuz he was kind of to him singing it to himself as he played.

Sebastian Kwapich: Do not

Mandatory Music: But the way he would sing meant things how he would drum. It was really really neat. And then there was this other drummer we're going off on a tangent on Drumo, but there's a song he'd never heard and he listened to it once. He's okay let's do it. And then he did it and you're holy gez. it was like and it was fairly close to being not spot on, but it was yes.

Sebastian Kwapich: Are you talking about Ricardo Merlin and he did through the fire and flames the dragon force song,…

Mandatory Music: Dragon Force. Yes. my god,…

Sebastian Kwapich: right? Yeah.

Mandatory Music: that song is insane on its own. And he did it and this just watching this guy drum it this Ricardo guy, it was absolutely nuts.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: And I did watch one with the police drummer. He was playing a bunch of police songs, but I guess a new one just came out where he listened to something for the first time and apparently just completely nailed it. And he's a Awesome drummer, man. he's cool.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. there's the one with Larnell Lewis, I think is his name, and he listens to Enter Sandman for the first time and…

Mandatory Music: Cool.

00:25:00

Sebastian Kwapich: and then mimics it basically is almost flawless.

Mandatory Music: Really?

Sebastian Kwapich: He makes a couple mistakes, but you're just like,…

Mandatory Music: Just got it.

Sebastian Kwapich: "Wow, that guy just literally nailed the drum part after one listen." So,…

Mandatory Music: But has he really never heard Sandman before?

Sebastian Kwapich: yeah. Apparently not.

Mandatory Music: Interesting. It …

Sebastian Kwapich: Which I don't know, I can't buy that. It's freaking sad, Everyone's heard sand, Yeah.

Mandatory Music: that's the thing. even if you're not a metal fan or Metallica fan or you listen to you flipping back in the day you're flipping stations on a radio, it was on every station. It was everywhere. It was on pop radio.

Sebastian Kwapich: In the 90s all throughout.

Mandatory Music: It was on rock radio, It was everywhere. but whatever. if he had maybe he just does listen to that kind of music and I don't want to judge.

Sebastian Kwapich: That's true.

Mandatory Music: So he probably…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. He's like a jazz drummer, I think. So, he's probably Yeah.

Mandatory Music: then he probably hasn't those jazz drummers man they know their stuff. what other things stood out to you? before we started you had some sort of comment about something was you've already about it was Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, it was the Pink Floyd the David Gilmore which is very fascinating because our best downloaded episode is David Gilmore and…

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Right.

Sebastian Kwapich: our worst downloaded episode is also David Gilmore.

Mandatory Music: That's interesting.

Sebastian Kwapich: So maybe it's just the album people don't like or…

Mandatory Music: Okay. That's I think Yeah, probably.

Sebastian Kwapich: maybe it's because we hit a right timing to release that one because the new album Strang just came out so people were probably searching for it. so maybe that's it. But I do have a couple of look forward to in 2025.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, let's do it.

Sebastian Kwapich: So, most likely there will be a new Mega Death album in 2025.

Mandatory Music: That's the rumor. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: But this is just a comment and it's like a lot of people I read stuff on the forums all the time, Reddit forums, and how people are like pro mega death, anti- Metallica, but Metallica has had a stable core except for the Jason Newstead incident and whatnot throughout their entire history. So that kind of says something about what they're trying to achieve as a group. They're trying to create a band and a family. You don't even need to look that deep into Mega's lineup to see the revolving door of people that have constantly gone through that band…

Mandatory Music: Yep.

Sebastian Kwapich: because it's Dave's band. And so if you're not aligned with Dave's vision or his methods, you're not going to last very long.

Mandatory Music: No, you're out.

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Which …

Sebastian Kwapich: Did you see the Marty Freeman thing with Meade Death recently?

Mandatory Music: when you played on stage with him.

Sebastian Kwapich: They were trying to reunite for a tour, but he was like,…

Mandatory Music: Right. Right.

Sebastian Kwapich: "What they offered me was less than what I make in Japan just being a studio musician." So, he's like, "Why would I go and do this," and I just gave him the bare minimum that I needed to survive and they didn't even match that. so they were lowballing him for a tour…

Mandatory Music: God.

Sebastian Kwapich: because they wanted to reunite the original Meade Death Groove Meade lineup. And so Marty Freeman Yeah.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, he was.

Sebastian Kwapich: Marty Freeman was the longest standing guitarist that played with Dave Stain in the golden age of Meade Death.

Mandatory Music: And it wasn't even that long.

Sebastian Kwapich: Three albums,…

Mandatory Music: That's because it was Rust in Peace,…

Sebastian Kwapich: maybe three or four albums.

Mandatory Music: Countdown, Euthan Asia, Cryptic Writings, and he left when Risk came out. So he was on five.

Sebastian Kwapich: He So five. Okay. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: So you remember the song breadline from risk?

Sebastian Kwapich: Which is a lot.

Mandatory Music: You probably don't.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yes. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: So the story is when Marty decided to leave was when he recorded the solo for it,…

Sebastian Kwapich: I know it. Yeah. yeah.

Mandatory Music: Dave didn't like it and when Marty left and Dave didn't tell him and Dave recorded the solo himself and then put the record and then he put it on the record and didn't tell Marty till the album was out and Marty's like, "You know what? I'm out." That's the last straw,…

Sebastian Kwapich: See you later.

Mandatory Music: You can only take so much. But …

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: but Dave I guess he's got a vision I guess and sometimes I think it might be misguided. Maybe he needs to have a stable group of people in his circle instead of just revolving doors because I used to be a big mega guy but I no

Sebastian Kwapich: I don The last album to me was very weak. there seems to be a stunted growth in his evolution of music,…

Mandatory Music: It all sounds the same.

Sebastian Kwapich: but I'm very curious So, their new guitarist, his name is Timu Mantisari and he's from the band Winter Sun. I don't know…

Mandatory Music: Okay.

Sebastian Kwapich: if you're familiar with them, but they're like a melodic death metal band basically, like a harder version of NightWish without a female singer.

Mandatory Music: Okay. Right.

Sebastian Kwapich: So that's where he comes from, but that's like their new guitarist. And so he was in press release saying that they're actively getting riffs together to work on a new album. So the other rumor too is that Tulle might be coming out with a new album soon as well cuz there's Yeah.

00:30:00

Mandatory Music: Interesting. that has me interested because they don't release very many and that's the beauty.

Sebastian Kwapich: No. …

Mandatory Music: Really?

Sebastian Kwapich: I'm just gonna try to find this thing here.

Mandatory Music: Because the newest I can't remember…

Sebastian Kwapich: Fear Innoculum

Mandatory Music: what it was called my god. Thank you. I was thinking lateralis but I'm like no that was 2006. no that was 10,000 days.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: I'm thinking of the 2000 whatever. bit of a scattered brain but that's okay. more tool music would be absolutely amazing.

Sebastian Kwapich: So, there is some rumors of a new album or that they're working on a new album back in August of last year. so it's speculation though. There's no concrete information, but people are, …

Mandatory Music: That would be number one on the list really.

Sebastian Kwapich: seem to think that there's something in the works for tools. So, yeah,…

Mandatory Music: If you're thinking of the large bands putting put I think

Sebastian Kwapich: I mean, Fearculum came out four years ago, right? So, they spent what was 14 years between Finoculum and the previous one. So, yeah.

Mandatory Music: I think it came out in 2019, didn't it? Or was it 21? It was 21. You're right. You're right. It was 21. My bad. Yeah. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: So, that has me excited as well, right? So, yeah.

Mandatory Music: That is huge news. I also read Iron Maiden's going back on tour. but it's the Run for Your Lives,…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, the legacy tour, right? Or something.

Mandatory Music: the 50th anniversary tour, this year. I think it starts in April or…

Sebastian Kwapich: I guess we're going Mike.

Mandatory Music: something. I don't know if they're …

Sebastian Kwapich: They may not be coming this side.

Mandatory Music: let's talk about this.

Sebastian Kwapich: If they come, do you want to go? Basically, is what you're asking me.

Mandatory Music: I'm really hesitant because I don't think I want to see them without Niko on drums.

Sebastian Kwapich: I don't know. You guy might be good.

Mandatory Music: Might be.

Sebastian Kwapich: You never know.

Mandatory Music: There's no Niko.

Sebastian Kwapich: I guess that all depends on how badly your son wants to go. Hey, I'll tell you right now,…

Mandatory Music: Yeah, I think that we'll go.

Sebastian Kwapich: if you want to go and your son wants to go, I'll go with you guys for sure.

Mandatory Music: That's I figured as much,…

Sebastian Kwapich: So, I'll leave it up to Cooper. It will be Cooper's decision.

Mandatory Music: apparently But Bruce has already said they've been playing songs they've never played before live.

Sebastian Kwapich: So, that's got you excited,…

Mandatory Music: And it does…

Sebastian Kwapich: doesn't it?

Mandatory Music: because they're only playing up to Fear of the Dark, I believe, and that's it. They're not playing anything new.

Sebastian Kwapich: Remember when we heard Alexander the Great,…

Mandatory Music: But that was pretty cool. That was No,…

Sebastian Kwapich: never heard that song live because they basically never play that live.

Mandatory Music: that was No,…

Sebastian Kwapich: What for the punky songs?

Mandatory Music: And I don't know. I'd have to look at the catalog even if it's first two album stuff that I don't know those records very well, but having Bruce on vocals would be pretty cool for some of those songs.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: A Phantom of the Opera. I'm sure they played that, even 22 of Cage Avenue. I haven't heard that song in a long time. That'd be fun. I'm just listening to Winter Sun right now, giving it a shot here.

Sebastian Kwapich: giving it a shot.

Mandatory Music: But yeah, no, it's going to be a gigantic tour. I think they just got sort of Europe and maybe some North America dates announced. I'm not even sure to be perfectly honest, but I know they're starting Europe like they always do. And I think the frenetic tour dates, the pace will be insane as usual, which I don't understand.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, they don't mess around. Hey, when they tour,…

Mandatory Music: They don't.

Sebastian Kwapich: they tour. Even at the ripe old age as they're in their late 60s,…

Mandatory Music: Yeah. …

Sebastian Kwapich: mid to late 60s …

Mandatory Music: and they play three,…

Sebastian Kwapich: right? …

Mandatory Music: four nights a week and it's crazy.

Sebastian Kwapich: yeah. I don't understand that. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: Like it and obviously they love They love playing live. but obviously I think I had a prediction a few months ago that they're going to put a record out this year.

Sebastian Kwapich: I think it'll be maybe next year at the earliest,…

Mandatory Music: I don't

Sebastian Kwapich: but our prediction of New Metallica is probably out the window now considering they're going back on tour next year. So, they're doing a whole bunch of dates to a bunch of cities in North America,…

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yep.

Sebastian Kwapich: I believe, that they didn't go to originally. which I didn't actually foresee that happening at all. I thought they were doing a shortened tour,…

Mandatory Music: I didn't Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: but I guess this is the new way of doing it. So, they do a sweep of North America and Europe and then take a long time off, then go back and do another sweep of that same area…

Mandatory Music: Yeah, maybe they'll come to Vancouver and…

Sebastian Kwapich: but just with different cities, So, yeah, I doubt it.

Mandatory Music: I'm probably not going to go. I don't want to go see him in a stadium. I don't know…

Sebastian Kwapich: BC Place better.

Mandatory Music: if I'm not…

Sebastian Kwapich: It's better now.

Mandatory Music: if I'm not sitting super close like I don't know.

00:35:00

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Glory hammer.

Mandatory Music: Just arenas are I don't know. We need to go to a club show this year. That's what we need to do. We need to find something that both of us like in a smaller venue because we haven't done that in a long I know Arch enemy's coming to Vancouver but yeah I think that's too psycho for me I think okay yes it's not bound is

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, they're coming soon, I got news for you, I got news. I'm going to a concert with Deb in the last week of Apocalyptica. They're at the Queen E.

Mandatory Music: No. No way.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, dude.

Mandatory Music: Man, that's going to be an amazing night of music, dude. Yeah,…

Sebastian Kwapich: We weren't even planning on going. I just brought it up and she's like, she knows them as well. She's like, I love apocalyptic." She likes classical music and…

Mandatory Music: Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: that kind of stuff. So I'm like,…

Mandatory Music: My god.

Sebastian Kwapich: "Do you want to go?" She's like, "Let's go." So I'm like, "Screw it." And I just booked the tickets to the Queen E..

Mandatory Music: Did it. Nice. That's a Yes.

Sebastian Kwapich: So for those people that don't know what Apocalyptica is, there are four Finnish or Swedish guys, I think, that they're all chists and this particular concert is a tribute to Metallica. So every song they're doing is Metallica song.

Mandatory Music: My god. Really? …

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah.

Mandatory Music: that's going to be awesome. I am jealous. I am happy for you. That's going to be an amazing night of music for you and your lovely lady.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, it was one of those of the- moment things that we just booked and…

Mandatory Music: It's gonna so that's end of February.

Sebastian Kwapich: so yeah, February 24th, I believe. Yeah. So,…

Mandatory Music: Okay. If you don't mind,…

Sebastian Kwapich: at the Queen E.

Mandatory Music: can you take just a little video of something?

Sebastian Kwapich: Yes, I will absolutely do that.

Mandatory Music: The songs I love, if they play, something like Orion or…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, I will.

Mandatory Music: something, just give me a 20 second video and…

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: I will do it.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, that'd be cool.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, Orion should be on there. I think that's Yeah,…

Mandatory Music: I would think so. I would think. that's amazing.

Sebastian Kwapich: but it's listening to Metallica with four chists basically.

Mandatory Music: Then are they coming with drummers and…

Sebastian Kwapich: So, I think it's just the four of them.

Mandatory Music: guitar players at all or is it just the full man, that's going to be awesome.

Sebastian Kwapich: If anyone wants to get a taste of what Apocalyptica is I cannot spell it right now. There is a song that they sing called Funeral. that is absolutely amazing. And it gives you the scope of what they're capable of.

Mandatory Music: Really? Winter sounds kind of cool,…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Wow.

Mandatory Music: by the way.

Sebastian Kwapich: I need to learn how to spell Mike.

Mandatory Music: Yeah, that spelling is an important thing. Apocalyptica. Okay, so let's see. Fe

Sebastian Kwapich: Maybe it's farewell.

Sebastian Kwapich: Sorry, it's farewell,…

Sebastian Kwapich: not funeral.

Mandatory Music: Okay. Okay.

Sebastian Kwapich: It's so good.

Mandatory Music: Let me see if I can spell.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, It's called Farewell. I don't know why I said funeral, but

Mandatory Music: I will. Okay. yeah. Yeah, I got a new keyboard, dude. It's really small and my fingers are really fat, but it's wireless cuz I wanted a wireless keyboard. and I'm having trouble typing on it. Yeah. …

Sebastian Kwapich: tiny keyboard.

Mandatory Music: tiny keyboard. yeah. keep your eyes open if there's any fun shows at the Commodore Ballroom,…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, I was just looking at that right now or

Mandatory Music: something like that. cuz I am totally into coming down and just to Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: Mike and I used to go to a couple concerts a year at the Commodore basically.

Mandatory Music: Especially even before I moved away, it was everything like no matter what rock band was coming.

Sebastian Kwapich: I mean, Carrie King is coming out the 20th of J.

Mandatory Music: No, I'm good. but kudos to him for keeping going. I think that's pretty cool.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, cuz Slayer's done.

Mandatory Music: They're done. Yeah. and I'm glad it happened last year and…

Sebastian Kwapich: That's big news. that actually happened last year in 20 they called it quits.

Mandatory Music: nobody and funny enough nobody cared this.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. …

Mandatory Music: But again, it's there at an age their singer didn't want to sing anymore.

Sebastian Kwapich: April 1st.

Mandatory Music: Is this a joke?

Sebastian Kwapich: No, April 1st.

Sebastian Kwapich: I don't know if you'd be down to see them, but April 1st in Flames is at the Commodore Ballroom.

Mandatory Music: That'd be like going back old days with you and me. We went side in flames 10,000 years ago.

Sebastian Kwapich: I'm saying they're here. So, …

Mandatory Music: Let me listen to some newer music of theirs and I'll get back to you on that.

Sebastian Kwapich: Jack White is here in May,…

Mandatory Music: That'd be a good show.

Sebastian Kwapich:

Sebastian Kwapich: but I Yeah,…

Mandatory Music: I'm sure that's expensive.

Sebastian Kwapich: we can go see n Commodore.

Mandatory Music: Where's he playing? really?

Sebastian Kwapich: I'm just looking at the Commodore website. Yeah, Ninja Sex Party. I don't know…

Mandatory Music: I don't know what that is.

00:40:00

Sebastian Kwapich: what that is. it only has things listed to July 28th,…

Mandatory Music: That sounds fun.

Sebastian Kwapich: but yeah.

Mandatory Music: That sounds like a fun band, though. …

Sebastian Kwapich: Five alarm funk transferan nation.

Mandatory Music: interesting. I was listening to a monster truck.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, the damned monster truck's good.

Mandatory Music: Was it that who I listen to? Yeah, they're cool. I have just some random rock playlist and it was all like we went down to the city the other day and it was just a random I don't like modern rock very much but I'm trying to be a better person and I'm trying to open my mind to more than just three different bands and there was all sorts of interesting stuff but there's this one I don't know if I can find it but that one monster truck song really stuck out to me. I'm like this is really good. So, I think I'm gonna start digging more into modern music. But, okay, let me ask you this.

Sebastian Kwapich: ask away.

Mandatory Music: What are you looking for from this podcast this year? What are you looking forward to? what are you?

Sebastian Kwapich: I want to just continue exploring music on a deeper level. I would like to go back and break into songs and break them open and…

Mandatory Music: Yes, let's do that. Okay.

Sebastian Kwapich: really deep dive them. that's good. and album releases. If there's an interesting album that's been released, do that. That's kind of the vein of…

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: where I envision it. What about yourself?

Mandatory Music: It's pretty much along those lines we've really gotten away from the breaking down of songs like he did with Sleep Token, stuff like that. And I kind of like I miss that.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: I kind of want to get back into that again and we can, whether we do blocks of a band or just pick a song a week. But I'd really like to get back into doing that again because that's a lot of fun because it takes a lot of work,…

Sebastian Kwapich: You heard it here first, folks. Yeah.

Mandatory Music: It takes you really have to listen. you got to digest it and you got to put the work in to get the song as opposed to like I'm not saying…

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. It's just a lot of work goes into researching songs and…

Mandatory Music: what we've been doing lately is It hasn't bad. it

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Mhm.

Sebastian Kwapich: repeatedly listening to them, making notes, dissecting it like Mike said,…

Mandatory Music: Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: you have to really focus on a song over and over and over again, which is fine,…

Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah.

Sebastian Kwapich: But there's so many songs.

Mandatory Music: Absolutely. there's a lot of songs out there. So, I think we are probably just about done for the evening.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yep.

Mandatory Music: We've been talking for a long time and yeah, we don't want to bore you any longer. So, look forward to what we want to do this year. We have no plans of stopping cuz I really love doing this. it's so much fun. we're going to keep going and,…

Sebastian Kwapich: We are going to keep going.

Mandatory Music: hopefully more people will hop on the ride and be there with us and listen and, enjoy what we have to talk about. So, maybe next week we're going to break something down. I'm gonna leave that in Seb's court to tell me what to break down. So, it's all on you,…

Sebastian Kwapich: Okay, we'll work on a song next week then.

Mandatory Music: you tell me…

Sebastian Kwapich: We got this.

Mandatory Music: what to do. We got it.

Sebastian Kwapich: Okay, same.

Mandatory Music: So, we will be back new year. Happy 2025. I hope everything goes everybody's way they wanted to. I know I've got lofty goals. I'm working on a lot of things personally. So, this is going to be one hell of a year.

Sebastian Kwapich: Looking forward to it.

Mandatory Music: It's going to be an amazing year. So, looking forward to it.

Sebastian Kwapich: Started off with a cold plunge.

Mandatory Music: See you.

Sebastian Kwapich: Let's go.

Mandatory Music: Absolutely. But we'll be back next week.

Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. See you.
