Mandatory Music: Hang on. Let's just do this and then we'll do this. Start recording.
Sebastian Kwapich: Welcome back to Mandatory Music.
Sebastian Kwapich: And we got a bit of a special situation happening today where we're doing a song that I have probably listened to more than I probably should have in the last week and Mike has listened to about 30 seconds of it. So, we're going to do a blind reaction on Mike's end here.
Mandatory Music: 30 seconds.
Mandatory Music: That's it.
Sebastian Kwapich: So, Pussifer is a band that I know of but haven't really listened to and I'm not even sure why because it's a tool.
Sebastian Kwapich: It's a Maynard project. So he has Tulle is where he started. Pussifer is kind of like his for lack of better words, it's more like indie folk rock acoustic band and…
Mandatory Music: Yes. Yeah.
Mandatory Music: That's kind of the gist I get out of it,…
Sebastian Kwapich: then a perfect Yeah.
Mandatory Music: too, right?
Sebastian Kwapich: And then Pifer or sorry a perfect circle is his third band. but this started off as a creative subconscious band and…
Mandatory Music: Yes. …
Sebastian Kwapich: he was the only permanent member until most recently. Now it's like an actual band.
Mandatory Music: so it's a legit ban now.
Sebastian Kwapich: It's a legit band now.
Mandatory Music: Okay.
Sebastian Kwapich: So, there's a song that came on my Discover Weekly. For those that don't know, Spotify gives you a playlist once once a week and it came on and I immediately fell in love with it. But before that, first of all, Mike, how are you?
Mandatory Music: I'm good. it's all good.
Sebastian Kwapich: Let's do introductions here because I'm so ready to go.
Mandatory Music: You are very ready to go. So, I've had a week to listen to this and…
Mandatory Music: I think middle of the week I'm like, what? I'm not going to listen to this at all and we'll wait. Maybe we'll just play it and then we'll talk about it. And yeah, so I know who Pifer is.
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, it's same.
Mandatory Music: Obviously I love Perfect Circle. I love Tulle. I've never listened to one song by these guys ever. I don't know. it Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: For whatever reason, it never fell into my circle and…
Mandatory Music:
Mandatory Music: It's It's not tulle and okay, perfect circle is an offshoot of tool. And if it's not any of those two, I was out. I was like, I don't even care.
Sebastian Kwapich: So, I did a bit of research and I'll just give you a little bit of a preamble or…
Mandatory Music: Please. Okay. Okay.
Sebastian Kwapich: a little setup for this, but apparently Maynard was very close to his mother and he's an only child and his mother passed away within the last 10 years or so.
Sebastian Kwapich: This might have been written before she passed because this was off their first album that they've done,…
Sebastian Kwapich: but just keep that in mind that he's very connected to his mom.
Mandatory Music: Yep. Okay.
Mandatory Music: Okay. Mama said,…
Sebastian Kwapich: And the song's called Mama Said, but it's spelled S E D.
Mandatory Music: "Yeah, let's do it." Yes.
Sebastian Kwapich: Take that as you will. I'm not sure. but yeah, do you want to just roll through it? it's a short song based on what we normally do because we normally do 11 minute songs.
Mandatory Music: Yes. Right. This is the polar opposite of last week.
Sebastian Kwapich: So, it is Yeah.
Mandatory Music: So this song's 3 minutes and 31 seconds. We're going to watch the actual video. So, …
Mandatory Music:
Sebastian Kwapich: You guys aren't…
Sebastian Kwapich: because you're listening to this probably, but yeah.
Mandatory Music: true true that you guys, I'm sorry, but you're not. But if you want, just go to YouTube, look up Mama Sad, official video, and it's by there.
Sebastian Kwapich: By Pifer,…
Mandatory Music: So, I guess without further ado,…
Sebastian Kwapich: just play the whole thing. Yeah.
Mandatory Music: let's do this, and then, yeah.
Mandatory Music: It's like country tool.
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Change it with your pride son of mine.
Mandatory Music: Feels like something that could be written on a porch with some beers,…
Sebastian Kwapich: Mhm. What a drop.
Mandatory Music: right? …
Mandatory Music's Presentation: The storm is blowing up your horizon.
Mandatory Music: what a cool chorus.
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Keep your night.
Mandatory Music: Yeah, that's a level up there.
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Take the high road.
Sebastian Kwapich: the harmonies,…
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Take it like a man.
Sebastian Kwapich: …
Mandatory Music: Yeah. Who's the female vocalist in the behind singing with him?
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Listen up son of mine.
Sebastian Kwapich: I knew that at one point, in my research, but it's escaping me right now.
Mandatory Music: Okay, we'll figure it out after.
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Mama got to tell you all about growing pains.
Mandatory Music: And the imagery of the video is simple. He's in the desert. There's cactuses. It's raining now. There's thunder. He's walking with his,…
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Life will pound away…
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. He owns wines,…
Mandatory Music: his standard cowboy hat, sunglasses, and a gun,…
Mandatory Music's Presentation: where the light don't shine.
Mandatory Music: Of course he has a wine bottle cuz he is a vinter.
00:05:00
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Take it like a man. Suck it up.
Sebastian Kwapich: doesn't he?
Mandatory Music: Yeah, he owns a winery.
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Angels come. Keep your dignity.
Mandatory Music: It has a real feel of what I've been listening to lately with all the indigenous music.
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Take the high road.
Sebastian Kwapich: Definitely has Yeah,…
Mandatory Music: I all the European indigenous music. Yeah, totally.
Mandatory Music's Presentation: Take it like a man. It's just a broken heart.
Mandatory Music: So many layers of vocals if you listen really close.
Sebastian Kwapich: it's definitely d. Voices are doubled and there's so much there.
Mandatory Music: Because there's a higher octave of Maynard in there.
Mandatory Music's Presentation: This pain will pass away.
Sebastian Kwapich: Yep. Yeah.
Mandatory Music: Very deep.
Sebastian Kwapich: It's also quite low in his register for…
Mandatory Music: Yes. That's not the name.
Sebastian Kwapich: what you're normally used to.
Mandatory Music: That's not the main we're used to.
Sebastian Kwapich: No, because you're used to him singing in much higher in high registers for tool for sure in perfect circle.
Mandatory Music: Mhm. Absolutely.
Mandatory Music: and saw hands flare into the sun. Cool. I thought that was awesome…
Sebastian Kwapich: Short song.
Sebastian Kwapich: What do you think?
Mandatory Music: because yeah, like I was saying what it was on I've been listening to a lot of sort of Eastern European indigenous tribal music lately and…
Sebastian Kwapich: Music. Yeah.
Mandatory Music: that is very much in the same vibe but just sort of like an American version of it but very much so. it's neat. there's two parts of the song. It's as simple as it gets.
Mandatory Music:
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, but the complexity in…
Sebastian Kwapich: what Maynard does as a master songwriter is he's such a amazing progressive songwriter.
Sebastian Kwapich: And when you listen to progressive music there's usually a theme that people will or…
Mandatory Music: Mhm. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: the artist will layer things on top and it starts with a simple guitar line with the drums.
Sebastian Kwapich: The bass comes in the layers start coming in as the verse goes through. It's never the same thing twice in terms of the main guitar rift is pretty simple. but it adds layers and layers and layers and then the payoff is in the chorus. this is a masterful way of getting to resolution in a chorus.
Mandatory Music: Mhm. Yes.
Mandatory Music: Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: And when that chorus hits, you're left with such a satisfying feeling.
Mandatory Music: Mhm. Yep.
Sebastian Kwapich: You're just like, I'm in this. Let's go. so I think this song is incredible from a songwriting standpoint and…
Mandatory Music: Yeah. yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: just what it does to my feels. it just punches me right in my feels.
Mandatory Music: Yep. Absolutely.
Sebastian Kwapich: .
Mandatory Music: Even if you look at the lyrics like verse one is wake up son of mine. Mama got something to tell you.
Sebastian Kwapich: Yep.
Mandatory Music: Changees come. Life will have its way with your pride son. Take it like a man. So, she's basically telling him, life's going to kick your ass, right? And Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: You're going to take it like a man. don't complain or…
Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: b** about it. Take it like a man and just stand up,…
Mandatory Music: And then I think she's putting so there's some hope in this is…
Sebastian Kwapich: …
Mandatory Music: what the precourse is. Hang on, son of mine. A storm is blowing up your horizon. which maybe you can take that in and…
Sebastian Kwapich: you can take that in many ways,…
Mandatory Music: you can take that in a few ways…
Sebastian Kwapich: I guess.
Mandatory Music: but if you take it in from what the first verse was with this sort of okay you're going to get prepared prepare yourself to get beat that's your life you're going to get beat and now it's hang on there's a storm's coming but it's going to pass and then change has come this the chorus changes come Yes.
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. So, the storm has hit and you're
Sebastian Kwapich: You're in the thing. and she's telling you change is going to keep going. Basically, like a man.
Mandatory Music: Yeah.
Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah. Changes Keep your dignity. Take the high road. Take it like a man.
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. I just want to highlight the lyrical content of this.
Mandatory Music: Yes. So Mhm.
Sebastian Kwapich: Not just the lyrical, but the vocal melody lines. So, the verse is very staccato where he's like d and it kind of plays with the guitar line the same way. And when it gets to the chorus, everything opens up in this coral sound.
Mandatory Music: Mhm. Yes.
Sebastian Kwapich: And he just lingers on every syllable to allow the harmonies of the female singer of his dubbed octave higher. And it just rings out in this coral sound. it is such a masterful way of getting to that chorus.
Sebastian Kwapich: So yeah, I think the song Is absolutely incredible from so many different layers and…
Mandatory Music: It really is. It's
00:10:00
Sebastian Kwapich: it's a lesson in what you can do with simplicity if you just add a little bit of layers and a little bit of texture with the different instruments. ass itself, when that bass hits early on, it's so man. so thick and it's easy to play. It's like there's nothing to this song in terms of you don't need to play fast and technical and…
Mandatory Music: No. …
Sebastian Kwapich: you don't need that math metal where it's just a simple lyrical line. The production quality is awesome. I want that acoustic guitar that they're playing in this song…
Mandatory Music: yeah. …
Sebastian Kwapich: because that sounds amazing.
Mandatory Music: it really does.
Sebastian Kwapich: It absolutely sounds amazing.
Mandatory Music: I was kind of thinking when I was listening to the song that Do you think…
Mandatory Music: because it is so simple, it's clearly not a tool song, right? it's very different.
Sebastian Kwapich: No, it's a country song,…
Mandatory Music: But do you think Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: It's not country, but it's like a southern rock song, basically. But it's got that tool production value,…
Mandatory Music: I wonder if this. Yes. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: that later on tool production value where they really in 10,000 days in Fear and Oculum, they let that deep notes ring to give so much thickness to the sound.
Mandatory Music: Mhm. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: And this is what you can do. This is what bass does to a song when you produce it properly.
Mandatory Music: Yep. yeah. super simple on guitar.
Sebastian Kwapich: So yeah I believe it's an E flat actually is I or…
Mandatory Music:
Mandatory Music: I don't know if you can hear this. But yeah,…
Sebastian Kwapich: drop D. Yeah. Strongster is never right in terms of…
Mandatory Music: honestly I know I go to Ultimate Guitar it's pretty good.
Sebastian Kwapich: what key it's in. Anyways every time I look on it it tells me it's in this weird key. I'm just like it's probably not.
Sebastian Kwapich: So yeah,…
Mandatory Music: A lot of the songs are just transcribed by people. I know we're getting off a little bit here, but if you want a good place to go, it'll give you really a good baseline of what's…
Sebastian Kwapich: that's Yeah,…
Mandatory Music: what and then you can sort of just figure out the rest yourself. I do that a lot. I'll just go on here. Okay, I play whatever. And it's like, that's not quite right. But then you kind of figure out, okay, this is where they made the mistake but there is official tabs in here, too. I think you have to get the …
Sebastian Kwapich: it's been dad gab.
Mandatory Music: it's in dead. Yeah, exactly.
Sebastian Kwapich: Bad dad bad and…
Mandatory Music: But super simple riff for the main. And then even the chorus is It's got a G sharp in it. The only difference.
Sebastian Kwapich: it's also got a female voice in it too which just adds a bit of a higherend sound to it.
Mandatory Music: Yeah. yeah. Do you know No,…
Sebastian Kwapich: So is someone I have immediately just started to dive into. we listen to so much music. There's so much to listen to. So I've listened to the first album. I'm going to get into the other albums when I can, but I don't know. I can't even explain to you why I've never listened to Pussifer because I'm a massive Tool fan.
Mandatory Music: that's right.
Sebastian Kwapich: It's something odd that I don't understand why I haven't done it.
Mandatory Music: Maybe for me I might have met the point okay can you just stick with okay you got tulle and…
Sebastian Kwapich: …
Mandatory Music: and you don't put albums out then you're starting to put out perfect circle and now you have another band and then the main band suffers for that kind of it's fascinating we're there no words on Yeah words Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: but here's the fascinating thing, and I got to stop saying fascinating, but here we are. Anyways, so Maynor doesn't write any of the music for Tulle, as far as I'm aware. He's just as the lyrics and it's the three other guys that are the primary tool creators of how the song does.
Mandatory Music: Yes. Mhm.
Sebastian Kwapich: And so I believe I have heard this in an interview where they will quite literally give him the song and he's like, "Okay, figure out where the lyrics go." Yeah.
Mandatory Music: I was just going to say as far as I've known and read and all the lore is they finish the song and then they send it to Mayor saying here you go, it's done. Put lyrics to it…
Sebastian Kwapich: So, I am curious to see…
Mandatory Music: however you want. Which is weird.
Sebastian Kwapich: if Pussifer is the same way or if he is involved in the actual writing of the music part or the themes of the song or, if he helps construct everything of it instead of just going in with the whole song done as they do in Tulle and goes, "Okay, I'm going to put the lyrics in here." So, no, there you go.
Mandatory Music: from Wolver Hampton. that's unfortunate.
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, the Wolves just lost this morning
Sebastian Kwapich: They played Chelsea, lost 2-1. For all of you EPL soccer fans,…
Mandatory Music: Absolutely. There you go.
Sebastian Kwapich: there you go.
Mandatory Music: And other musicians in the song include Matt Mitchell. Don't know who that is. Paul Barker, Masa Zar Zarin, and Jeff Fredel. So yeah,…
Sebastian Kwapich: Jeff.
Mandatory Music:
Mandatory Music: …
Sebastian Kwapich: No.
Mandatory Music:
Mandatory Music: I don't know. we could deep dive these guys if we want, but we're probably okay. but there Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, I just can't get over how good that acoustic guitar sounds in this song.
Mandatory Music: And it's so simp and…
Sebastian Kwapich: It's so Yeah. Yep.
Mandatory Music: it's so simple, too. It's And we talked about before, we decided to do this. we were talking about last week. Mama said it was written by Johnny Palonsky, Tim Cmerford, and Brad Wilk from Raids Against the Machine and Maynard. So, it's an interesting group having Cumberford and…
00:15:00
Mandatory Music: Wilk, but they're groovy guys. They don't need to play the loud rage against Machine stuff all the time. They're great a great backend band. Audio slave is a perfect example of that. So,
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. this fits my musical pallet today in today's times be so perfectly…
Mandatory Music: Yep. Mhm.
Sebastian Kwapich: because I like music that's layered and that has elements that are introduced. I don't like a one riff song where they just play the riff over and over and over again.
Mandatory Music: Yeah. But there's Yes.
Sebastian Kwapich: this has that, but there's a different taste every time.
Mandatory Music: And there's stuffs weaved in and out of that.
Sebastian Kwapich: There's subtle layers that come in as you go through the recurring riff line,…
Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: which gives it a different flavor. Right?
Mandatory Music: Absolutely. Sure.
Sebastian Kwapich: So, if the one takeaway from this that I want everyone to understand where I'm coming from is how you can make incredibly beautiful music with such a simple melody line by just adding layers to it and…
Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yep.
Sebastian Kwapich: texture to it and introducing other instruments that all fit well together.
Mandatory Music: Yeah, absolutely.
Sebastian Kwapich: It's a craft like doing that is people try their entire lives to write songs like this and they can't…
Mandatory Music: And it gives you the as Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: because you have to see this vision, …
Mandatory Music: And as you said, And if it gives you the feels, that means something was done incredibly right.
Sebastian Kwapich: immediately the first time I Yeah.
Mandatory Music: If it gives you the feels or the chills, if a song does that to you,…
Sebastian Kwapich: punches you right in the heart.
Mandatory Music:
Mandatory Music: …
Sebastian Kwapich: Boom. Yep.
Mandatory Music: And I'd be willing to bet this was written probably pretty quick. I would hazard a guess because a lot of the great songs were just kind of like, okay, …
Mandatory Music: here's this and then, okay, we'll put this, and this, and this, and boom, you're done. And it's a work of art. And yeah, it's Yep.
Sebastian Kwapich: But that is next level thinking too.
Sebastian Kwapich: We have all heard the stories. Aussie Osborne's really good at recognizing something that could possibly be turned into magic. Lars Alrich is the same way.
Mandatory Music: Yeah,…
Sebastian Kwapich: He listened to the Kirk Hammet doodle of Inner Sandman and he's like, play it differently. Play this way and then that way." and…
Mandatory Music: it's great.
Sebastian Kwapich: they changed it and it became one of their most iconic riffs that they've ever created. Right? So,…
Mandatory Music: Yeah, for sure.
Sebastian Kwapich: it takes this mind that can go beyond what you're hearing as a simple riff and really go down this path in your mind of where could we go with this riff?
Mandatory Music: Yeah. Mhm.
Sebastian Kwapich: And they see something special in it. And Maynard is like that.
Sebastian Kwapich: He has this ability to see something otherworldly in elements of music that he hears and constructing He's proven that with perfect circle. He's proven that with this song in my mind.
Mandatory Music: Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: So I am just in awe of people that can see the long picture of just and I guarantee you it was probably this one little riff that they heard and he's like, "Yeah, that's something. let's dig into that.
Mandatory Music: It was probably the main riff. See if I don't screw it up.
Mandatory Music: But it's super simple but it's catchy and it works and it all.
Sebastian Kwapich: So it's very simple.
Sebastian Kwapich: And of course you need the production value of it too, they definitely were going after a certain sound.
Mandatory Music: Yeah. Mhm.
Sebastian Kwapich: This song they wanted to sound like you said somebody on a p on a porch in the Midwest or…
Mandatory Music: Yeah. or…
Sebastian Kwapich: the southern states playing acoustic guitar.
Mandatory Music: the video showed the guy walking through the desert and that's kind of Yeah,…
Sebastian Kwapich: But I don't listen to a lot of country. I know that your wife does,…
Mandatory Music: I've been dabbling a little bit here and…
Sebastian Kwapich: and…
Mandatory Music: there. Yeah,…
Sebastian Kwapich: I could be ignorant in saying this, but I don't feel a lot of country has that deep bass resonance as this song does. it's higher on the register. It's more twangy,…
Mandatory Music: most things I've Yeah,…
Sebastian Kwapich: for lack of better words. Yeah.
Mandatory Music: a lot of the stuff I've listened to lately is it's higher up and it depends on who's singing it or…
Sebastian Kwapich: So, this song is a mood and…
Mandatory Music: what. But yeah, no, you're totally right. that song it's full.
Sebastian Kwapich: a groove.
Mandatory Music:
Mandatory Music: It is. Yeah. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: There's a specific mood that they go after in this song. So, yeah. I'm fine.
Mandatory Music: Yeah. here we go. I thought you were over the cough. I guess so Seb still got his whooping cough from two months ago now, but that's okay. He's back and he's unmuted himself. he's good to go.
Sebastian Kwapich: I'm fine. It's fine.
00:20:00
Mandatory Music: So we haven't done something like this…
Sebastian Kwapich: Everything's fine.
Mandatory Music: since we did the Sleep Token stuff, which was…
Sebastian Kwapich: It's true.
Mandatory Music:
Mandatory Music: which was this was a lot of fun. I'd like to do more of this. I'm probably going to pick a song for you next week and…
Mandatory Music: maybe we'll do the same thing again next week with something. yes,…
Sebastian Kwapich: Okay, it's my turn to not listen to a song.
Sebastian Kwapich: Let's go.
Mandatory Music: it's maybe I won't tell you until we do it.
Sebastian Kwapich: Five minutes before we're going live.
Mandatory Music: Until you see the screen share. it's that. Okay. I'm going to do that. And it's not going to be something stupid.
Sebastian Kwapich: Okay, Mike.
Mandatory Music: It's not going to be something silly. It'll be something worth your listen. It'll be something in English. I won't give you any tribal music because it's tough.
Sebastian Kwapich: Mike had me listening to Mongolian throat singing…
Mandatory Music: I did.
Sebastian Kwapich: which is fascinating by the way.
Mandatory Music: Good.
Sebastian Kwapich: So not you
Mandatory Music: And even Waruna, they're they are absolutely amazing. And their videos are actually same with that one we watched by I can't remember what their names are. They're Siberian. But Worduna that all their lyrics are subtitled so you get a gist. I'm sure it's a loose translation of what's going on. But no, but next week we're gonna do something fun. We're going to be dipping more to modern music not classic bands,…
Mandatory Music: not old music. We're going to do stuff and we're going to do something that was released in it all depends.
Sebastian Kwapich: Or maybe we'll not.
Sebastian Kwapich: It all depends.
Mandatory Music: But next week we're going to do something that already been released just came out this year.
Sebastian Kwapich: If people haven't figured this out by now,…
Mandatory Music: So all the time.
Sebastian Kwapich: Mike changes his mind all the time. It'll be five minutes later he'll be like, "Okay, we're going to do this." Then 10 minutes later,…
Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: just We're going to do this. But it's fine.
Sebastian Kwapich: It's why we love him. Is it the one that we talked about?
Mandatory Music: That's why That's…
Mandatory Music: why you love me. And No, but We'll do something good. It's going to be grooving. think I have an idea. I know the artist already. I got to find the right song. I don't know what you're talking about.
Sebastian Kwapich: Yes, it is. Okay. you'll have to tune in next week,…
Mandatory Music: Maybe I'll have to change it now.
Sebastian Kwapich: guys. All right.
Mandatory Music: Or maybe I'll just say I'm changing it and not. But No.
Sebastian Kwapich: That's fair. Yeah.
Mandatory Music: Yeah. So, that's Pifer Mama, which now I have to dig into their catalog. I think that's going to consume a lot of my week this week.
Mandatory Music: Is listening to them…
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. Yeah.
Mandatory Music: because I hope most of their music kind of sounds like that, But I kind of hope it's kind of in that sort of dream state, sort of moody, broody, right?
Sebastian Kwapich: It is very dreamlike now that you said it and…
Mandatory Music: Yeah. I was just going to say he was…
Sebastian Kwapich: and saying that resonates with what he originally said that it was supposed to be a reflection of his consciousness the music. So yes,…
Mandatory Music: because the lyrics are a stream of conscious he's reflecting on his childhood with his mom telling him stuff and then this song is the soundtrack to that memory which that's totally what I got out of listening to it and…
Sebastian Kwapich: yeah. So yeah,…
Mandatory Music: reading the lyrics together. I'm like, " this is really neat.
Sebastian Kwapich: so from the Wikipedia page, Pussifur is an American rock group formed in Los Angeles by Mayor James Keenan and…
Sebastian Kwapich: was lead singer of the band Tool and Perfect Circle.
Sebastian Kwapich: Initially Kenan was the only permanent member and as such he considered the project to be his creative subconscious. Later frequent collaborators Matt Mitchell and Karina Round became permanent members. So it's not much more to say about the song. It's very simple. It's very good.
Mandatory Music: There you go.
Mandatory Music: Yeah, it is very good. And if you're Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: I might be biased but man does this live rent free in my head right now. This song Yeah,…
Mandatory Music: And not even in a mood, if you want to get into a dreamy kind of reflective mood that's not, spa music, this is a perfect alternative that got The only thing I was kind of hoping with it,…
Sebastian Kwapich: it's good.
Mandatory Music: there might have been a progression in not aggressiveness, but it would sort of kick into another gear, but that wasn't the point of the song was streaming conscious and…
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah, it's all the same piece.
Mandatory Music: and then the memor is gone, right? It's just okay, I reflected,…
Mandatory Music: the song's out, and I'm done. That's it's a journey in a different way.
Sebastian Kwapich: That's actually a very fascinating thing that you've just said…
Sebastian Kwapich: though because if it is a stream of consciousness or a dream often we…
Mandatory Music: Mhm. Yes.
Sebastian Kwapich: because it kind of abruptly ends and that is very reflective of a lot of memories or…
Mandatory Music: We just Yep.
Sebastian Kwapich: when you wake up and…
Mandatory Music: Yeah. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: you're like living in this dream space of what you just dreamed and then it's gone.
Mandatory Music: Yep. Absolutely.
Sebastian Kwapich: So that's a very interesting correlation to put to…
Mandatory Music: Mhm. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: how this three minute song is because you're living in the space and then yeah also that yeah he
Mandatory Music: Or he could have even been daydreaming and then He just looks off into the sky. It's like, " yeah, right." And then you think about that and then the lyrics probably just barfed out of himself and then onto a piece of paper, which I'm assuming it's a piece of paper.
Sebastian Kwapich: I'll leave you this with this one last parting comment. I was watching an interview with Maynard, and they were talking about lyrics, right? And he's like, I never really hear the lyrics when I listen to a song for the first time, but bad lyrics will absolutely take you out of a song once you actually study the lyrics and you're like, what is this garbage I'm actually reading? So, it's an interesting thing, right? because I hear the melodies and…
00:25:00
Sebastian Kwapich: the vocal lines but I don't know what they're saying. I literally will have to take a lot of focus to actually listen to the words…
Mandatory Music: No. Yeah.
Mandatory Music: Yep. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: because the words don't mean I shouldn't say they don't mean anything. They do obviously they do. Lyrics are very important…
Mandatory Music: Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: but I don't actually get what the lyrical content is listening to a song most songs…
Mandatory Music: No. Yeah.
Sebastian Kwapich: until I deep dive the lyrics afterwards.
Sebastian Kwapich: And I know we've talked about that before in a previous podcast.
Mandatory Music: Absolutely. Yep.
Sebastian Kwapich: So, it's just fascinating to listen to Mayor saying …
Mandatory Music: Mhm. Yep.
Sebastian Kwapich: "Yeah, there'll be these lyric lines and vocal melody lines that I'm really into, and then I go and research the lyrics. I'm like, this is what are they even saying?" And it takes you completely out of the song.
Mandatory Music: Takes you out of it and…
Sebastian Kwapich: So, yeah.
Mandatory Music: you're like, okay. That's what they were talking about. Great. I'm not interested anymore." And I'm not a lyric guy. I can appreciate a good melody, but I have to look at them and read them as the song is going. I'm like, "Oh, okay." Like I did with this, I just pulled them up. I'm like, " okay. then I get it." Well,…
Sebastian Kwapich: I think that's rooted in the fact that we were born out of metal music basically, right? And that's very music driven, not lyric driven.
Mandatory Music: yeah. and…
Sebastian Kwapich: So, no.
Mandatory Music: and yeah, the words and the voices like if you're trying to groove to know even if you're a Slayer fan you're not there for the deep lyrics or Megade even whatever flow like whatever metal band you like Panta even is like I don't…
Mandatory Music: what the hell he's saying I'm like whatever walk that's amazing look at us that was even planned so on that note I think we're done for the evening That was fun.
Sebastian Kwapich: Hey, respect.
Sebastian Kwapich: My god, we just thought of the same song at the same time. No, it was not. Yes, sir.
Mandatory Music: I enjoy doing that.
Sebastian Kwapich: Put this on your playlist and…
Mandatory Music: We are.
Sebastian Kwapich: everyone else listening to it,…
Mandatory Music: Yes, it's going on.
Sebastian Kwapich: put this on a place. This is a fantastic song.
Mandatory Music: The whole album is going on a playlist tomorrow. I'm going to do one album a day.
Sebastian Kwapich: They have a bunch,…
Mandatory Music: I don't know how many albums they have. Looks like they have four or five or…
Sebastian Kwapich: I think.
Mandatory Music: let's see here. They do. my god.
Sebastian Kwapich: They have more than two.
Mandatory Music: What? yes, they do. Okay. They have a lot. That's Okay.
Sebastian Kwapich: Yeah. …
Mandatory Music: Maybe I'll start with the mo most recent one and work my way backwards…
Sebastian Kwapich: Mike is an odd individual,…
Mandatory Music: because I'm different and I have to be different than everybody. So, I'm an oddball.
Sebastian Kwapich: that's for sure.
Mandatory Music: So, next week we'll be back with some modern rock. I'll just leave you with that. Modern rock. Perfect. And yeah, we will see you on the old Flippy flop.
Sebastian Kwapich: Perfect. Let's do it on the flipflop.
Sebastian Kwapich: Okay.
Mandatory Music: Okay. Bye-bye.
