@0:00 - Sebastian

Good evening.

@0:01 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Hi. Hi, Seb. How are you?

@0:04 - Sebastian

Very good, thank you.

@0:05 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

This is the Mandatory Music Megapod.

@0:07 - Sebastian

I see what did there.

@0:09 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

A little alliteration, kind of. Yeah.

@0:11 - Sebastian

The Arsenal of Megadeth.

@0:13 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

January 23rd, 2026, Megadeth released the self-titled album, Megadeth. Yep.

@0:22 - Sebastian

Also known as the White Album.

@0:24 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I wouldn't go that far calling it the White Album because there is only one White Album.

@0:28 - Sebastian

The Beatles, I know.

@0:29 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yes. We can call it the...

@0:31 - Sebastian

Semi-White Album. The White Album on Fire. The...

@0:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, we'll call it the White Album on Fire. Why don't we do that? Okay, so before we dive deep, because I've been thinking about this all day.

@0:44 - Sebastian

Same.

@0:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Well, all weekend, really. Same. Ever since Thursday. Did you have any expectations? After this was announced, we heard Tipping Point.

What was your, like, oh man, I wonder, like, what does Sebastian want out of the is going to fun?

Final Megadeth record.

@1:01 - Sebastian

Can I be candid?

@1:02 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Please.

@1:04 - Sebastian

I would have hoped that they, I'm just going to say this, I would have hoped that they would take in a lot more time and care with each track, knowing that this was the last album, and I think that they failed in that regard.

@1:19 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I can understand where you're coming from.

@1:21 - Sebastian

I feel like it's a Megadeth album. That's it.

@1:30 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Because I listened, okay, I totally, I totally get that because I decided, because I didn't like Dystopia or The Sick, The Dying, and The Dead, because they were just, it was like they were trying too hard.

And I listened to The Sick, The Dying, and The Dead. And one thing, a couple of things I noticed, because this is probably going to lead into what you, exactly what you're talking about.

Each song on the last record had either, you know, I had a fun intro, had all sorts of extracurriculars.

It was super tight, and I I- I Dave has issues with his hands, and that's kind of where I'm thinking, where most of these riffs kind of came from, was a place of, this is about as good as it gets, kind of thing, but it's a very lean album, if you know what I mean, like there's not a lot of, like the songs are short, it's, like there's not a lot of, well we got like two thrash songs, realistically.

@2:26 - Sebastian

Yeah, it's little, it's a little subdued or slower in pace than I was expecting, like, especially like Let There Be Shred, it's, it's, it's fun.

That's the fastest song on the album, I think.

@2:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, I was born with a guitar, I came out with a guitar in my hand.

@2:40 - Sebastian

But it's not exactly egregiously fast, right?

@2:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's not.

@2:44 - Sebastian

Like, if you listen to the very first album, like, look at the BPM of the mechanics.

@2:48 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

probably out of, out of this world, it's probably.

@2:50 - Sebastian

well, I don't think you can physically play that anymore, right?

@2:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No. Well, that's why I think a lot of these songs, because it was funny, because I, when I, so the album dropped on Thursday night at 9.

So I was like, oh, sweet, new mega.

@3:01 - Sebastian

I didn't even realize that. And I'm like, why is everyone reviewing the album already? It's not until tomorrow. I'm like, did it get leaked or something?

@3:07 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm like, oh, apparently. So I laid on the couch, put my headphones in, noise cancelling headphones, and just turned it up loud.

I skipped tipping point. I don't care. And let there be shred because I've heard them all numerous times. So I started with Hey God.

@3:22 - Sebastian

Yes.

@3:23 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And I was just instantly I was like, whoa, like, this is like mid tempo. It's like, it's tame. It's like not a quick album.

No, and I was not like, oh, because I love I love me submit temple, Megadeth. I really do. And okay, so it's like, so I'm listening to Hey God, and I'm like, all right.

So and I really love was that puppet patrol, whatever it's called puppet parade. Right?

@3:45 - Sebastian

Damn it.

@3:46 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, I was thinking of patrol. So and then puppet parade. I was like, , puppet parades. Awesome.

@3:53 - Sebastian

Like, it's a good song. I don't mind that one bit.

@3:55 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's got like any because Dave singing is like, it's got like, it's no. There's 90s vibes all over this record.

@4:03 - Sebastian

It's very euthanasia-ish in that time period. Cryptic writing could have fit right in between those two.

@4:09 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's in that era.

@4:11 - Sebastian

This whole album screams of that era.

@4:13 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Do you think that was on purpose? Or do you think that is, like I said, a product of what Dave can do now?

@4:21 - Sebastian

Maybe.

@4:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Or a little of both?

@4:24 - Sebastian

Yeah, I don't know. There's nothing... Okay. It's a Megadeth album, like I said already. But there's nothing really that stands out and slaps you in the face, and you're like, whoa.

You know, it's fine.

@4:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Two songs really slap me in the face, but that's about it.

@4:41 - Sebastian

Well, one slapped me in the face for the exact opposite reason, but...

@4:45 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

We'll get to the bonus track later. Yeah. Yeah, we'll get there. We'll get to the bonus track. But... I...

Like, I've listened to the record probably 15 times. Maybe more. I don't know. It's been on all the time.

know. I don't I objected my wife and kids to it. They're like, can you turn this garbage off?

@5:03 - Sebastian

I can't stand to sing it. Can you just turn it off, please?

@5:06 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Pretty much. And I just, there's some good moments, but I think you're totally right. I don't think there was the time put into some of these songs, because some of them were just like, like the intro is very generic, like, what song is that?

But some are just like generic intros, and all of a sudden, boom, song starts.

@5:28 - Sebastian

You're like, what?

@5:28 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like, this isn't, this isn't, like, kind of reminds me of Super Collider. And as much as I love Super Collider, I love Super Collider.

think it's great.

@5:37 - Sebastian

But that's like one of the worst albums. If you look at like Megadeth rankings, a lot of people rank it as the worst album.

@5:45 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Well, a lot of people are saying this is, this is, well, risk is the worst by far. Risk stinks.

And this is nowhere near risk. I was, it's funny, because...

@5:54 - Sebastian

No, I would, I would place this album, like, smack in the middle of their catalog. Like, it's not the worst album.

It's definitely, but is it a rest in peace? Is it a euthanasia? Is it a peace cell?

@6:06 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I think this is better than euthanasia. Go back and listen to euthanasia again.

@6:10 - Sebastian

It doesn't hold much water. Yeah, well, I mean, that's one with true Le Monde on it, though, which is one of the most half of the record is great.

@6:16 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

The second half is just kind of like, whoa, like it kind of falls off a cliff. And to me, this doesn't fall off a cliff because like you say, it's just, it kind of just goes across the middle.

@6:26 - Sebastian

It's fine.

@6:26 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

There's no bad songs. There's no, I don't think there's filler, but they're all kind of, wow.

@6:33 - Sebastian

There is no bad song musically. Well, maybe the bonus track, maybe. Well, musically, it's fine. It's just fine. But where it falls off for me is that some of his lyrical choices and you're just like, you know, I read something somewhere.

like, did Dave hire a toddler to write the lyrics for this?

@6:52 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

You know what? Okay. Okay. So speaking of the lyrics, because some of the lyrics in these songs are kind of, you know, a little on the...

Ridiculous side.

@7:02 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@7:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

But I think that's part of the beauty of what Megadeth is, of like, you know, got Dave's really unique voice.

You got the lyrical content is sometimes not as good as some other songs. But I think this is probably one of the more personal records he wrote, because I think there's some biographical stuff going on in some of these songs.

Yeah. Especially, like, with the ones, we'll get to the last note.

@7:29 - Sebastian

We'll get there later. Yeah.

@7:31 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like, Hey God, I think he's actually, I think the lyrics he really tried. I really do. I think he gave it.

These are Dave Mustaine lyrics.

@7:42 - Sebastian

No one's going to say Dave Mustaine is a poet.

@7:45 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Yeah. And I kind of think his gravelly voice that, you know, people make fun of for the last 40 years, I think it's turned into one of those things where it's like, you know, there's, there's, like,

Let's play pool. Would you call him a good singer? No, he's very unique. He's very nasal. And I don't know, like, but I did notice a couple of songs are tuned down.

@8:10 - Sebastian

I think they all think they're all tuned down. Yeah, I think it's because of a vocal issue.

@8:14 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's a vocal issue. Like Obey the Call is like the most mega death, like countdown to extinction song. And it his voice is just, I cannot, honestly, I cannot get enough of Obey the Call.

That's the one of them that slapped me right in the face. So I was like, whoa, it's like Psychotron on steroids.

@8:32 - Sebastian

Yeah, there's a couple of songs that people aren't talking about that I actually like. So Another Bad Day, I like it.

Great song. It's a slower groove. It's like, it's pretty groovy.

@8:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I don't want to say it's like Enter Sand, Manny, but it's kind of in that same wheelhouse of tempo.

@8:50 - Sebastian

Yeah, just love all the shifts. So musically, it's great. And I think, so for me, a highlight of it is Timu.

@8:57 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like Timu's guitar playing is pretty great on it. Timu is awesome.

@8:59 - Sebastian

awesome. He can rock. So he left Wintersun to join Megadeth for this album and this tour. So I'm really curious to see where he lands after this, right?

@9:10 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Because this is a one-and-done album for him, I think, right? Yeah, I think so.

@9:14 - Sebastian

So is he going to go back to Wintersun, or is he going to start his own band?

@9:17 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I don't know. Which is kind of a shame, because I think the... because David and Timmy wrote a lot of this record together.

Yeah, he's got surprisingly a lot of credits. A lot of credits.

@9:27 - Sebastian

So I was very shocked at that, because I thought this is...

@9:29 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. He's kind of like that Marty Friedman kind of style. Like, he's got some blues in him, which I'm assuming all the bluesy stuff is him.

I don't think it's... no offense to David, I don't think that's Dave.

@9:40 - Sebastian

He adapted very well to fit the Megadeth style. So that shows you how much of an accomplished musician he is, because, you know, he comes from, I guess, Wintersun, for lack of better words, is probably like a power metal band, right?

Okay. I believe. And he goes from that into, like, a legitimate thrash band, right? Yep. Granted, Granted, this is a much...

@10:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Slower Thrash album than typical Megadeth stuff. Definitely not Thrash, that's for sure.

@10:05 - Sebastian

No. Yeah. So.

@10:08 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Except for the last half of Obey the Call.

@10:10 - Sebastian

Oh my god, it's so good. It's a good song.

@10:13 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. Oh, it just rips. It's, to me, that's the best song on the record. But it says that in the last note.

Those are the two that really got me.

@10:22 - Sebastian

Yeah, I think the last note is the best one. Having said that, it's not like, okay, I'm just going to talk about the last note real quick.

@10:28 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I guess we'll just get into it. Yeah, do it.

@10:30 - Sebastian

Yeah. I look at Metallica's last album, 72 Seasons, and the last song is In a Morata. And it's such a good last song.

And if that's the last song they ever wrote, that's a good, great song to go out on. I look at Iron Maiden's last record and the song Hell on Earth, and it's such an epic, amazing song.

And if that's the last song they ever wrote, that's a great song to go out on. And then I hear the last note, which is fine.

fine. But it's not on that level of Inner Morata or Hell on Earth. Not even close. I know what he's trying to say in it.

The lyrics are very introspective. Very introspective, very personal. I just think there's missed opportunities to really stretch out the song and really dive in.

And I'm like, let's just, if you're gonna put out a song called The Last Note, which is supposed to be the last song in your career, I think you need to put so much attention into it.

so much, you need to just like, I think they could have done more with it. I'll just say that.

I think it could have been explored a little bit deeper and like made more personal and really go, really sit down with what you're trying to create and go, okay, is this the best version of this riff?

Is this the best version of this, the combination notes that we can, if you're titling the song, the last note, you know,

So having said that, I think it's the best song on the album.

@12:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah.

@12:05 - Sebastian

For my mind. Sure.

@12:07 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So. Like, I don't disagree, but I think this is kind of, I think at this point, it's as good as it gets.

@12:16 - Sebastian

Yeah, maybe.

@12:17 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Right? Because this is like album 17, I think. I believe it's 17.

@12:21 - Sebastian

17th century album, yeah.

@12:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. That's a lot of songwriting.

@12:24 - Sebastian

A lot more than Metallica.

@12:25 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

A lot more than Metallica. And obviously quantity doesn't always mean more quality, but it's, I think, okay, let's just say there's 12 songs in every record, you write 17 times those by two, that's a lot of songs.

Yeah. And to try and make every song, you know, you obviously want to make every album better than the last one, which not any, and not every, any band can say every album's good, except if it'd be, you know, because every band has a stinker or two.

@12:57 - Sebastian

Well, let me ask you this.

@12:59 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Sure.

@12:59 - Sebastian

Sure. when you heard the last note, did you have the same feels as when you had Inna Mirada? No.

Did it blow you out of the water going like, wow, I need to listen to this immediately again? Because that's the reaction you had when you listened to Inna Mirada.

@13:14 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like you were completely sold on that song immediately. I was in a different headspace too, so kind of.

@13:19 - Sebastian

That has something to do with it for sure.

@13:21 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

But lyrics aside though, I love the music of that song first. First, before I, Inna Mirada, before I really, the lyrics hit home for me, right?

@13:35 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@13:37 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Inna Mirada, like my head exploded.

@13:40 - Sebastian

It's levels above. Yes. The last note.

@13:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Except for, not except for, I want to say and, like the final, his final, his final sentence where, you know, which I don't know if he's talking about Metallica or not.

You know, they gave me gold. They gave me a name. They Every, every deal was written in blood and fire.

This is my last will, final testament, my sneer. That is to me, that's a great line. Oh my God.

. Is that ever dead?

@14:10 - Sebastian

That is hype, but it's hyper personal too. Absolutely. So I do. So it's some of the best lyrics that he's written because it's, comes from a place of like deepness that affects him.

@14:24 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Right.

@14:24 - Sebastian

Yeah. Also, the one thing I love about the last note is the acoustic guitar in it. It's so good.

@14:30 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like that middle part reminds me of what was that song on Rust in Peace that had the tornado of souls or something, or one of them had that sort of little, in middle of it, right?

That nylon string break.

@14:41 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@14:41 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. So good. But yeah. Oh, something but a, and then at the end was 12 string.

@14:47 - Sebastian

Right.

@14:47 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. He's busted. it had that real good ring to it. But that, that last like minute of that song, it's like, it kind of gave me some Iron Maiden, like hell on earth feels.

And it, and it's when he starts talking with that voice. Cause Dave really needs to Start reading, like, short stories or children's stories in that voice, poetry or something, and just, like, put that out.

@15:06 - Sebastian

Maybe he'll, yeah.

@15:08 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Just, I don't know, or even have him tell ghost stories in that voice. That would be the coolest. Why not?

I think that'd be the sweetest thing ever. Because I kind of just, I want to, hold on, I want to see if I can get to, I don't have any volume on the thing.

I'm trying to figure out my life here. Oh, there we go.

@15:26 - Sebastian

Let's see. So, to be fair, okay. I know we're pretty hard on Dave in terms of his singing ability, but he did have throat cancer in 2019.

So that's massively going to affect your ability to sing.

@15:40 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Come on.

@15:42 - Sebastian

So, I mean, from what I read is, so he was diagnosed with throat cancer in June of 2019. He underwent 51 rounds of radiation and nine chemotherapy sessions, officially announcing he was 100% cancer-free in February of 2020, despite canceling most of his tour dates.

Let's me stay and continue to work on the album, The Sick, The Dying, and the He during his recovery.

Having said that, it's got to massively affect your ability to sing. So we shouldn't be too hard on him.

But my question is like, throughout your entire career, if you weren't going to focus on developing a vocal presence, because he was just like...

@16:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

He kind of did in the 90s, like with euthanasia and a little bit on cryptic writings, but that was about it, right?

@16:28 - Sebastian

He just... But you hear Dave's singing ability, and his vocal lines are like all the same. Yeah. It's all like...

He sings everything with a sneer, with like this attitude, with this fake voice, so to speak.

@16:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like, oh, I got to sing like this! Well, it's the Sweating Bullets guy, the Hello Me, Meet the Real Me guy.

Yeah. Like, I think that might have got trapped inside him, and he couldn't escape it, because it just turned into that.

@16:55 - Sebastian

And it's just, maybe he's his own meme. But it's a surface level way of singing. It's like you're not really connected, other than Puppet Parade, where he breaks out of that in the chorus.

@17:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

He sings a little bit, yeah. There's a couple, like, Obey the Call, he sings a bit. Another Bad Day, he tries to sing, but it's...

@17:09 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@17:10 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like, on, like, Sick to Dying and the Dead, it's, like, straight up thrash. There is no, there's hardly any mid-tempo.

@17:17 - Sebastian

It's so different.

@17:17 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's such a different album, man. Oh that record is, man, it's intense. Like, it's insane. It's actually, it's insane.

@17:23 - Sebastian

Like, how fast it is.

@17:24 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's like, holy doodles. And then you get three years later to this, and you're like, um, what? You know, and I'm not saying either one is bad.

Like, I'm, I prefer mid-tempo Megadeth.

@17:34 - Sebastian

That's just me.

@17:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I like your countdowns and your euthanasias and your cryptic writings. And, you know, like I said, Super Collider 13 and Endgame.

@17:41 - Sebastian

I love, I love those records. They're so good.

@17:43 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. There's some gems. Like, they're all, obviously, they're not great, but there's some, there's some gems in there. There's some riffs that are just, he's like, he's like in the, the Mount Rushmore of, like, heavy metal riff writers.

It's like, him and Heffield.

@17:58 - Sebastian

Well, okay, so let me ask you this.

@18:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Next question, is Dave a good songwriter? I think Dave's a better riff writer than he is a songwriter. But you could say the same about Hetfield though, because Hetfield is the same.

He's a riff guy, and then there's someone else to put the together.

@18:14 - Sebastian

I think we need to appreciate how good Lars Ulrich is.

@18:17 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And then Lars stirs the soup and puts the spices in the soup.

@18:21 - Sebastian

I think it's lost on a lot of people how good Lars is constructing songs. You know, like, Ozzy's the same way.

Ozzy's a fantastic song. Well, in the early parts of his career, he's a great songwriter. In the last half of his career, all of his songs just sounded exactly the same, right?

So songwriting is a massive talent that a lot of people don't realize is important, right?

@18:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like, is Dave a bad songwriter? Hell no. But, you know, it's like, it'd be like saying, most metal bands are kind of that way.

We just got a bunch of riffs. We just put them together. That's what heavy metal is. It's like, you know, you got the intro, and you got blahs, blahs, blahs,

And then you got more, blah, blah, blah. And then you slow down in the middle and then you go, you know, you go 10 times the speed.

@19:05 - Sebastian

Yeah. But the real craft in that is, is, is fitting it together like a puzzle to say, like, what kind of story are you trying to tell with this song?

How are you trying to evoke? Um, yeah, it's funny. It's like, we always go back to this, um, do you want to talk about the last track right now?

@19:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Or do you want to say that? Yeah, let's do it. Okay.

@19:29 - Sebastian

Musically, it's fine. It's great. And then he starts singing and you can, in my mind, it really exposes his lack of vocal ability when he does ride the lightning.

It's like, why would I listen to this version when I could just listen to the Metallica version? Because it's essentially exactly the same note for note for note for note.

@19:51 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Actually, I listened to them back to back because I hadn't listened to ride lightning in a while.

@19:55 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@19:55 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And funny enough, the solos are longer on the Metallica version.

@19:59 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@20:01 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And they are, of course, now we're comparing 21 year old kids to a 64 year old guy. So I don't think it's a fair comparison, like to say, it's like the Megadeth, Ride the Lightning.

Is it great? No. Is it fine? Yes. Like, musically, it's super tight, right? But why make a big deal of it when, you know, when you're doing a Megadeth version of it, but make it sound exactly the same as the Metallica version?

Well, that's the thing.

@20:29 - Sebastian

Like, what did you do that's different, other than butcher the vocals? And I know that he's had throat cancer, but it really exposes his lack of vocal diversity when he tries to sing that song.

Because it's so much higher than what he normally sings. And you can tell in it, right?

@20:46 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And obviously, this was tuned down, too, because it was pretty, like...

@20:49 - Sebastian

That's what I heard.

@20:49 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It got pretty chunky. got pretty chunky. Like, I noticed something like this has got to be in D. And I just...

Like, I enjoy it. I enjoy it. But it's too... great stuff. enjoy You know how Ride the Lightning, the production, especially the drums, it isn't great, right?

They didn't have a lot of money to spend.

@21:07 - Sebastian

Well, the drums is definitely the highlight on the song, because it's way better than the recorded version, Metallica recorded version.

@21:12 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

But it's like a note for note, I think, what Lars did.

@21:15 - Sebastian

It's a complete homage to what Lars did. I actually get annoyed with people how they on Lars as being a terrible drummer.

Like, is he the greatest heavy metal drummer? No. Is there, like, a long list of way better drummers than he is?

Sure. But he did a lot of things first. He did a lot of things. I mean, obviously, they all borrow from one another.

Like, Dave Grohl will go on record to say that he ripped off the entire Nevermind album from disco. Like, all of his drum beats are disco beats.

And he'll be the first one to tell you, like, I didn't invent anything. I just borrowed from the Gap Band and all these other bands, right?

So we just all borrow from one another and create patterns and go, OK, well, this will put in this song, right?

@22:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I think what Lars gets on for is he's not like a drummer.

@22:03 - Sebastian

Well, he's not technically superior. He's not like a Danny Carey who's like super perfect with his times.

@22:08 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

But Lars just follows the guitar. That's how he learned. He just follows the guitar.

@22:13 - Sebastian

He's self-taught, too, pretty much.

@22:16 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

plays what James plays, but on drums. And that's, you know.

@22:20 - Sebastian

I will say this, and you can echo this because I know we've had this conversation many times. When we saw them live, Lars was not an issue at all.

In fact, he was cleaner than I ever remember him playing.

@22:33 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm just like.

@22:33 - Sebastian

He was good.

@22:34 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah.

@22:34 - Sebastian

He was solid.

@22:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

The songs were spot on. You know, there's other people just let it down. Everybody screwed up. That's okay.

@22:41 - Sebastian

So I will say this about redlining just to get back on track here. Yeah, please. And I'm borrowing this from another review that I read.

Yes, yes. So this isn't my thought, but I 100% agree with this. Because you had an opportunity to go out of the last note.

As the last song that ever. You had a chance to carve your own legacy for the last 40 years.

Yet, your choice, Dave's choice, to be the last song ever is Ride the Lightning by Metallica, which circles back to the entire narrative that's been going through the entire Megadeth life cycle of saying, I was kicked out of Metallica.

Did you know that I wrote, and it's like, that's the way you go out? You go, so to me, that shows, and I'm going to be brutally, and please don't slay me in the comments, but I'm going to be honest with you.

It's like, you've shown no growth in your life by going back to record Ride the Lightning, and that's the last song we hear.

So we are now forever going to be, in our memories, we're going to forever be left with the fact that Dave is still bitter about being kicked out of Metallica.

There's no closure to that. It's not a closure. Closure would have been to not even do the, like, there's no need to do that.

@23:52 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

There, there, you could have, yeah, no, I wouldn't have, I agree, I wouldn't have put it on the record at all.

@23:58 - Sebastian

Or if I did put it on, I would. Then a standalone single that's not connected to there's a standalone, put it on track four.

@24:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Or a B-side album that comes out later. the middle of the record, who cares?

@24:07 - Sebastian

Like, whatever. Yeah.

@24:09 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

But you're right, because... Funny, I was listening to The Last Note today, and I had to turn it off.

I don't want to hear Ida Lightning.

@24:19 - Sebastian

And you have served up on a silver platter for the entire world the comparisons of Metallica and Megadeth. So you have never broken away from trying to compare yourself to Metallica.

No. And frankly, I know there's a lot of Megadeth homers who on Metallica and say Megadeth is a way better band, but the proof is in the record sales.

It's not. You know, Metallica is selling out Commonwealth stadiums for tonight in... Every stadium in the world they sell out.

You know, at the same age. You know, and those are 70, 50 to 70,000 seat stadiums. And Megadeth is touring in B...

So if you want to use the metric of what's more popular, who's selling out more, well, I mean, there's no question in that regard, right?

There is no question.

@25:16 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I think the Black Albums probably sold more than every Megadeth album put together.

@25:19 - Sebastian

Combined, probably.

@25:20 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Probably, like that. And that's no detriment because that album sold more than almost every other record on the planet.

So it's, yeah, it's in the top 10 of album it's there with like Thriller and stuff. It's crazy.

@25:32 - Sebastian

So it's known as a heavy metal album, but I beg to, I mean, it is heavy metal, but there's a lot of hard rock songs on that Black Album as well.

Yeah. Right. So it's just, it's sad to see him go out with Ride the Lightning and to do it exactly the same way that Metallica did.

@25:49 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It is kind of like, well, why didn't you just like change it? You said you're going to make it the Megadeth way.

There was, there's no way that that song was in that shape when he got kicked out of the band.

@25:59 - Sebastian

There was no way. That's the other thing. A lot of people are like, well, he didn't write the whole song.

Like, that whole song is Metallica.

@26:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

He contributed a couple of riffs. I think you can tell with the stuff that, because I've always thought that Ride the Lightning is like the most Megadeth Metallica song.

Like, I think Dave had a lot of fingerprints all over that song, because it's not your typical, especially for the album title song, it's not your typical album title song from Metallica.

@26:26 - Sebastian

So I, well, the thing is, okay, so let me ask you this. So Megadeth was involved with what, like six Metallica songs?

Like four?

@26:33 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I believe. Yeah, four on Kill Out Mall and the two on Ride the Lightning.

@26:36 - Sebastian

Cthulhu and Ride the Lightning.

@26:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yes, which Cthulhu is Hanger 18, which is fine.

@26:40 - Sebastian

That's true, yeah.

@26:41 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

it really is.

@26:42 - Sebastian

Yeah, he rolled that into Hanger 18. Yeah. So, when you think of the greatest Metallica songs ever, how many of those in the top 10 are Dave Mustaine-influenced songs?

@26:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Just the one.

@26:54 - Sebastian

Maybe the Call of Cthulhu? Yeah. I mean, some people put Ride the Lightning as a top 10 Metallica song, but you look...

Look at songs like Fate of Black, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, Unforgiven, Master of Puppets, Seek and Destroy, one.

@27:08 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

We can go all over the place.

@27:09 - Sebastian

So Bleeding Me. Ronnie. Stop it.

@27:12 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

was Ronnie. Oh, my God.

@27:13 - Sebastian

But if you look at Master of Puppets, which is arguably the best Metallica song they've ever wrote, it is good.

@27:20 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It drove Vecna back into the nether realm. It's true. did, yes.

@27:23 - Sebastian

Eddie took care of business.

@27:24 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

season four. Sorry.

@27:26 - Sebastian

Yeah. Sorry. But like one, Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman, know, Fate of Black, those are like top five Metallica songs of all time, which has no influence on debut stage whatsoever on those songs.

So it's just like, you know, if somebody wants to write a video, let's break down all the debut stage influence songs and like Jump in the Fire isn't even a top 50 song in Metallica's repertoire.

Metal Militia is, or Phantom Lord, I guess he put in.

@27:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Metal Militia. Metal Militia is not even probably in the top 70, but the song is fun. I'll give it that.

@27:59 - Sebastian

It's fun. It's fine, right? But it's just like, the catalog of evolution after they left Dave in the dust, so to speak, is so much more greater than Megadeth's, or Dave's ever contributions to Metallica, right?

And I would argue that, like, you look at the best five Megadeth songs, they're not even close to the best five Metallica songs.

@28:23 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No. And maybe I'm biased, but... Well, we are Metallica homers, but I think we can say we have somewhat of a open mind to letting people, letting each other know that, you know, they aren't the band they used to be, but...

@28:39 - Sebastian

Well, my two favorite songs are Hangar 18 and Peace Sells, but does that crack the top 10 of Metallica songs?

@28:45 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I don't think so. I would think Peace Sells might. Peace Sells is pretty timeless. That song's awesome.

@28:51 - Sebastian

Come on, man. Dude, the harmonies in that song is so nuts. Oh. That's, like, the best part of the song.

@28:58 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Which, think, funny enough, I think that is... It's the same progression as in the, what Metallica song is that?

I think in The Unforgiven. It's almost identical. I, oh, what song was it? it either Made to Kill or Another Bad Day?

Or I Am War. One of them, they ripped off Am I Savage. Do they? Yes. But I can't remember the song because I'm just...

@29:24 - Sebastian

And you know what's funny is that Metallica will never go on record to throw him under the bus saying he ripped off this song.

yet Dave will constantly go throw Metallica under the bus. And then did you see that he came out with a statement saying that a tour with Metallica would bring closure?

@29:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, closure because it's printing money. That's what the closure is.

@29:40 - Sebastian

you've on the band that kicked you out for 40 plus years.

@29:43 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And then the last thing you say is like, oh, we should do a tour together. let's go hang out.

Okay, sure.

@29:47 - Sebastian

can we not?

@29:48 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. Can we not? The songs are fine. I was much higher.

@29:54 - Sebastian

On the record until I start talking to you and then... Oh, I'm sorry.

@29:57 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No, no, no. The songs, I whittled it.

@30:00 - Sebastian

It's to like the four songs that I will listen to all the time. I mean, having said that, I put a whole bunch of them on my workout playlist.

Yeah. And honestly, okay, I might be alone here, but a lot of people have slagged on the song, Hey God.

kind of like it. Good. I kind of like it.

@30:16 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's fine. I think it's fine. But I think another bad day is right up there.

@30:22 - Sebastian

Okay. I do like that song.

@30:23 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Let's quickly do an out of 10 for each song. Quickly. Okay. Okay, we'll start with Tipping Point. Where you stand.

@30:33 - Sebastian

I'm going to give it an eight, actually.

@30:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh, gee.

@30:36 - Sebastian

And the reason I give it an eight is that the solos on it are incredible.

@30:39 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yes, they are.

@30:41 - Sebastian

And I've changed my mind on the solos because, yeah. So I'm going to give it an eight.

@30:46 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

A lot of the solos in this record, after you listen to it like four or five times, they're really good.

Yeah.

@30:50 - Sebastian

Really good. Tiba really came to play, for sure.

@30:52 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Tiba came to play, and I think Dave gave his best effort. I think it's commendable for what Dave's done.

Um, I'll give Tipping Point.

@31:00 - Sebastian

Minus seven.

@31:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm not as high That's fair. But I don't care.

@31:04 - Sebastian

That's fair.

@31:05 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

What do you think of what I don't care?

@31:10 - Sebastian

I'm going to be the six.

@31:12 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. I would agree. was six. It's kind of punky. It's kind of weird for an old man to put up a song like that.

It's just, I don't know, just the sound doesn't meet the picture of what you get. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Hey, God.

Okay. Now we're We're talking.

@31:26 - Sebastian

Now we're talking. Hey, God. I don't want to rank this high, but I just like it.

@31:32 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So I'm going to go give it an eight. Yeah.

@31:34 - Sebastian

Ooh. Whoa. give it an eight. I don't know what it is. I think it's, I think as much as we talk about slagging his vocals and his singing style, I think for this song particularly, it works very well.

Oh yeah.

@31:48 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So. I'm not, I'll give it a seven and a half.

@31:51 - Sebastian

I can't give it an eight. Yeah, sure.

@31:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

That's fair. And then Let There Be Shred.

@31:57 - Sebastian

I'll give it a six.

@31:58 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Hmm. Yeah, think I. Yeah, it's because it's fine. Like, the guitar tone kind of bothers me a little bit.

@32:08 - Sebastian

I think the main issue is where's the shred? Like, if you're calling a song Let There Be Shred, I'm expecting a much faster pace.

Like, it's quick, but it's just like, okay, show me that you can still shred.

@32:23 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And honestly, doesn't hold a candle to the last record either. Like I said earlier, the last record is nuts.

It's so fast. The old Puppet Parade.

@32:33 - Sebastian

I'll give it an eight and a half.

@32:34 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Ooh, yeah, I'd agree with that. It's kind of got like, like, Angry Again vibes too. Like, it's kind of like Oh, that's a good point.

@32:41 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@32:41 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's a little quicker, but it's kind of the same idea. And the middle part, the breakdown, and then when he starts doing the muted string rakes with the thing, it's just in the middle of song.

So good. Okay, yeah. Eight, it's good.

@32:54 - Sebastian

Eight, you said eight? Eight, I said eight, yeah.

@32:56 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Okay, another bad day.

@32:58 - Sebastian

Make it a double. I'm also giving that an eight.

@33:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Make it strong. Yeah. song's so good.

@33:03 - Sebastian

I'm also giving that at eight.

@33:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It might be the slow song in the album, I think, think it is, but it's so good. It's just, I don't know what it, I don't know, because the main riff's super simple.

It doesn't, it's not remarkable in the least.

@33:16 - Sebastian

I think there's a, I think it's a different chord progression than he's normally used to.

@33:21 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And so it gives it a diversive feel to it. That's the one in the beginning where it's just like the single notes, and then it stops, and you can hear the delay, and then it kicks so, yeah.

Yeah, that song's cool.

@33:31 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@33:33 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Made to Kill.

@33:37 - Sebastian

The best part of the song is the beginning, because it's the drum intro, and I'm like, oh, here we go.

@33:42 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No, it's funny. It bugs me the most.

@33:43 - Sebastian

I love the drums.

@33:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Really? Yeah, I don't know. It's just, it seems forced. That's just me. I'm to give it a five. I'm not a big fan.

@33:51 - Sebastian

Yeah, it definitely.

@33:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

To me, that's the, this is the weakest song on the record, to me, is Made to Kill. I just, yeah.

@33:59 - Sebastian

Yeah. It definitely falls off fast, yeah, I'll give it a five as well for sure. Okay.

@34:05 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Okay. Obey the call.

@34:07 - Sebastian

So that's pretty high on your list, I think.

@34:08 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So before I give my numbers, it's going to be high. This song has everything a Megadeth song should have.

It's heavy as hell. The vocals are just angry. That sneer is, it's, it's, it's going, he's got it. It's all going on in the, and from the middle part on the solos are awesome.

It's fast. It's like, just, it's like, yeah, it's, it's Megadeth. I'm honestly giving this song a 10 because this is, wow.

@34:32 - Sebastian

This, I think this is the best song they've done for me in a long time.

@34:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Wow. Okay. I love, I can't get enough of this song.

@34:40 - Sebastian

You know, you're, you're turning a corner with that song. Cause they never really gave the song much of a listen, honestly.

Yeah. Okay. I'll start with a seven and a half and then we'll see where we get to.

@34:51 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

ask you again next week if it's gone up or down. And then, okay. I am more, I swear to God, the intro.

I have something on. Like GarageBand or Logic somewhere that sounds exactly that I wrote, that sounds exactly like this.

I'm like, what the hell is this? They hacked into you. They hacked into my, I swear to God, I'm like, what the hell?

But it's, I like the song's fine. It's, I'll give it a, I'll give it a seven, I guess.

@35:16 - Sebastian

I think this is, of the original songs, I think this for me is the worst song on the album.

Really? Even worse? the last song.

@35:24 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh, okay.

@35:25 - Sebastian

I will give this a four. And I think this is, this is the worst, outside of the right of lightning, I think this is his worst vocal contribution to the album.

Yeah, it's not right. I think he really struggles singing this.

@35:37 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah.

@35:38 - Sebastian

I am war.

@35:39 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, it's, yeah.

@35:41 - Sebastian

There's nothing remarkable about this song. No. It's just kind of there, right?

@35:45 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So. And so, going back to Obey the Call for a second, just to dissuade you some more, the lyrics are ridiculous.

It's about, it's about like dystopian society, you know, nuclear holocaust. It's like, like every other Megadeth song, it's, it's awesome.

Oh my God, that song's so heavy. It's so good. Um, the last note, I'm giving it a nine. Yeah.

I give it a nine too.

@36:04 - Sebastian

Yeah. It's a, it's a good song to end off with. And it's just, it, to me, it's the most, it's such a shame that it's not the last song on the album.

I just feel like it. And again, I just feel like he could have done more with it. Could have done more.

@36:17 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. Could have not put ride the lightning after it too. Do you think it would have had more punch if you didn't put ride the lightning after it?

@36:24 - Sebastian

I think instead of focusing on redoing ride the lightning, they could have just omitted that of their desires and just focused more on the last note to like really amp it up.

Like you had an opportunity with this classical guitar to really stretch that out and like really put layers in and really explore that space and make it like this epic closer.

@36:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

me Timu isn't capable of that? Yes, he is.

@36:47 - Sebastian

Yes, he is.

@36:47 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yes, he is. Just let, let's let the man cook. Just let him cook.

@36:50 - Sebastian

They could have added like two or three minutes to that song.

@36:52 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And had this like amazing outro with some, you know, some sort of orchestral stuff. It just. If Dave sneering over it, that would have been even better.

@37:03 - Sebastian

Have you heard the... Oh, Ride Lightning, I'll give it a two. And only because the vocals are so bad in that song.

And I'm sorry, Dave, but it's such a struggle for him.

@37:16 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm actually more disappointed in the solos. And I'm not a solo guy.

@37:21 - Sebastian

Well, it's exactly the same, right? For the most part.

@37:24 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's not. If you go back and listen to the Metallica version...

@37:27 - Sebastian

I'd have to listen to them side-by-side, honestly.

@37:29 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

That Hammett solo is untouchable. What is the best solos you've ever done? my, I know Dave sort of, I think there was the, like, the framework of it.

But what Kirk did to fill up that frame, to fill the, to Bob Ross the painting. Man, there's some happy trees in there, let me tell you.

It, oh, it's...

@37:51 - Sebastian

Especially when it goes into that sort of, you know, the harmony part of the solo at the end?

@37:54 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. They don't really do that on this, which I'm kind of weirded out by. I'm like, why is that not really in there?

Because it was a lot longer on Ride the Lightning, and it was just like, holy , like this, Kirk, I'm not the biggest Kirk Hammett fan, especially nowadays, but back then, Jesus Christ, that dude.

@38:09 - Sebastian

It's kind of like giving up, I feel. He's just living, he's enjoying his life, he's just doing whatever he's he's just, like I've said this before, I can't remember how many podcasts go, but he just kind of shows up for work and then goes home.

Yeah. There's like, to me, Kirk Hammett, the passion of music has gone away.

@38:23 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Here's 27 solos to put in seven songs, figure it out.

@38:26 - Sebastian

Yeah, here you go, Lars, just put it together and we'll figure it out later.

@38:28 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Change the key, I don't care.

@38:30 - Sebastian

Where's the pride in your work? Where's the passion for really trying to home run that? I think Bob Rock had a lot to do with that in the Black Album because he didn't, he didn't, I mean, when we watched the video.

@38:42 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

guitar player not doing his homework. Yeah, I do my homework, man.

@38:45 - Sebastian

Right? Yeah, he held him accountable, right? So he had to show up and go to work instead of just being okay.

I won't give Ride the Lightning a two, I'll give it a four. Okay, yeah, that's fair.

@38:56 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Or maybe it was a bit too harsh. I think two is a little, two is a little bit. Two is like...

Something that was off like one of the latest dancing albums.

@39:05 - Sebastian

That'd be a tip.

@39:06 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh, that's terrible. I'm sorry.

@39:07 - Sebastian

That's not very nice. Yeah, I guess the disappointment in Ride the Lightning for me is that I was really, really hoping it would be a different feel.

And it was really dry sounding too. Somebody said this on socials and I'm just, I laughed so hard when I heard this.

And I'm like, it's so true. It's like the Megadeth version of the Ride the Lightning is something that you ordered off Timu.

@39:36 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And now Timu Montessari, the guitar player, but Timu.

@39:39 - Sebastian

No, Timu or the Wish website or whatever. It's just like, it's not quite there. It's a knockoff version of, it's like, and again, and this is my belief and some people don't share this belief and that's okay.

But my belief is when you do a cover song, you make it your own.

@39:56 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

You know, like you change it, you make it your own use. little bit anyway, right? Yeah. Just to give it your flavor.

@40:01 - Sebastian

Yeah, and the two that come to mind right now, which transcends the song to make it even more, or three actually, so Hurt by Johnny Cash when he took that, and then Trent Reznor famously said, it's not my song anymore as soon as he heard that version.

Even Megadeth's Paranoid, where they sped it up.

@40:24 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Made it punky, right?

@40:26 - Sebastian

They sped it up so fast, and even Type O Negative's Paranoid, where they slowed it down to a slow crawl.

I love that version of the song. good.

@40:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like nine minutes. haunting, yeah.

@40:38 - Sebastian

But it's like, we're going to take the song, and we're going to make it our own, right? Absolutely. And so they didn't really do that with Ride the Lion.

They just did a note for note, for the better part, exact cover of Metallica.

@40:51 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So apparently there's a film that's coming out with this too?

@40:55 - Sebastian

Behind the Mask?

@40:56 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Behind the Mask, I believe.

@40:57 - Sebastian

It's out already, I think.

@40:59 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Is it already in theaters?

@41:02 - Sebastian

I think you can watch it on YouTube, can't you? Or maybe that was like a pre-screening or something. Behind the mask.

I don't know. I don't know.

@41:18 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Maybe not. Do you care?

@41:22 - Sebastian

I'm not going to go to theaters to watch it, but I will watch it when it comes out to streaming, right?

@41:30 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So...

@41:30 - Sebastian

Well, because I don't think it's like what the Metallica thing is. was already out. It's out on the 22nd, I think.

@41:37 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh. So it's already out. Okay. I think it would be interesting if it's like a making-of-the-album documentary. think that'd be really cool.

Just to see...

@41:50 - Sebastian

Yeah, I think it was out on the 22nd. I don't know if it was... The last 40 years condensed in one film seen cinemas worldwide, January 22nd.

@41:59 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's for me.

@42:00 - Sebastian

Megadeth's behind the mask. Okay. So don't know much more than that. I think it's just an exploration.

@42:06 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

think that's a little graspy at straws, in my opinion. Do they need a concert film? Do they need a film?

@42:12 - Sebastian

Well, I will say this. Where they really nailed it is in the marketing for this album. Oh, my God.

They did a really good job of letting the world know that Megadeth has one last album. And I think a lot of the marketing is fantastic for this album, for sure.

So does it hold up to one of the greatest Megadeth albums they've ever written? No. Is it a top five Megadeth album of all time?

@42:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No. Is it the worst album they've written? Absolutely not. I'd put it in the top eight.

@42:43 - Sebastian

It's up there. It could crack the top ten.

@42:46 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

You Rust in Peace, Countdown, right?

@42:49 - Sebastian

Peace out.

@42:50 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. There's three. Actually, I'd almost put it after that because... I'd say I... I it in the top five.

@43:01 - Sebastian

Would you?

@43:02 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah.

@43:04 - Sebastian

It's funny how you put Super Collider, like I said this earlier, but you put it up so high, but everybody hates that.

@43:11 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

You know why? Because it's not angry. I think that's the thing.

@43:21 - Sebastian

Is it not angry again?

@43:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's not poppy, but it's also not like dystopia or the sick, the dying, and the dead. It's like this record.

It's not much different than this. You should really listen to it. I think it's got some serious groove. It's groovy.

@43:36 - Sebastian

I have listened to it, but I haven't listened to it in a while.

@43:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

You should. Just give it a chance.

@43:40 - Sebastian

Okay. So this is the Loudwire ranking. Russ and Peace, Peace Sells, Countdown, Euthanasia. And then they put Killings My Business and Businesses Good, which I don't like the production of that at No.

So far, so good.

@43:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So what?

@43:54 - Sebastian

That's a great album, actually. Cryptic Writings. Okay. The sick, the dying, and the dead is ranked eighth. Endgame is 9th, Dystopia is 10th, and then it kind of falls off after that.

@44:05 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, Endgame's good too, but it's in the same vein as Super Collider. It's like Endgame 13 and Super Collider are all like, they're just all there.

Like Endgame, it's really heavy, heavy. You should check them out. They're pretty good.

@44:18 - Sebastian

I mean, what's the song from Super Collider that's like their... No, Kingmaker.

@44:24 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

That's the song. Yeah, but there's some like, there's like Deep Cuts. Of course, they're all Deep Cuts. I'm not going to hear any anyway, but...

Man, there's just some fun stuff. Why do people not like Risk? Risk sucks.

@44:37 - Sebastian

It's terrible.

@44:41 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I mean, I challenge you to listen to Prince of Darkness. that's a song. I like The Doctor's Calling too.

And that's, I think, about where it stops. You don't like Crush Em? No, I don't like Crush Em. Crush Em isn't good.

Seven is a good song too. Is it? Is it? Risk is terrible. You should listen to the album. Either world is not enough.

Fathom? Oh man, was that the name of the album? world doesn't know. That's James Bond movie.

@45:04 - Sebastian

Well, they tried to make a commercial album with Risk, right?

@45:07 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, Risk was not good. It was just misguided. It's just not good. It's not good. That's just my opinion.

@45:14 - Sebastian

And Crash Jam is supposed to be their thunderstruck.

@45:16 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yes, and it failed miserably. It's fun to listen to every once in a while.

@45:23 - Sebastian

The funny thing is that if somebody other than Megadeth put out Risk, people would be like, that's a great album.

@45:27 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Well, you could say that with so many bands. could say that with like U2's Pop or Zootopia, Zuropa.

@45:33 - Sebastian

It just didn't fit what the fans were expecting, I guess.

@45:37 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Exactly. Like when bands take a hard right, we're going this way. And you're just like, what? You know what I got with Iron Maiden with X Factor?

It's kind of a, okay, okay, well Bruce went that way. I think we're going to go over here and visit Alternative Land a little bit as Iron Maiden gets.

Yeah. So overall, okay, we'll do one night's ranking overall. It's fine. Out of 10, when you give the record as a whole, as a whole, I'd probably give it, he's giving it a six and a half.

@46:08 - Sebastian

Oh, six and a half. Maybe. It was probably going to drop as the recency bias kind of goes away.

Yeah. Having said that, though, it's like, I want that one slap in the face song that I'm just like, jaw dropping song in it.

And I never felt really jaw dropped in any of the songs. Like it never really looked at like the song.

Oh, I got to immediately play that. Again.

@46:30 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Right. Yeah. It's too bad. Cause there's no, it's no like a rust and peace or tornado of souls or even symphony destruction, sweating bullets, blah, blah, blah.

Yeah. You know, no songs like that, but at least I got one. I got one.

@46:43 - Sebastian

I got to obey the call that song. Yeah.

@46:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

That's good.

@46:46 - Sebastian

God. That's symphony destruction, easiest guitar riff of all time to play. But it's catchy as hell, man. I guess it's so good.

Right. So good. That's a great lesson to, to really look at the space that.

@47:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And I will say, sort of, to start closing this out, this album's got a lot of melody in it for a Megadeth album.

@47:17 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@47:18 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like, he's really trying to have, not catchy songs, but have songs with memorable choruses, you know, like, Another Bad Day, like, that song gets sucked in your head.

Well, me, Obey the Call, whatever, I'm not going to talk about Obey the Call anymore. But, it's just, they're not the band to do that, though.

@47:38 - Sebastian

No, and maybe there's, like, a deficiency in his playing ability now at his age.

@47:43 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

We're find out in three weeks when we see him. Yeah. To see what's what. I'm sure he'll be, I'm sure he'll be great.

It'll be really nice to watch him in, like, a smaller venue, though, too. Yes. Well, we did see him at the Commodore.

@47:57 - Sebastian

That's true. I was in their dark days.

@48:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh, yeah, on the Risk Tour.

@48:01 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@48:03 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'll never forget, they opened with Prince of Darkness. It's like, really?

@48:07 - Sebastian

I actually like that song. That song's good.

@48:09 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. Bit of a banger.

@48:10 - Sebastian

It's like the only song on that album that I repeat listened to.

@48:14 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. I tried when I was going through all my mega death, when I listened to everything. I tried so hard.

@48:21 - Sebastian

And I just... What did you land on? Like, what era did you land on there? You're like, oh, this is, like, obviously, Rust in Peace and Countdown, Peace Sells.

@48:28 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's kind of hard.

@48:30 - Sebastian

Like, I really landed... Collider.

@48:33 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

You know, the 2006 to 2013 was... Like, people on those... People on them. Like, but they're not bad. Like, they're...

Like, I understand I've listened to Rust in Peace and Countdown and Peace Sells 4 million times. And I'm just kind of tired of it.

So maybe it's like, oh, this is like, it's not new, but to me it is. And it was like, wow, this is actually pretty good.

But after tonight, I'm going to take a little break from the scene of Megadeth, because it's literally been nothing.

nothing. But for the last four days.

@49:02 - Sebastian

listen to the Unplugged album.

@49:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No, you sampled me enough, and I'm good. I never need to listen to that ever in my life.

@49:10 - Sebastian

What the heck is... Hidden Treasures is a great album, by the way.

@49:15 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh, because that's got... Yeah, it's got Paranoid. It's got Di-Items on it.

@49:19 - Sebastian

It's got 9-0. Well, of them are covers, right? Yes. A few of them. It's like a best of with a cover.

I don't know. It's a weird album, because some of them are...

@49:30 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

That have the song where he makes fun of Metallica, doing the Now I Lead Me Down to Sleep, blah, blah, blah, my soul.

@49:36 - Sebastian

Go to Hell.

@49:37 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Go to Hell. Oh, God, that song's good.

@49:39 - Sebastian

That's another good... It's More Mr.

@49:40 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Nice Guy, which is Alice in Chains. Alice Cooper.

@49:42 - Sebastian

Alice in Chains. Alice in Chains. It's got Breakpoint, which is a decent song. Go to Hell, which is that song.

@49:48 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Angry Again, which is an amazing song.

@49:50 - Sebastian

It sure is. 99 Ways to Die, amazing song. It got the Megadeth version of Paranoid on there. Amazing. Di-Items, which I think is a song that's slept on.

@49:57 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I think that's a great song that nobody ever talks about.

@49:59 - Sebastian

Absolutely. So good. The intro to Diadems is amazing. Give it a listen if you haven't listened to it. It's so great.

Problems, A Toot Le Monde, which is one of their best ballads that they've ever done, Symptom of Destruction, and then there's a demo song, and then New World Order, which I'm not really New World Order.

Yeah.

@50:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like Ministry's New World Order?

@50:23 - Sebastian

That's cool. Diadems lands with me because it's clean guitar at the beginning, which you don't really hear often. Not often with a Megadeth album.

@50:32 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah.

@50:32 - Sebastian

Okay. Yeah. Anyways.

@50:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And then we will leave you with this. They gave me gold.

@50:46 - Sebastian

They gave me a name. No last note. But every deal was signed in blood and flames.

@51:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So here's my last will, my final testament, my sneer, I came, I ruled, now I disappear. How can you follow this up with Red Lightning?

You just take Red Lightning off. Anyways, thank you Dave.

@51:24 - Sebastian

I just want to thank you Dave, and I know that we've slagged on you a little bit, but that's what we're here for.

We're not just here to pump tires of all these bands, we're here to critique our opinions of the song.

And it's going to be good, it's going to be bad.

@51:37 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

We've been Megadeth fans since... We're going to the concert, so... You know, like since the late 80s, since we were kids.

Yes. And sure, are they a meme? Can you make fun of them? Can you make fun of their lyrical content?

@51:49 - Sebastian

Yes. Yeah, but we always make fun of James Hetfield and his...

@51:54 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Exactly, right? And I love their music. I think it's kind of sad that Dave is. You know, he's hanging it up.

Really, after this song, you cannot, you cannot make another record. Because it's just, it's just what it's, it's, it's purposefully.

Yeah, this is how I'm going. He's not, I don't think he's hurting for money. He can retire, live his golden years.

making royalties from Metallica songs. Every time they play, every time I ride the lightning album or kill them all themselves, they make money.

Anytime they play any of the songs he wrote, they make money, he makes money. So, you know, it, he takes a lot of , but the dude's an amazing guitar player.

And he's, he's a great songwriter. He wrote some of the most iconic metal riffs of all time.

@52:37 - Sebastian

Sure.

@52:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Right. And to have another one of them, hang it up, you know, in our next 10 years of our life, we're going to see the end.

people are going to be retiring. Of all the bands that we love, you know, that are still, that are still.

Yes. Doing things are probably almost all going to be gone. Yeah. Right. Or getting close.

@52:57 - Sebastian

I guess we're going to have to open our horizons to find

@53:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And new, younger bands to start listening to, right? I think so, because a lot of stuff I like isn't of anybody that's, you know, under the age of 50.

@53:07 - Sebastian

Well, I guess we're going to be young blood homers.

@53:10 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Sure, whatever, it's all good. But yeah, just wanted to say thank you to Dave. Thank you, Dave. Thank you for Megadeth, you know, for even being part of the Metallica story.

I think as maybe unfair, he thinks it might have been, that's still a huge part of our lives, too, because we are, at the end of the day, we're just metal homers, and we love Metallica, we love Megadeth.

Like, I got into Megadeth because I was like, holy , this guy was in Metallica.

@53:37 - Sebastian

And then... The same. Right?

@53:39 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And it's like, oh, wow, okay, cool, the Megadeth guys are pretty good, you know? And it's like, wow. So not all bad things come out of, you know, being exited out of one band that was sort of nothing at the time.

And he made a great career for himself.

@53:55 - Sebastian

I just wish he could have forgiven and moved on.

@53:58 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Just let it go. Yeah. Just let it go.

@54:01 - Sebastian

Although, having said that, if you didn't, part of the charm of Megadeth is that anger behind the sneer and the anger behind it.

Absolutely. But yes, again, thank you, Dave, for the memories.

@54:12 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Absolutely. And that's that.

@54:15 - Sebastian

Bye.

@54:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Any ideas for next week? Well, there's a New Testament album out. Did you hear the new Ghost cover song?

@54:32 - Sebastian

Yeah. Is that a cover? I heard a new Ghost song came up.

@54:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's a Pet Shop Boys.

@54:36 - Sebastian

It's a Pet Shop Boys song. Pet Shop Boys.

@54:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's good.

@54:39 - Sebastian

Do you actually listen to Testament at all?

@54:42 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Not really.

@54:43 - Sebastian

I haven't really ever given them a listen. So that might be something interesting to do.

@54:49 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm going to forward you an email to your actual email. I'm pretty sure. Where is it here?

@54:59 - Sebastian

See you again. Oh, I'm dumb. It came out last year, October 10th. It just came up on my Spotify, and someone said that there was a New Testament album open.

@55:08 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So I got sent something from an artist I follow. He's an independent guy. I just got to find it.

And the song, I guess the music, it's, you know, it's not really our style. It's kind of punky, and what the is it?

But I'll find it and send it to you. Maybe we can listen to it and play it or something and play it.

And the hell, man, where is it? You could do that. Oh, it's right here. I'll forward this to you.

The band's called P Mad. Just like this P, the letter P and then mad. And it's this guy, Paul, he's from like Scotland or something.

Can you follow him? Yeah, I follow him. He's got some pretty neat . And he has new singles called Blood.

Blood. Blood. I'm assuming this just goes out from his band web. But it came to us and just, you know, I'll just forward it.

Open to my email then, hold on. Yeah, it's on the way. Because I think maybe sometimes we should do like indie bands.

Sure. just talk, a song, talk about it. Why not, right? And, but yeah.

@56:24 - Sebastian

Did you email it yet or no? I did.

@56:25 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh, there it is, okay. And the song's not right.

@56:28 - Sebastian

Like it's not. So he reached out to you and send it to you or?

@56:31 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I don't know. Like, it's just, it came generically because I follow his socials and stuff. So I think it just might've been like a, a generic thing to, to everything.

I don't think he necessarily reached out to, to you and I as.

@56:46 - Sebastian

He just, well, he emailed you. Yeah. He, that's pretty cool. PMAD the band, new music submission. PMAD spills blood to mandatory music.

High mandatory music. Happy new year. Hoping all of a sudden. Celebrations went well and you enjoyed. Hopefully your news below is just released.

It's brand new album. One plus one equals minus one on vinyl. That's interesting. Yeah, let's do it.

@57:10 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

That's fine.

@57:11 - Sebastian

Stream blood on Spotify. Have you...

@57:15 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I like the song.

@57:17 - Sebastian

Let me give it a quick listen then.

@57:20 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

PMAD.

@57:21 - Sebastian

Yeah. Name of the band. That's interesting. Is it just one guy?

@57:26 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I think it's just one guy. He's older. He's older than us.

@57:30 - Sebastian

He's got... Yeah, it's only got 13,000.

@57:34 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Here, I'll put it on.

@57:36 - Sebastian

I'm listening to it.

@57:37 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh.

@57:39 - Sebastian

But you can play it. That's fine.

ACTION ITEM: Email Paul (P Mad) re: play 'Blood' on show; request permission; send episode link post-release - WATCH

ACTION ITEM: Research P Mad for upcoming show segment - WATCH

@57:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like it's kind of that like post-punk kind of... I don't know how to explain what it is.

ACTION ITEM: Research P Mad for upcoming show segment - WATCH

@57:53 - Sebastian

Sure, let's do that.

@57:54 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Okay, let's do it. We'll do some research on them. And maybe I'll reply to that email. Yeah. And say, hey, that'd be okay if we play it on our show and talk about it and blah, blah, blah.

@58:04 - Sebastian

We'll give you a link to the podcast after we're done with it. Yeah, sure.

@58:09 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Okay, I'll email them tomorrow.

@58:11 - Sebastian

Yeah, let's do it.

ACTION ITEM: Scour Spotify Discovery Weekly/Release Radar for indie artists for future segments - WATCH

@58:11 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

That's a great idea. Yeah, why not? And then, you know, from time to time, we can pick an indie artist.

We can just say, hey, look, you know, we found these guys. Because why not? Because you and I, we both listen to so much that no one knows about.

@58:23 - Sebastian

I'll be more mindful to, like, scour my Discovery Weekly or release Radar to see if there's something that, like, falls through the cracks.

like, you got to check this band out that I've never heard of before.

@58:32 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

But it's amazing.

@58:33 - Sebastian

Yeah. So, yeah.

@58:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

All right. So, one last thing. Angus McSix, they're all over the place right now because they got a record coming out.

Well, all over my socials anyway. But they put out this video. And, like, the drummer is like the Hulk.

He's like, no, he's like an orc.

@58:46 - Sebastian

He's like a giant green orc.

@58:49 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And it's ridiculous. No, seriously. He literally actually is an orc. my God. And they got a new guitar player.

She's, like, kind of cute redhead Scandinavian chick. And you can see him. He's got his back to the camera.

And she's looking over, like, she goes, oh my god, that's so big, and blah, blah, blah, the wood is, the wood is so nice, and, like, Adam Mixix walks in, he's like, and then the camera slowly pans, it's like this giant drumstick he's got, and it's just, it's so funny.

Of course, yeah, that's good. It's pretty good.

@59:15 - Sebastian

Yeah, it's pretty funny.

@59:16 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Anyways. You can do Glory Hammer the week after if you want. Oh, good god, no, thank you. Okay, fine, it's fine.

No, we're not doing, we're not gonna do. Okay, see ya. See ya, bye. Bye.
