We would love to hear from you!! Send us a text

I sincerely apologize with the coughing and rough voice, Mike

New Music Discovery: P-Mad

  • Artist: P-Mad (Paul Dillon), an independent artist from Ireland.
  • Genre: Dark fusion of post-punk, darkwave, and industrial rock.
    • Influences: Depeche Mode, The Cure, Joy Division.
    • Sound: Haunting, chuggy pace distinct from heavier industrial acts like Nine Inch Nails.
  • Album: One Plus One Equals One (available on Bandcamp).
  • Track Reviewed: "Blood," an intense single with militaristic lyrics on war and survival.

Megadeth & Anthrax Concert

  • Venue: Kelowna Rockets arena (~5k capacity), chosen for its smaller, more intimate feel over larger venues.
  • Megadeth:
    • Setlist: Career-spanning, opening with "Tipping Point" and including "Symphony of Destruction."
    • Context: Dave Mustaine is in his 60s; the physical demands of metal touring are becoming unsustainable.
  • Anthrax:
    • Setlist: 9 songs + 2 covers, all pre-John Bush material.

Artist Empowerment & AI

  • Core Idea: Modern tech significantly lowers the barrier to entry for artists, enabling global self-expression without corporate backing.
  • AI in Music: Mike is using AI for instrumentation in personal songwriting projects.
    • Process: Records guitar riffs → uses AI to generate full band arrangements → iterates through versions like a producer.
    • Rationale: Acknowledged as a key technology to adapt to, similar to the internet or smartphones.

Personal Updates & Travel

  • Vancouver Fan Expo:
    • Highlights: 25th anniversary of Lord of the Rings, panels with The Goonies cast.
    • Personal: Photo op with Kerri Green; daughter met Broadway star Christian Borle.
    • Purchases: Narsil sword replica and a Sauron figurine by Weta Workshop.
  • Vancouver Food:
    • Space Chicken: Kingsway restaurant with a bright, space-themed aesthetic.
    • Big Mama and Papa's Pizza: Features a 4.5' x 4.5' pizza ($350, feeds 50).

@0:10 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Mandatory music, baby. So, we did hop into a time capsule and got David Comberdale to record that back in 1988.

@0:22 - Sebastian

I like it.

@0:23 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And he was on board. He was like, yes, a podcast. This is 1988. What is that, sir? You're speaking gibberish.

Mandatory Music, how are you, Deb?

@0:35 - Sebastian

I'm good, man.

@0:36 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

How are you? I'm good. So, did you know, we were driving through the city. Okay, we went down to the Fan Expo, me and my daughter.

It was a little nerd weekend for the two of us.

@0:46 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@0:48 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

But we were driving around in Vancouver after we had lunch with you. And we saw this place on Kingsway.

was called Space Chicken.

@0:57 - Sebastian

Space Chicken.

@0:58 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Space Chicken. And... And all their food is sort of named after the planet. like the sad, there's a Saturn burger, Pluto burger.

The Saturn burger has onion rings on the top. Hey, hey.

@1:11 - Sebastian

Okay.

@1:12 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And it caught my eye because it did not fit like this because the colors were like super bright. And it was like space chicken.

I'm like, what is space chicken? Looked up the website yesterday. I'm like, yeah, it's actually looks pretty good. So next time we come down to Vancouver, we're going to.

@1:25 - Sebastian

Space chicken?

@1:26 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Space chicken.

@1:27 - Sebastian

Okay, let's do it.

@1:27 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And then there was some other place called Chicky Porky. I'm not sure I want to go there, but just the name just kind of made me chuckle.

@1:33 - Sebastian

Chicky Porky.

@1:33 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm assuming they sell chicken and pork. That was on, I believe it was on Boundary Road.

@1:41 - Sebastian

But yeah, it's me. I'm going to have to restart my Zoom here.

@1:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm so sorry. Oh my God.

@1:46 - Sebastian

Okay. Hold on.

@1:47 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'll just keep talking. So while Seb restarts Zoom, he's having issues.

@1:52 - Sebastian

Yeah. My screen just went black. Do you still hear me or not?

@1:55 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I can see you. You're very dark, but I can see you.

@1:57 - Sebastian

What?

@1:57 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, seriously, man. Um, what is going on here? I don't know.

@2:04 - Sebastian

All right. Hold on.

@2:06 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

We can always restart.

@2:07 - Sebastian

I can. me, let me, let me restart my computer. Something's wrong here.

@2:13 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Okay. Well, in the meantime, I'm going to, uh, what am I gonna do? Oh yeah. So my daughter and I, we went to the Fan Expo in Vancouver.

So it was, it's the 25th anniversary of Lord of the Rings. That was kind of the, the big get for me.

Um, there was also a couple of the Goonies were there. Corey Feldman and Kerry Green and Sean Astin were all there.

They did a fun panel and I talked about, you know, talked about the movie, the Goonies and what it was like to make it and all that kind of fun stuff.

Corey Feldman was on his best behavior. He actually wasn't obnoxiously terrible, which was kind of, it was refreshing. So I thought he was just going to be a bit of a, a bit of a diva.

And you know. I paid for a photo op with Cary Green because she's just awesome and she's such a nice lady, so shout out to Cary Green, she's super cool, and yeah, that was fun.

And then my daughter, she got to meet actually one of her idols, Christian Borle, he's a famous Broadway star, and he was at this fan convention, and I had never seen a 14-year-old kid that excited or that nervous after she met him, and he was the nicest guy on the planet, which was absolutely amazing.

He just seems like a really down-to-earth and cool guy, she was like, she was shaking, it was, I had never seen her so excited, it was fabulous, and then hours and hours later, she had a photo op with him too, so she got to meet him twice, and yeah, she was, she was, she was tickled pink.

@3:51 - Sebastian

I'm back.

@3:52 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Hey, he's back, there you go, I was, I'm not editing anything out of it.

@3:55 - Sebastian

Perfect.

@3:56 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I was just yammering on about stuff.

@3:57 - Sebastian

Yeah, it was odd, as soon as he started Zoom, Everything went black and I couldn't see anything.

@4:02 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

See, that's why if you have Windows, Windows sucks.

@4:06 - Sebastian

I think it might be an issue with Chrome and Zoom, but anyways, I'm back.

@4:10 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I can see you. Do you do this through the browser?

@4:13 - Sebastian

No, but I access my email through my browser and then it goes into the app and then somehow... So I've started using Microsoft Edge just to go into the email.

@4:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

seems to have fixed the problem.

@4:24 - Sebastian

I know Chrome has a bunch of issues with extensions and stuff like that. Yeah, Chrome is kind of poopy.

Well, it used to be the default.

@4:33 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It used to be the goods.

@4:35 - Sebastian

It used to be, yeah.

@4:36 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It used to be the goods.

@4:37 - Sebastian

Yeah, right.

@4:37 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm a space chicken is the last thing I remember talking about. Yeah, I was just talking about the Fan Expo a little bit.

@4:42 - Sebastian

How did you like the pizza place?

@4:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

The pizza place, Big Mama and Papa's gigantic crazy pizza was really good.

@4:48 - Sebastian

I didn't have dinner that night.

@4:49 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

fact, I was very full. We both, yeah, we both really enjoyed it.

@4:54 - Sebastian

Yeah, so there's a new pizza parlor in Vancouver called Big Mama and Papa's Pizza. And they said... A 54 by 54 inch pizza, which is $350 and feeds like 50 people.

@5:06 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, which we did not get because I think I'd still be in the hospital if we tried to eat that.

@5:10 - Sebastian

I how many days do you think it would take us to eat that?

@5:13 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'd eat till I throw up.

@5:14 - Sebastian

That's what I would eat. Dude, the thing is so huge. It's four.

@5:17 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's four and a half feet by four and a half feet.

@5:18 - Sebastian

Yeah, four and a half by four and a half feet.

@5:20 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's a lot of pizza.

@5:21 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@5:21 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

A lot of cheese, a lot of bread.

@5:23 - Sebastian

I don't think. Can you get that in a stuffed crust?

@5:27 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Can I get Alfredo sauce? Is that tomato sauce? I just want to throw it over the head.

@5:30 - Sebastian

That's a lot of Alfredo sauce. Oh my goodness.

@5:33 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

yeah, my pizza had Alfredo sauce on it and nothing better than pizza with Alfredo sauce.

@5:39 - Sebastian

Yeah, maybe not.

@5:40 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Well, it's my favorite kind of pizza anyway, but who am I? I'm just a guy. Just a guy. Who likes weird stuff.

I bought a sword as well, which is kind of, I never thought I would ever say.

@5:51 - Sebastian

Aragon sword.

@5:52 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I never thought I would buy a sword in my life because why would I buy a sword? I don't know.

But since... I'm such a Lord of the Rings loser.

@6:01 - Sebastian

Dude, looks good on your back wall.

@6:03 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, it's basically Narsil all put back together, like in Return of the King. It's pretty sweet. And I bought a Sauron figurine.

@6:11 - Sebastian

I see him there, too.

@6:12 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It cost more than the sword did.

@6:14 - Sebastian

We won't talk about that because we might be listening.

@6:17 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No, we don't need to talk about that.

@6:20 - Sebastian

Marco!

@6:23 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

But the figurine was made by Weta, who created all the stuff.

@6:28 - Sebastian

Nice.

@6:28 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

had a big studio in New Zealand and stuff like that. So it's a high-quality piece of plastic that's molded into a bad guy.

@6:36 - Sebastian

Have you been watching A Night of the Seven Kingdoms at all?

@6:39 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No.

@6:40 - Sebastian

Because that's a new Game of Thrones thing.

@6:42 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I watched the first two, and then I stopped. And then apparently three and four and five are awesome.

@6:47 - Sebastian

Apparently five is the highest rated of a Game of Thrones episode ever.

@6:51 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh, I'll get there.

@6:52 - Sebastian

I've watched the first three. So Deb and I watched the first three. I haven't watched the fourth one. It took a little bit to get going.

And then you kind of...

@8:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Probably.

@8:00 - Sebastian

And the only thing I remember is the fact, I know they play Symphony of Destruction, because they saw something about a clip saying Symphony of Destruction in Victoria, and then I know I think the lead track is Tipping Point, I think is the first track, which is fine.

@8:14 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'll you that.

@8:16 - Sebastian

It's not a big stretch to imagine that their lead single off their new album would open a concert. That's pretty normal for a lot of bands, honestly.

@8:26 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Well, we saw them on the Risk Tour, they opened with Prince of Darkness. So, you know.

@8:30 - Sebastian

Yes. And, you know, Metallica in the Black Album Tour opened with NRSandman, I believe.

@8:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah.

@8:38 - Sebastian

Yeah, they did.

@8:39 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I read the set list. I decided once I saw it, I can't unsee it, so I might as well just look into it.

It's pretty good. It's fine.

@8:45 - Sebastian

It's got a mix of a lot of different flavors I heard. I scrolled through it as fast as humanly possible, you know, and the only thing I remember seeing is Tipping Point, because it's number one, so.

@8:56 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Okay.

@8:57 - Sebastian

So, yeah.

@8:58 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And that's all there is to talk about. Because it's. You know, it's a career-spanning set list.

@9:02 - Sebastian

Let's just go with that. Yes, that's what I've read.

@9:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

bit of this, a little bit of that, some of this, some of that.

@9:07 - Sebastian

Which makes sense.

@9:08 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

They skip a lot of stuff, but they can't play forever because they're old.

@9:13 - Sebastian

There is talk, too, that he is wanting to pass the torch as well, whatever that means.

@9:19 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

What does that mean? That's his idea of, look at me, I'm cool, and I'm going to pass my torch.

@9:24 - Sebastian

But he also has not ruled out doing a solo album either.

@9:27 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Whatever.

@9:28 - Sebastian

Which would be interesting.

@9:30 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

They'll probably be called Megadave, and then that'll be fine.

@9:33 - Sebastian

Yeah, that's a great name for a band. Can we call it ourselves Megadave?

@9:37 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

We sure can. But that's why I hate this idea of farewell tours, albums. It never works. You know, The Who has been on a farewell tour since 1985.

Kiss has been on a farewell tour since 1996.

@9:57 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@9:58 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Right? And they've... Motherf***. The crew's been on a farewell tour for the last like eight years, you know, Slayer went away and then they just play a date here and a date there.

@10:08 - Sebastian

So they kind of, they did it. All I've learned about farewells from wrestling is that you're never really retired.

@10:14 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No.

@10:15 - Sebastian

You know, people have these retirement matches and stuff like that. And then they come back a couple of years later for one last match or whatever.

It's like that in music as well. It's like people are like, oh, I'm done. But I actually probably believe Dave when he said he's done because he's physically not able to do it anymore with his voice and his difficulties playing now with his hands and stuff.

So and he's in his mid 60s. That style of music is very difficult to play in your 60s, 70s and 80s.

@10:46 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

You've been around long enough.

@10:47 - Sebastian

I mean, how many like metal guitars do you know are playing in their 70s, touring in their 70s?

@10:55 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Just a couple like KK Downing and Judas Priest.

@11:00 - Sebastian

Yeah, Jesus Peace is up there. Iron Maiden is going to be up there, too, because they're slightly older than their late 60s, think, right?

Early 70s?

@11:08 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, Dave's in his early 70s, right?

@11:10 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@11:11 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. So yeah, it's going to be fun. saw Anthrax is setless, too.

@11:17 - Sebastian

Nine songs, two covers.

@11:18 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

What are you doing?

@11:20 - Sebastian

Nine songs, two covers?

@11:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Come on. What are you playing covers for? off.

@11:25 - Sebastian

Are they Megadeth covers? Oh, it'd be awesome if they're Metallica covers.

@11:28 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No.

@11:29 - Sebastian

It will not be Metallica covers until you're straight up.

@11:31 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's all pre-John Bush stuff. Nice. Okay. I kind of already don't care.

@11:42 - Sebastian

I think the thing I'm most excited about is seeing them in a smaller venue, right? Because you're always much closer in a smaller venue.

Yeah. You know, like the problem watching Metallica is like you're not really watching Metallica, you're watching a screen that's above the stage.

@11:57 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Well, this is still an arena. It's not a big one, but it's still an

@12:00 - Sebastian

I mean, it's not like she has a seat, like at least 5,000, but still that's close enough where you don't have to watch a monitor.

You can just watch the live perform on stage.

@12:09 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Right.

@12:10 - Sebastian

So, so that's, you can fit a full size hockey arena, hockey rink in there.

@12:15 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So that's where the Kelowna Rockets play.

@12:17 - Sebastian

Um, the Kelowna Rockets.

@12:20 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. So pardon my, my throat. I, I'm not, I'm under the weather. You look great though, Mike.

@12:26 - Sebastian

You look great. I don't feel great, but, smoking mirrors.

@12:32 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. So what, how usually what happens when I go into a giant crowd of people is I come out the only one that gets sick and well.

@12:37 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@12:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Let's just, uh, let's do it for what it is. Fan expo Mike here. Fan expo.

@12:43 - Sebastian

All the, all the people that don't need their house.

@12:46 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Some, whatever. Somebody breathe on me or whatever. It's fine. Um, but tonight.

@12:52 - Sebastian

Yes, sir.

@12:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

We are going to tap into a little, uh, indie rock because we never talk about. Sort of independent artists, and we should be.

@13:04 - Sebastian

we're going like uber independent.

@13:06 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, and like with our platform, should be, you know, music that one of us discovers for, you know, on their discover list or YouTube or wherever you find your music.

And I happened to find this artist, P-Mad, which his name is Paul Dillon. He's from Ireland. Yeah. And he's like, it's called, it's more like a dark fusion of post-punk, dark wave, and industrial rock.

@13:30 - Sebastian

That's fair.

@13:31 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And he's cool. And I've had some limited interaction, a little bit, you know, you know, I comment on some of his posts and he actually responds back and it's kind of, it's, he seems like, seems like a good guy.

He's got tons of music out there. Tons on Bandcamp. I discovered Bandcamp today.

@13:46 - Sebastian

And think that might Well, welcome to your Bandcamp journey here.

ACTION ITEM: Buy P-Mad album One Plus One Equals One on Bandcamp - WATCH

@13:51 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh, God, pardon me. Yeah. So, so he's, he's got albums called. I'm sorry. My throat is a mess. You're doing great.

No, thanks. He's got a new album out now. It's on Bandcamp, but you kind of have to buy it.

But there's two singles out on streaming, which I think I am going to buy it because I like the two singles a lot.

@14:13 - Sebastian

You got to support.

@14:14 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. So the album's called One Plus One Equals One. And it's led by the intense new single, Blood. And the project explores themes of survival, truth, life, and death, and global unrest.

Which, I don't know if anyone's been watching the news or TV the last couple of years, the world's kind of a weird place.

@14:34 - Sebastian

It's quite relevant, really.

@14:36 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

You know, and the song Blood, where is she going to play for everybody? It is super relevant. It's, you know, sort of very militaristic lyrics and about, you know, having your family taken, put into war, stuff like that.

@14:51 - Sebastian

But, yeah, it is an interesting music genre that he's kind of in because it's... He has metal, but I wouldn't say he's metal, you know, dark wave, industrial rock, post-punk.

@15:07 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like you can hear, like there's Depeche Mode, there's The Cure, there's, you know, all sorts of awesome 80s bands.

@15:13 - Sebastian

With more of an industrial feel to it. Yeah, exactly.

@15:17 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And it's kind of jarring at first, but once you realize what he's going for, man, the music's so good.

So good. So we'll play the song now, I'm going to put myself on mute because I'm going to die.

@15:31 - Sebastian

Go for it. We'll listen to the whole song and comment about it afterwards.

@15:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. All right. We'll be right back in three minutes or so, if I can get us to work.

@15:40 - Sebastian

I believe.

@15:41 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Man, I'm on fire tonight. I see you wake up. Your eyes are bright. be right back in We'll be right back.

Okay. I Plan to fall from the sky, yeah, plan to fall from the sky. They want it all to themselves.

The generals come for your blood. They come for your blood. They for your blood. What do we know about this world anyway?

I see the sun, just like everyone. It seems so far away. They come as better than people. I want it to live forever.

You know what I mean? be I'll back. They're not steering down the barrel of the gun The generals come for your blood They come for your blood They come for your blood What do we know about?

This world anyway Treated like sick Handshakes starting Standing on the edge of the world We're not afraid We're afraid

We'll find our way home. We'll find our way home. What do we know about this world? Anyway, the generals come for your blood.

They come for your blood. They come for your blood. What do we know about this world anyway? We'll keep on moving till we find.

Till we find what we're looking for. Bigger part of Fathomore. Bigger part of Fathomore.

@19:11 - Sebastian

All right, that was P-Mad with the song blood off the album one plus one equals minus one.

@19:18 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No, is it minus one?

@19:19 - Sebastian

It's one.

@19:22 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, that, okay, that song is, it's awesome. It is very, the lyrics are very pertinent to what's going on.

Sort of even like the generals want your blood. That's kind of, kind of been a theme of, especially modern, the modern world of war and stuff like that.

@19:37 - Sebastian

And yeah, it's, it's a bit of an issue right now.

@19:40 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So a little bit. What'd you think?

@19:43 - Sebastian

Um, I've, I've heard it before. Like when you, like, this is not a new listen for me, but it's definitely different in terms of what music we would normally listen to.

So it's got very, very heavy industrial, you know, vibes to it. Right. But like, you know, my industrial music.

Listening comes mostly from Nine Inch Nails and Ministry and a little bit of Danzig, which is a lot more hardcore in terms of the fuzziness of it.

@20:10 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

This is definitely more of a chuggy pace to it.

@20:17 - Sebastian

It's pretty haunting the way it's constructed, right? I liked it. I thought it was good. I'd be interested to dive in more into Paul Dillon and his influences and stuff like that.

Obviously, he's from Ireland, so he's probably influenced by a lot of the 80s and 90s English synthy wave.

@20:42 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

His voice reminds me of Depeche Mode, Joy Division, that kind of I've been listening to a ton of 80s synth stuff lately.

I think that's how I found it. My algorithm was like, hey, you've been listening to The Cure and all this stuff, so let's go deep and find

It's pretty rad. I love this song. The other song that's been released on streaming is amazing as well, but I'm not going to play that too.

But I think I am going to buy this album because I really do. And I listened to Eye in Power, the one from 2024.

I listened to What Happened. It's good. It's really good.

@21:21 - Sebastian

I think the takeaway that I want to share with you and with the listeners that we have is that this is possibly one of the best times in history to be an artist of anything, whether it's music, writing, filming.

There's so many avenues to make a career and to express yourself. You know, you don't need agents. You don't need a corporate person to, like, fund your project.

You can do stuff so much with just all of the apps that are at your disposal.

@22:00 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Like people have filmed an entire movie using an iPhone, right?

@22:03 - Sebastian

Like you can do all this stuff now, like the technology is there for the common man to really realize their creative needs and wants in their own psyche, right?

So there is no, the barrier to entry to express yourself globally is so much smaller than it ever used to be as an artist, I believe anyways.

So, you know, I love watching and listening to like all these independent artists that I've never heard before. That's why I religiously listen to Release Radar and Discover Weekly every week on Spotify, because I've been in a situation where I've been listening to something.

like, hey, I kind of like the song. And I look at the band and they don't have a single song over like 2000 listens.

@22:51 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I know.

@22:51 - Sebastian

And like, where did this band come from?

@22:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm like, these guys are not known by anybody, but I, how did the, how did this get onto my thing?

@22:57 - Sebastian

How did this get into my algorithm? Exactly. So, and I guess we also want to be kind of a platform to experience everything from the most popular to the people down to the artists that no one's ever heard of before and everything in between.

@23:13 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, absolutely. No stone unturned.

@23:15 - Sebastian

No stone unturned. Cast the first stone. That's a COC song, isn't Speaking of COC, they have new song. Yeah, I haven't heard it yet, though.

@23:25 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It sounds a lot like the 2006 record, In the Arms of God.

@23:31 - Sebastian

Okay.

@23:32 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And that's not my most favorite COC album of all time.

@23:36 - Sebastian

What is it? What's the one before? It's not Wise Blood.

@23:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

What's the one before Wise Blood? The before Wise Blood is Deliverance. Deliverance. Yeah.

@23:42 - Sebastian

Deliverance is so good.

@23:43 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And then there was America's Volume Dealer in 2000.

@23:45 - Sebastian

I don't Deliverance is like their Magnus Opa album, and I think it's the best album.

@23:49 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, Blood's really good, too, but I don't know. I don't know. I didn't finish the song. I love them at all, but it wasn't for me.

Yeah. The song's good. It just wasn't for me. I like their slower, more Doom-y stuff, and this was not that.

@24:04 - Sebastian

Yeah, they are a bit of a Doom metal band, I guess. They definitely play in that thing.

@24:09 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It can be, absolutely.

@24:14 - Sebastian

Paul Dillon.

@24:15 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm a big fan of Paul Dillon. Good. And I want to dig deep into everything he does, all his influences, I'm in.

@24:25 - Sebastian

Because, yeah, I just want music.

@24:29 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm craving it. I'm kind of writing again, and it's just fun.

@24:32 - Sebastian

Yeah, Mike started exploring going back into his songwriting roots here. So stay tuned for a bunch of stuff.

@24:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Writing some riffs, but I'm also, you know, say what you will, I'm using AI to help me, but I just don't have the facilities to do a full band by myself.

@24:48 - Sebastian

Yeah, we have talked about AI many times, and it's just, it's the next thing, right? It's the next thing.

@24:55 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's not going away.

@24:56 - Sebastian

It's next technology, and you either... You're Thank Buy into it and adapt and make it a part of your life, or you get left behind, is unfortunately the way it is, right?

@25:06 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's the next Google, it's the next iPhone, it's the next thing, right, and I kind of, like, I have this little room set up, I got all my junk, my guitars on the wall, and I can just plug it in, and I play all the guitars, I play it all, and I record it all myself, and then I just plunk it in, and say that I want this, this, this, this, and this, this.

Put it together, extend this, yeah. Yeah, and then I'd, you know, go through, well, 40 different iterations, then I'm like, I like that one, kind of like what a producer would do, kind of, in way, but whatever.

@25:39 - Sebastian

So have you deleted anything?

@25:41 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No deleting, no deleting, I got lots of garbage, I got lots of garbage on there, lots of garbage, anyways, that episode, that's, I think that's 88.

@25:51 - Sebastian

That is, yep, we're moving through it, so.

@25:54 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

And I'm, I'm going to stop, because I feel a big sneeze coming on, and a coughing fit, and this is.

That's I can handle. So anywhere you can stream music, Spotify, Apple, wherever, PMAD's there, Bandcamp, just search PMAD, which is the letter P-M-A-D.

@26:11 - Sebastian

Show him some love and support.

@26:12 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Show him some love because he deserves it. He seems like a hardworking guy and he's put out lots and lots of music.

@26:18 - Sebastian

So yeah. Yes.

@26:18 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

that.

@26:20 - Sebastian

Okay.

@26:20 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Bye. Bye. Oh my God. Well, for sticking through it, Mike. That was tough. I stopped talking like an hour before we started.

oh my God, Sherry's talking to me. I'm like, I can't talk. I need to save my voice for Sam.

Sorry.

@26:38 - Sebastian

And she's just like, Hey, what do you think about this? You're just like, uh, I'm sweating. Can you stop talking to me, please?

So leave me alone woman.

@26:48 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So yeah. So that's that. So yeah, come here and then we'll, we'll get ready to go. I'll show you, I'll show you my room.

I'll show you my setup when you come.

@26:56 - Sebastian

So I never showed Oh, that'd be awesome. No, I don't think so. No, you didn't. We just spent. And all of time, just on the couch, basically.

That's it, yeah. Yeah, I'm going to leave between 8 and 8.30, and then I'll just message you when I'm on my way.

@27:09 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, if you even hear it by 12.30, that's fine.

@27:11 - Sebastian

I should be there by 12.

@27:13 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I can't figure. We can't check into our hotel until 4, so there's no sense leaving before 2. It's going to be cold.

We're not going to go hang out by the lake because it's going to be cold.

@27:22 - Sebastian

It's maybe.

@27:23 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No, it won't be frozen.

@27:25 - Sebastian

Maybe not frozen, but yeah.

@27:26 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's been like spring until today.

@27:29 - Sebastian

Has it snowed? Yeah, I'm bringing the snow.

@27:32 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm bringing the pain. It snowed yesterday for five minutes, and it melted. And now it's just clear and dry and cold and windy.

Windy cold.

@27:44 - Sebastian

Well, it's good for my drive.

@27:45 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Oh, it'll be fun. Even when we came home on Sunday because it snowed the night before, and I was like, .

@27:50 - Sebastian

Well, it snowed here last night, actually.

@27:52 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Did it really?

@27:53 - Sebastian

Yeah, it didn't stick, though.

@27:54 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No.

@27:55 - Sebastian

Was it last night or the night before?

@27:57 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

So, if you want, you can look at the highway cams on DriveVC. Tomorrow?

@29:02 - Sebastian

Was it DriveBC?

@29:04 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah.

@29:13 - Sebastian

Cameras. Where do they have...

@29:19 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Look up Highway 5. Look, Highway 5. Oh, my God. It's not terrible, but I just want you to urge caution.

If it looks like a blizzard and there's like crazy going on, just honestly.

@29:35 - Sebastian

Highway 5 where? Hope?

@29:38 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Just Highway 5. So if you go like on my phone, I'm looking at just at the highways. I'm looking at all Highway 5.

Just keep going north.

@29:48 - Sebastian

Like on the camera?

@29:49 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah. I'm to see if I can get it on my thing and I'll share it.

@29:55 - Sebastian

Oh. I have to put a start and an end duration, right?

@30:05 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

on, hang on.

@30:13 - Sebastian

Oops. Dude, why am I looking at it on my phone?

@30:17 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I can just look it up on my computer.

@30:19 - Sebastian

What am I doing?

@30:20 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I just did the same thing.

@30:22 - Sebastian

I got an entire computer at my desk and I'm looking it up on DriveBC cameras.

SCREEN SHARING: Michael started screen sharing - WATCH

@30:29 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Can you see this? Can you see my screen?

@30:31 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@30:33 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Okay, so Othello looks a little snowy.

@30:37 - Sebastian

Why is it not coming up?

@30:39 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Can you see...

@30:42 - Sebastian

Oh, there we go. I got it.

@30:44 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Do you have it on yours?

@30:45 - Sebastian

Yeah.

@30:46 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Okay, I'll get rid of this.

ACTION ITEM: Check DriveBC Hwy 5 cams 7:30 before departure; then message Mike on departure - WATCH

@30:48 - Sebastian

There's Othello, Porsche, Box Cannon. Doesn't look too bad.

@30:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

No. I don't know what it's supposed to do overnight, but... what it's I wanna There Just look at them in the morning before you come, and it'll make me happy.

@31:04 - Sebastian

I will.

@31:05 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

You can exercise caution. I'll forget, but I will. I know. I'm going to remind you.

@31:08 - Sebastian

Don't worry. Did you look at the drive cameras? was like, yes.

@31:12 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

All I'm going to say is look at the drive cameras, and that's it. I'll do it at like 730 in the morning.

@31:18 - Sebastian

It all looks pretty clear, I think.

@31:21 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

It's not terrible. It's the other idiots you got to go for, right? It's the other morons. morons.

@31:33 - Sebastian

Coca-Cola. I mean, it looks like there's a bit of snow on there.

@31:36 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah.

@31:37 - Sebastian

Like the Coca-Cola Summit. Right?

@31:41 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yep.

@31:43 - Sebastian

Where is that one?

@31:45 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

But you're probably making the right choice coming here instead of going to Kelowna because that I think so. That connector highway is awful.

@31:51 - Sebastian

I'm worried about driving through the mountains.

@31:53 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Especially coming down that gigantic hill. Yeah, no. Come here. It's easier.

@32:04 - Sebastian

Yeah, I mean, I'm sure it'll be fine.

@32:07 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

I'm sure.

@32:09 - Sebastian

Five day forecast minus one tomorrow. A few flurries ending late this evening and partly cloudy. Local one subject minus wind chill minus 19 overnight.

Wednesday mixes sun and cloud. Windy east 20 kilometers high minus one. Wind chill minus 18 in the morning and minus seven in the afternoon.

Wednesday night, we'll be there by... I think we'll be fine.

@32:35 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

We're going to get on the road Thursday morning pretty early because Cooper wants to be at school by lunchtime by 11.

@32:39 - Sebastian

Yeah, yeah, that's fine. Yeah, whenever you want. It's all good.

@32:43 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

All right.

@32:44 - Sebastian

Yeah. All right. I'll see you tomorrow morning.

@32:48 - Mandatory Music (mandatorymusicshow@gmail.com)

Yeah, man. I'll see you at lunchtime, whatever.

@32:50 - Sebastian

Yeah, you bet. I'll message you when I leave and then I'll give you a good sense of when I'm going to be there.

Okay. That's cool, bro. All right. Bye. Ciao. go.
