The fastest way to misunderstand 24.7 HUNT is to assume it happened overnight. We sit down with the guys to tell the real origin story: growing up hunting in different states, chasing mallards and greenheads beyond what home could offer, and starting to film hunts with whatever camera they could get their hands on. We're going to talk about duck hunting, talking about good times, how they got started, the history on how the 24-7 group got together and got into shooting greenheads. The First Push Behind 24-7

guys, once again, thank you guys for coming today and being here. I know we got the fishing derby tomorrow. That's gonna be a lot of fun. But one thing I've never seen or never been told is how you guys got started from the very beginning. I mean, how did that initial push start?

Yeah, man, we uh I don't know, we all probably grew up, we we all definitely grew up hunting. Um, and so that's one thing people don't know. They I guess they all feel like we kind of just got started. But jumped in. Yeah. Uh you know, I'm from Georgia, Aubrey's from Georgia, uh, you know, Ricky, he's from Louisiana, Sean's from Georgia, uh, uh and Daryl's from Arkansas. So we all just grew up hunting different stuff, you know what I mean? But uh definitely it's been our passion. Um, and then uh man, just growing up for me personally, I just always wanted to hunt, you know, find find a way to hunt for a living. Because I never understood why we had to wait for the weekend to hunt.

You know, you only got Saturday, Sunday, and then it's time to go back to school. You know, daddy's got to go to work. And uh, so that just never felt fair to me. You know what I mean? Um, and so that was just my main goal. It's all sat always sat in the back of my mind. So after when I graduated college, I kind of uh wanted to just start filming. I just start filming with a couple buddies back home, traveling a little bit. We would go to Arkansas, um, you know, hunting some fields and that kind of thing. Uh it's kind of a thing to do back in back in Georgia. We always used to come and out out in Arkansas and rent fields and stuff like that. Hunt down in Venice, Louisiana quite a bit. Uh, and you know, I I just had a camcorder. My mom bought me a video camera. Uh, I shot a couple little hunting videos. And it was What years were those? Man, that was shoot. I graduated college in 15. So yeah, that was like 15, 16, 2015, 16, something like that. Um, and so, and obviously, that was when I got the camera, you know. Uh, before that, you know, we would always just come out here on breaks in the high school and stuff like that.

Um, but man, I just fell in love with the greenhead. Like, I I wanted to start filming more, like my dad and my uncles and stuff like that, uh, too. But man, as I got older, I realized they really weren't hunting as much as they used to or getting together as much, you know. Just so it was kind of hard to tell their story. And uh, man, just to make a long story short, uh just always try to find a way to kill some more greenheads. And I uh came out here and you know, met Daryl. Uh, you know, me and Aubrey kind of hunted a little bit together in high school. And then, you know.

So y'all was kind of close then. Yeah.

Yeah, we were 20 minutes apart. Yeah. So we hunted a good bit together in high school. Um, I didn't hunt with Sean in high school. Me and him were just always running around partying together. And uh, and so, you know, and going to college, I went my way, Aubrey went his. So we kind of, you know, naturally kind of fell apart. We didn't really go to the same schools. We were just honestly the only two black dudes around our town that hunted. And so, but he went, you know, he went to another school, and I I went to another school, so we didn't really get the kick and much. But after that, we kind of got back together. And uh by that time, my greenhead, you know, infatuation grew a lot. And man, I met Daryl Moore, the famous Daryl Moore. And uh dummy that man, Instagram. Instagram. Uh back back then it was Instagram was super, you know how it was. It was just super like small, knitting community, I feel like, especially with hunting. Um, and then you know, so just seeing Daryl on there, you know, I grew up hunting wood ducks, just like everybody kind of where we're from. We all agree. So, like, man, that that, you know, eager to eagerness to want to kill more greenheads kind of grew for me. And so I just figured out, like, man, you can't kill them renting fields in Arkansas. Like, it just got less and less, you know, easier to do. Like, I was like, man, I gotta be in the wood, I gotta be in the woods. You gotta go to them. And so I uh my we just left my buddy Caleb's house. Caleb uh justice, man, he he he's had been coming out here his whole high school career and uh you know, uh young adult career. And he was the first one that took me to flood of timber in Arkansas. And um, he was hunting public. Obviously, like he showed me, but it it was just one of those things. I was just too young to really just like roll with him and just go with him all the time. But so me and my dad hunting with him like once or twice. And then I, you know, when we and me and Daryl met, I figured out that Daryl's hunting, hunting that same type of stuff every weekend. So I'm like, man, that's where I need to be. And so my buddies back home, they just couldn't go as much as I wanted to. And uh man, just always looking for that brother. You know, I know I've I had a sister growing up, but you know, meeting Daryl uh at that time of my life was like one of the big urges to like want to like always drive out here every weekend. So me and him got tight, and then uh man, the rest is history after that, man, he introduced me to Ricky and I introduced them to Aubrey, and then after that, man, we just all clicked clicked. Yeah, just meant and you know, we met Daryl's other friends, they're all cool. So we're all just kind of like rolling together. We all young, you know, don't know much, learning together.

And uh man, just we just continue to learn, you know. Um, so like it kind of started as a passion project, but I think it just blew up more than we kind of, I mean, I ain't gonna say we didn't expect it to do well, but it definitely like it just took off, man.

It just started with an idea and then kind of just grew into something that just kind of expanded.

Why It Took Off Naturally

I think I think too, it's because it was so natural, you know. Like we weren't forcing it, you know, we weren't trying to like, you see, a lot of people start stuff now and they just want to like, they're trying to, they're trying to make it happen overnight. You know what I'm saying? Like we all got together and we were just having fun, right? We were just truly enjoying hanging out with each other, duck hunting, going out to eat, just being with each other, right? So it's like genuine love when we did it, you know. So I feel like a lot of guys like when they start off or whatever, they're trying to force it too hard. Yeah, that's why it doesn't like do what it needs to do.

I could definitely see that. Yeah, especially y'all linking up, you know, you wanted to hunt Markansall, you know, footed timber type, yeah, going after greenheads. Yep. Daryl's already doing that, you know, and then it was just a perfect mixture in the middle. 100%.

So man, we just kind of start getting more ways to, you know, I finally Daryl had a boat or something, I can't really remember, and I figured out how to I, you know, you always I I met a couple people before Daryl, and uh, you know, no shade to him or nothing like that, but you know, you get where you know, I'm you know, I'm a type of person, I'm always gonna pay my way. I might not have the boat or whatever, but I'm gonna put the gas in your boat. I'm gonna put gas in your book. I know, I know what you mean.

So, you know, if I feel like you're trying to look at me in a way that I'm using you or something like that, then I'm just gonna figure, I'm gonna get my own stuff for sure. Like it's I'm gonna do that regardless, but it's gonna it's gonna make it faster. And so when I finally got my own boat, me and that's when me and Daryl just kind of like just took off with a wind. Like, we just didn't really start, we didn't really hunt with other people that much. We just kind of like started going to figure out stuff on our own. And um, yeah, man, it was it was just fun. Just so, man, we didn't really have nobody teach us kind of, you know. We had people here and there. Like, I didn't hunt with my buddy Caleb a lot. I know Daryl had some older guys that he hunted with a little bit, but you know, just going with them all the time wasn't a thing. You know, we can go here and there. Yeah, but man, as far as like learning different places and all this, like, man, we ain't had nobody teach us none of this stuff. A bunch of trial and error.

A bunch, dude. A bunch of trial and error. You know how that goes. Like anytime you go get into something, you're gonna run into problems. 100%.

Trial And Error On The River

like I was just gonna say, I feel like too, like with us, it was like once we like we like you had all these like popular public land spots, right? That everybody knows about. You know, we we tried all that, but like where we wanted to go was like we went to hunt the river a lot. And like, dude, I'd say now we probably got a book of like holes and stuff that we pretty much know we're gonna go kill ducks. Yeah, 97% of the time we go, right? You know, people don't realize how much how many times we went and we weren't killing ducks and how much time we actually spent on that river. You know, like to really learn it, like to really, really learn it. Like we spent, I don't know, time and hours and trials and a lot of failed hunts. Failed hunts, boats, you know, motors breaking down, like everybody going different directions. I mean, we got to where at one point we get lost in the fog. Yeah, getting lost, like all separated. There's no phone service, you know, on that river. Yeah, most most of the time. So like once you get lost, like you're just separated. Like, yeah, then like it's like all right, then we start figuring out everybody needs to have decoys in their boats, right? Because if we do get separated, you can go, you still hunt and make something happen until you can figure out where everybody's at or whatever. Or split and like sometimes it'd be like Renard and Arby gonna go here, me and Rick go there, me and Sean, whoever we just gonna split to figure out the next day been we together. I mean, we spent so much time and effort and then miles driven. Yeah, and then people look at like I mean, I feel like a lot of people look at like stuff we do now and what we rod in and drive and think like, hey man, they got a bunch of money and all that, but people don't realize like, bro, we started with like nothing.

And a lot of that's because of social media. Yeah, like if people seen you guys out there doing that in real life, not just social media, yeah, they would look at it different.

Yeah, they will, they will, they will. And that's a that's a gift and a curse by growth and like growing how fast we grew. Uh it's a blessing, but it's definitely like, man, if you ain't got a sturdy backbone, which I don't, you know, I I'm probably the weakest link in my crew. Like I take a lot of stuff personal, yeah, yeah, 1000%. Because I know how much me and my buddies like want to hunt. Like, we just want to hunt and we want to be successful. So when you see them on there, they're you know talking crap.

If you want to it pisses me off, you gotta feel like you gotta correct them. It doesn't get you nowhere.

It don't, it don't, but I don't know And then you're the bad guy because they're like, yeah, everybody's you need you need to learn how to turn the cheeks like, all right, well, at what point do you like, all right, you it's too much, it's too much. At the end of the day, I'm a man.

So that's the that's the thing. Like, I think the spotlight got on us a little too fast. Um, because people don't realize we're we and we still are like in a learning, super like in a huge learning phase with where we're going to hunt and like you know, where we want to hunt and stuff like that. And so the spotlight's on us, but that don't mean we got it figured out. And not one time. I know what you mean by that. We we've never jumped on there and said, do this, do that. You gotta do this to kill. Like, we we're we're not really like, man, we're just documenting what we do and having fun together. Yeah, we ain't telling nobody how to kill nothing. Like, never claim that we're the best. Like, you know what I mean? And uh, and so, but people don't I think that gets a little foggy when you show up at, you know, front page magazine of of a sicker you know, thing, or you know, got Yeti kind of pushing you and stuff like that, backing you and stuff like that. But you know, I guess people don't, you know, they don't really see the other side. You know, we we do a lot of community stuff, just like this fish and derby. And so that's what these brands and and these companies like most about us, because we bring a lot of people together. Um, and we do a lot of things for the youth from from you know, it's so much. And you know, I we don't need a pat on the back. We just like doing that stuff. Right. And uh, but yeah, so that that's just kind of what makes it tough, man. Um, just growing in the spotlight. It's like it happened fast.

Yeah, it does, it did. Like once y'all got together, I mean, and got clicking and hunting, putting out videos, it was like it blew up quick.

100%, 100%. And so, like Darren was saying, it takes a lot to learn one place, actually, one stretch of river. Like, we're still learning. Oh, yeah. We don't bounce around a lot just because we want to know a place up and down, and we hunting the river. So, I mean, it ain't controlled by it ain't one of these WMAs all over the U.S. that's controlled, and you know, you know what it's gonna be like. I mean, one year we might have water, one year we might not. One year we might it might be, you know, middle middleways of water in the woods. It's just different. And you know, and that's what Daryl's talking about with that book. Like, we gotta keep notes. And um, now we're learning, man, you can't you can't be in Arkansas all year on our stretch of river trying to kill them. Like you gotta move around. And that's what you know, now we travel all over the place, and now we got a book all over the place, you know what I mean?

And so do you do you feel like ever there's like a pressure? Like you're here in Arkansas during this time, and like say you get here and it's not right, or it's you know, do you feel like a pressure where it's like, dang, we gotta find the ducks quick because like everybody, you know, people are waiting for us, they're they're looking at our stuff, we gotta get on them.

Man, I I'd be lying if I say it wasn't. But that's when we gotta kind of get together and be like, man, we we're doing this because we like to be together and hunt. Yeah, you know what I'm saying? Um, and so there's pressure too, just because I mean, every one of these guys are competitive. And so they challenge their self every day. And they, you know, they're I tell you right now, he wants to kill more ducks this upcoming year than he did last year. And so I mean, there's pressure on that, more pressure there than in anything, too. You know what I mean? So, like, yeah, we're trying to just, I mean, we want to see, we want to see cool stuff, and you know, ain't nothing cooler than a bunch of mallets flying in your face.

Yeah. No, there ain't. I think, I think like we're all such competitive guys too. Like, it's it's more like Renard saying, like, it's but it's in ourselves more than anything. Like, there is a little bit of pressure where like we don't go, you know, a few days without killing them, like killing them. I say kill them, like we're gonna kill a few every day, right? But like kill them, kill them. It's like between like episodes and stuff like that, you know, like getting videos out, and because people want to see that, right? So it's like you almost kind of sometimes realize, all right, man, like you can't let it become a job. Right. Too much of a job, right? You don't want it to become like, dude, I gotta, we gotta kill them. Cause then you start doing dumb stuff like just stupid stuff to kill a duck, right?

And then it's not as like it's well for one, it's not as enjoyable. Yeah, right. But the videos also aren't gonna be as good because it's not as real, right? Like it's not as authentic, you know.

Yeah, and so like for us, it's like, all right, we go out west and shoot some ducks and like we have fun with it. It's like sometimes we like last year we didn't do very as much video and but I feel like it was we had a lot more fun in a way because it wasn't like all right, no pressures much stakes, just yeah. Let's just go enjoy it and do what we do, you know. Yeah, just be in the moment. Yeah, so I don't know. It's it's a it's a double-edged sword. Cause you know, I love I love to kill them. I absolutely agree. You don't love to kill them. There ain't too many more people that want to kill them more than me outside our group. No, there is truck, you burn and did I get pissed out. Oh, we'll I mean this dude here drive 20 some hours before I will. Straight.

Weather Windows And Real Life Jobs

Man, you and too, we didn't learn so much. It's we didn't learn that you know, weather is driven. And so now we we really try to spend and we all we got kids and families and wives. So, you know, now we really have to choose our time and you know, yeah. So that's another one of those learning things. Now we learned, okay, we ain't got two weeks to sit on the road and just burn for no reason. Yeah, you know, so if we're gonna take two weeks, well, all right, let's go when the weather's absolutely prime. Right. Me, you talked about it before with everything, fishing, whatever it is. Yep. Now it's like if the weather ain't right, if everything's not lined up, ain't no point. Yeah, no point. But when it is right, gotta go. We're going. And we didn't learn too. We used to leave, right? We had jobs. We had to we had to leave. Yeah, you know, we barely had jobs. We was barely keeping them, but we had jobs.

Yeah, I mean, like, I I I kind of know a little bit how it was for you, but like during that time when y'all are working jobs and like trying to do this on the side, like, I mean, how do you balance that? Man, starting family.

I'm trying to tell you right now, he's going, he, he's probably he's the last one in the crew we we're getting out of the nine to five gig. And so he's still he's battling it right now. So he's in it. It's probably he's the best one to tell you, like, because he's in it still, you know what I mean? Like tough.

Yeah, so what I do a lot of the time is um I work uh for the government on base um for the military, but from the for the civilian side. So like uh I kind of got it good where I work at, it's like a balance because um I don't take a lot off during the year. Like right now, summertime, everyone's taking off me. I rarely take off. I accumulate all my PTO. Everybody knows hunting season, I'm gone. Whenever one of them gives me a call and say, Come on, I'm gone. And like my job, um, they're real cool with time off and they know what I do. So, you know, I kind of got it really good because I can just go at a like a little time. So, you know, so I mean because you kind of gotta have that.

Yeah, yeah. To be able to balance it, make it work. I mean, you gotta have the flexibility. Yeah, definitely.

100%. So just saving, like he's saying, saving days, stretching the box man thin, you know what I mean?

Working, working overtime. Uh then when I work for overtime, I don't do it for like the extra pay. Every time I work overtime, I do it for like uh comp time, which is like you know, another day off.

Yeah, you're just freeing up more days.

Yeah. Because when it's right, you got I mean, we got I can tell how many times we like be killing them. I can think of one place right now we freaking, me and Renar, we killed them every day for like three days in a row. We left, came back, it was still the same thing, and we should have stayed for like two weeks straight and just enjoyed it. It ain't been the same since. No. I mean, it ain't been close to the same. It ain't and so like, and it's it's like that every time we do something. I mean, I can think a lot uh two years ago we was up uh at up with Brad at his place. We same thing. We should have stayed, and it wasn't the same. Like we left early, and then the next year we came back, nothing. Nothing. So we didn't learn now, like you when it's right and the weather's right, you you just gotta tell the family, tell everybody like look, this has got to be, I gotta come to me.

I mean, it's like that with everything too. It ain't even just like ducks, like when the fishing's right on a certain spot, you gotta be there. I mean, that was last year, Kaney. Think about what's the fishing them back. Everything. When it's right, you gotta be there. That's 100%. And it's not only like when it's right, where it's right and when. Yeah, yeah. 100%. You guys, you know, like Daryl, you live here in Arkansas. I mean, there's travel involved for what y'all do. Pretty much no matter where you're going, somebody's got travel.

So the way y'all like coordinate all that, you know, y'all gotta have strategy. Yeah.

And then it's like getting the boats there. Cause it's like with Duck Hunting, it's like, all right, you gotta get if there's six people going, you got two dolls, you got camera guys. Like, you gotta get all that stuff there. So we're still trying to figure that part of like how can we make it even easier, you know. Um, so that's what we're trying to work on now, is like, hey, at what point do you like, all right, dude? Everybody needs two boats. So you can leave one way over there, yeah, one way over there, and then you can just get there, you know. All you gotta do is travel. Travel. Yeah. And figure it out. You know, that's kind of the next phase of life. And then if you do dry fill, that's a whole nother ballgame. Yeah. And that's when we got into that. Like, we got dry fill stuff, you know, because you're doing stuff. It's like the more you grow, the more you do, which means the more money you spend, the more stuff you have to have, which makes it more complicated. Yep. You know, then you can't have no. We had good dogs, we had Bella and Pete. Like, we had two great dogs, and then we're starting over with new dogs, right? Yeah, and that's a whole nother part of the ballgame, you know. So it's just a and Aubrey had his dogs, and I don't know, dude. We it's stressful. People don't even realize what all goes into it.

No, no, because all they see, they just see that they just see that that, you know, all them green heads up on the tree. Yeah, then they come comments, and you know, whatever that's your internet, they run with it. Yeah. I know y'all gotta have thick skin too. Very thick. In today's age, man, it does not matter what it is, who it is, there's like one side that loves it. Yeah, and there's one side that absolutely hates it. Yeah, yeah. Thousand percent.

I tell people all the time that you can't beat the internet. So whatever you, whatever you say, or whatever you post, you gotta be mindful of you can comment back, but there's when you comment back, they're gonna come up with something else and they're gonna keep coming. It never ends.

And then people don't people don't realize camera angles too. Like they'll be like, it looks like that's so far away, or that looks so high. You're like, dude, that's a it's a camera.

Yeah, like duh is gonna look different in person. Yeah, you put different lenses on it, lens, everything. Yeah.

Don't let them, don't let you do something that they do too, but it's only and you just want negative coming now. Everybody thinks it's bad. You're like, all right, yeah, I I just seen y'all do that the other day, and y'all are hunting right across from me. Exactly. That's right. Yeah, but now it's bad because we did it.

Well, you know, it's like the thing about like you you have the same people that slide up and they hate on everything you post, blah, blah, blah, right? But it's like at the end of the day, that guy is like your number one supporter. Yeah. He ain't gonna miss a post. Hey, at all.

He's gonna he's gonna keep getting crazy. He's gonna keep sending it out. Thank thank you. They'll go online, man, they'll say some of the most craziest stuff about us. Like, stuff that we never even heard of. Like, I I can't think of, you know, one incident. You know, one guy, this happened maybe like two or three years ago. We were at the boat ramp, my truck broke down. Uh, and guy gets online. This is like literally last year. The guy gets online and says that So Albert's truck is broken. And I'm I'm elbow deep. The my alternator went out. So we're changing the alternator and the guy he asked me, did we need help? And I said, No, man, we got it. So then people sometimes forget like, man, sometimes if it's not us being rude to them, you know, but we be tired. You know, we might if it's January 20th, yeah. Been hunting since September. I'm not ready to go home.

We just don't film it a lot. Like we all deer hunt, every last one of us. We love it to death. And man, when we're out there killing ducks, we kind of get mad. We kind of get mad, you know. Uh uh Sean shot a good deer last year. Um, you know, Daryl went with y'all. I mean, but then you get you miss out on some duck hunting a little bit too. You do, man. So it's just like you know, you kind of gotta, I don't know, but I know one thing. I'm probably I'm out of duck hunting on like uh mid to late October and through the middle of November rut. I ain't gonna be duck hunting. I'm gonna be deer hunting. I miss it.

And I'm like, that's what I look for. So and as of late, we always been somewhere trying to kill a duck somewhere.

Definitely is. And I like that too about deer hunting, that solitude. Like, I had no problem sitting there for three, four days and just knowing it's kind of a break for you in a way. Like, and you know, we live in the South, it ain't like we're in Iowa somewhere, and you ain't gonna see 20, 30 deer on a sit. Like, you lucky if you see two.

You know, we we'll argue amongst each other about going to some of them places, but I just I me personally, I I don't I don't want to be there. And so I just move around. And don't get me started on all the where the ducks are thing, because I I feel like I that's one thing I am a super opinionated about, and I feel like I know the reason for all that, but I ain't trying to get chopped and screwed up.

You just gotta go to where they're you gotta leave your state. Pretty much like I mean we're from Georgia, so our our state bird. Yeah, we've been figured out. Yeah, our state, our state bird is a wood duck. So if you, you know, obviously you can kill wood ducks and you can kill, you know, some stray mallards that's you know that flown in, or you can kill a few divers here and there. Uh but we knew growing up, like, I needed to leave the state of Georgia to go kill ducks. I can't I can't stay here and say, oh, I want to kill mallards, I want to kill redheads, I want to kill this, that no, I had I need to go. So when you see people online that will sit there and complain about not having the resources or or they'll blame it on the DNR for not planting you know refuges and and taking care of stuff, it's like, okay, yeah, I get that part of it, but if you ain't got the weather and you ain't got the conditions, you're not gonna get ducks. So you gotta move. So that's just my take on it.

I'm driving my boat plus another 50 boats. We're driving past these ducks rafted on the water in the corn. They ain't moving, they ain't getting up until they're ready to get up. Now they do get up and they go to the rest area, but like that's saying a couple things. One thing it's definitely saying too, it ain't it ain't the motors. The motors ain't the boats and the motors ain't scaring these ducks. Now, I do know like when you go to places where they're not conditioned to hearing boats and seeing boats, yeah, you're gonna you're gonna scare some ducks. I'm not trying to say that, but I will just say, like, you know, a mallet ain't no different than a deer that can be conditioned to, you know, whatever.

But like, I guess I'm just saying, like, man, I didn't seen I didn't roll right past a pile of ducks and I done done it, you know, for a week straight and they don't and they don't move. And so like, and they're in that corn having a ball, you know what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying?

And so he'll fire his boat up and leave, but he ain't, I mean, it when he fires that boat up, the mallards ain't flying up and getting out of the timber. You know what I mean? They they they're there eating aprons and and and loafing and having fun. And so, like, I don't know, man. I just think it's a lot of opinions and not enough hunting. I guess that's what I'm kind of getting at. Uh just like, man, just go hunt. Like, everything changes, just be, I mean, it it wouldn't be fun if it didn't change, you know what I'm saying?

Because there's no way that and plus, if like say you take a week off, right, from work and you go hunt, and it's bad, not the best weather. I mean, you're not gonna have good results. Yeah. So no, you're gonna blame everything you possibly can. And then, like, net from that point on, say you're hunting only weekends, yeah, that you get off work, and it's like and the weather may not be good, and there's also 150 other people at that boat ramp. In fact, I mean, y'all know how it is like hunting public, especially when it's weekend versus middle of the week.

I mean, I it there used to never be a field that didn't have water and a little bit of stubble or something in it. Now, during duck season, I mean, I ain't trying to put a percentage on it, but there I I see fields all the time. They're just dry, like all of them. No water, no food, no nothing. And so it's just like, I mean, I don't know what I mean, a duck ain't gonna just land in mud, I feel like. You know what I'm saying? Why would it?

Yeah, mud with no food. Yeah, ain't no way. I think like like Renard was saying, we when we come from Georgia coming into Memphis, man, we see ducks all over the place. I think like farm practices have changed a lot too. You know, back in the day, they had tractors and combines that would pick, you know, up whatever they were harvesting.

Back at home. They'll leave stuff behind, you know, because they miss it. But now these new tractors that you're spending two, three million dollars on, they ain't leaving a drop. You know, they're picking up everything. So it's like 2% or something, like, yeah, they're picking up everything. So these ducks, I mean, they you kind of see it with snow geese and and and specs too. Like they'll hit a field, they may be in that field for two days scattered out trying to find food, and they may find here and there, but they're not gonna stick around very long. And I'm not, and then I'm not a goose hunter, not at all. Uh yeah, I could care less about shooting a speck or a snow. I could eat a speck, but I ain't gonna eat no snow. Uh so but yeah, that's a I mean you pay attention to those too, because uh like you'll see them all over the place, and then they'll be here for one day, and the next thing you know, they'll be long gone.

I think there's so many reasons why the duck hunting isn't as great for a certain group of people with that, like, you know, it's just all those reasons, you know what I mean? It's a lot, and then you know, we didn't name them all, but I there's there's several, you know what I'm saying? Um, so the the corn thing to me, it's a it's definitely a gift and a curse. Like I can tell you this if I had private property, I'd have me some flooded corn. Double road, I wouldn't have private property property and not have flooded corn. So I don't know what y'all want.

Like, like we're saying, and you know, I don't want to say I'm blaming everything on flooded corn, but it's just like one of those things where, you know, and it's not a blame game. I think reasons, just pointing out reasons why ducks act or how they act, from what I've observed. Like it's years that, you know, we're on the river early season and the river's flooded early. So I think that offers ducks a lot more food and places to be. And so a duck ain't dumb, you know. Once they get to a place that they want to be, they ain't just trying to keep flying. You know what I mean? Yeah, they're just looking for a place. So whether they hit that flood of corn or a patch of woods in the middle of nowhere on the river that nobody ain't gonna find, they're gonna stay, they're gonna stay where they're gonna stay put. And so it's one of them things where it's like, man, early flood on the river, we see a lot of success there. If it floods late, it's tough to, it's tough to get dust to come on down because I mean they ain't got no reason to leave wherever they already are. You know what I mean?

I think that's most of it. Yeah, I think it's just a reason to leave. You know, if it gets cold real late in a year, it's like they'll tough it out, man. Yeah, they're gonna they're gonna stay till they can't stay no more.

And I don't know the sales numbers, like with uh people coming to Arkansas to duck hunt versus other states, but I just feel like there's a lot more people here to duck hunt. So y'all fact check that. But uh they're gonna eat you up. Just just seeing just seeing the resources the other states put behind ducks versus here. I mean, it's night and day. And I and you know, you get some of these states, I ain't trying to drop names on states, but I mean, like we're just saying, like, I mean, there'll be public land flooded corn, flooded millet, flooded whatever. I ain't seen that in Arkansas ever. Me, I haven't. I I know there's probably maybe some places, but like where I hunt, I ain't seen it. And you know, they might have a place that's they call a rest area, but it don't look like the rest area that I just left and there's a two states over, four states over, you know what I'm saying? Like, so I don't think the resources are really getting.

I think Arkansas is definitely getting comfortable. Yeah. Well, they've been well, maybe not getting comfortable, I think they've been comfortable for so long, you know, just relying on natural resources, yeah. That you know, you you fall you start to fall behind the eight ball when it comes to these other states, because it is competitive, yeah. Especially with a bird that's gonna fly across all these states, yeah. Like, you know.

Yeah. So those private land people, I mean, their places are set up just like some of these public land spots that we've that we've seen, you know, with that are manicured and tailored to ducks. And so it's like, you know, if the public woods ain't set up like that, I mean, where would you want to be if you was a duck? You know what I mean? So it's like, I don't know, I guess that's above my pay grade. I ain't really into writing politicians and all that kind of stuff, whatever goes behind that. But I I mean, I just feel like that's one of the reasons too. So man, resources ain't they just ain't the same. You can you can compare night and day. And if I can name drop some states and some W Mays here, I would, just to give y'all like compare contrast, but I think that's there's just another reason on the list where you know here in Arkansas, you're fully dependent on Mother Nature.

So, how's that work? Like, how are y'all structuring it like as far as like shooting? Because some people show up and they're serious. Yeah, yeah, it's serious people.

So it's actually a sport and clay tournament.

Okay, it's actually like it's even the name is like which I we learned this because we just some good country boys. Like everything's a skeet shoot. Yeah, that's right.

We shoot and ski, we should play. Yeah, it's the it's a sporting clay event. So it's the same. If you know what a sporting clay event is, the same kind of terminology and same kind of rules. So I think it's like the Lewis class.

But you gotta, but you gotta explain the difference between a ski. What's a ski and a sporting clay? Yeah.

They all orange and fly.

In my experience, a ski is just like, you know, it just goes straight out in front of you, you know, from a clay pigeon or from a ski thrower or handheld thrower. Sporting clay is coming from all different directions.

Oh, they shoot from water. It's coming from the city.

And then you got then you got something called trap. Yeah, trap, and trap is out of the actual towers, you know. But that's just my correct me in my wrong comments, but I think that's what I'm pretty much putting out there.

So sporting clays, there's gonna it's gonna set up like golf. We're gonna have different stations. Yeah. And so they might be in the woods, you know, whatever.

Are they like different skill levels to it, or is it just like anybody come?

Anybody can come, but they all gotta shoot the same course. And so the so but every each station might be set up different. You might be, it might be easy to shoot one station, but the next station might be hard.

It might be coming from directly behind you. You never know.

So that's sporting clays, you know what I mean. So I just learned that this year, and uh it's a big deal to those guys. And so uh, yeah, is we had to put three, we got uh we'll have three different uh shooting slots. So uh a.m. uh lunchtime in the afternoon. Yeah. And so we'll give out a big prize for each one of those, and then the the winner of all three of those will get together and pretty much shoot off in front of everybody.

And so for the for the for the truck and stuff. So it'd be pretty cool. Talking about being nervous, dude. Yeah, no kidding shots, man.

You better be dialed in. It's gonna be like a handicap, right? So like golf, you know, like if you got championship flight, you know, that's where I'll be at, you know. I think it's a handicap. You can't let somebody shoot but eighty out of eighty.

But no, I you we talked about this in the you know, the people at the uh Meadows said this though, like, man, you might have a 10-year-old come up there and whoop everybody. So they don't get they don't get too much leeway.

Because it ain't a power thing, it's just a precision type of thing. Yeah, yeah. And you know, so they go to tournaments all the time where yeah, it might be a 10, 16, 15-year-old that he might be whooping up on people that's been shooting their whole life, you know, in their 40s and 50s. So it just depends.

I mean, what whoever's I hate for a 10-year-old to come to whoop me, whoop me and take home a hundred thousand dollar truck. You talking about mad? I'm pouring water in this tank. Boy, I'm talking about a real life lesson. We fixing do this. And then we also uh also, too, for the people that listen in uh for the tournament, we also have a prize for the person who shot the lowest score. So maybe Aubrey. Yeah, no. We got a special prize for somebody who shot the lowest score.

So you know, people can go out there. There's probably all right, so there's like two strategies you go in. Yeah, you know what I mean. You go in and you're like, you know, you ain't very good, you go for gold, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. You go for last. Yeah. Or you go in and you're like, maybe I can pull off first. But I gotta think, dude, there's probably people out there right now practicing getting ready. Hey, you know, it'd be funny if they're if you're gonna shoot for a truck, yeah.

I think so because you're talking about you're talking about putting like basically a thousand, thousand fish for the past three years, three thousand catfish. They ain't catching them all. Now, one year it was one dude, man. He he went, he told me he went for two weeks straight catching fish. He was every morning, every evening. It's old, old black dude. So he sit on a butt. They're perfect eating size, too. Yeah, yeah. They were. But last year, so last year they caught like, man, it was two, like what, five or six pounders them kids caught? And they didn't put them in there. Yeah, so them had them were then we're like before. Yeah. Because they don't they ain't putting nothing that big. You might get one, they slip out that they grow in there, but yeah, it was like three or four, five-pound cabin. Like one of them came out. I was like, No, yeah. I don't know where they even came from. Then the kid caught like a three-pound bass. I'm like, dang. So it's some fish still in there.

I mean, yeah, but the way we way we're gonna do it is like we letting them just weigh them as soon as they catch them. Instead of stringers because it's too much. Um, and then we just take their best five fish. So we're gonna put them on an Excel sheet and then we'll just add it up real quick.

After all the years we've been doing this, how many, how many, how many fish you done put into that pond?

Uh we should be about, this would be year three. So this would be we'll be about 3,000 this year. Dang. That's a lot of fish. We probably probably had, probably, I would say last year's the most fish they've caught in the derby. Because it was nuts the first 30 minutes. Like, I mean, that a couple of things.

It was like stabbed. Like, I swear it wasn't even like a minute. It was like a line of kids already had fish.

Like, as soon as they corks went, it was like Duda was there too. He was weighing fish. Me and him was a full-time job. These kids was running over fish.

Yeah, but Bubba built us a little thing this year where he ain't got even touching. Like, they bring him up there. Yeah, the problem with it is though, you know, a lot of kids like you're having to help get the fish off the rookie. Yeah, but it's fine, it's fun. Um, we got grass grown up on the pond, so I'm interested to see how that's gonna be. Um, because no way you can get rid of that stuff. So but we got a lot of food, I mean a lot of fish, a lot of snow cones. Got a bouncy house now, too. So kids gonna have fun.
