He's from Field and Stream, and we're gonna talk about fishing, and we're gonna more specifically, we're gonna talk about noodling. All right, he loves the noodle. Me and Daryl, not so much noodlers, right? But he loves it and he's gonna tell us about it. And we're gonna talk about a little bit of everything fishing, uh, bass fishing, smallmouth, muskie fishing. We're gonna talk about pretty much all that. We enjoy every bit of it. What Noodling Really Is

When are you going noodling? Going noodling, first noodling trip of the year will be next Wednesday on the Tennessee River. So I'm fired up.

And just to like set it straight, though, like you're talking about noodling with your arm not like noodle noodles. You're talking about actual noodling.

Yeah, no, we're not, yeah, that's we call that jug fishing with the pool noodles throwing those out. We do some of that too, but this is hand-to-hand combat right here. We're going to war, um, you know, just kind of easing down the river banks and looking for.

Y'all are doing holes. Like y'all are going straight up. We're yeah, we're whole guys. Yeah, I went, I went one time with uh it's somewhere in Mississippi, I don't remember where it was. Me and Dad actually. And the guy that was taking us, he was missing like three fingers. I think it was like these three. And he had this rod. He was the guy taking y'all. Yeah, he was the guy taking. What was his name? I don't remember his name, but he had this rod, right? And it was a steel rod. It's about, I don't know, three foot long. He would stick them in these holes. And depending on how it bit this rod, he would know what it was.

But he obviously wasn't very good. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

When did that rod come along? I think that would have came around after this one.

And I never I'll never forget it. So it was like, you know, you're kind of you're kind of scared every time you fucking. Yeah. And uh I remember dad one time, he went under, you see some bubbles, you know. Oh, he's got something. And then all of a sudden his legs are moving, oh, he's really got something. Yeah. And then he comes blowing up out of the water, swinging his arm, and he's got this fish. I swear, I don't know how this fish bit his hand or his catfish. It's so small. And he was swinging it around, dude, because it I guess it just scared him when it bit him, and he just grabbed it and pulled it out. Dude, he was slinging around as a little bitty fish. Little channel. Yeah, a little baby fish.

Those little channels will nip at you. But yeah, that's that's probably one of my favorite things to do is noodle. If I could do that 365 days a year and give up everything else, that's probably what I would do. You know, bass fishing is is my first love for sure. Um, but gosh, there's something, there's something spiritual about sticking your hand in a hole and getting it. Oh, yeah.

So see, I mean, there's some speech about sticking your hand in a hole, but I don't know if I don't know if I can take it in.

I don't know if I can it's gotta be straight adrenaline, though. It is. I mean, when something grabs onto your hand in a hole underwater, like odds are stacked against you.

And you can hear them thump start thumping. It's just it's a cool feeling. That first one every year is pretty scary, but once we get that first one out of the way, it's like, let's go get another one. So do you do you do it just like bare hand or do you got the glove? No, I'm a glove man. I'm a glove man. There's some people that give me a hard time about that, you know. Man, real real mint, real noodlers, yeah, raw dog. Yeah, no, you know, short sleeving. Hey, if they want to do it that way, they can. I'm not gonna. So I don't know. I feel like I'm not going there, but you know, these are glove's always safe.

A glove is safe. I will say one thing, though. You see those, you know, you see all these girls, you know, down there noodling. They got all these scratches and cuts on their arms, catfish kisses, you know? Yeah. You're like, I mean, that's cool, but like, you know that you know they make things for that, you know.

Oh yeah. My girlfriend's a pretty serious noodler. She's uh she's been noodling the past two years, and she's in Alaska right now, so she won't get to this year, but she actually caught a bigger fish than me last year. I don't know.

So like what is like all right, so big fish noodling, like what do you consider that?

So it kind of depends on where you're at, you know. Um kind of like the 180, you know, boon and crockett of noodling is like a 70 pounder. Yeah.

So which man, hand to hand though, that's that's gotta be a bite, yeah.

That's a big fish. So we're gonna ease down to Oklahoma at some point. That's kind of where that's going on. So um, you know, a big fish on the Tennessee River, they get really big out there, but pulling them out of the holes, I mean whenever they bite your hand.

50 pound fish is a pretty when they bite your hand, are you just grabbing like whatever you grab gill plate? Like what are you grabbing in there?

I gr I grab their lip. I I don't like gilling the fish because I don't like killing them.

Is that what it does whenever you do that? Like I don't know what you grab when a fish bites you.

SPEAKER_01 4:38

Yeah, like the old school noodlers, they would get in there and grab the gills and and pull them out. But I just grab their lip and try to hold on. It's like riding a bull just about. So I bet they get spinning. Yeah, and I mean there's sometimes you can't get them out of the hole and you gotta push them back in. Really? Yeah, and then get your feet back in there and and block the hole.

So that's to me, dude. It seems pretty western. Like I can see it getting western at times.

That's yeah, that's funny. That reminds me of a guy I went uh I went tuna fishing down in the Bahamas a couple years ago, and he kept telling me about how much fun spear fishing was, how much fun spear fishing was.

Oh yeah, yeah, oh yeah. And that he wanted to take us, and uh I was like, Yeah, man, absolutely. I'd you know, I'd love to do that. Because people say the same thing to me about noodling, like, you need to try it, you need to try it. Um, or I say that to people, you know, and they're like, no, I'm never, I'll never try it. Right, right. This dude, he had the Columbia, you know, zip pants on, he unzipped them and he's got a shark bite around his leg. And that decision to go spear fishing changed very quickly.

Like, yeah. I see those videos all the time on the internet where like they're down there spearfishing, and like all of a sudden a shark swims up and they just like stiff arm it.

No, yeah, no, I'm not I'm not doing that.

So I think I think if I go noodling, I want to see somebody down there with a hook. Like, put it in the fish's mouth.

I I think you can do that. Uh, don't quote me on that, guys, but I think I think there is a kind of noodling with a hook that you can do. It's just wild if you think about going in there and doing that.

But is that then noodling, or is it something else?

It's called something. I can't remember what it's called.

At that point, we might as well just use a riding reel, though. I wouldn't know. That's what I'm saying.

Then y'all just give me the signal, I just start reeling it out. Yeah, that's yeah. I don't think I just don't think I could do it. What like what part of it couldn't you do? The the just sticking your hand in there part or the underwater part? Like what the whole thought process of going down there and sticking my hand in the hole, I can't see what's in there. And you stick my hand in there and be like, just waiting for something to do with it. He would take some goggles.

Yeah, I mean, that's where the stick comes in, you know. So y'all do use a stick? We use a stick. Okay. Yeah.

That's a real thing. That's a real thing. But are y'all are y'all are y'all noodling like in the boxes or just holes? We do both. See, I'm not doing holes. There's no chance I do just a random hole.

The the holes definitely are a little bit a little bit more scary than you know, pulling them out of boxes.

Yeah, because the boxes are supposed to be like snapping turtle proof and stuff, right?

Well, technically. Depending on how big the snapping turtle is. Um what does that mean? But the thing that the thing that scares me more uh than snapping turtles, I have never come across a snapping turtle. And some of the guys that I noodle with that have been doing it a very long time haven't come across them either. You know, and if it is, it's it's a the a one or two time option, you know. Your guy, your guy sounds like he's come across a couple more times.

This dude was under boat ramps. I mean, this dude is, you know, he's sticking his hands in holes he shouldn't be.

Yeah, yeah. You know, the thing that scares me more is going underwater and getting stuck. Because then you drown. And that's a and that is you're not selling it, great up here. I I mean, I'm just so how does I'm bringing up all the stuff that you could normally have before you get in there.

But how do you I mean are Kylie, how deep of water is this in? Do people knew the way? I guess I don't understand. I mean, some people I don't want to tell me secrets. You only need a tablespoon of water to drown, so I guess it really doesn't matter. That's true. Yeah, I mean one tablespoon will kill you.

A lot of you know, a lot of holes are in that four four to eight foot range. So you I mean, I pulled some last year that my feet aren't touching the bottom that you gotta swim down to.

That's where you go shot. Yeah. Put me in like one foot of water. Yeah, I don't love, I don't love that either, but I love getting bit. That feeling like there's nothing else.

How do you swim up? All right, all right, for example, you go down there eight foot and you're not, you gotta swim down. Somehow miraculously find the hole, you know, underwater, eight foot deep. Then you stick your hand there. I'm already, I can't hold my breath very long. I was trying to calculate how long it takes me to get down there, like how long is it? I'm already half gassed by the time I get there. Yeah. Then say a big catfish, like a 60-pounder, you know, a big one, you know, big, big catfish, bites a little bit. That's a big one. How am I supposed to swim back up with that fish in eight feet of water?

How I do it is you pull him out of the hole, and then kind of like you're jumping off. I mean, I guess jumping off a horse like or a lunge, you just push off the bottom, and that's that's probably what happened with that guy with the little fish jumping out of the water, coming flying, coming off the bottom. So yeah. I bet you're right about that. That's kind of the game plan, you know.

Yeah. Cause I'd be freaked out, dude. I'd be if the fish, if I if I couldn't get the fish out, and I was running out of breath and I was eight foot deep, dude, I'd be wigged out. Yeah, I'd be like, the fish is gone down.

You're coming up. If if they don't bite you pretty quick that deep, like I'm coming back up. Yeah. You know, it's it if I don't get him first go, I'm coming back up. Sometimes on those shallower holes, like I will reach around and feel for them underwater. But if on those deeper ones, I'm not sure.

Yeah, they ever do this just do you really like just thinking about just reaching around, like you're just reaching and you can't find him. Like, oh, then also he just he just like knocks the piss out of your arm. Oh yeah.

Oh yeah. I mean, but some I mean, most of the time if there's a fish in there, I already know because of the stick.

So do they come and do they actually bite your hand or do you like find their their head and then like it depends.

So some as soon as you come in in the door, like they will be. As soon as you come in, I mean they smoke you. Uh some, you know, some fish, that's not the case. And you gotta reach around in there and look for them and manipulate them into biting.

I I think so. It but that is like a newer development in the past couple of years. It was it my whole life, it's always been bass fishing. Like bass fishing has been the thing um that really has fired me up. Um did that for a long time, wanted to do do it professionally, and uh quickly realized that I just wasn't

that good. You know, I can catch some fish and I can do all right around the house, but when you start traveling the country, it's uh it's a whole different whole different ball game. And uh, you know, now these guys are so good, man. Like what do you think makes them so special?

Like that group, because you see like professional fishermen, they got something about them, they fish different, they think different than normal people. Like, what do you think that is?

SPEAKER_01 12:44

You know, I think a little bit of it, not a little bit of it, a lot of it is is time on the water and putting in the work, like and understanding situations of something that's happened in the past, like this is what I did then, I'm gonna give it a try, and then being 100% confident that it's gonna work.

Even if it doesn't work out, like that's this that's the mental game is something that I like in a big way. Like I get spun out and pissed off so quick if they're not biting. Uh, but those guys that are that are legit getting after it, like it's a lot of that. And then I think, man, too, it's just like guys like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, you know, Peyton Manning, those guys that just have that God-given ability.

Like this is what this is without a doubt what they were supposed to be doing on this earth. Like, there's a lot of guys that have that too. Yeah, that instinct. Yeah.

And that's a lot of it too. Is like like when you say confidence and have the confidence, I feel like that is number one part of it. Because it's hard, like you know how it is. You pick up a bait that people say, all right, right now this is, you know, they're biting this right now, and you start throwing a little bit and it's not really your forte, and you're like, man, I just don't have confidence. Right. And it's almost impossible to just buy into that process because you're just like, I just I really don't feel I'm not feeling it, you know?

Yeah, it's like the quickie. Like, I'm like, there's no way that thing works. And then everybody's cackering on my all right.

Then you see somebody that like has confidence in it, and they'll come to your lake in front of you, and I'm talking about smash them.

Yeah, that quickie is it's a crazy deal. I've gotten to play around with it the past couple of weeks because I was one of those guys that looked at it. I've looked at it for the past year on the tackle store shelf and been like, one, how do you even rig this thing? Thankfully, we're getting thousands of rigging videos. I don't know if anyone's been on Instagram lately. But but there is a lot of rigging videos going up of the Koik. Um, and I just saw it and I was like, that is the dumbest looking thing ever. How do you rig it? And I'm not gonna get one. And I was joking with Chris at Harperth River Outfitters earlier this week. I said, Man, I stood over three boxes of the full cast koikes and said, Ah, I don't like that color. I'm I'm not gonna get them. And now they're 250 a pop. Oh, it's crazy. So he got any more? Oh, don't say it on here.

You know, like you're like uh nobody's bought that since like probably the 80s, you know. And then some bait shops you go, they're just got I mean, they're just slam packed with what you actually looking for.

It's crazy in there. It's organized chaos for sure. Like he's got so much tackle in there, he's got everything. I mean, every mega bass jerkbait, every six cents jerkbait, Berkeley products.

I mean hand custom glide baits, did it sick the one that I got stopped in the airport with the other day because I forgot I had it. So we were flying the other day. Yeah, we were going to Oregon to turkey camp.

Um, and uh got through TSA, you know, did the whole thing, and they take my bag, my backpack I was carrying on my laptop, and uh they pull it over to the side, and I'm like, golly, what's in there? You know, I'm like, there's nothing there on my laptop. Like I went through the bag semi, you know, that's to buy a truck. And the guy like going through the bag, he pulls out, it's like a that big old, it's like a big old bluegill. It was like it could be like 300 bucks from me. Uh Chris. Did he take it from you? No, he said the guy was like, I'm gonna let you keep it. Oh, that's nice.

I was like, thank God. Because I'm not gonna tell you, throw it away. Yeah. When we were coming back from Sinaloa, me and T-Stow, he had he had a bunch of baits in his bag, and they did not let him keep them. They were really yeah. Oh man. I you can't, I mean, no one speaks English. Yeah. So like none at all. So we're in there and they stop T Stew, pull him aside, and start like patting him down. I was like, oh, we have made it so easily this whole trip. This is where it all goes downhill. But they just took a couple swim baits from him, so it wasn't too nothing serious.

But it's like, what's so bizarre about like you having the glide bait was like we're going turkey hunting. We're going turkey hunting before you. And he he it gets busted at the airport for like a a a glide bait. Like, how random could it be?

It's like and it's like it's like the glide is like 330 bucks. I mean, every those are high. And I'm like, dude, I we're not throwing away. I walk back to my truck, like, I'll get this whole thing.

Yeah. The same thing happened when I went, we went to Canada too. I got stopped.

Oh, you'll have that. I got stopped in Canada a couple years ago, and uh, I didn't think I was gonna make it through. One, I didn't have a passport. They don't they frown upon that big time uh up at the border not having a passport. And then finally, you know, I'm about to get in, and this agent comes over, pulls me, says some like code red 516, like and the guy I'm talking to, he's I mean, about to stamp my pass my my stuff to go through. And uh he's like, Yeah, you're gonna his face gets real red. He's like, You're gonna need to go sit over there. And it's like they sent me to this little holding cell just about and uh this officer, I I don't know what they're called, uh they're not TSA, because that's the airport border patrol. Yeah. So this lady calls me up and she's like, uh, have you ever been arrested before? I said,

uh a couple times. And so we started talking about that, and she let she ended up letting me through, but um I thought I wasn't gonna get in. We had driven all the way up there. I let Oh my god, I let I let Sam Holcomb, one of my buddies, he rode up there with me. I let him know about at North Dakota that I didn't have a passport.

That's funny, dude. Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's always trouble, man. Especially like you're going like flying to Canada, like taking our guns and stuff is like, oh, this is a nightmare. And the whole time you're flying, like getting to Canada, to the border, you're thinking you're just dreading it.

Yeah. I've never flown up there. We've always driven.

So the flying is like the thing is you have to get the gun checked here. And then when you get into Canada, you have to get it rechecked there, which takes like a long process. We didn't know that. It was like it came up and oh, it seems like a like a five-gallon bucket looks like that.

Yeah, yeah, it looked like jaws coming out of the water, you know, but not giants. It was a big one.

And we just caught two giants. Or no, he hadn't caught them yet. That was the first fish that like yeah, it broke off, and then we threw in there like boom, boom, two giants. So, like you know, if you caught those two, then whatever that was was like. I mean, but you can't complain too much with a 32-pound sack.
