Coming Attractions
Are you ready to strengthen your spiritual defenses against temptation? Join me, Pastor Will, as we explore the inevitable "coming attractions" in life that test our faith. We'll discuss how recognizing and confronting these temptations, rather than ignoring them, is the key to living a righteous life through the power of the Holy Spirit. Together, we’ll delve into James 1:14 and the role of our own desires in leading us to sin, emphasizing the necessity of thoughtful, Spirit-led actions to maintain a godly life.
Ever felt like you’re doomed to repeat the same sins? Think again. In this episode, I challenge the widespread belief that believers are destined to fall into sin. We’ll talk about how prayer and living in the Spirit provide the strength to resist temptation. You'll discover that, while temptation is unavoidable, giving in to it is a choice.
All you have to do is realize and be brave in the Lord because, again, he has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love and of power and of a sound mind. So when you have a sound mind, you have the intelligence, the spiritual intelligence, to say hey, wait a minute, let me stop. No, hold on what's happening, everybody. It's another episode of the soul fuel podcast. Your pit stop for your soul to be fueled and gassed up for your journey in life, of course, doing it with christ. I'm your host, willie robbins III, aka Pastor Will. Listen, I'm just here to give you words of wisdom, tidbits, whatever the Holy Spirit gives you know what I'm saying. That's what I'm going to give you. I ain't tripping, you know. I hope you are doing well and this episode finds you where it needs to find you. All right, listen, today I just want to get straight to it. I want to talk about things that are getting ready to come up in life the next event, the next temptation. I want to talk about the coming attractions. Right, the definition. I was looking up the definition of coming attraction because it was literally like the title that came to my mind, and I wrote this episode title a long time ago, but I really didn't have any substance to go with it and as I was, as I was thinking of the title, you know, there was a few words that came to me and I wanted you to understand that as much talk as as I am teaching that I do about, you know, walking in the spirit and staying free and living a life free from sin, um, as much as I know how, I'm also realistically letting you know that I am realistic about it. Let me rephrase that whole thing because it just sounded really funky as much as righteous living and sin-free living that I talk and teach and preach, I believe that I wholeheartedly believe that and Scripture backs me up on that view. While I do all of that and live that, as much as I know how, according to the best of my ability, as the Spirit gives me the grace to do it, just as we all have the ability to do it with the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us, I will tell you that it's not always easy and that there will be coming.
Speaker 1:We can't pretend that we are not attracted to some things all right, like come on. I mean let's not act as if the flesh won't ever flesh like for real, like don't. Let's not pretend that the flesh won't flesh like. The flesh won't ever want anything this lost world has to offer. The true power in remaining unsportsmanlike by the world is us living in the spirit. There are more than enough ways around temptation. All right, there are more than enough ways around temptation.
Speaker 1:The reality is that, as humans, we are naturally attracted to many things the world has to offer, and I should say, and word this like this, that the world has things that are attractive. I won't say that we're all like everybody's attracted to the same things. It's not true. There are things that are attractive to believers, right, and when we pretend like it isn't, then we we really deceive ourselves and it doesn't help us to move forward. It doesn't help us to live in a truthful way, and all it's going to take at that point when we're deceiving ourselves, all it's going to take is a moment of a lapse of judgment, a moment of of, uh, being vulnerable to what the flesh is trying to persuade your mind to take hold of or grab. Um, we're going to fall. We're going to fall If you don't realize that it's the flesh is going to want what it wants. But again, as I've said it a thousand times, you don't have to act on it, you don't have to even behave on it Right on it, you don't have to even behave on it right. So what I want you to understand is that james says this, for every man is james chapter 1, I believe it's verse 14 for every man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust, his own evil desires, and enticed we talked about this before, I've said this before when he entertains evil desires, when he gives thought with thoughtful actions that end up giving birth to sin.
Speaker 1:How does it give birth to sin? Well, because you carried out the thought and you put emphasis on the thought and you dress the thought. You know what it's like taking thoughts, cooking them, taking the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life, and putting it in a pot like eggs and batter, and all of this, and you put it in the oven. Putting it in the oven, is you acting out on it? Ding when the oven is you acting out on it? Ding when the oven stops, you're giving birth to death. Why? Because, well, sin is giving birth to death, because that's all that sin can bring is death, because the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is you got it the eternal life. You got it, the eternal life. You got it.
Speaker 1:So you got to understand. You got to understand that there is power in living in the Spirit so that you can fight the flesh. The flesh is always going to be flesh in y'all. That's all I'm saying essentially. I'm not going back on anything. I've ever taught anything. I've ever preached.
Speaker 1:When it comes to sin, right, because sin is the missing of the mark. Sin, the definition of sin, is really just doing evil in the sight of the Lord and people, you know people argue with me and want to go back and forth about no, so you're going to sin. You're going to sin. You're going to sin. No, you will have temptation, you will be tempted. It is up to you whether you're going to fall to that temptation or not. It is always up to you. And I have to use this platform, I have to use this podcast to encourage you and make sure that you understand the power that you hold when you are a believer.
Speaker 1:If there are people, this is what gets me, because there are people in the world, and I always use the word because there are people out in the world who don't do nothing. They probably don't even know Jesus. They will make an amazing believer if they add some prayer to their lives right. They will make an amazing believer. These people don't have sex, these people don't do drugs, these people don't drink, these people don't steal, these people don't kill, these people don't lie, these people don't cheat, but they just don't know Jesus and unfortunately, that's not good enough. But why is it that everybody that knows Jesus struggles with things that they have the power to be in control of by way of the spirit that lives within, huh huh.
Speaker 1:So, as paul says in galatians one of my favorite scriptures, that I always quote this, and those of you that listen to me a lot in our morning prayers on on my youtube channel, you know I quote this a lot because I believe that I'm just one of those people, not just, I'm just a believer that strongly believes in being free from stepping into those coming attractions, and this is the reason why I wanted you to hear this and I wanted you to know about the coming attractions, because, just because you're growing in your prayer life and just because you pray every morning. It's because I pray every morning Doesn't mean I won't get faced with challenges, I won't get faced with thoughts, I won't get faced with different things that will try to um, uh, be appealing or be sexy to me, right, like these are things that are going to happen. But it's up to you, and with that prayer life that you have, or you say you have, or all of the prayers that we do, I should be able to muster up more than enough strength to say no to sin. I can do it, and if I can do it, you can do it. And again, if somebody who is not a believer can do these things and achieve these things, how much more powerful are you who has the Spirit of God? I'm just saying, like it makes 1,000% sense to me and I hope that this is making 1,000% sense to you.
Speaker 1:So, galatians 5, 16 and 17,. But I say walk by the spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh, for the flesh sets its desire against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh, for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. And the things that he speaks of, that we please, are the things that approach us, the things that come to test us, the things that come to tempt us. To go back to what James says in chapter 1, james, chapter 1, verse 14, every man is tempted when he's drawn away by his own lust, right? So you know where people were. Somebody has had a problem with sex. Somebody has had a problem with smoking weed. Somebody has had a problem with getting drunk. That's not everybody's problem. That's not everybody's problem. That's not everybody's vice.
Speaker 1:And watch this, just because it is a vice, let me give the definition of vice. Let me give the definition of vice real quick. Let me look at the word vice. I know what it means, but I really y'all know, I like to really look at words, right? So vice is, wow, immoral or wicked behavior. Vice is criminal activity involving prostitution, pornography or drugs. Right, vice is an immoral or wicked personal characteristic. So, wait a minute, wait a minute. So a vice again criminal activity involving prostitution, pornography or drugs.
Speaker 1:We have to go back and we have to look at this. Y'all, we got to look at it. We got to look at it Because I was getting ready to say that whatever. No, it just goes exactly with what I was getting ready to say that whatever. No, it just goes exactly with what I was getting ready to say, which is everybody has a different vice, but the vice is not something that sticks with you as something that you always have to look out for because you're growing. Hear me what I'm telling you. You are growing, so when you grow, what you used to have to look for, you don't have to be careful about it anymore because I'm already aware Like the answer is no. I don't struggle with that Right Again.
Speaker 1:So it goes back, because I was talking about James, chapter 1, verse 14, but every man is tempted when he's drawn away by his own evil desire.
Speaker 1:We can actually replace the words evil desire with vice, because a vice is an evil desire, right? Couldn't we agree? Couldn't we say that that a vice is an evil desire when every man is tempted, when you're tempted by something that should not be tempting you watch this, I need you to get this. When you're tempted by something that should not be tempting you, but it is, it's tempting because there's an attractiveness to it. It was attractive, and being attracted means that I'm moving towards what is attractive. Oh, come on, help me, holy Spirit.
Speaker 1:Something being attractive is different from me being attracted. We can all notice and admit, because we're human, that there are things again in the world that are attractive. But the closer I get to the Lord I will not be attracted and that means that I will not be. I will not be drawn to it, because to be drawn means I'm being pulled in that direction and that's not what we are doing as believers. We're not being drawn into that direction like that.
Speaker 1:We are able to see that something is attractive and to know what it is, and we're able to use discernment even when it doesn't outright look like what we thought it should look like, and how some have fell victim to some of these things because it's only been disguised. And that's another way that the devil loves to try to get people is disguising things and making it look like something else. But the moment you get involved with it, it slowly takes the mask off. Jinkies, it's Professor, come on. Like Scooby-Doo. You're just like them. Velma and Fred and all them, and Scoob and Shag. You're sitting there like them, running around being afraid of something that you know what it is. It's chasing you. You even met the thing before. Oh man, that Scooby-Doo reference came in right on time. Thank you, lord. Jesus, like what's chasing you is something that you know. If you stop and realize that, hey, hey, it can't do nothing to me, and in some cases it has you, you, you got trapped and it did do something to you because the most that that that the villains did in in in scooby-doo, in that show, is tie shaggy and scoby up, tie Velma up Velma. Watch this, though, but Velma loses her glasses, she loses her vision, so she can't see because she's careless.
Speaker 1:I hope y'all going with me right now, because I believe that the Lord is talking right now, and I'm just using Scooby-Doo as an impromptu illustration because it makes so much sense. You're you. God is not giving us a spirit of fear, but if you're living like shaggy and scooby, you're always hungry. You're always hungry, but at the same time you're always scared. How can you be hungry and scared at the same time? It's funny, because shagging and scooping, no matter what they're going through, no matter how scary something is, they're gonna always eat. They're gonna always eat, and so can I tell you that that that's symbolic for the cares of this life.
Speaker 1:The temptation Scooby can be lured by Scooby Snacks. Stop running from things because and I and I use scooby, scooby uh, the tv show, the cartoon, as an illustration because everybody in every episode that was the villain was always in a mask and the gang met them at some point before the spookiness stuff started to happen. So that's why I say you know when you're running, when you when, when temptation is disguised, you've seen it before, you failed to it before you fell to that particular sin, you fell to that, to that uh uh, that that before you've done it before. All you have to do is realize and be brave in the Lord because, again, he has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love and of power and of a sound mind. So when you have a sound mind, you have the intelligence, the spiritual intelligence, to say hey, wait a minute, let me stop. No, hold on, I'm about to fight right now, because I'm about to take the mask off.
Speaker 1:This thing Ah, it's you, it's sex, it's worldly desire, it's secular, it's drugs, it's prostitutes, it's porn, it's a man, it's a man, it's a woman. This is the same attractiveness that I was attracted to before. So when I take the mask off of it, I'm able to identify it as a fraud, as fake as fake and when you are really in God, you don't have time to run from things that have no power over you. It runs from you because you have already cast away those thoughts. You have already cast away that thoughts, you have already cast away that ideology. You're not operating the same way you used to because you knew that those attractions were coming. You knew that there were roller coasters, there were rides, there were stories, there were events. There are events, there are roller coasters, there are disguised temptations that will come. But again, this is why I stress the importance, and why Scripture stresses the importance, of walking in the spirit.
Speaker 1:I hope you got this today. So that's all I got for y'all. I hope this was good.
