BEYOND Design: The Business & Mindset Podcast for Designers & Creatives
BEYOND Design is a podcast for designers, freelancers, and creatives who want honest conversations about the creative process, mindset shifts, self-doubt, burnout, pricing, confidence, and building a creative business that feels good to run. Hosted by me, Nelett Loubser, I share real stories, lessons from the design industry, and the business and emotional side of creative work that people do not always talk about. Because design is only one part of it — the rest is mindset, boundaries, growth, and learning how to build a creative career and life that works for you.

When your clients and inbox start running your business
NelettToday we're going to talk about something that's kind of sneaky, almost embarrassing, when we realize it's not you running your freelance business, it's your clients, your inbox, your WhatsApp notifications. That one client who thinks a quick edit means redo the entire project by tonight. If you've ever felt like you're working harder than ever but somehow not in charge, this episode is for you. Because you didn't start freelancing to live like this. And today I want us to talk about what happens when boundaries don't exist and how to flip the dynamics you're not just the designer in the room, but the creative director of your own business. So let me ask you, do you ever feel like your inbox is your boss? Like your WhatsApp groups or your project managers and your clients? Well they're basically steering the ship while you're somewhere below deck, patching up leaks with yesterday's to do list. That my friend is what freelancing looks like without boundaries. And I'll be honest, I've been there. For years, I used to believe that being fully booked was the dream, that replying within two minutes made me professional, that designing in a day made me a desired designer, that saying yes to every request meant I was building a reputation. The spoiler here is what I was actually building was a trap. I was designing logos at midnight, doing changes and edits on weekends, letting clients drag deadlines and shift scope. And the worst part I thought that was just freelancing. Like chaos was the price of freedom. But here's what I eventually learned the hard way. If you don't set the structure, your clients will, and their structure, that's chaos. The truth hit me not in a big dramatic moment, but slowly over seasons of my life. Like when I fell pregnant and was sick for nine straight months, or when I had a newborn in my arms, or when s life simply happened, illness, family, those unpredictable moments, you know, just life. And here's what I realized the hard way. Because I had built a business around performing on demand, around answering fast, saying yes, fixing things at midnight. The minute I couldn't keep up, the whole thing crumbled. Clients who had been with me for years, like five or six years, they just left. Not because they were cruel, but because I had trained them to expect me on their terms. I had never educated them. I'd let them run the show for years. I'll never forget even in the hospital after my second baby, a client messaged me, congratulations on the baby, and I know you're in the hospital, but I just need XYZ. And that's when it clicked. This wasn't their fault, this was on me. Because in the end business doesn't wait for us. We are the ones who need to set the pace, to guide the process, to decide how the work gets done. If we don't, our clients will, and their version, it'll burn us out every single time. So let's talk about flipping that script. Because freelancing doesn't have to feel like chaos. And it's not actually that difficult. It's small things done right consistently. Here's what I started to change and maybe it'll spark something for you too. Number one, I set the process. Not how do you like to work, but here's how I work best and gets the best results. Number two, I let the timeline. No more when suits you. It will become I've penciled you in for this time or at I've spaced next week at this time. Number three, I choose the communication container, meaning whether it's on a notion space or shared folder or one weekly email update which I'd love to do, uh email status that I sent out to them, I created this space. It's managed. Instead of being dragged into the chaos, I am proactive. Number four, I respected my own time. I have office hours, revision rounds, a response window, which means a time for them to respond for us to meet their deadline. And you know what? When I respected it, they respected it. Clients actually love being led. They just need to trust that you know what you are doing, and that starts with you believing it first. And honestly, this is why I created the playbook planner and the playbook desk. Because design school taught us how to master Photoshop and Illustrator, but nobody handed us a manual for boundaries or how to handle tricky feedback or how to protect your time without burning bridges. The playbooks are those missing pieces. They're not just planners or digital systems, they're tools built from 25 years of my own messy late night what am I doing seasons. And the best part, you don't just get the tools, you get me. When you're stuck, you can send me an email, I'll help. You kind of can see the playbooks and me as your silent partner, because you're not alone in this. So friend, the next time you feel like a business is slipping out of your hands, I want you to pause, take a breath, and remind yourself, you are not just a freelancer, you're the CEO, the strategist, the creative director. This is your business, your rhythm, your freedom, and it's time to design it like that. I'd love for you to take one small action from this episode. Maybe it's setting office hours, maybe it's sending one email that says, This is how I work best. Maybe it's just deciding I will lead my projects from here on. And if you need a little support while figuring this out, that's exactly why I created the Playbook Planner and the Playbook Desk. The planner gives you space to map your weeks, track your boundaries, and stay grounded when everything feels a bit all over the place. And inside the desk, you'll find ready-to-use templates. Both have downloadable resources and step-by-step systems to help you put structure around your creativity. It's the stuff I wish someone had handed me years ago, and it's all waiting for you at gunsace.com because your freelance life doesn't have to feel like ours. It can feel like yours and it can feel safe. Thanks for being here, for letting me into your ears and into your world today. You're not alone in this. Design your life wherever you are.
