64: How to Use Music to Teach Other Subjects in Your Homeschool

[00:00:00] Hi friends, it's Gena Mayo from Music in our Homeschool, and I am here to talk to you today about how you can actually use music to teach other subjects in your homeschool. I am a homeschooling mom just like you. I have eight kids that I have homeschooled.

And I have the online course site at Learn.MusicinOurHomeschool.com, which provides all kinds of easy to use, click and go music courses that you can actually include music in your homeschool. You don't have to know how to teach it yourself. You don't have to know music because you can learn right alongside your kids.

And there are such a variety of courses. Let's talk about how to use music to teach other subjects in your homeschool. One of my favorite ways is to combine music with history.

So whether you're teaching world history American history, whatever it is, I have a course that goes along with it. And you can use, for [00:01:00] example, let me just tell you what I'm doing this year. We're studying the 1800s for our history this year. Every week I take a lesson from my Romantic Era course, which is music is the 18 hundreds.

And so we're learning about a composer or a musical style that was from the 1800s, and it goes along with the history that we're studying.

I also have it with American music. So if you're going through American history, you could look at the American music course and do a lesson from that as you are teaching your American history.

Another really fun subject to combine music with is geography. I have a couple of courses that work great for this. Another one we're using this year is I am doing a state study with my elementary kids. And so every time we get to a new state-- this week is Michigan-- we do the State Songs of the 50 US States online course.

Another really fun thing you can do is if you're [00:02:00] studying different countries around the world, is I have a World Music course. So if you're studying about Iceland or Australia, or Colombia, you can look at the music lesson that goes for that particular country and listen to the music. And a lot of times it includes indigenous music, folk instruments that are special to that country, folk dances, folk songs, and so I really love that course. World Music.

I have some lessons that go along with science as well, so if you're studying horses or space or, water like oceans, you can , listen to the music lessons that go along with those because composers were inspired by things in nature and have written music that sounds like birds singing or the water, the waterfalls and winter storms. And so all kinds of those scientific studies [00:03:00] can go with music as well.

If you are studying the Bible, I have a Great Hymns of the Faith course, which is wonderful to help you grow in your faith and combine with your Bible study. So that course is also available.

One more that I was going to say: cultural studies. A lot of my lessons, have to do with different cultures or different holidays. So those are really fun to do. Depending on the special day that you're celebrating throughout the year, you can do a music lesson that goes along with it too.

I would love to hear if you have some other ideas of how to use music as you're studying other subjects in your homeschool.

Please leave a comment below and I would love to hear your ideas as well and things that you've done in your own homeschool. So be sure to head over to Learn.MusicinOurHomeschool.com and check out everything we have [00:04:00] there.
