#424 Shoes. Putting on your shoes is a HUGE deal

Aaron Havens Season 5 Episode 424

What if a simple pair of shoes could change how you work, lead, and live? We dig into the power of tiny fundamentals through the unexpected lens of laces and leather, inspired by John Wooden’s legendary practice of teaching players to tie their shoes. It’s not nostalgia—it’s strategy. By eliminating blisters, loose laces, and other avoidable friction, you free your mind to focus on the game that actually matters.

I share why small details aren’t busywork but the backbone of consistent performance. We talk about intent as a daily habit: the moment you put on your shoes becomes a threshold ritual—are you ready to show up or just going through the motions? From team culture to personal routines, we look at how honoring the ordinary builds trust, preserves energy, and reduces chaos. Wooden’s approach wasn’t about perfectionism; it was about smart prevention, sharper attention, and fewer distractions when the stakes rise.

You’ll walk away with simple, practical ways to apply the metaphor today: create a quick setup checklist that prevents friction, standardize your start-of-day ritual, and reframe your first step as a promise to yourself. The goal isn’t to do more; it’s to remove what trips you. Let your shoes be a cue for courage and craft, a reminder that you’ve got this because you’ve prepared for it. If this message helps you see the everyday with new eyes, share it with a friend, subscribe for more Growth Instigator prompts, and leave a review with your own “shoe lesson.” What ordinary object keeps you accountable?

SPEAKER_00:

Welcome to the Growth Instigators Hotline. I'm Aaron Havens, your host and growth coach. This is message 423. This week we are talking about shoes, an everyday normal object that we can assign deeper meaning to, something that can grab our attention and represent something bigger. Welcome to part four of five as we dive into lessons we can gleam from shoes. I knew it was only a matter of time until a caller left a message about the famous basketball coach John Wooden and how he taught his players to tie their shoes. Yeah, he emphasized that mastering small details like properly lacing socks and shoes to prevent blisters and loose laces was crucial for success on the court. Wooden believed that this attention to fundamentals would prevent injuries and distractions, allowing players to focus on the bigger game. Yep. What every other team overlooked, Wooden's players made a huge, big deal. It was a big part of their culture. My friends, look down at your shoes right now. You don't take shortcuts. You do things your way. You pay attention to details. You don't do it like everyone else. You take pride in tying your shoelaces and living your life the way you do. So wherever your shoes take you today, may they remind you that you've got this. You're taking your shot. You'll put in the hard work, pay attention to the small details, and let the universe line everything else up for you. So here is your warning. Don't put your shoes on, right? Don't put them on today unless you mean it. Unless you're ready to go for it. I mean, today is the only day like this one you'll ever live again. So go for it. Your shoes are ready, are you? That, my friends, is how a common everyday object can instigate growth. I'd like to hear some more of your observations. What growth lessons can you apply to shoes? For those of you calling the Growth Instigator hotline, I'd love to hear your thoughts after the beep.
