Your name travels further than you do, and that is exactly the problem. We cannot stand behind every email, sales call, comment thread, or client meeting where someone invokes our brand, our title, or our credibility. So we put a spotlight on one uncomfortable leadership question: who is out in the world representing us right now, and are they actually ready for that job?

Aaron Havens frames reputation with a sharp metaphor that sticks: lending your name is like handing someone your credit card and hoping they do not max it out. When we let someone “carry” our name, we are handing them years of trust building, hard-won credibility, and the emotional equity customers and teammates associate with us. We also name the hard truth that makes delegation risky: we cannot be there to watch or control what they say and do.

To make the decision practical, we narrow it down to three filters every leader can use before giving someone authority to represent the company: integrity, competence, and genuine care. If any of those land in “maybe,” we argue for a clear no, because unlike a credit card, we cannot cancel a damaged reputation. Expect direct language, a quick gut check on your current team and partners, and a push to have the uncomfortable conversations that protect your future.

If this hits home, subscribe, share it with a fellow leader, and leave a review so more builders can protect what they are creating.

A Question About Representation

SPEAKER_00

You're listening to the Growth Instigators Hotline. I'm Aaron Havens and this is message 595. Hey, here's a quick question for Fry Ye. Who right now is out in the world representing you? And are they actually ready for that job?

The Credit Card Reputation Test

SPEAKER_00

Because here's the thing about your name: it's like giving someone your credit card and hoping they don't max it out. You're handing them your reputation, your years of trust building, your credibility, and they're taking it out into the world and either protecting it or destroying it. Hey, no pressure. The scary part, you can't be there to watch. You can't control what they say or do you. You can only control whether you're worthy, they're worthy of carrying it in the first place.

Integrity Competence And Care

SPEAKER_00

So before you hand your name to someone, before you let them represent you, ask yourself three things. Do they have the integrity? Do they have the competence? Do they actually care about you or your company or what you're building? And if the answer to any of those is uh maybe, then no, no, your name is too valuable for maybes. Because unlike your credit card, you can't cancel your reputation. Once someone damages it, you're stuck rebuilding

Being Picky And Staying Intentional

SPEAKER_00

it. So be picky, be intentional, be willing to have the uncomfortable conversations with someone who isn't ready yet. You owe it to yourself, to what you're building first and foremost, and then you can invite great people to join you on the journey when they're ready. Your future self will thank you.

The Question To Sit With

SPEAKER_00

So here's one question to sit with Is everyone currently carrying your name actually worthy of it? Or are you just hoping they won't screw it up and one day they'll actually figure it out? Hey, my friends, have a great weekend. And until next time, may each of us live good lives and lead good companies.
