If you’re the person who can handle anything, fix anything, and save the day, this message is for you. There’s a point where competence stops being a strength and starts becoming a trap, not because you’re doing it wrong, but because your capability quietly teaches everyone else to stop reaching.

We dig into the real-time moment every leader faces: something needs doing, you could delegate or coach, but you can also just jump in and do it fast. It feels responsible. It feels like you’re showing up. It can even feel heroic. But repeat that pattern often enough and you become the safety net. Teams, partners, and families begin to rely on you, and the system starts to run through you instead of growing beyond you. That’s when leadership turns into exhaustion, bottlenecks, and invisible dependency that only reveals itself when you’re not available.

We also unpack the clean distinction that changes everything: “I can” isn’t the same as “I must.” Being able to do something is not the same as it being yours to do. The hard decision is choosing the pause, letting things be a little clumsy, and allowing someone else to struggle and come out stronger. If you care about team development, sustainable leadership, and building capable people around you, you’ll feel this one. Subscribe, share this with the capable person in your life, and leave a review with the spot where you’re ready to stop rescuing.

Welcome And The Leadership Lens

SPEAKER_00

You're listening to the Growth Instigators Hotline. I'm Aaron Havens and this is message 602. If you're alive, you're leading something. Let's start there. And what makes you better at one makes you better at all of them. So let's grow.

The Trap Of Being Capable

SPEAKER_00

I want to talk to you about the trap of being good at things. Not being bad at them, being good. Because being capable is a wonderful quality that will quietly wreck the very thing you're trying to build if you're not paying attention.

How You Become The Default Fixer

SPEAKER_00

Here's how it works: something needs doing. You can hand it off, wait, coach someone through it. Or you could just jump in and do it yourself right now and do it well. And you're capable. So you do it. It feels responsible. It feels like showing up. It even feels a little heroic. Good for you. But watch what happens the next time and the time after

When A Team Stops Reaching

SPEAKER_00

that. Every time you step in and become the answer, you teach everyone around you that they don't have to be. You become the safety net. And people rely on that. They stop reaching. Why would they grow? You've got

The House That Depends On You

SPEAKER_00

it. Picture the one person who knows how the whole house runs, where the spare key is, when the payment is due, how to reset that thing that's beeping, beep, beep. It feels good to be needed like that, right up until the time you're sick for a week and the whole house just stops operating. That's not how a house that loves you. That's a house that's depending on you. And the difference doesn't show up until you're not there.

Choosing Pause Over Rescue

SPEAKER_00

Here's the part we're sitting with. Your capability is real. No one's questioning whether you can. The question is whether you should. And those are not the same questions. Being able to do something is not the same as being yours to do. Some of the most capable people I know are exhausted because they've confused I can with I must. And now everything runs through them. The decision, the actual hard, uncomfortable decision is to not step in, to let the moment be a little clumsy, to let someone else struggle through it and come out on the other side stronger. That silence, that pause where you don't grab the wheel, yeah, that's not neglect. That's the most generous thing you can do. You're trading your short-term relief for their long-term strength.

Coaching Offer And Closing Question

SPEAKER_00

Hey, that's exactly the kind of thing I work on with people. I'm a growth coach, one-on-one, or up on stage at your retreat, or anything in between. You can find me at growthinstigators.com and I'd love to have a conversation with you. Here's the question for today Where are you being so capable that you're keeping someone else from becoming capable too? Until next time, slay the day, my friends.
