The Cost Of Convenient Yeses
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your calendar might be telling on you. The week fills up, your energy gets stretched, and suddenly you’re busy in a way you never consciously chose. That drift usually doesn’t happen through one dramatic decision. It happens through a string of small, convenient yeses said fast because it’s easier than saying no, because guilt shows up, or because turning something down feels rude.
We dig into why the real threat to focus isn’t bad choices, it’s good opportunities. The hard part is that “good” can still be wrong for you. I lean on a Steve Jobs idea that cuts through the noise: focus isn’t saying yes to the thing you’re doing, it’s saying no to the hundred other good ideas. If you’ve been trying to get better at saying no, this reframes the goal. The aim is to get so clear on your yes that no becomes obvious, simple, and steady.
We also talk about why clarity isn’t cold. Deciding what you won’t do is how you protect what you love, your mission, your people, and your best work. You’ll leave with a practical question to run at the end of the week: when you look at where your time actually went, what did you truly choose on purpose, and did you really choose it? If you want help building that clarity, I share how to connect with my coaching work. Subscribe, share this with a friend who feels overcommitted, and leave a quick review with the biggest “convenient yes” you’re ready to reconsider.

Welcome And Core Premise
SPEAKER_00You're listening to the Growth Instigators Hotline. I'm Aaron Havens and this is message 603. If you're alive, you're leading something. And what makes you better at one makes you better at all of them. So let's grow.
How Small Yeses Create Drift
SPEAKER_00Here's how you end up living a life you never actually picked. Not all at once and never on purpose. It's one small yes at a time. Most of our yeses aren't really decisions, they're just quick responses. Someone asks, and you say yes because it's easier than saying no, because you feel guilty, because it's right in front of you, and turning it down feels rude. So you say yes, and it feels generous, flexible, kind, good for you. But stack up enough of those and look at where you've ended. Your calendar is full of things you never actually chose. Your energy is going to things you can't remember signing up for. You didn't decide to become this busy, this scattered, this stretched. You just drifted there. One convenient yes at a
Focus Means Saying No
SPEAKER_00time. Steve Jobs once said, Focus isn't about saying yes to the thing you focus on. It's about saying no to the hundred other good ideas.
Get Clear On Your Yes
SPEAKER_00That's the trap. It's rarely bad things pulling you off course. It's good ones. Most people think the goal is to get better at saying no, it's not. The goal is to get so clear on your yes that no becomes obvious. When you actually know what you're for, what matters, what you're building, who you want to be, most of those little asks answer themselves. There's no agonizing. The clarity does the deciding for you. Because if you don't define what you're about, the world will do it for you and it won't ask first. It'll just keep handing you things until your life is full of everyone else's priorities and none of your own.
Protect What You Love
SPEAKER_00Clarity isn't cold. Deciding what you won't do is how you protect what you love. A clear yes is a fence around what matters most. So here's the question for
