You can genuinely care about people and still wear them out. That tension sits at the heart of this Growth Instigators Hotline message: when we keep things vague, we don’t create freedom, we create exhaustion. I unpack why “I care about people” isn’t proven by good intentions, it’s proven by the day-to-day experience we design for the people around us.

I dig into a leadership truth that stings because it’s so practical: a bad system will beat a good person every time. When roles, handoffs, and expectations aren’t clear, even great teammates start to feel frustrated with each other. It looks like a motivation problem or an attitude problem, but it’s often an operations and communication problem hiding in plain sight. The “ball” doesn’t get dropped, it never gets clearly handed to anyone.

If you’ve avoided process because it feels cold or corporate, I make the case that clarity is not the enemy of warmth. A clear process is what care looks like once there’s more than one person in the room. Structure protects your most conscientious people, reduces burnout, and turns trust into something real: a plan everyone can rely on. I’ll leave you with a pointed question to take back to your team about where you’ve asked people to “figure it out” instead of giving them what they need.

If this helped, subscribe for more leadership, systems thinking, and growth coaching insights, share it with a friend who leads a team, and leave a quick review so more people can find the show.

Hotline Intro And Framing

SPEAKER_00

You're listening to the Growth Instigators Hotline. I'm Aaron Havens, and this is message 604. If you're alive, you're leading something. And what makes you better at one thing makes you better at all of them. So let's grow.

Caring Versus Being Good For Them

SPEAKER_00

Quote unquote. I really care about people. Well, we all say it and we mean it. We do for the most part. But here's the hard thing I've learned: caring about someone and being good for them are not the same thing. You can love people around you and still wear them out. Not on purpose, not because you're cruel, because you left everything vague. And vague is exhausting to live inside.

Why Bad Systems Beat Good People

SPEAKER_00

Dimming said it plainly. A bad system will beat a good person every time. Sit with that. It's not that your people aren't good enough. It's that no amount of good makes up for a system that keeps tripping them. That's what's that's what unclear does to good people. It doesn't feel like a system problem. It feels personal. She's frustrated with him. He thinks she dropped the ball. And the truth is neither of them did. The ball was never handed to anyone. It just sat there while everyone assumed someone else

When “Loose” Leadership Causes Burnout

SPEAKER_00

had it. We think structure is the opposite of warmth, rules, steps, a plan. It all sounds a little cold, a little corporate. So the kind-hearted among us avoid it. We'd rather keep things loose and trust everyone to figure it out, and we call that caring. But watch who pays for the looseness. It's always your best people. The ones who care absorb the most and they get the most confusion to catch what falls, to quietly fix what nobody planned for. Vague doesn't burn out the slackers. No, it burns out the conscientious, the solid ones. You're not protecting your good people by keeping things loose. You're slowly using them up.

Structure As Love At Scale

SPEAKER_00

A clear process is not the enemy of care. It's what care looks like once there's more than one person in the room. It's you saying, I thought about your day before you got here. I made sure you wouldn't have to guess. Structure is how you love people at scale.

Reflection Question And Coaching Invite

SPEAKER_00

So here's your question today. Where have you called something trusting people to figure it out when really you just left them without a plan? And that's a lot of what I do with people. I work with. I'm a growth coach, one on one, or up on a stage or at your retreat, or anything in between. Find me over at growthinstigators.com and let's chat. Until next time, go slay the day, my friends.
