Confidence is supposed to set you free, so why does it sometimes feel like the better you get, the harder it is to learn? We pull apart a sneaky leadership trap: the same confidence that helps you start a new job, take a risk, or step into responsibility can quietly turn into a shield you can’t put down.

We talk about what happens when you stop being the beginner and become the person who’s “supposed to know.” That identity can make admitting uncertainty feel dangerous, so we cover, overwork, and explain our way out of the very feedback that could make us better. Instead of hearing input as information, we treat it like an attack. And then we double down on effort, telling ourselves that if we just push longer and care more, it will all sort itself out.

Here’s the shift we’re aiming for: not less confidence, but less defensiveness. We explore how effort can create a blind spot when it’s used to avoid the truth, why pride rarely feels like arrogance from the inside, and how staying curious changes everything. You’ll walk away with a clear question to ask yourself, plus a practical way to start receiving hard feedback without needing to “win” the conversation.

If you want someone in your corner who tells you the truth kindly, we share how one-on-one growth coaching can help. Subscribe for more, share this with a high performer who needs it, and leave a review with the truth you’re ready to face.

Welcome To The Hotline

SPEAKER_00

You're listening to the Growth Instigators Hotline. I'm Aaron Havens and this is message 605. If you're alive, you're leading something, and what makes you better at one thing makes you better at all of them. So let's grow.

Confidence Gets You Moving

SPEAKER_00

Confidence gets you started. It's the thing that lets you try the new job, ask the hard questions, sign up for the thing you're not sure you can do, you need it. Nothing begins without it. Confidence.

When Being The Expert Traps You

SPEAKER_00

But the same confidence that gets you started can quietly keep you stuck. Here's how. At some point you stop being the beginner and start being the person who's supposed to know. And once you're supposed to know, admitting you don't starts to feel dangerous. So you cover, you work harder instead of asking, you explain instead of listening. You treat every bit of feedback like an attack to survive instead of information to use. And you tell yourself, effort will sort it out. If you just try harder, push longer, care more, I'll get there.

Effort Can Hide The Real Issue

SPEAKER_00

But effort has built a blind spot. Effort can't fix a problem. You refuse to look at directly. You can pour hours into the wrong thing and call it dedication when really it's just a very busy way of avoiding the truth.

Choose Curiosity Over Defense

SPEAKER_00

That's the decision this whole idea rests on. Not to be less confident, but to be less defended. To let someone tell you the hard thing without needing to win the conversation, to hear you're not good at this. And instead of flinching, get curious, my friends. Stay curious, my friends. Because here's what nobody warns you about pride. It doesn't feel like arrogance from the inside. It feels like protecting yourself. It feels like reasonable. That's exactly what makes it so expensive. The most capable people I know aren't the ones with no weaknesses. No, they're the ones who stopped pretending they didn't have any and got to work. So here's the question today.

The One Question To Face

SPEAKER_00

What's one area of your life where you've been calling it effort when honestly, you've just been avoiding hearing the truth about it?

Growth Coaching Invitation And Close
