And don't get me wrong, effort matters. But if you're honest, effort is often the thing we hide behind.

It's easier to just work harder at something than to stop and hear that we're not good at it or that we've been going about it all the wrong way. Because working harder still lets you feel like the hero of the story. You're trying, you're giving it everything. Hearing the truth doesn't feel heroic at all. It feels like a loss. Somebody tells you the hard thing. You're not great at this. This isn't working. This part is on you, and everything in you wants to defend, explain, push back, win the conversation instead of learn from it. Effort is the easy part.
