00:07:58.028 But I wanted to start off this morning talking to you about stories. 00:07:59.071 --> 00:07:59.973 We love stories. 00:07:59.973 --> 00:08:03.769 We introduce stories to our children at a very young age. 00:08:03.769 --> 00:08:04.951 We read books. 00:08:04.951 --> 00:08:13.512 Television knows and understands that we love stories, and so they create what is called a TV series where they tell one big, continuous story. 00:08:13.512 --> 00:08:16.670 Movies understand the concept of a story. 00:08:16.670 --> 00:08:19.329 That's why they are formatted in the way that they are. 00:08:19.329 --> 00:08:39.533 In fact, one of the things that's happening now is that businesses and companies are realizing the powerfulness of stories and they're now turning their commercials not into a opportunity to share their product, but instead they are now using commercials to tell a story about their product. 00:08:39.533 --> 00:08:48.077 In doing that is to get you to connect emotionally, because stories have a way of making us connect emotionally. 00:08:48.077 --> 00:09:11.136 Stories have a way of making us escape life and be immersed into the story, and so commercials are now trying to do that, and one of the reasons they're doing that is because studies have shown that if people hear a story, they are likely to share it, and so what companies and businesses are realizing is that they can share their product with you through a story. 00:09:11.136 --> 00:09:13.663 Then you're more likely to go tell somebody else about it. 00:09:13.663 --> 00:09:19.942 It's really kind of smart and great and brilliant, because all people love stories. 00:09:19.942 --> 00:09:25.222 I found my daughter she's 18 months old Each morning this week as I went in to wake her up. 00:09:25.222 --> 00:09:31.052 She's already been awake and what she has done is taken her hand and reached through the back of her crib to her bookshelf. 00:09:31.052 --> 00:09:40.567 And she's now reaching up and pulling out books and she's looking at stories, because even young people love and appreciate stories, even though she's just looking at a picture. 00:09:40.567 --> 00:09:43.909 And so this morning, what I thought I would do is share a story with you. 00:09:43.909 --> 00:09:52.562 It goes like this Matt was born in a chaotic environment where at-risk children were often neglected. 00:09:53.243 --> 00:09:58.774 To protect him, his mother placed him in a safe haven, a foster care system. 00:09:58.774 --> 00:10:07.481 She did attempt to reunify with him for many months and many years, but eventually it just never worked out and she gave up. 00:10:07.481 --> 00:10:11.370 He was eventually adopted by a wealthy family. 00:10:11.370 --> 00:10:15.729 He grew up in a luxury home and he attended one of the best schools. 00:10:15.729 --> 00:10:25.653 Despite that comfortable life, matt never forgot his roots and he oftentimes felt a deep connection to his community and the community struggles. 00:10:25.653 --> 00:11:04.508 One day after intervening in a violent situation, matt found himself in a position where he felt like he had to run and be on the flea of his current living situation, and so he ran to a small town, and while there he started working as a mechanic, and as he worked as a mechanic, he then found himself a wife and he settled down into that life, working for his father-in-law at the mechanic shop and kind of in that moment he just stayed complacent after nearly 40 years of living this life as a mechanic. 00:11:05.785 --> 00:11:08.799 Matt got a call that he wasn't expecting After nearly 40 years of living this life as a mechanic. 00:11:08.799 --> 00:11:13.639 Matt got a call that he wasn't expecting. 00:11:13.639 --> 00:11:18.580 While cleaning up some old files, the foster care system that he was a part of found a letter that was addressed to Matt. 00:11:18.961 --> 00:11:27.168 The letter stated that there was an influx of children who had come from similar situations as he had and that things were kind of getting out of hands. 00:11:27.168 --> 00:11:35.226 They were running out of funds and these children were no longer being protected and Matt was told that he was needed. 00:11:35.226 --> 00:11:44.046 The system needed Matt to come in and to advocate for those who are like him, To help make a change. 00:11:44.941 --> 00:11:46.125 To turn things around. 00:11:48.341 --> 00:12:00.893 When Matt received that call, he thought to himself, and in his head and in his mind, there was not one thing he could think of that would qualify him for that position. 00:12:00.893 --> 00:12:05.927 The truth is is that we all have a story. 00:12:05.927 --> 00:12:14.010 There have been events, there have been obstacles, there's been even trauma that has led us to the point that we're in today. 00:12:14.010 --> 00:12:20.307 In our story this morning, we have a young man who has experienced well he has experienced it. 00:12:20.860 --> 00:12:29.003 He's experienced the many ups and downs of life and he's gone through it. 00:12:29.003 --> 00:12:35.245 He's experienced the many ups and downs of life and he's gone through it, and so I have a couple questions I want you to just think about this morning as you're listening, or maybe even pause and think about these questions. 00:12:35.245 --> 00:12:39.182 Question number one is this being bounced around from family to family. 00:12:39.182 --> 00:12:42.067 What is Matt experiencing? 00:12:42.067 --> 00:12:45.094 He's being bounced around. 00:12:45.094 --> 00:12:48.770 His normal life doesn't last long. 00:12:48.770 --> 00:12:51.427 You know he was born into one family. 00:12:54.600 --> 00:12:57.405 Then in the foster system and then adopted. 00:12:57.405 --> 00:13:10.812 All of the meanwhile a mother was trying to get him back home, so I'm sure there was visitation and so there was all kinds of probably rules and rule changes and expectations that would have changed throughout the years. 00:13:10.812 --> 00:13:12.624 So what is he experiencing? 00:13:12.624 --> 00:13:13.586 That's question number one. 00:13:13.586 --> 00:13:20.279 Number two is when he's on the run, when he's fleeing away from the situation that he's put himself in after being violent with someone. 00:13:20.279 --> 00:13:22.422 What emotions is Matt feeling? 00:13:22.422 --> 00:13:23.403 You know? 00:13:24.023 --> 00:13:25.423 I think about this and I think well. 00:13:27.647 --> 00:13:37.801 It sounds like he had a connection with his community that he didn't necessarily live in but he grew up in. 00:13:37.801 --> 00:13:40.011 Now he's running away from that. 00:13:40.011 --> 00:13:43.114 Now he's running away from the family that adopted him. 00:13:43.114 --> 00:13:46.013 Think about all those struggles and different things. 00:13:46.013 --> 00:13:53.578 And then number three is just this idea of what are the dangers of being complacent of settling in. 00:13:53.578 --> 00:14:05.857 In Exodus, chapter 3, moses sees an unusual sight that he did not expect to see. 00:14:05.857 --> 00:14:11.495 That morning when he woke up, he sees a bush that's burning, but it's not really burning up. 00:14:11.654 --> 00:14:22.514 It's just on fire, and so Moses goes over and we're not going to focus on all of that happens, but I want to lead you to verse 10, where it says now go, for I'm sending you to the Pharaoh. 00:14:22.514 --> 00:14:28.051 You must lead my people, israel, out of Egypt. 00:14:28.852 --> 00:14:33.399 But Moses protested to God who am I to appear before the Pharaoh who? 00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:37.130 am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt? 00:14:37.130 --> 00:14:38.875 I? 00:14:38.875 --> 00:14:47.477 Want to focus in on this story for just a second, not really on this story in particular, but I want to go back and look at the life of Moses. 00:14:47.477 --> 00:14:52.470 There is a reason that Moses says, no, I'm not the guy. 00:14:53.307 --> 00:15:00.210 Many of us over our faith years have probably told ourselves if God told me directly to do something, oh I would jump at it. 00:15:00.210 --> 00:15:17.792 But Moses kind of proves that that's not the case, that Satan would still work, that our beliefs and our thoughts about ourselves would probably make us hesitate from jumping at the opportunity of serving God when he says to go. 00:15:17.792 --> 00:15:20.636 So why is it? 00:15:20.636 --> 00:15:21.839 What is going on? 00:15:21.839 --> 00:15:30.851 What has happened, that Moses feels in the presence of God that he's not good enough to be on the mission? 00:15:33.134 --> 00:15:34.455 So here's the story of Moses. 00:15:34.615 --> 00:15:42.902 Moses' mother gives birth to Moses and she hides him for as long as she can, Because by law he is supposed to be killed. 00:15:42.902 --> 00:15:49.004 By law he's supposed to be placed in the river. 00:15:49.004 --> 00:15:51.080 But to give him a chance, she does what the law says she puts him in the river. 00:15:51.080 --> 00:15:51.624 She places him there. 00:15:51.624 --> 00:16:01.133 However, in her creativeness, in her desire to just give him a chance, she puts him in a basket that she's waterproofed. 00:16:01.133 --> 00:16:24.298 Upon floating down the river, he is found by the Pharaoh's daughter and then, when she pulls out Moses from the basket, she is met by Moses' sister, who suggests that she can find someone to raise and to nurse him, To which Moses' mother is now hired and being paid to raise her own baby boy. 00:16:25.745 --> 00:16:40.033 Months or maybe even years later, moses is returned to the Pharaoh's palace where he would be taught to be an Egyptian man, where, I believe, technically he would be prepared to be a future Pharaoh, as he was technically now a prince. 00:16:42.846 --> 00:16:43.788 While in the palace. 00:16:43.908 --> 00:16:47.356 He still has a strong desire to be with his people. 00:16:47.356 --> 00:16:56.135 We understand that because when we read through Exodus, we find out that he is often visiting and watching his Hebrew people. 00:16:56.135 --> 00:17:03.708 One day, while visiting, he sees an Egyptian man beating and treating a Hebrew man poorly. 00:17:03.708 --> 00:17:23.288 Moses takes it personal still having a connection to his people and he goes to stop the man and in the process he ends up killing him and he buries him in the sand, thinking that nobody knows nobody saw it that he got away with it. 00:17:23.428 --> 00:17:33.733 Well, the next day, he still has this desire to be with his people, even though he's probably feeling some kind of guilt and shame and probably knows he's not supposed to go out. 00:17:33.733 --> 00:17:39.671 He still has that strong desire to be around his Hebrew people and so he goes out and he visits. 00:17:39.671 --> 00:17:48.414 This time he sees two Hebrew men in a fight and he tells them to stop and they say are you the prince or are you the judge? 00:17:48.444 --> 00:17:49.209 Who are you to say? 00:17:49.288 --> 00:17:49.691 anything. 00:17:49.691 --> 00:17:54.909 We know what you did yesterday you killed a man. 00:17:54.909 --> 00:18:03.178 Shame, guilt, fear enter the picture. 00:18:03.178 --> 00:18:06.221 Moses begins to run. 00:18:06.221 --> 00:18:08.008 Pharaoh finds out. 00:18:08.008 --> 00:18:12.881 Now his stepdad wants him to be dead and he flees. 00:18:12.881 --> 00:18:16.568 He flees to a town called Midian, a small country village. 00:18:16.568 --> 00:18:29.891 While there, he's sitting by the well and he serves some water to some ladies and in return, their father invites him to dinner, and dinner turns into a marriage to one of the man's daughters. 00:18:29.891 --> 00:18:46.244 Moses settles in and has been there for 40 years tending his sheep actually tending the sheep of his father-in-law. 00:18:48.170 --> 00:18:49.715 That's when this moment takes place. 00:18:49.715 --> 00:18:51.972 Verse 10, now go, for I am sending you to the Pharaoh. 00:18:51.972 --> 00:18:54.227 You must leave my people of Israel out of Egypt. 00:18:54.227 --> 00:18:55.851 But Moses protested to God. 00:18:55.851 --> 00:18:57.654 Who am I to appear to the Pharaoh? 00:18:57.654 --> 00:19:00.468 Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt? 00:19:00.468 --> 00:19:19.297 Knowing the life of Moses and knowing what leads up to this moment, it makes a lot of sense While Moses. 00:19:19.317 --> 00:19:19.999 Why Moses doesn't? 00:19:20.019 --> 00:19:21.585 think he's the guy for the job. 00:19:21.585 --> 00:19:23.785 Moses has been bounced around from family to family. 00:19:23.785 --> 00:19:26.737 Moses has been on the run. 00:19:26.737 --> 00:19:37.529 And Moses has kind of settled in to a state of being complacent. 00:19:37.529 --> 00:19:39.396 Think about it he's worked for 40 years as a shepherd for his father-in-law's sheep. 00:19:39.396 --> 00:19:45.212 He's never invested in his own, he's never moved on and tried to do something different, but instead he's just kind of settled into. 00:19:45.212 --> 00:19:47.989 This is who he is and this is the way things have to be. 00:19:47.989 --> 00:19:55.872 Hopefully, as you've been listening along, you've been able to connect the dots that the story of Matt and the story of Moses is actually really struggles. 00:20:07.490 --> 00:20:16.864 Moses has had a lot of ups and downs, highs and lows, valley moments, and so how does he handle that? 00:20:16.864 --> 00:20:20.065 How do we handle our brokenness? 00:20:20.065 --> 00:20:23.204 Many of us probably relate to the story of Moses. 00:20:23.204 --> 00:20:27.946 Many of us have maybe felt the feeling of being bounced around. 00:20:27.946 --> 00:20:30.875 Maybe some of us have felt the feeling of being on the run. 00:20:30.875 --> 00:20:35.646 Our sin and our shame and our guilt has made us feel like we have been fleeing for years. 00:20:36.976 --> 00:20:42.603 Or for many of us maybe we've just gotten complacent and this is how life has to be and this is how life has to work. 00:20:42.603 --> 00:20:44.106 This is the family. 00:20:44.106 --> 00:20:44.935 This is what we do. 00:20:44.935 --> 00:20:50.188 Well, I want to give you just a few things here this morning of how to help. 00:20:50.188 --> 00:20:52.598 How do I handle my brokenness? 00:20:52.598 --> 00:20:55.003 Number one is this Continue to serve. 00:20:55.003 --> 00:20:57.578 Continue to serve in your brokenness. 00:20:57.578 --> 00:21:06.432 Exodus 2, verse 17, tells us that Moses jumped up and rescued the girls from the shepherds, and then he drew water for their flocks. 00:21:06.432 --> 00:21:11.724 So, while on the run for murder, moses is fleeing a situation I would imagine. 00:21:11.724 --> 00:21:12.626 His heart is broken. 00:21:12.707 --> 00:21:32.877 He's been separated from his now blood family, from his mother, from his sister and in an attempt to connect with his people I'm doing air quotes here he loses the only other people he has, which is the Pharaoh and the Pharaoh's family. 00:21:32.877 --> 00:21:33.358 Moses is now tired. 00:21:33.358 --> 00:21:34.480 Moses is broken. 00:21:34.480 --> 00:21:35.884 Moses is lost. 00:21:35.884 --> 00:21:46.785 Moses is probably feeling very isolated, but he does something here that he's probably never had to do before he serves. 00:21:46.785 --> 00:21:53.914 Moses grew up in the palace, probably being served every day. 00:21:53.914 --> 00:22:04.060 Moses in this moment being humbled decides that it's now his opportunity to serve. 00:22:04.142 --> 00:22:06.628 And I'll be honest many times in my life when I feel broken or heartbroken, I want to quit. 00:22:06.628 --> 00:22:08.493 I want to say things like it's not worth it. 00:22:08.493 --> 00:22:09.636 I want to say I'm tired. 00:22:09.636 --> 00:22:12.123 I want to say things like oh, somebody else can do it. 00:22:12.865 --> 00:22:23.358 But Moses teaches us a very valuable lesson that even in our brokenness, we continue to serve, and that's exactly what Moses did. 00:22:23.358 --> 00:22:31.363 Number two is this that we can trust God in the midst of it, in the midst of our brokenness, we can trust that God is there. 00:22:31.363 --> 00:22:43.450 Now, this is a hard one, because in the midst of your brokenness, of your story, it's difficult to look past all of the rubble and see that God is truly in the moment. 00:22:43.450 --> 00:22:54.567 So let's do it this way, let's see how God has been in the story of Moses and then hopefully that will encourage you to know that God is in your moments. 00:22:55.915 --> 00:22:59.467 Exodus 2, verse 9 says Take this baby and nurse him for me. son and he names him. 00:24:28.019 --> 00:24:30.646 The translation for us would be stranger. 00:24:32.175 --> 00:24:35.045 So it tells us that for forty years Moses has lived this life. 00:24:35.045 --> 00:24:41.083 Moses has started his family, moses has been a citizen or a resident of. 00:24:41.963 --> 00:24:44.930 Midian and he still feels like he's a stranger. 00:24:44.930 --> 00:24:48.917 But here's the best part. 00:24:49.199 --> 00:24:52.105 Even in all of this, god is going to use Moses. 00:24:52.105 --> 00:24:55.961 God is going to use Moses in a way that only God can do. 00:24:55.961 --> 00:25:03.263 But you have to come back in the next weeks or you have to keep listening in the next few weeks to understand what he's going to do with Moses. 00:25:03.263 -->
