Fixed on Love: Jesus Submits to the Mission (Part 3/4)
Good morning everybody. Let's begin our morning with a word of prayer. Father, we just thank you for this morning and we thank you for your family that's in here with us, father, and we pray, father, if there's anybody in here that needs to know your Son and needs to have a relationship with you, that their hearts are pricked in here this morning and that they just hear something that will open up their hearts to you and open up their minds to a relationship with you. We thank you for your son and what he did for us, and we thank you for the choice that he made to die for us, for our sins, instead of us facing that death. And as we think about the Easter season coming up, father, and his resurrection, we just want to be mindful of the great sacrifice that that involved. We thank you for that and we invite the Holy Spirit in here this morning, lord, to just be with us and worship with us, and it's in your Son's name we pray, amen, amen.
Speaker 2:Majesty, worship his majesty Unto Jesus. Be all glory, power and praise Majesty kingdom, authority Flow from His throne unto His own. Magnify, come, glorify Christ Jesus the King Majesty, Majesty, worship His Majesty Jesus, who died, now glorified, king of all kings, so exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus. Speaker 2:Majesty, worship His Majesty. Jesus who died, now glorified King of all kings. Jesus who died, now glorified King of all kings. It's Christ alone my hope is found. He is my light, my strength, my song. This cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love. What heights of love. What depths of peace, when fears are still, when strivings cease. My comforter, my all in all, here in the love of Christ. I stand In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe, this gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones he came to save. Till on that cross.
Speaker 2:As Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied, for every sin on him was laid. Here in the death of Christ. I live there in the ground. His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain, then bursting forth in glorious day. For I am his and he is mine, bought with the precious. No guilt in life, no fear in death. This is the power of Christ in me, From life's first cry to final breath. Jesus commands my destiny. Destiny. No power of hell, no scheme. For all that you've done, I will thank you For all that you're going to do, for all that you've promised and all that you are. Is all that has carried me through.

Now I thank you Jesus. I thank you gratefully. Thank you, thank you, and I thank you. Thank you, Lord, and I thank you. Thank you, Lord. Thank you for loving and setting me free. Thank you for giving your life just for me. How I thank you Jesus. I thank you Gratefully. Thank you, Thank you.
Speaker 1:Amen, please be seated.
Speaker 4:Alright. John 13, 4-5 says so. He got up from the table, he took off his robe and wrapped a towel around his waist and he poured water into a basin, and then he began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that he had around him. Let's begin with the word of prayer. Father, we thank you for this morning. God, we thank you for an opportunity to get together and, father, we're thankful for this time of the year that we get to celebrate around the world your son. We're thankful for Jesus and his life, his example, his interactions, his love for us, and it's through all of these different events that we're looking at that we see that we're thankful for his ultimate sacrifice, your ultimate sacrifice for us. And, father, I pray that you would open up our hearts, our ears and our eyes to the things that you want us to see and know, and that we can go into this world and continue to be a light for your glory. Thank you for Jesus. It's in his name we pray, amen. Good morning, I'm going to announce it again. I know Mark said it earlier, but I told Woody I would say it again. So if you see Woody, you can say that I announced it okay.
Speaker 4:Walk for Water is May 5th or May 4th. I'm testing you. It's May 4th. I was definitely testing you. It's May 4th. It is at Buckeye Trail High School and it is going to start at 3.30. Registration starts at 2.30. This is the ninth walk that Stop 9 has been a part of, so that's pretty cool and I think most years we've been able to raise enough support to put a couple wells in at a time. So I think we're over double digits in wells. So that's a neat thing to be a part of. The Buckeye Trail FCA is kind of leading that and we are partnering with them, and so we'd like for you to be a part of it. The key thing is I know everybody likes to get the T-shirt and that is what Woody is emphasizing you need to start registering now so that we have enough T-shirts at the event so you get one. So all you're doing is just registering that you're going to come, you put your t-shirt size in there and then you'll get a t-shirt the day of. So that's all we're emphasizing at this point. Still got a month or so before the event. But that's Walk for Water. Everybody got it All right.
Speaker 4:How many of you have ever driven somewhere and you pulled into the location and you put the car in park and you had that moment of I have no idea how I got here, right? Okay, that's many of us, right? Yes, I see a lot of hands. You get caught up in music, you get caught up in life, you get caught up in your thoughts. Maybe, hopefully, you're not watching Netflix or something while you drive, but maybe you're caught up in something.
Speaker 4:But there are moments where you drive and then, without even realizing it, you're there and you don't remember the drive. I remember in college I went to OVU in Parkersburg, so it was a 45-minute drive and I'd come home on the weekends and I'd drive back to Parkersburg on Sunday night, and I did that for weeks. And I'd come home on the weekends and I'd drive back to Parkersburg on Sunday night, and I did that for weeks. And there were many times where I'd get off the Emerson exit and go. I don't remember going through Marietta.
Speaker 4:I don't even know what happened, but those are things that happen, or maybe this has happened to you that one person don't say a name, that one person comes up and starts talking to you and before you realize it, it's been multiple minutes and you have no idea what they have said to you. You're just kind of doing the, you're doing the mm-hmm, mm-hmm, yeah, okay, yeah, we can do that. And then you get done with the conversation and you have no idea what you agreed to. You're helping them move their whole house next week and you just gave them the mm-hmm. Okay, mm-hmm, yeah. But you know that there's people that come and you just kind of maybe it's not a certain person, but maybe you're just in a busy part of life and they start talking, they're communicating with you and out of nowhere you're like I have no idea what has just happened.
Speaker 4:Or maybe you sit down to watch TV and it's eight o'clock and you're watching TV and then it says do you want to watch the next episode? And you don't have to click the button, it just starts playing it and so you watch the next episode and then you're sitting there and then that screen pops up again. You don't even realize it, and it starts playing the next episode. And then, finally, you look down at your phone and it's 3 am and you've spent the whole morning and evening watching a TV show. You ever done that? Raise your hands, yes, get caught up in Netflix Yep, you got it. Or maybe it's your phone. You sit there on your phone and you start scrolling and it's like six o'clock and you're scrolling and you're scrolling and you're on level 55 of Candy Crush and you just keep going and the next thing you know it's 10 o'clock. You thought where did those four hours go? They just disappeared. All right, we've all been there.
Speaker 4:Our attention can get hijacked by busyness, it can get hijacked by distractions, it can get hijacked by stress. Stress can take moments away from us, even comfort we can get comfortable in situations and it can kind of hijack our attention. And then there's fear. That hijacks our attention as well. Well, we've been continuing our series on this idea of fixed and looking at really the last few moments or the last week of Jesus's life and really emphasizing the idea of, in these moments, what was Jesus fixated on? And I know it's Palm Sunday and we're not going to talk about Palm Sunday because we did that two weeks ago.
Speaker 4:Okay, so I hope you celebrate Palm Sunday today and that's a thing that you can read about and study at home. We looked at it a couple weeks ago, so if you weren't here, sorry, you missed it, but we're jumping in. We got to get to the end of Jesus's life and there was all kinds of distractions, there was all kinds of things going on in that last week, but we continually notice that Jesus is fixated on one thing and we're going to jump in that today. So close your eyes or look at the ground, or just look at me, because I know some of you won't close your eyes. You just stare at me. That's okay. We're going to try to put ourselves in this story again tonight or this morning. So here we go.
Speaker 4:Just imagine the lights flickering against the wall that night and how the shadows of all those who are in the upper room are shining against the wall in the shadows. It was Passover, but it didn't feel like a celebration. It almost felt like a goodbye. Jesus looked different. He looked focused. Everything seemed a little bit heavier that evening, but he's not afraid. He looked like a man that's walking towards something that nobody else could see.
Speaker 4:You're reclined at the table, you smell bread and wine hanging in the air and then you see Jesus stand up and he takes off His outer robe. He wraps a towel around His waist and you watch a little bit confused as he kneels down at your feet, at everybody's feet. The hands that formed the stars are now scrubbing the dust between your toes. He comes to Judas yes, judas and he washes his feet too, in the same way, gently and intentionally, like he loved him, because he did. Then he looked around the room and he says one of you will betray me. And the room got quiet. Judas took the bread and he slipped into the night. Yet Jesus didn't panic. He looks around the room, he looks at you and he says Love one another as I have loved you.
Speaker 4:At this time you think it's just another one of His teachings, but now you know it's the commandment of a man that's about to go to the cross, that he was giving you one final mission to carry His love into the world. So you leave the room, you walk with Him in the darkness and he goes across the valley and into the olive trees and into the garden. He asks you to pray and you try, but your eyes are heavy. It's been a long night. Then you see the torches coming in the distance. There's the soldiers, there's the crowd and there's your friend, judas, at the front. Jesus didn't run, he doesn't hide, but he steps forward and says who are you looking for? And they say Jesus of Nazareth. And he says I am.
Speaker 4:You watch as everybody kind of falls back, not because he shouted, not because he's angry, not because he fought, but because of who he is. They step back, you reach for your sword. You thought for a moment this is the revolution that you were waiting for. So you swing, cutting off the ear of a man, and Jesus looks around and he says put the swords away. And he bends down and he touches the wound, healing the man, healing the very man who would chain Him moments later. It was like. This is the moment that Jesus had been waiting for all. This time he lets them bind his hands, not because he had to, but because he loved to, because he was focused and fixated on love and on the cross. That's the moment that we step into this morning. That's the part of the story that we've reached. Before the betrayal, before the beating, before the cross, jesus is fixated on love.
Speaker 4:John 13 is where we're going to pick up this morning. It says before the Passover celebration, jesus knew that the hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth and now he's going to love them to the very end. Jesus was fixated on love. You probably could have guessed that by now if you're waiting for that answer on your outline. He was fixated on love.
Speaker 4:We get verses 4 and 5, where it says he got up from the table, he took off His robe and he wrapped a towel around His waist and he poured water into the basin and then he began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel he had around Him. Now all four Gospels record the Last Supper. John gives a whole lot of detail and that's why we're going to look at John this morning. John says things like this he puts his garment to the side, he pours water into the basin, he began to wash and then he began to wipe with a towel. He could have simply said Jesus washed our feet, but instead he gives us every little detail, because that moment was a big moment for John and the disciples. It's almost like it's another acted out parable, and we'll get to that in just a second.
Speaker 4:The job of washing somebody's feet you've heard this before was the lowest job. It was for the lowest servant to do. But in this moment Jesus gets up and begins to wash the feet. It wouldn't have even been allowed for Jesus, as the teacher, to ask his students to wash his feet. That's how unheard this moment is. But Jesus does the unthinkable and gets up.
Speaker 4:Now, the table that we see this is an image of it. It would have maybe been a U-shape. The idea is that it would have been a low table, not like a table we sit at today. It's almost like a coffee table and I have no idea if that's an accurate description. But here's what I want you to think about. Description, but here's what I want you to think about. This was a very intimate moment. There was really no hiding in this moment. They were all together, all looking at one another. They're sitting, leaning on one another. There's no hiding the dirt on their feet. There's no hiding the smell of their feet in the room. They're there together and in the room they're there together.
Speaker 4:And in the moment Jesus rises up, rose up from the table, not saying anything, but just starts filling up the water basin with water, grabs His towel and starts wiping the feet. It's an acted out parable. Jesus rose from the supper, from His place of comfort. This isn't on your outline. I threw this in at the last second.
Speaker 4:He rises from the supper for rest and comfort. He lays aside His garment, taking off His covering, he takes His towel and girded Himself. He's ready to work and he pours out the water into a clean basin, ready to clean, and he sat down after washing His feet. Well, that's a lot of what Jesus did for us. He left the throne of heaven, his place of rest, and came down to earth, laid aside His glory and His heavenly covering for us, and he took the form of a servant. That's what Jesus did. That's what His whole life was about being a servant. And he came ready to work and he poured out His blood to cleanse us from the guilt and the penalty of sin. And then he sits down at the right hand of God.
Speaker 4:It's an acted out parable we keep going through. There's a lot that we're going to try to get through this morning. Hopefully it doesn't drag on for too long. So he washes their feet and if you remember, as he's washing their feet, there's this one disciple that we're going to focus in on a little bit today. There's this one disciple that always had something to say. We've talked about him plenty of times before.
Speaker 4:When he gets to this certain disciple, this disciple doesn't want him to wash his feet. That disciple is it's Peter. Right, remember that part of the story. When he gets to Peter, peter says you're not going to wash my feet. And Jesus simply tells him unless I do that, you won't have really a part in the story. And so then Peter changes his mind. Guess what he wants. He wants the full car wash. He's paying the supreme value. He's won $22. He wants the ceramic coating and everything. He changes his tone completely. Fine, if you have to wash my feet for me to be in connection with you, then you wash everything. I'll take it all. He doesn't really get it, does? He Kind of went over His head a little bit.
Speaker 4:But then he commands the disciples, after washing His feet, after this intimate moment with His students, with His friends, with His peers, he says since I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet. I have given you this example to follow. Do as I have done to you. What's he commanding you and I to do? To serve one another, to help each other out. What's he commanding you and I to do? To serve one another, to help each other out. Anything we can do for each other that washes away the grime of this world and the dust of defeat and discouragement is feet washing. He's just simply asking us to love one another, to encourage one another, to help one another. Because what the world wants to do is it wants to encourage one another to help one another. Because the world, what the world wants to do, is it wants to pick out everybody's dirt, it wants to highlight their dirt and it wants to put it on blast and let everybody know about the dirt that's on that person's feet.
Speaker 4:Jesus didn't get up and say, peter, your feet stink. He didn't say a word. He just got up and helped Because that was the ministry, that was the part that he was into. It was an eventful dinner party After Jesus had told them that they needed to love one another. He then tells them one of you is going to betray Me, and I think I've had this wrong my whole life. I've always thought that they just all knew it was Judas. I just always thought they all assumed it was Judas, but I don't think they knew it at all.
Speaker 4:In the moment, when Jesus says the words one of you is going to betray me. They start looking around. Which one is it who is going to be the one? I want you to notice this. This is John's humor. Okay, john would oftentimes refer to himself as the one that Jesus loved. Now watch how this plays out. The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the table. It's a humble brag moment. I was sitting next to Jesus. It was me. I was sitting there. Watch this, though. Watch what happens. Peter motioned to him who is he talking about? So I envisioned this. Here's the table. They're sitting at the U-shaped table. John is next to Jesus, peter is over in the corner going John.
Speaker 4:John Ask him who it is Like. He's leaning around everybody else. He's like ask him, ask him who it is, because Peter's thinking I already said something stupid earlier. Sorry for saying stupid, my kids would make me do push-ups or something. He said something silly earlier, so now he's just trying to get John's attention. John, you ask? You're the one that Jesus loves. Ask who it is. Here's how it unfolds. So the disciple that disciple leaned over to Jesus. John leaned over to Jesus. Lord, who is it? Who is it Lord? Who is it?
Speaker 4:I always read this as if Jesus said out loud to the whole group of people it is the one whom I give the bread dipped in the bowl. And when he dipped it he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. But I'm not sure that Jesus said this out loud. I think he leaned back into John and said it's the one I'm about to give the bread. This was a conversation between John and Jesus. It wasn't with the whole crowd, because I would be willing to bet if Peter overheard that it was going to be Judas. Peter was jumping up. Peter was going to shove him across the room and say no, you're not. And so this was this moment between John and Jesus where he says it's the one I give the bread to. I don't know that it was a public statement, but he dipped the bread, which was an honor. It's almost like a toast. Jesus is loving Judas till the very end. He washed his feet. He's giving him the best part of the bread. He's loving him till the very end.
Speaker 4:And then we read that Judas slips out and none of them think anything about it. If you read the account in John, they think he's going to go pay for the meal because he was the guy that handled the money bag, and so it just kind of emphasizes the idea. I don't think they thought this was the moment of betrayal. They didn't know. Judas just kind of slips out. Jesus tells him to hurry and to go do what he's going to do. It says none of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant. Since Judas was the treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling them to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the poor. So Judas left at once into the night.
Speaker 4:And then Jesus starts to tell them that it's time for the Son of man to bring glory to the Father. It's time for Him to go. And Peter, in his emotion, says I'll go with you, jesus, I'm going to go wherever you go, I'll go with you until death. In his emotion, in that moment, he had 100% commitment to Jesus. Remember what Jesus tells him, though no, you won't, peter. No, you won't. In fact, by the end of the evening you're going to deny me what Three times. Good job, three times you're going to deny me. And then you'll remember that you did it because the rooster's going to crow. What a moment for Peter. Well, it probably broke his heart.
Speaker 4:I would imagine that Peter, for the rest of the time, was thinking how am I going to prove to be faithful? What am I going to do next that just proves how faithful I am to Jesus? How am I going to prove to be faithful? What am I going to do next that just proves how faithful I am to Jesus? How am I going to prove this to be wrong? I don't want to betray Him, I don't want to deny Him. And then there's the next three chapters. We're going to kind of just go through this quickly. I put on your outline there, judges 14 through 17, and just a bunch of lines. If you want to write anything down, I'm just going to kind of try to summarize what happens over the next three chapters.
Speaker 4:John 14, verse 1, says don't let your hearts be troubled. This is what he tells the disciples in the upper room. Judas has already left. Jesus has already said one of you is going to betray me, and Peter's already been told you is going to betray me, and Peter's already been told you're going to deny me. And now he's telling him that I'm leaving. But he leaves him with this don't be troubled, don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my father's house.
Speaker 4:Did they have a reason to be troubled? Absolutely. Their world had been wrecked that evening. During that dinner party, they had found out that one of them is a traitor, one of them is going to deny him and that their leader, their teacher, their friend and their mentor is going to leave. But he leaves them with this Just trust and believe. There's a future reunion in heaven. One day I'm going to a place. There's going to be lots of rooms there. You'll come eventually, but it's not going to be today.
Speaker 4:He goes on to tell them that God is still going to work, that the Holy Spirit is coming and that Jesus will still be known around the world because their work as disciples will start. John 15, he tells them to abide in him, that everything that is happening right now is all about love and that they need to continue to love one another. John 16, he tells them that the Helper's coming, that the Advocate's coming. We talked about that a few months ago, remember. He says that it's better for me to go so that the Helper can come. The Holy Spirit. He tells them things like I'm overcoming the world and peace will come.
Speaker 4:But then in John 17, you get Jesus' prayer. Jesus starts to pray and we'll put a few of these up there. John 17, his prayer is this he prays for Himself that God would receive the glory. He prays that God would, that God would receive the glory. He prays that God would watch over the disciples and bring joy to the disciples. He prays that God would keep them from evil, that God would set them apart and use the disciples. He then goes on to pray for you and I, for all that believe in Him, to experience the love of the Father. He prays for things like unity, for love. He prays that we would have the desire to be with one another. He prays that we would experience the same love that he experienced from His Father. And so Jesus was fixated on love. As the worst moment in our head comes into play, for Jesus, he was fixated on love. He was also fixated on obedience. John, chapter 18,.
Speaker 4:After Jesus gets done praying, he leads the disciples to the garden. In verse 4, it tells us that Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen, so he stepped forward to meet them. Who are you looking for? He takes the disciples to the garden, knowing that Judas was coming with the soldiers and with the priest. So he takes them to the place where they. It was a familiar place. It would have been a place that Judas would have known to go. It would have been a place that Judas would have known to go. It would have been a place where he would have known to go. Look for Jesus. They'd been there before. They had prayed together there, before they may have even had set up their camp there before. And that's where Jesus goes.
Speaker 4:I want you to understand Jesus wasn't trapped, jesus wasn't outnumbered, he wasn't caught off guard. He was 100% being obedient to the Father's plan. He walks into the garden not to escape, but to enter into obedience. When Judas showed up with the soldiers and the priests, jesus didn't run, he didn't resist. Instead, he just offers himself up in full surrender and full obedience. And then, lastly, he was fixated on the mission. This was all part of the plan.
Speaker 4:When they ask, when he asked the question, who are you looking for? They say Jesus of Nazareth. And he says I am he. And as Jesus said, I am he, they all drew back and fell to the ground. And once more he asked them who are you looking for? Jesus wasn't trying to escape the cross, but he was embracing it. He was fixated on finishing what he came to do. And then there's one of my favorite moments. One of my favorite moments happens after this, and I don't know why it's a favorite one, maybe it's just because it's so random.
Speaker 4:When they come to arrest Jesus, remember the mindset that Peter's probably in. He's just been told you are going to deny me three times. And so Peter is probably hanging on every moment, waiting for a moment to prove him wrong, to prove him right or to do the right thing. And so they come to arrest Jesus and it says that Peter drew his sword and slashed off the right ear of Malichus the high priest's slave, Of Malichus the high priest's slave, and I always wondered did he have bad aim? Did he miss? Did he duck? I would love to see the instant replay of this moment. Did one of the disciples kind of push his hand and go, no, no.
Speaker 4:But in the moment Peter was trying to do what he thought was best. So he swings the sword, nicks the guy's ear, it falls to the ground. And then Jesus I think about him doing this, just very peacefully, just looking at Peter going put the sword away, put that thing away. You have no idea what you're doing. Just put that thing away. We're not going to have a war, we're not going to have a fight right here. Put that thing away. And then he bends down, picks up that ear and puts it back on the guy. So in the moment Jesus is being arrested, in the moment he's being put into chains, he's still concerned about showing love and performing miracles he puts that guy's ear right back on. He was fixated on that moment.
Speaker 4:Even when Peter tried to fight, jesus said no, because the mission wasn't about having control, it was about trust, it was about having faith in the one who was holding the cup. So I want you to think about this as we pray this morning. Will you lay down your sword whether that's your fear, whether that's your pride, whether that's your desire to fix things and trust God's plan? That's what Jesus was asking Peter to do Put down the sword and trust God's plan. Let's pray.
Speaker 4:Father, we thank you so much for the unwavering love and focus of Jesus. We're thankful for his love that stooped so low to wash feet, for his obedience that stood firm in the garden and that his courage that he had as he walked forward in betrayal. God, I pray that you would help us to fix our eyes on what matters most, on people, on your will and the mission that you've given us. Father, help us in moments where we're tempted to draw our sword, to trust you and your plan, when there's a lot of distractions and a lot of noise in this world. Give us the clarity to trust in you. Father, we thank you so much for the way and the example of Jesus. Give us the courage to trust in your plan. It's in Jesus' name we pray, amen.
Speaker 1:Who else commands all the hosts of heaven?

Speaker 2:A thousand generations falling down in worship to sing the song of ages to the Lamb. And all who've gone before us and all who will believe will sing the song of ages to the Lamb. Your name is the highest, your name is the greatest. Your name stands above them all, all thrones and dominions, all powers and positions. Your name stands above them all. And the angels cry Holy. All creation cries Holy. You are lifted, high, holy, holy forever, holy, holy forever. If you've been forgiven and if you've been redeemed, sing the song of honor to the Lamb and if you walk in freedom and if you bear his name, sing the song forever to the Lamb.
