Redefining Self-Care; The Toxicity of Always Putting Others First

Most of us grow up hearing, “Put others first,” “Be selfless,” and “Always think of everyone else.” And don’t get me wrong, caring for others is beautiful. But here’s the thing — we’ve been taught to put ourselves last, to always prioritize others before our own needs.
But here's a truth I’ve realized: constantly neglecting yourself isn’t selfless; it’s harmful. It creates a cycle where we forget who we are, what we need, and quietly carry wounds that we don’t even realize are there. Generations before us have been carrying this trauma—feeling guilty for wanting self-care, for saying no, for just being human.
And you know what? It’s okay to put yourself first sometimes. It’s okay to say no. Your feelings, your mental health, your dreams—none of them are selfish. They’re essential.
So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or disconnected, remember this: you can care for others better when you also care for yourself. You don’t have to carry the world alone. Healing begins with acknowledging your own needs and giving yourself permission to prioritize YOU.
Let’s break this cycle together. Because you matter — more than you’ve been told, more than you’ve been taught. Your well-being isn’t selfish. It’s necessary.
