Spry Lee Scott (00:00)
Hello, and welcome to How Y 'all Healing, a series of conversations with healers, leaders, and organizations about their healing journey and the importance of health and wellness for black and brown people. We talk to guests about the work that they are doing to heal our communities and find out what's in their personal self -care package. I am your host, Spry Lee Scott, and this is How Y 'all Healing.

What's up everybody like the intro said I am your host Spry Lee Scott and this is How Y'all Healing the podcast so welcome welcome welcome I don't know if I'm gonna use those sound effects every week, but I like them for today they make sense. the applause is working for me right now, So welcome welcome to everybody and if you are

Coming here for the first time, let me introduce myself. And for those of you who already know me, please allow me to reintroduce myself. Like I said, my name is Spry Lee Scott, And am the co -founder of Medicine for Melanin, an organization committed to the healing of black and brown communities.

But as far as me, Spry Lee Scott, I am what one of my friends kind of dubbed me as a while back, as the original Joy Pusher.

I think I was called that because I've always been eager to share things that I love and things that make me feel good. And I want everybody to kind of indulge. And if it works for me, not saying that it has to work for everybody, but if it does work for me and it could possibly work for you, then I'ma tell you about it. And you take what resonates.

with you and what doesn't, you leave it to the side, right? And that is probably the basis of the podcast, How Y 'all Healing. So to give you a little bit of background on how y 'all healing and how it started. Back in 2020, everybody knows that year, right? You say 2020, everybody immediately knows what was going on in 2020.

just in case you forgot, the world was kind of shut down in this pandemic, right? And we were all inside. And I think as many people do, I used my social media, and I would just post things throughout the...

pandemic and some of the things that I was into at the time or maybe some of the things that I was just learning about. like yoga and meditation and just talking about different things. And that was before I would say everything was on lockdown. But of course y 'all know how social media really blew up. Everybody was home. They were paying attention to what was going on. so friends.

started reaching out to me and they were like, yo, like, what are you doing? Cause I don't want to get sick or how can I keep my sanity being home locked in my house with my children all day and trying to balance work and teaching them  side note, I have two children and I homeschool them, but you'll hear more about them throughout the podcast.

So they were just wondering what I was doing and I started sharing it with them and then eventually came up with this opportunity, this idea to create this conversation series called How Y 'all Healing that we hosted on Instagram. And I just talked to different people about their healing journeys. also prompted me to find out what they were doing to heal our community.

and how can we get this healing spread but it wasn't a conversation where I was trying to tell people what to do. But again, just exposing them to different ways of doing things.

and the question how y 'all healing essentially asks what's in your self -care package. And what I wanted to talk to these leaders and healers and organizations about is what is in your self -care package so people could start saying, okay, you know what, I might wanna do that. for instance, one of the things that I took up in 2020 was yoga. because the gyms were shut down,

and I like working out and I needed something to keep me kind of consistent at home. And so I was like, all right, let me go do some yoga. And I started taking classes, ended up becoming a certified yoga instructor as well as a certified meditation leader. But these were things that worked for me and granted,

Yoga don't work for everybody. I get that. Just like I don't like cycling. That's not my thing. I've tried it several times and I see people who thrive in it, but cycling is not for me. so with all of these different ways to heal or different healing modalities to add to our self care packages, I understand that

everything is not for everyone. So again, you have the opportunity to kind of like listen in and take what resonates with you and what doesn't, you leave it to the side and you move on. the other part of it is because some of this stuff is new for me, it gives me an opportunity to ask a lot of questions that y 'all might wanna ask. So I like asking the questions that...

everybody is thinking, but nobody wants to ask And I feel like it's important to do that because now you have an opportunity to kind of listen in and figure out if whatever it is that we are introducing works for you.

so that's how it started. And I've been saying that I wanted to do a podcast.

because people were asking, when is it coming back? When are you gonna do it again? I've learned so much from it. And it's something that I wanted to do for a while. I'm not gonna get into the excuses or the whys and why nots, but I do understand that everything happens when we are in alignment for those things to happen.

And this is the right time. This is the perfect time, the perfect opportunity. And we are here, so welcome and thank you all for joining me.

And how y 'all healing, ask the question, what's in your self -care package? And so what better way to start off this series or this podcast with me answering that question, right? So what are some of the things that are in my self -care package or how am I healing?

So I thought about that and there's so many things. There's rest and, Eating healthy, drinking water, minding my business, those things, But.

Three things right now that are in my self -care package the first one is boundaries. So I have learned and am learning to put up boundaries. and it doesn't come from a place of anger or resentment or anything like that.

It just comes from a place of me understanding what works for me and what doesn't work for me. And those things that don't work for me just don't have a place, right? And we grow. And so there are things sometimes that we used to deal with or put up with or however you wanna say it. And we realize as we move forward or as we grow or as we just shift.

into a different space that there are things that no longer work for us and no longer serve us. that's what I've recognized. And when I set up my boundaries, it's really about me, And one of the things that I've learned is I don't look at people and what you do or

how you do things or how you treat people or anything like that. What I really pay attention to is how I feel when I'm around you.

I'll let that set in for a second. So again, I look at how I feel when I'm around you. And if I don't feel right, and if it don't feel right in my heart, my spirit, my soul, whatever, then I'm like, all right, Spry, like, let's put up this wall. And I've learned over time that

that doesn't mean that there has to be this dramatic exit, And I'm a Leo, so I know about dramatic exits But it just means I just have to deal differently and I have to move differently. And it's okay for me not to be in certain spaces.

This is something that I again, that I've learned and I'm still learning. I could walk into a space and if the energy doesn't feel right, Spry, just go, just leave.

so we are able to walk into rooms now and like if something say leave, that's your intuition. Listen to your intuition. And I grew up in Brooklyn in the 80s, 90s where you would be at a party and something said leave.

and you leave, because you didn't want to be there later on when things got crazy. But that's a whole nother story. So that's my first part of my self -care package, or one of the first things is, again, boundaries, The second thing that I want to share that's a part of my self -care package is

Intentions, so setting intentions. And this is something that I've again been practicing a lot lately just making sure, or rather understanding what it is that I want out of life and setting those intentions and going after them. And sometimes when we set intentions, y 'all, we get to name.

how our life kind of plays out. We are the script writers of our lives and there are things that happen that...

appear to be not in our control, But we still get to control how we respond to these things. with setting my intentions, what I've learned is that so if I have my goal, my eyes set on one goal, I understand that.

Like I gotta stay focused no matter what. so if I say, I'm going from destination A to destination B. And there are a lot of things that can happen along the way, but the most important thing is to continue to go and move towards destination B. Because we can't get sidetracked.

And that's what setting your intentions are. Because for me at least, when I set my intentions, then I say, all right, no matter what happens, this goal is going to happen for me. And so I'm gonna do everything I can. And when I set my intentions, when I'm thrown off track, I know to get right back on track. And one of the ways I set my intentions is by waking up in the mornings and.

meditating and that leads me to my third thing that is a part of my self care package and that's meditating daily. And this is something, if you know me, y 'all know I don't play with that before I turn on my phones in the morning. I don't check text messages. My phone is on do not disturb. I don't take phone calls or anything like that.

until I meditate. And that helps me to kind of set the tone for, not kind of, it helps me to set the tone for my day. And again, it's about setting those intentions so that no matter what comes into play, I can kind of like go back to my default setting, which for me is joy, peace, and love.

My mantra is choose joy, lead with love, find your peace. And that's my intentions for the day. Everything I do, lead with love, choose joy because it is a choice, And it helps me to find the good in all things and then find your peace. And so no matter what,

In the midst of a storm, no matter what's happening around us, there is a place of peace for me. And as we go along and as y 'all join us on this journey, and as you hear me talk to the guest about their...

self -care packages, you'll hear me talk about some other things that I have in my self -care package, or you may hear about something that I'm doing at the moment, or that I just added to my self -care package. invite y 'all to be on this journey with me, and I appreciate y 'all, and I thank y 'all for being here.
