Days 5–6 Recap — Big Names Fall in the Desert

The drama continued to build at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells over Days 5 and 6 as the tournament delivered several major storylines, including surprising exits from a number of American stars.

The home crowd saw a difficult stretch on the men’s side with early losses from Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton, both of whom were hoping to make deep runs in front of the American fans. The surprises continued when former Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz was also eliminated, opening up another section of the draw and highlighting just how unpredictable the desert conditions can be.

Indian Wells is known for its slower hard courts and swirling winds, and those unique conditions once again played a role in producing unexpected results as the tournament began to take shape.

Despite the upsets, several top contenders remain firmly in the title race. Carlos Alcaraz continues to be one of the central figures in the men’s draw as he looks to extend his strong form in Tennis Paradise, while Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev are also positioning themselves for deep runs.

On the women’s side, the tournament saw an unfortunate moment when Coco Gauff was forced to retire from her match due to injury, cutting short her run and disappointing fans who were hoping to see the young American star go deep at Indian Wells.

Day 7 Look Ahead — A Blockbuster Matchup

Looking ahead to Day 7 at the BNP Paribas Open, the spotlight will be firmly on one of the most anticipated matchups of the tournament so far: Aryna Sabalenka taking on Naomi Osaka.

This clash brings together two of the most powerful players in the women’s game. Sabalenka enters as one of the tour’s most consistent contenders and a major title threat, while Osaka continues her return to top form and remains one of the sport’s biggest stars on the biggest stages.

With both players known for their aggressive baseline games and big serving, the matchup promises to be one of the most exciting battles of the tournament so far — and could have major implications for the women’s draw moving forward.

Elsewhere in the draw, fans will continue watching the progress of players like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic as the tournament edges closer to the Round of 16.

With the stakes rising and the field narrowing, Day 7 promises another compelling chapter in what has already been a dramatic edition of Indian Wells.

So go to the link in the description, check it out, and trust me, you will be pleasantly surprised. Alright, we're gonna get into it. There has been a lot of shambles going on at Indian Wells this week. I'm gonna start with Sunday, March 8th. Women's Singles Action, we had Arena Sabalanka, a quick run through 6461, Victoria Maboku, 6461, Amanda Adasamova, 6161, Naomi Osaka, 6163, 61. And the retirement of Kogo Golf as well, 622 Alex Ayala was. Unfortunately, Kogar was experiencing some strange on pain. If she's out for a period of time, obviously Miami follows directly after Indian Wells, so it really just depends. Unfortunately, on the men's side, we saw a lot of American casualties yesterday, uh, with Jaffa Second taking out Tommy Paul 6263. Um, of course, that was an all-American clash between him and Ben Sheldon. He took out Ben Shelton in three top sets in two hours and nine minutes. We also had Sasha Zorov take out Brandon Nakoshima as well, and Francis Tiafo take out Flavio Caboli, uh, which was obviously a repeat of the Acapulco final, and that was 6-1-6-2. Um, on the women's side again, we had Jasmine Palini take out Ayla Tomyanovic in three, Muskova take out Sristiya. We also had Arthur Fils take out Fusovic, uh, Talia Gibson take out Townsend. Uh in a surprise turn of events, Devidic Fukina took out Yakut Menzik and Oja Aliyasim uh in his all-Canadian clash up with fellow countryman D'Allo. Uh, he took him out as well. Um we also had quite a few interesting doubles matches around the grounds. Um, Valentin Vascherot and uh Renikesh taking out Lorna Teen and Daniel Medvedev. Um, of course, we also had a few on the women's side as well. Um, but that is pretty much the wrap-up for Sunday. Very interesting things there. We'll see what happens um with Ben Sheldon and Tommy Paul as we enter the next Masters 1000. See how strong uh how strong we go with that one. Um, let's take a look at Monday. Today we had uh Elena Rabakna take out Marta Kostiak 6464, Iga Swantec take out Sakari 6362. Um another upset, Mira Andreva getting taken out by Sinekova. A lot of controversy around Mira Andreva. Um apparently she said F you to the crowd. You guys can go and watch that on any form of social media, it is out there for you guys to watch. Um, and that was a round three loss for her. So we'll see what happens with her if there's any fines to follow or anything like that. Um, Madison Keys was also eliminated from the tournament um by cartel. Jessica Pagula making it through with a three-set win over Yelena Ostepenko. Uh, we also had uh Alinas Fidalina taking out uh the fellow American Ashlyn Kruger, 6'4, 6'2, Caroline Mashova taking out Rusie 6 Love 6'3, and Belinda Bensick taking out Alice Mirton 6263. Um, unfortunately, on the men's side, we did see an early exit uh from Taylor Fritz at the hand of his countryman Alex Michelson, 6'4, 7, 6. Daniel Medvedev taking out Sebastian Beyer's 646 love, Carlos Alcarez taking out Rindakesh after dropping the first set. Um, and Novak Djokovic taking out Alexander Kovasevic dropping the second set, winning the first and the third. Obviously, it's best of three here at Indian Wells, so doesn't really give the men too much of a chance to get back into it. If they've lost the first set, it's a bit of a tough, tough gander there. We also saw Cameron Nuri take out Alex Diminor. Hitchikata, the Australian qualifier, taking out Bublick in three, and Draypat taking out Serendulu to set up a fourth round clash with Novak Djokovic. Kasper Rude also taking out Valentin Vacharod as well. Um, also Riley Opelka and Yannick Sinna falling in the first round of the doubles. Um we also saw Oja Aliasim and Sebastian Corda uh making their way through the doubles as well over Satan Zwarev and Melo. Also on the board as well, uh Nakashima and Tiafo losing in the doubles. And we did have a win, I believe, from Djokovic and Sister Pass. Yeah, here we go. Djokovic, Sister Pass over Aurelo and Pavlic. Um, 6'3, 6'2. So that sets up a very, very interesting doubles uh as we move forward. And I think I'm gonna take a look now at the drawer for tomorrow. Let's take a look. Alright, so Tuesday, March 10th, Stadium 1. We have a clash up, only their second time that they have played each other. They last played each other at the US Open in 2018. Marina Sabalenka will take on Naomi Yasaka. First up on Stadium One, followed by um a clash between Francis Tiarfo and Sasha Zwarev. That'll be a really interesting one. Uh two very powerful and currently very powerful players. Make sure you keep a watch on that one. That match will be followed by Learned T and obviously he just took out Ben Shelton. Uh, he'll take on Devitch Fokina. Not before 6 pm, Jacques Von Secca, who, if you remember, took out Tommy Paul. He will take on the number two seed in Yannick Sinner. And then not before 8 pm. Uh on stadium one, Alex Ayala will take on Noscova. Um, if we go back up to Stadium 2, we have Arthur Fells taking on Oger Aliasim. That'll be an interesting one. Uh, Jasmine Paulini taking on the Australian qualifier in Talia Gibson. Uh, then we've got a very interesting round of 16 men's doubles. Rinda Cash and Bacharot taking on the wild cards in Sister Pass and Djokovic. Um, and then not before 6 pm on Stadium 2, Amanda Anasimova will take on Canadian Canadian, Canada's Victoria Maboko. That'll be an interesting one as well. And then up on that looks like that is pretty much it for tomorrow, other than several other doubles matches. That is a singles action. We have um Karen Hachinoff and Rublev taking on Osha Aliasim and Sebastian Corder in the doubles. Granolas and Zabellos also taking on Dumia and Rabul, along with Sinekova and Townsend taking on Perez and Shures. Um, and some mixed doubles action. You've got Maria Sakari and Stefano's sister pass taking on Daniela and Kashnikov, um, along with Blinda Bensik and Flavio Caboli taking on Ethan King and Yelena Ostepenko. Well, that pretty much gives us an interesting rundown. We are getting to some would say the tail end uh with round of 16, so heading into the next round. I'm gonna go with Sabalenka over Osaka, Oja Aliasim over Philz, Zwerov over Tiafo, and Devidach Wokina over Tian, um, and Paulini over Gibson, along with Sinna over Fonseca and Maboko over Anasimova. Let's see how that pans out. If you guys remember, um there is a lot to look forward to. There is a lot to look forward to in the tennis world coming up in the next couple of weeks. Um, of course, this is an ATP 1000 and a WTA 1000 for those of you who may not remember. Um, but it is tennis paradise. Anything is possible as we have seen by some of the results. Um, so we'll continue to keep you guys updated and give you guys an update episode tomorrow. Um, please make sure if you're around the grounds, enjoy it. There is so many fun activations, there is a lot of fun things on site, there is um quite a few fun collaborations, and make sure to check out the oak berry stand. Alright, guys, enjoy and we will talk to you in the next episode. Bye.
