This is the Wolf Financial Podcast. Here's your host, Rob Wolf.

Rob Wolf

Good day everyone. Rob Wolf here with the Wolf Financial Podcast Today, I pose a question to you why is retirement sometimes harder than when I'm working? You know, we all think about retirement as the pinnacle of our working years, where we get to the top of the mountain and now we see what we've accomplished, and now it's just smooth sailing going down the mountain from there. And for hopefully a lot of people, that's what the case is. But you know, when it comes to financial issues, sometimes when you get to the peak of the mountain, going down the mountain can also have quite a few challenges that maybe we weren't expecting as we were going up. So let's break this down here a little bit.

Rob Wolf

And why is retirement a little bit more challenging for people? Well, the first thing that we all need to be prepared for is when you retire, you have to redefine who you are. How many of us? When we're asked about who we are and tell our story to people, the first thing that we tell them is what we do. It's how we define ourselves. I'm a doctor, I'm a lawyer, I'm a financial advisor. Well, guess what, when you're retired, when somebody asks you, what do you do? What do you say? Well, I don't know. That's.

Rob Wolf

One of the biggest issues in retirement is redefining who you are. You know, for a lot of people especially when they come to people like me right, they already have built financial resources, they've already put away the money, they've already done a lot of the right things. They just need little tweaks along the way. The biggest challenge that many of these people have is this identity crisis that they have. Who am I? What? What we did that made us special? It's who we are that makes us special, and sometimes it takes a while, once you go into that transition, to really flesh out who we are as a person, what it is that is important to us. Where do we want to be spending those extra time when we were working? Now we have more time, what are we going to fill that time gap with? Okay, is it charitable? Is it volunteering? Is it more time with the family? What is it that's going to give you purpose? Because ultimately, we all need purpose when we get to get us out of bed, right?

Rob Wolf

So that transition is, and can be, very difficult for many people as they go into retirement, like I said before, for many of my clients that come to see me. It's not necessarily about the money. It's about how they define themselves, moving forward and what they do with their life. How many of you know of somebody that seems to have all the money in the world but yet they're working in their 70s? We even know some people are working in their 80s and they say why are they still working? Well, because their work is their purpose. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because some of us really do get a lot of enjoyment and pleasure and fulfillment out of what we do as a career. But for those of you that are looking to say you know what? I don't want to work in my job forever. I want that work optional lifestyle, because what I do doesn't fulfill me.

Rob Wolf

Then, when you do retire, we have to be thinking about how we transition and how do we transition well. So that is a really big issue for everyone that goes through retirement. I don't care how much activities you have planned out. You can only golf so much, you can only travel so much, you can only stand to have your grandkids over so much. Right, we love our family, we just don't love them 24 seven. So what are the things that you're going to do on a consistent basis to give you that fulfillment, to give you that purpose moving forward into life? That's a question that you need to be asking now, before you go into retirement. Knowing that there is going to be a transition, knowing that there is going to be a transition. We want to keep that transition as short as possible, because the last thing you can do is be running 100 miles an hour working, working, working, working, and then just stop, because then it's like is this all there is? Is this all that I have left to look forward to? We all need purpose.

Rob Wolf

Purpose comes from many things. These are part of the financial planning process that we talk with, with our clients. It's not always about the money. In fact, very rarely is it about the money. It's more about what are the things that drive you. What are the things that drive you? Well, family, work, optional lifestyle, those things that we are passionate about, those recreational things that we just can't get enough of, those are all the things that drive us to want to do the planning. Okay, money is just the how, it's just the tool that we use to make things happen, but it's not all about the money, and I think that's one of the misnomers that a lot of people have when they come in to talk to somebody like us that we're just going to be talking about nuts and bolts and radar returns and all the things that, for quite frankly, many people really get glassy eyed over.

Rob Wolf

It's really about what it is that drives you, what is important to you. You need to be sharing these things with your advisor, and if your advisor isn't asking you these questions, all they're trying to do is sell you the latest and greatest mutual fund or the best insurance product out there. You need to be asking the question is my advisor trying to understand who I am, what it is that makes me tick, what is important to me? Or are they just trying to sell me something? Because if you have the feeling that you're being sold something, then maybe that's not the advisor that is right for you. For you, when you come to Wolf Financial Advisory, it's about who you are, what is important to you. It's our process that we take people through Because, quite honestly, that is what drives me is to understand who my clients are.

Rob Wolf

Where does their passions lie? Where's their joy? I get a lot of fun talking about things other than financial. If I talked about financial things all day long, I would go crazy, because it's not the most exciting thing to talk about. What's exciting to talk about is the big birthday celebration that's coming up, the big family trip that you're having planned Okay the things that you're doing for your business and the new levels that you're getting in your career. Those are the exciting things. Again, money's got a place, but it isn't the thing to always be focused in on. What is your purpose? What is your plan? That's what's important to talk about when you get together with an advisor, because there's those things that matter and there's those things that we can control.

Rob Wolf

Trust me, folks, there's a lot of things out there that we can't control. We can't control the politics. Politics is going crazy right now. We can't control the market. We can't control inflation. We can't control interest rates, can't control the market. We can't control inflation. We can't control interest rates.

Rob Wolf

No-transcript. But what can we control? We could control the philosophy that we use. We could control our strategy and we could control our process that we choose to engage with to make sure that we're moving forward, moving forward.

Rob Wolf

There's going to be curveballs that come in from left field all the time there's going to be those critical financial events that are going to happen and take us by surprise.

Rob Wolf

Perhaps it's a premature death of a loved one that you never saw coming, or it's that college expense that's coming five years from now, or maybe it's an opportunity like a second home in a place that you've always dreamed about wintering in, or maybe it could be something as a milestone birthday that you want to celebrate with your family. Whatever those things are, those are the things that we need to be focused in on and, by having a philosophy, a planning strategy, a process, we can incorporate all those things that are important to you so that, regardless of what happens, we have a plan in place to make corrective course directions as necessary to get you towards your ultimate goal. And that's all we can ask for. The last thing we want to do is have to make a titanic adjustment because, as you know, that titanic didn't make the adjustment in time. So we want to be making small course corrections along the way, not real big ones.

Financial Advisor Relationship for Retirement

Rob Wolf

So, again, when it comes to retirement, for many people it's more about the transition, it's more about one's purpose, it's more about who I am, and that's going to take time and that's okay. We're all going to be going through it if you haven't gone through it already. If you have specific concerns about the money angle, I want to encourage you to reach out to a trusted financial advisor, to a person that will listen to you, a person that will get to know you and understand what is important to you, because if you can connect and have a relationship, then you got something that is really meaningful moving forward.
