Fascia Health P2: Fascia & Restless Legs~The Hidden Connection
What if the key to better health, deeper intuition, and feeling more connected is in our connective tissue?
Fascia is the body-wide connective tissue web, conducting fluid & energy throughout our bodies into the Universe, influencing circulation, nerve pathways, and even how sensations are felt!
If this resonates, share this episode with someone who struggles with restless legs. Let me know if you try this fascia health routine even for those w/o RLS.

Welcome to all the kind conscious souls out there that are listening that popped onto this podcast, conscious Choices for Wellness podcast that I started almost a year ago now, literally coming up to a year in a couple of weeks since I started this podcast. And I am here with you today wishing you all a happy September happy end of summer. I hope you've had a good one wherever you are. And September 1st today. Yeah. And what else is it? Today it is Labor Day. I wanted to continue my discussion that I started last week about Fascia Health. What fascia is its connection to the universe, the relationship with our fascia to our nervous system and R-L-S-R-L-S stands for restless leg syndrome. And this is a, I'm not going to call it a disease, but a syndrome, I think is a better word, although when I looked into it, it's now being called some kind of a disease as well. There's an imbalance and your body is not at ease, so it could be a disease. There is something happening within, and it is just very, very recently being looked into because more and more people have been complaining about this syndrome for years now, especially in the last decade. And currently as of the data from 2024, 10% of the worldwide population has reported symptoms of RLS. And I believe the symptoms are very unique and we will get into that. So this intrigued me when I was studying fascia and talking about it last week. I thought that there would be a correlation just because of what the fascia does in the body. And the more that I was speaking on it, I thought I'm going to see if there's any kind of correlation or any kind of information out there. And sure enough, I found some, so I wanted to do a part two on this. So if you ever feel like your body knows things before your mind, does that make sense? This is sometimes true unless our thoughts are leading the way to what our body is feeling. And that is very, very common too. What we're thinking is then what we're feeling the secret might be hiding within our fascia, AKA connective tissue. Remember now, and if you haven't listened to last week, you might want to do that. Our fascia is something that runs throughout our body. It's like its own system that's holding everything together. It's like this web that wraps around our muscles and our organs and our bones and our cells, and it's linking everything together within our body, underneath our skin. Of course, we want to pay attention to this, of course. We want to make sure that our fascia is healthy and what are we to do when we are getting signals or symptoms from our physical body telling us that something is off. This is the time to reflect on what is happening and why. And the why is going to be taking you to the root cause of the suffering or imbalance state. And that's something that mainstream medicine really doesn't focus on. And it's really sad. They don't go to the Y, they don't have enough time to go to the Y with you. The root cause is very, very important. The root cause could be going to where, which I just listened to a podcast and a doctor was speaking about the where is really important, not just the why, but the where is you're feeling, the discomfort, the disease, the inflammation, pain in your body, where is that happening and dealing with that. And that will stem into the root cause because the root cause is why we got this disease, this pain, discomfort in our body in the first place and then it ends up going to a certain part of the body. Maybe that's a certain of the part of the body that we were born with, more of a weakness there. Or maybe there was an injury that never healed properly. And so then later on there may be scar tissue. And that's a weak point in the body now where the pain and the discomfort will settle into. And even, I'm going off on my tangent here a little bit. If we end up getting any kind of infliction, like a virus, bacterial infection, even a parasite fungal infection, any of these type of things, they will tend to gravitate to parts of the body that are weaker that they can flourish in. Because a really healthy body that's intact and that has all the things that it needs and everything is flowing properly throughout our fascia and our cells are flowing and moving and active, those types of bodies are not going to get inflicted with disease as much or hardly ever. So what if the key to better health, deeper intuition and feeling more connected is in our connective tissue going into our connective tissue, our fascia, and seeing how that is working? Okay, fascia is the body wide connective tissue web conducting fluid and energy throughout our bodies out into the universe. So remember that fascia influences our circulation nerve pathways and even how sensations are felt. So RLS restless leg syndrome is a sensation. That's definitely how it's described. The topic of fascia related to restless leg syndrome is still emerging, but there are some compelling insights from integrative practices, real experiences, and a few case reports that have been published. So what is RLS according to this is more of a scientific, it's not very scientific, but it's more of a standard definition from the medical field. In a recent article in the NIH journal, AKA, the PubMed restless leg syndrome is a prevalent neurosensory disorder that impairs your quality of life and it's so impairing to quality of life because it's fucking with your sleep. It usually happens when you're tired. It happens when you're supposed to be going to sleep and it doesn't feel very good. And from what I can see, many are really struggling with this. It can be really severe. I have had more of a mild case of it, although there's times it's been a little worse than others and I've had partners in my life that I've slept in the same bed with that tell me. It's almost like keeping them awake a little bit. They say they don't mind it. I think you mind it a lot more if it's keeping yourself awake and it's happening to yourself. But it's like if you're laying there, I mean I've had it happen when I'm driving a car and that's really fucking hard. You're trying to press on the gas and your foot starts freaking out. It's not safe, right? It's kind of hard. I've had to switch feet and have my left leg press on the gas instead. If it's my right leg that's acting up and that's just if I'm tired. It usually happens when I'm tired. But I know there's other things related to it. And I don't want to get into a huge thing just about RLS today because I'm trying to focus on the fascia and just how it relates. But when you're going to sleep, if you're lying there, if you're somebody that doesn't know what this is or you're just wondering what the hell I'm talking about, and you're supposed to be relaxed and just dozing off to sleep and your body's supposed to be feeling relaxed, of course if you're in pain, it's going to be harder to fall asleep. So hopefully you're not feeling any pain or any discomfort. It's easier just to fall asleep pretty quickly when you're tired enough. Instead, what happens is when you're experiencing this syndrome is one of your legs, although it might happen to some people at the same time, both of their legs will start kind of twitching and it's like this electrical pulse is shooting out through the bottom of your foot and it makes it spontaneously move. So it's like you don't even have control over it. It just moves all of a sudden and it only lasts maybe 30 seconds. This is for me, I'm speaking about myself. And then after that it's done. And then about a minute later, maybe a minute and a half, if you're lucky, another one comes up. So then it's like you're trying to go to sleep. Okay, you got a minute, you're dozing off and then all of a sudden here comes again. And it's a pattern that repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly happens and then at some point everybody's different. It will gradually stop because it doesn't happen all night long. You wake up in the morning and it's still happening. So it's almost like when the body calms down enough is relaxed enough when it's in a deep sleep where your body does repair at that time too, and then it subsides and let me know if anybody out there is listening and like, no, it actually doesn't completely subside. If you know somebody where they wake up in the morning and they still have that happening, I think that's pretty rare. I'm pretty sure it's subsides when you're sleeping and you wake up and you're fine. And then it might come back again that night when you're really tired and you're trying to go to sleep or you're driving and trying to get home at 10 o'clock at night and you're tired. And I've had it start driving down the freeway and I'm tired and I'm like, oh no, that's no fun at all. And it's really no fun at all anyways. It's not like a painful sensation. It's just an aggravating, annoying sensation that just comes back like every minute, minute and a half happens again pretty quickly and then suicides comes back again. So how is fascia related to RLS? Well, tight fascia can compress our nerves or restrict blood flow. That makes perfect sense. Stress and trauma stored in our fascia can manifest as restless sensations and movement. Stretching vibrations can free up stuck fascia legs feel calmer cited case report done by a website that's focused on FSN therapy, which is a specialized acupuncture technique. I don't know if he was a physician, but I'll say that he was Dr. Fu. It stimulates subcutaneous areas where nearby trigger points and tighten muscles lie. So it stands for foos subcutaneous needle therapy and it's a type of acupuncture that has been cited to report many experience less symptoms with yoga Fascia rolling postural correction. A community member on health unlocked shared their personal fascia focused routine, which was a yin yoga including fascia rolling and massage reporting a reduction in nightly RLS symptoms. And if you experience this syndrome or know someone who does keep listening, as I try to break down more what is happening and how to get relief, okay, we're diving into this and so fascia tightness may compress our nerves or block blood flow creating RL slike sensations. For someone who feels this, you might get this right. It makes perfect sense to me. Like I stated in my last episode, I started experiencing restless leg in the evening during my last pregnancy forward. This was about 18 years ago. So consequently what was really unusual, I know about unusual, but just pretty fascinating is that the child that I was carrying this pregnancy, my youngest daughter who's age 17 now, she also experiences RLS to this day. And this is an effing mystery of sorts if you ask me. I mean, they say that the older you are, the more common it is. It's more common in women. But I have a daughter who's had it since maybe birth and it arose when I was pregnant with her over the last 18 years. I've dealt with this annoyance through compassion and self love. These days though my nightly sensations have diminished and mostly vanished. Thank you, God, thank you, thank you, thank you that it is getting better. I just think it takes time sometimes to work things out. I've done a lot of things to try to work on this. And also something that just came to me was wondering why with the coincidences with my daughter and her having it too and me starting to experience it during pregnancy, I dunno if I should say this, but I'm going to go ahead. Her dad was exposed to Roundup. That is the Monsanto chemical with glyphosate that is highly toxic to anyone, anyone and the earth. It's a completely toxic chemical that should be banned everywhere and it is banned in a lot of places, but not in our country. The US unfortunately not surprising, he was part of one of those large lawsuits where Monsanto was getting sued because it had been proved that some people were getting cancer from it and had died. And so they got sued for millions of dollars. It might've even been more than that in the billions, I don't know. But it was a very large amount and it didn't make them stop doing it, and it didn't take the product off the market though it's fricking nuts. But yeah, he was part of that class action lawsuit years ago because he also had exposure and he actually did get cancer. And I'm not sure if he ended up getting a settlement. He might've got a cut of it if he was able to prove that he had used it. But yeah, I think that's interesting that he was the father. She ended up having it and I got it when I was pregnant with her. So I wonder if it has to do with glyphosate because it seems like it could makes sense. But you know what? That's a whole nother discussion. So let's go into some things that can help practices like myofascial release, stretching, yoga. Of course, connective tissue therapies have helped some while. Holistic perspectives improving posture, fascia mobility and structural alignment also supports RLS relief. Personally, I've gotten great relief from paying attention to my magnesium levels and my exercise routine. I've also used cannabinoids. I've tried different cannabinoids and CBDI remember, I think CBD would be more helpful, CBN for the onset of it and helping any inflammation and going to sleep. And it did bring some relief. I did notice some definitely had used it quite a bit for that when I was having it pretty bad and did bring me relief. I would also give credit to consuming less sugar. That's including alcohol, meditation, yoga, breathing techniques, pranayamas and mindset recognition support. Since these are activities I've been incorporating more in the past few years, and like I said, I am experiencing less of it, obviously circulation plays a key role, which makes perfect sense. When our body is experiencing a tingly feeling of any kind, there is stuck energy. Restless leg is literally shock or wave of tingles rushing down the leg, usually one leg, but then it may switch to the other. I definitely have noticed that it will happen, say a 10 minute period and there'll be six episodes during that 10 minute period and then all of a sudden it'll switch to the other leg. I'm like, oh, now it's on this leg. And I was like, that's really fascinating too. It's like, okay, the energy's really trying to move, right? It's really trying to get out. It's like, okay, I tried this side, now I'm going to try this side. And then maybe it just gets released somehow. So let's go into more of a healing exploration together. Here are some things that you could really do and you could copy and paste this. Maybe I'll put this, well, if you go to my substack, you can copy and paste this into your notes and so you always have it. So a good self-practice would be trying gentle myofascial stretches, hip flexor releases, leg foam rolling, yoga poses like downward dog, and keep a conscious journal of your relief patterns. Also, not just downward dog, but I also want to add doing forward bends, doing half moon pose, an extended mountain pose, just really stretching your fascia in all ways. And extended child's pose. All of these would be stretching a lot in your arms, your sides, your legs, and your hips. Doing threading the needle pose, that's really going to open your hip flexors. Exploring somatic or body work therapies, consider professionals trained in myofascial release rolfing or visceral manipulation, especially if posture or fascial tightness is evident. So if you have the money, you can go and once a week, twice a week and have some professional help. It's definitely going to help you. And then track and compare. Note if relief comes from stretching, body alignment, dietary changes or fascia specific work, which may offer insight tailored to your own system. Did you sleep better or fall asleep quicker? Just take note, have a little journal and then you can tell what's working and what's not for you. And then discuss with others. Share these ideas with your healthcare provider or integrative therapists who can help blend these options safely with an existing plan. Spreading knowledge for deeper understanding, right? That's always, always good to do. That's what I'm doing right now. So what is the goal? Relaxing your fascia. Opening it up to improve blood and nerve flow and soothe hyperactive signals that feed restless leg syndrome. RLS. Okay, that's what we're trying to do. We're relaxing the fascia, we're opening it up to improve our blood and nerve flow, which then will soothe hyperactive signals that feed the RLS that are activating it, that are making this restless leg potentially happen. So when is the optimal time of an action plan that we're talking about here? Well, best before bedtime and when symptoms start to flare, we're talking about any of these kind of, but I mean I think anytime really. But before bedtime, it's always good to do a couple stretches, a couple opening up or massaging. You can do self massage too. If I did not mention that. I'm a big advocate. Definitely self massage. If you don't have money to go out once or twice a week, even just a daily massage or skin brushing or using your guha tool to activate the nerves and open your fascia and just bring lots of loving circulation to whatever part of the body you're feeling it needs. Do your whole body. I mean, you can give your whole body a nice loving massage and I love to use a gua tool or a body brush and just every day or twice a day, just take a couple minutes or five minutes and just do that on your arms and your legs and your back and wherever. And it is really, really, really helpful. And that's another thing I probably should have wrote in the blog. I'm definitely going to add that in here. Just receiving daily practice from any of these activities will help. Small nightly rituals will bring relief. And if this resonates, please share this episode with someone who struggles with restless legs and let me know if you try this Fascia Health routine, even for those without RLS, it will benefit you in many ways, I promise. And I'd love to hear your results. So I thank you for listening and next week we will talk about something else and I'm not sure what it's going to be yet that I'll probably know by Friday. And I'm going to be having a guest on I'm very excited about. I may have mentioned before a few weeks back, who is another entrepreneurial woman, a single mom of four just like myself. And she has a wonderful organic, sustainable women's clothing line that she's had for many, many years up in Oregon. And she has agreed to come onto the podcast and I think she might even have her own podcast. I think I saw something on her website, but I will be having her on in the next month or so. I'm not sure if it's going to be before I move or after I move. It might not be until October, but it's definitely going to happen this fall. And I hope that you all have a wonderful week and if you have any questions or anything, please do not hesitate to reach out. Also hope that you're staying safe out there. And I think I was going to mention at the beginning of this, and then I just kind of focused in on the topic, but I was so close to going out and marching today, but I have been not wanting to go by myself. I've been really wanting to go with someone else. I think many of us, when we go out to the streets, we want to feel like we're going with somebody we know because it's like a big scene and there's like thousands of people there. It's more than just going to a little party or something. And I have had a hard time trying to find somebody that will go with me and yeah, maybe one of these days I will just go by myself. But today's Labor Day in honor of workers and not corporations I have in my heart just so much love and appreciation for everybody that is out there in the streets and is standing up for justice. And I really am very grateful for anybody that's doing that right now. Okay, so much love to you and we'll see you next week. Peace and love. Bye.
