Speaker 2:Join us for an enlightening conversation as we sit down with a leading mental health expert to explore the transformative powers of trauma-focused life design coaching. Welcome back everyone. This is Garfield Bone, co-host slash producer, back in the studio with Demetria Nickens. Demetria, how are you doing today?
Speaker 3:Hey, hey, I'm doing well, I'm doing well.
Speaker 2:Listen. So what is trauma-focused life design coaching?
Speaker 3:So trauma-focused life design coaching is taking kind of two concepts and merging them together, so this idea of trauma recovery coaching and then this idea of life design coaching and kind of merging them. And so I guess I need to break that down, right, what do each of those mean? And so, when you think of trauma recovery coaching, trauma recovery coaching is identifying what it is that is really stopping you from moving forward. Like, what is it from your trauma that isn't an inner critic? Is it shame? Is it anger? Is it the situation itself, right? What is it from the trauma that keeps you from going in a positive direction in your life, right? What's got you stuck? And so, with trauma recovery coaching, those are the things that I do.
Speaker 3:So, with life design coaching, you think of most people, think of values, they think of your character, they think of purpose, right. They like to call it awakening meaningful change in your life when it comes to life design coaching, because that is all about being able to understand what it is you want to do with your life, right, where am I stuck? What is my mission? Right, thinking about all those things. And so when I discovered both of these entities, I knew that they would merge perfectly together, because trauma recovery is all about determining what's happening in your life from moving forward, and life design is all about moving yourself forward. So I literally have taken these two things and said, well, let's put them together, help people figure out them, the inner individual, so that they can get to this idea of their mission. And so I take them both and utilize both concepts in order to help people get to where they want to be in life.
Speaker 2:So I guess you're simplifying everything for everybody, you know, in terms of you know, I guess, looking towards application, as to how they can apply the intelligence, the smarts, the technique that you're giving them in a meaningful way, absolutely in a meaningful way. How do you integrate trauma-informed principles in goal setting and life design? How do you integrate those two?
Speaker 3:Oftentimes, people don't realize what is stopping them from moving forward. Right, oftentimes, people feel stuck in these cycles of their life, and so when you think about that, well, what is keeping you stuck? Oftentimes? Fear, right, this inability to move forward, because I'm scared, because I don't know what's ahead. Right. Well, a lot of times that fear comes from this inner critic thought in your head, right, this fear comes from shame that was developed, from situations that have happened to you. This fear comes from youth, right, things that may have happened in your youth that you still carry with you moving forward, right.
Speaker 3:And so oftentimes it's taking the principles from trauma such as shame, inner critic, limiting beliefs, things like that, and being able to say, okay, well, how do these things over here in your trauma stop you from getting to your goals in life? From you understanding what your mission in this life is for you, knowing what your niche is right, from you knowing what direction you want to take in your life, for you really even understanding what your values are in this life, right, oftentimes people think they know what their values are, but have never sat down and said, okay, I value these five things, right, but they really don't know what they think they know, but they have no idea because they've never really sat down and actually thought about it. And so I like to take people and say let's sit down and think about these things. Do you value family? Do you value service to others? Do you value responsibility? Do you value vacations? Do you value harmony? Right, what is it in your life that you value truly?
Speaker 3:And then what out of those things, how can you move forward in mission in your life based on the things that you value? Does it match what you currently do now? Does it not? Should it? So I ask people all of these questions and then a lot of the time in asking these questions, it gets to this trauma that happened in their life and why they don't do this because of this thing that happened over here, and so you have to address those things in order to move forward.
Speaker 2:Good stuff. My mother always says practice make perfect. Well, you have a wonderful rest of the day. We'll see you in the next episode.
Speaker 3:Thank you.
