Speaker 2:Values are like the GPS for our life's journey. Without them, you might end up in the middle of nowhere. Let's explore how these guiding principles shape your purpose. This is Garfield Bowen, co-host slash producer, back in the studio with Demetria Nickens. Demetria, how are you doing today?
Speaker 3:I'm doing well.
Speaker 2:So, demetria, how does values impact your purpose?
Speaker 3:Such a good question, right? So when we think about this idea of purpose, right? What is it that I want to do with my life? What am I quote unquote meant to do with my life? So many people ask this question and they have absolutely no idea where to go with it and it stops them because they feel like something else is supposed to tell them what their purpose is. They're supposed to define it. Something else is supposed to define what that purpose is for them, instead of them taking ownership. And what that is I like to think about.
Speaker 3:Purpose is how do you become the best you, and then in service to something else? Right, and something bigger than you, right? So I'm becoming the best me, so that I could be in service to something bigger than me. So if I think about purpose, I think about it that way. And I got this whole concept from an old instructor. He's retired now, his name is Bill Johnson and they call him the dream dean because he works in higher ed and this idea of purpose was everything. So he's done a lot of work in purpose. After studying under him.
Speaker 3:This idea made sense to me. It clicked right, this idea that how do you become the best you so that you can be in service to something better. So when you think about values and you attaching values to that, think about what you value. If you had to pick out of a list of I don't know, 50, 100 different values, could you define five values that matter to your life? Is that family, friends, religion, fun, harmony, exercise, health? What would those five things be? And if you can narrow it down from all the things that you could consider values in this life, you can narrow it down to the top five in your life. Then you can determine how they align with what you're doing.
Speaker 3:Now. Most people are working, most people have a job. They're doing something with their life. This idea of do those values that you define align with this idea of purpose for your life? Am I doing something that aligns with my value system? Am I doing something that aligns with who, the best person that I want to be?
Speaker 3:When you think about this idea of values and then putting it to this idea of purpose, then you really get a streamline into this idea of purpose. Not that it's coming from some other source, it's coming from you, from exactly what you have defined, because you know what your values are. You know what you care about. You know what's going to stop you from doing something versus let you do something. You know what things matter to you on the scale of priorities, right, if something is conflicting, what kind of decision are you going to make?
Speaker 3:That's based on your value system. That we often don't stop and take the time to think about, but it's so important that we want to do that so that we can really think about well, what is the purpose that we can get to that we really, really, really want to do and be in service to others at some point in our life. So it's really how they connect to each other, because it helps us align our purpose. If you figure out your values and then you determine what you're doing and your work doesn't really align with your values, you may want to start thinking about is this work what you really want to do? Because it's not aligning with your value system? So that's how I like to think about it.
Speaker 2:I know a lot of people, including myself, struggle because when you go through life and you can be in your 40s, 50s, 60s, you know what do I want to do? I'm like you should have figured it out by now. You know what?
Speaker 3:It's okay. There are people any age can really start to sit down and think about this. It doesn't matter what your age is, it doesn't matter what you do in this life, but you can sit and think about your values. I have a whole list of like values, things that you can consider values, maybe sitting down and really going through this list of values and deciding what your top five are going to be. Don't take a ton of time to do this, like maybe 10 minutes or 15 minutes, because if you take too long you'll second guess yourself. But go through the list and then just start picking them out Like what do you think, narrow it down and then narrow it down until you get to your top five. And then those top five things, think about them right and does it align with what you do now? It provides so much clarity for your purpose and what you really want to do.
Speaker 2:So if my values change over time, does that mean that my purpose is getting a makeover too?
Speaker 3:People don't think about it like that. We change as individuals over time. Right, that's just life, and so sometimes our values will change based on the things that happen to us, and so our purpose could possibly change depending on events of life that happen.
Speaker 2:So, yeah, it could, and I guess the extremes will be someone's life full of purpose and values that are, let's say, bench watching TV shows or avoiding vegetables.
Speaker 3:Purposes isn't there in your life, you feel like there isn't a service you want to do for others. Maybe that's something that needs to be looked at a little more, and that's how we get into the next conversation of how does this impact our mental health. When we're not thinking about our purpose, we're not thinking about service to other folks, we're not thinking about becoming our best selves, how does that impact your mental health overall? So, thinking about mental health in other ways, people always shy away from mental health. Okay, let's talk about it a different way. So sometimes getting to it through purpose is just another way to think about it.
Speaker 2:Yes, I guess value and purpose creates order, and order brings peace, which ultimately leads to prosperity.
Speaker 3:Hey, I like it. It makes sense I might have to use that one.
Speaker 2:Listen, love it. You have a wonderful rest of the day. We'll see you in the next episode.
Speaker 3:Sounds good, thanks.
