Local news doesn’t just report on a town, it helps a town recognize itself. We sit down with Amy from Moultrie News to talk about what a true community newspaper looks like today, why local journalism still matters in Mount Pleasant, and how readers and organizations can play a real role in shaping what gets covered.

Amy breaks down the day to day reality of serving a fast-growing area: balancing coverage from town council and schools to Boy Scouts, swim teams, nonprofits, and the small moments that make a place feel like home. We also talk through the practical side for local businesses and community groups, including how advertising works, what makes a press release useful, and why clear community tips help a newsroom follow leads that might otherwise get missed. If you’ve ever wondered how to get your event, initiative, or announcement on a local outlet’s radar, you’ll leave with a much better map.

Then we get into a topic that sparks instant nostalgia: print. Even after decades of change and the rise of e-paper and online news, Amy shares that there are still die-hard print readers, and Moultrie News is rolling out weekly home delivery in Charleston County for $52 a year. We wrap with the buzz of the Mount Pleasant Chamber Expo and why the Chamber of Commerce remains one of the best places to meet people, build trust, and help businesses grow.

Meet Amy And The Newsroom Beat

SPEAKER_02

Welcome to Building Custom Podcast. This is Mike Captain.

SPEAKER_01

I'm with Stephanie Farrow. Hi guys. And our special guest, Amy Satan with the Vulture News. I love the Voltron News.

SPEAKER_02

That was perfect, Amy.

SPEAKER_01

I love that. What is the Voltron? News is a media company. We are online and in print. We've been around for over 60 years. And our content covers Isle of Palm, Sullivan's Island, and Mount Pleasant. Everything from town council to the Boy Scouts to the swim teams and everything going on around town.

Why The Chamber Helps Businesses Grow

SPEAKER_02

Love it. Absolutely love it. Thank you for support with the chamber. We share headquarters with you guys, we share offices with you guys, so that's fantastic. What brings you to the chamber and what brings what makes this chamber so special?

Ads, Press Releases, And Story Tips

SPEAKER_01

What brings me to the chamber is very early in my career in college, I was an intern for the Chamber of Commerce in my hometown. Oh cool. So understand the benefits and how it can connect a business to the business community around. It's a great place to network, work on projects together, meet new people to the area and help businesses grow. In my position, I work with people both on the marketing side on how to advertise their business, in addition to working to get press releases. And those of you in the community are best eyes and ears on what's going on, so we welcome everybody in the community to send us their press releases to be under consideration to be published. Oh, cool.

SPEAKER_00

I work with a lot of nonprofits, and I always say that Multi News is a very big advocate for helping spread our message.

SPEAKER_01

We love our nonprofits.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, that's huge. Thank you for doing that. For sure. Yeah. I live in Mount Pleasant. I like to read about Mount Pleasant News, so thank you for having the Multi News.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_02

So, how can we support you as the Building Business Podcast? What kind of love can we do?

Weekly Print Delivery For $52

SPEAKER_01

So, some exciting news to share. Even though we've been around for 60 years, we're in an e-paper format and online, we still have a lot of die hard print readers. And coming in December, people are now going to be able to subscribe every week and get Multi News in their mailbox at home for only$52 a year if they're within Charleston County.$52 a year. So a dollar a week. So we will be promoting that in um our print and digital editions next week. So you can contact me if you're interested.

SPEAKER_02

I love that. That's amazing.

SPEAKER_00

I'll be sitting at home. I want to do my wordle. I'm gonna have a cup of coffee and then I'm gonna read the Multi News. Yes.

Deepening Community Connections

SPEAKER_01

I like it. And we're we're trying to connect more and more with the community. Um our editor, Ralph Mancini, and I have had meetings in the last year with all three mayors, with a couple school principals, with many nonprofits. Um the Rotary Club of Mount Plaza is just getting in.

SPEAKER_00

Two weeks ago, uh, when I spoke at the Rotary, yeah, he's a sweetheart.

SPEAKER_01

He is, he's a busy guy.

SPEAKER_00

Busy guy.

SPEAKER_01

But we depend on all of you. You know, there's a lot of tips or things, or if you just want us to look into something, sometimes I never know what phone calls we're getting. Um just let us know and we'll look into it. I love that.

The Energy Of The Expo Floor

SPEAKER_02

Well, we're here at the expo. Yeah, and can you feel the energy here?

SPEAKER_01

I was here last night setting up and a good part of the day today, and it's a lot of energy. Yes, it's seeing people we already know, it's meeting new people. We've met several people today that have not lived here very long. That's good. Just m learning, wanting to learn more about Mount Pleasant, what it has to offer, where to shop. So um, great time for those in the community just to come here or for a business to network with others.

SPEAKER_00

That's amazing. Again, I don't pay these people for saying we're big fans of Mount Pleasant, we're fans of the chamber, so she's sound bite after soundbite here.

SPEAKER_02

I know. You know what I mean?

unknown

I know.

Being A Chamber Ambassador

SPEAKER_02

Is there anything else on your heart that you'd like to share?

SPEAKER_01

Like no, we're thrilled to be here. Um, I love to talk to new members of the chamber. Sometimes I go on sales calls and I'm recruiting. There's a person with the booth right next to me that my sales rep and I were telling all about the chamber, so I'm thrilled that they've joined. And I've seen them here um at the expo today. So we also try to be an ambassador for the chamber, and just like anything else, you get out of it, what you put into it. And Rebecca and JD and her committees do an outstanding job.

SPEAKER_00

Aw, you're a blessing. I love your energy. Thank you for all of that. Thank you.

SPEAKER_02

Thanks for your time today.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you. Nice meeting you all.

SPEAKER_02

Thanks to our sponsors, Paul and Social, Mount Pleasant Chamber, Larry Montes.

SPEAKER_01

Larry Montes.

SPEAKER_02

Larry, what's up, buddy? Keeping busy at the uh at the Mount Chamber Expo. Yes. Uh we'll see you next time, folks.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you. Thank you all.
