Washington DC, Halloween and How we should vote!
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Ever wondered what it's like to see Washington, DC through the eyes of a first-time adult visitor? Picture perfect weather and surprisingly clean streets set the stage for our recent adventure with Robyn. Traversing eight miles a day, we marveled at the grandeur of the National Mall and got lost among the orchids at the Botanical Gardens. From the Capitol's quirky state statues to the awe-inspiring monuments and an abundance of Smithsonian museums, DC has a way of bringing history to life like never before.
The joys of seeing the White House up close, and the hilarity of quirky souvenirs. A special nod goes to Tennessee's missed opportunity for a statue of Dolly Parton at the Capitol. As adults, we're soaking in the rich history and realizing just how much those plaques have to say. DC has transformed from a city on a map to an unforgettable experience.
But it's not all landmarks and history. We detour into the world of voting and how we could make it both easier and more fun! Laugh with us about Election Day chaos, Halloween costumes that can withstand the rain, and community events that could rival scenes from "Christmas Vacation." Whether it's candy bribes at polling stations or the local library's Christmas tree lighting mishaps, there's plenty of humor and nostalgia to go around. Tune in for a journey filled with laughter, reflection, and a touch of holiday cheer.
Welcome to here. Real quick y'all with Marty and Amy.
Speaker 2Hey, hey, what's new?
Speaker 1It's October.
Speaker 2It's October, yeah, getting towards the end here.
Speaker 1Yeah, we had fall break.
Speaker 2Nice.
Speaker 1And then, oh, I went to a place with Robin. I've never been before.
Speaker 2Where is it? Oh yeah.
Speaker 1Washington DC.
Speaker 2Yes.
Speaker 1Appropriate. How was that? Uh, it was awesome.
Speaker 3It was like super, super clean, yeah the weather was bonkers the weather was like perfect oh, that's like 50 in the morning, like 70 75 in the afternoon yeah, because you walk a lot, did you do all the?
Speaker 1Oh, we walked. I think we walked eight miles a day. Nice Ish, but yeah, super clean. For some reason I don't know how I missed it I didn't go in the fifth or sixth grade, you know how everybody back in the day.
Speaker 2Yeah, everybody goes to DC. Sixth grade, maybe eighth grade, sometimes people go. But yeah, sixth grade's a big year.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's like fifth or sixth grade. They would all go, I guess, with a band or just to school.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1Which I told our boys that and they were like what? I had to sign two pieces of paper for them to go to the Nashville Zoo.
Speaker 2Yeah, I know People don't. I don't think people do that anymore.
Speaker 1Not the whole class, right? We saw a ton of students like buses.
Speaker 2Wow, okay.
Speaker 1Like just high school kids everywhere, I do not want to chaperone that. No, I was trying to think I'm going to butcher this. I forgot what we did day one. Okay, I guess the first day we walked, which we were like maybe three blocks-ish walked to the capitol.
Speaker 2Oh wow pictures, robin loves to take pictures, so we took a look and y'all have amazing pictures, by the way that's because she takes them.
Speaker 1And uh, we're taking all these pictures of the capitol. And then later that day we were like, oh, that was the back, oh, and that was the back, oh.
Speaker 2And that was impressive. Yeah, I know, the back was pretty cool. It's huge yeah.
Speaker 1And then we did Capitol, and then we went to the Botanical Gardens.
Speaker 2Nice. Which my husband would love that I said that multiple times. I was like when is Randall?
Speaker 1I was like he would love, and I guess we walked through the whole place like three times, okay, because you kind of get turned around a little bit. But they had one room that was like an orc I feel like I'm 80 um orchids it was all orchids in the room?
Speaker 1yeah, I was like look at these, they're all live yeah um, and the guy was trying to tell people how to take care of them. He's like so what'd you do? Yeah, on these you want to replant or all these tips, and I was trying to like listen, I didn't want to ask a question. Yeah, but I was just trying to listen to answers, I was like Robin, hold on, he's trying to tell us so we don't have to buy another one every two months. We rent orchids.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1You need yeah, you need to be in a rental program. Yeah, we just go to Costco and like 20 bucks and then it lives for two months and throw it in the garbage, but anyway. So he's telling all these people how to keep them alive. And then I was like, yeah, but you're in like a climate controlled greenhouse with like mist every 14 seconds.
Speaker 2Professional gardeners. I could tell people how to keep them alive in here. That's all somebody does, yeah you come to our house. Yeah right.
Speaker 1Go to that room with hardly zero sunlight, keep them alive. But yeah, that was cool. What else did we do day one? Oh, and then we walked to the front of the Capitol. It was more impressive than the back.
Speaker 3I'll say, if you go check out the front Day two.
Speaker 1I'll say if you go check out the front yeah, Day two. I think that was day one. That's all we did.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1But the Washington Monument.
Speaker 2Did you go up in it?
Speaker 1We did not.
Speaker 2What's up? Spider-man? Okay.
Speaker 1Yeah, we didn't go it's way taller than I expected it is.
Speaker 3I knew it was tall, but I was like okay, and I will say this about DC yeah.
Speaker 1I knew, like the whole, like the mall, yeah, Bicentennial. Mall. So you got the one end. You got Lincoln Memorial Washington. Monument and then the Capitol. I knew that was big.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1I did not know it was that big. Yeah, everything there scale-wise was way, way bigger than I anticipated.
Speaker 2Right, If you're like we're just going to walk down there real quick.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Well, it's going to take a little bit. It's going to take you five minutes, yeah.
Speaker 1It's going to take you 10 minutes to walk around the Capitol. Yeah, it is ginormous.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1But then you're like you're not going to be, like, oh, let's just jog down there to the Lincoln Memorial. No, you're going Uber.
Speaker 2Yeah, you might need a sandwich on the way there.
Speaker 1Does the Washington Monument have snacks? Yeah, but yeah, everything was very clean and impressive. Yeah, it was cool.
Speaker 2Did you go into the Smithsonian?
Speaker 1Which ones? First of all, I think they have 30.
Speaker 2Yeah, I don't know what is it Seven eight something like that. First of all, I think they have 30. Yeah, I don't know. What is it Seven? Eight something like that Natural history.
Speaker 1We went to that one. Yeah, we went to the Flight Aviation something. Night of the Museum one.
Speaker 3Yeah, yeah, it's cool right.
Speaker 1I thought it was just the Smithsonian.
Speaker 2Oh yeah.
Speaker 1No, there's different yeah.
Speaker 2They're all in the mall, right yeah.
Speaker 1It's a lot, but we did the whatever, the natural history one.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1I just wanted to see like the. I was like a seven-year-old, I just wanted to see the dinosaurs.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 2No, they're. All that stuff was legit yeah.
Speaker 1So one section has that, and then there was a section that had like ocean and that, and then there was a section had like ocean. And then the other one was just animals, like all stuffed lions, all that stuff, but the dinosaurs were cool. Yeah, but yes, I'm amazed how everything there is free. Everything we did was free, except for the spy museum. We did the spy museum yeah, we did that and one day we did spy museum and then, I think, we went to the Smithsonian of.
Speaker 1Natural History. And then we also did it's newer, I guess it's Smithsonian, but the Natural, oh, the Museum of African American History.
Speaker 2Yeah, that wasn't there.
Speaker 1It's like a super cool looking, the architecture is like crazy. Yeah, because it stands out.
Speaker 2you're like that's, that's new yeah but yeah, that was nuts wow, I think it was like four levels. Oh my gosh, I want to see that yeah, I want to go back.
Speaker 1That was, that was probably our, that was probably my favorite thing, that and mount vernon and took a day trip okay, yeah, we did that this was mount vernon liby was like 10 or something.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, did y'all like that?
Speaker 1mount vernon was cool yeah, yeah it was. Uh, I mean, I knew where it was yeah but then I was like, man, this is prime real estate right here. Yeah, uh, it was neat. I didn't know that. Maybe I didn't pay attention in school.
Speaker 2Oh, I didn't.
Speaker 1I mean, I knew George Washington. I knew he was dead, but I didn't know how he. I didn't remember how he passed away or whatever. But they're like, yeah, that's where he passed away in the bed. And you're like, oh, okay.
Speaker 2Okay, okay.
Speaker 1Yeah, but yeah, that's pretty impressive.
Speaker 2Yeah, they take you through. I remember going through all the.
Speaker 1Wait, did you go in fifth grade?
Speaker 2No, I went to that with Randall and Libby and John. Oh, because we did a trip to DC when she was 10.
Speaker 1Oh yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2And Ben was still pretty little.
Speaker 1Did they like DC at 10?
Speaker 2Or were they like no, they did, they liked it. We went to the Washington Monument.
Speaker 1Did you go up in it, like Spider-Man? We did not go up in it.
Speaker 2I don't think you could go up in it. For some reason, when we went, maybe they were working on something and then we did two or three of the Smithsonian's. I don't think we went to the Capitol. I want to say there was a reason we didn't go there too, but yeah, they liked it. But I'd like to go back now as an adult, just be old and read all the things I want to read and take my time and go to the Botanical Garden. Oh yeah, I'm sure we didn't go to that.
Speaker 1That was, yeah, that was cool, the only thing talking about reading everything.
Speaker 2the Spy Museum, I thought it was very kid-friendly, it is yeah, but that's the most information.
Speaker 1Here's my thing about DC. You could go to the Spy Museum, you could go to the Smithsonian and you could stay in there from open till close in any one of them, and you couldn't take all the information in. Yeah, you wouldn't have time to read everything.
Speaker 3No.
Speaker 1It's crazy the scale and you're like sometimes you feel like you're missing stuff, but you're like, we're going to eat supper at some point. We've got to keep moving.
Speaker 3Yeah, right, yeah.
Speaker 1But yeah, it's a lot.
Speaker 2It's a lot, it's a lot.
Speaker 1Yeah, we got a little turned around on the I guess it was the Spy Museum, because they give you like a little badge and you're supposed to like solve something and I bailed on mine.
Speaker 2Oh, okay.
Speaker 1And then I just told Robin, I was like we'll just do yours, and then we got like 50% done with our mission. Uh-huh, I was like we'll just do yours, and then we got like 50% done with our mission. You're kind of like Jason Bourne or whatever the dude's name in Mission Impossible. I don't watch those. But yeah, we got like 60% done.
Speaker 2I'm not waiting on that screen oh yeah, because it's clues and all that I think I remember that yes, oh, I remember that yeah okay, yeah, I just pulled this up because I wanted to see African American history. Yeah, that was cool, I think I remember that. Yes, oh, I remember that. Yeah, okay, yeah, I just pulled this up because I wanted to see African American History.
Speaker 1Cultural Museum. Yeah, that was cool.
Speaker 2African Art Museum.
Speaker 1What had all the that museum had? I mean, it covered everything. We kind of did it, I guess not backwards, but I guess the first. We just went to the top first because we saw people getting on the escalator.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1So where we went was all the like, kind of like cultural. It was like more like the TV show side, like the music side like entertainment value. Like they had, like little Richard's Bible and like just like random stuff and they had, like Chuck Berry's Cadillac, like just and then they had like a sport section. So it's like you know, they got michael jordan, yeah shoes and like all that stuff.
Speaker 1Excuse me, so I guess we did all that first and the part that kind of focused slavery, I guess was either the first. I think that was the first floor so I guess, we kind of went backwards through it. It doesn't matter. But yeah, that was like, yeah, it was a lot. Yeah, but it was, it was cool.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1It's a cool place. Man and it all those are free, yeah, every one of them's free, except for the Spy Museum, which is a little more.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1Yeah, little more, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a little more like something to go do, kind of it's more like david buster. Ish, yeah, right museum.
Speaker 2Yeah, it walks you through it kind of like a venture science center here, but like yeah well, if you're a big james bond fan, stuff like that that's cool, yeah, yeah but, yeah, man I was trying to think the other thing.
Speaker 1Oh the day we did mount vernon.
Speaker 2Well before I got there, Robin got to go tour the White House and check out the White.
Speaker 1House and everything. I didn't get to do that. Not jealous, it's fine, but yeah, the day we saw Mount Vernon we got back and then we toured the Capitol, we got to go inside. But, I didn't know this Travel advice If you're touring the Capitol, don't go on the weekend. Because if you go on the weekend, you don't get to see the chambers. You don't get to go in and see where they're doing their chambering, but that was a pretty cool tour which they told us. I guess the rotunda or whatever yeah.
Speaker 1They're like, yeah, this is where George Washington was supposed to be laid to rest, which was kind of cool because we just saw the tomb at Mount Vernon. Oh yeah at Mount Vernon. Yeah, but they were behind schedule. So they ran like 20 years over schedule, so the family got tired of waiting and they're like fine, we'll just bury him here at Mount Vernon.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1Which I of waiting and they're like fine, we're just burying him here in mount vernon yeah, which I'm kind of glad they did. Yeah, because anytime like not the not that touring the capital was like like you didn't take it in, it was not light-hearted at all but it was if there had been a body in there yeah, you'd be like, yeah, okay, yeah, you don't want to a little more somber.
Speaker 3yeah, you don't want to A little more somber.
Speaker 1Yeah, you don't want to talk. Everybody's going to be quiet. Yeah, yeah.
Exploring Washington DC's Landmarks
Speaker 2Wow, I forgot that. Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.
Speaker 1But the what was it, I guess? Oh, and the other thing in the Capitol, every state has two statues so like, and they can change them out whatever. So like you, you know, there's a Rosa Parks statue. I think that was they said that was Congress supplied that statue, so it was not a state one. But anyway, like so, tennessee has, I think, one of them's like Andrew Jackson or whatever. So we're waiting in line to get our tickets and I'm like, oh, johnny Cash. So there's a Johnny Cash statue.
Speaker 1I'm like sweet and then it says Arkansas and I was like oh man, he's from arkansas, I thought that was ours oh yeah, I was a little bummed out because I thought, yeah, I just assumed tennessee we get to what was our other one? Going blank. Um, it wasn't anybody real okay I thought it'd be somebody a little more. There should be a dolly one up in there.
Speaker 2I'm just saying there should be a Dolly one up in there. I'm just saying there should be, there should be. We know what it should be. Well, you can rotate them. Oh, I see, yeah, but yeah.
Speaker 1The fact there's not a Dolly statue in the Capitol is oversight by somebody.
Speaker 2That's weird yeah.
Speaker 1But yeah, I forgot, johnny Cash was Arkansas.
Speaker 2That's right.
Speaker 1But yeah, a lot of them are presidents and okay, you know whatever historical, historical figures yeah sacajawea?
Speaker 2I don't know yeah, it says right here andrew jackson and john severe like severe bill.
Speaker 1Oh, I severely missed that statue because I didn't see it.
Speaker 2yep, so he was the first governor of Tennessee. I didn't know that. Well, there you go, history lesson.
Speaker 1But yeah, DC's cool.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1I want to go back yeah. Which it was a little, I guess, the last night there we went to see the White House.
Speaker 3Mm-hmm.
Speaker 1But you can't get very close because, well, it's October, so the election's coming up, right. So the fence is kind of ginormous. Yeah, and it comes way out and then they're building like a. It looked like a little stage or something like kind of in front so you couldn't get close. They had like barricades and all that stuff, but it was still cool to see it. Yeah, robin's, like you can't get close, you still want to go see the white house I was like I'm in dc, I want to.
Speaker 2Yeah, you want to put your eyes on it? Yeah, I want to say I saw it, she was like sorry, we can't get closer.
Speaker 1I was like it's it's right there.
Speaker 2It's right there, I see it, I got it.
Speaker 1If I want to see it closer, I'll buy the lego set or a Lego set or a postcard. Yeah.
Speaker 2Much cheaper which.
Speaker 1I was surprised by that Souvenirs.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1They're still on that merch man Well, just like.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, it's like.
Speaker 1Yeah, do I need a dish towel that says the capital? Or like we went to Mount Vernon and I was like you can get.
Speaker 2You can take your whole house. I guess I need honey.
Speaker 1Yeah, I guess I need honey from Mount Vernon and then I was like I had, and then you're trying to get souvenirs. Oh, yeah, and then I'm like do they like blackberry preserves?
Speaker 2And you're like getting preserves and they're like.
Speaker 1Well, it's from Mount Vernon. And then I'm like I didn't see no blackberry bushes up in here. So then I started looking at it and it's like oh, it's packaged in Virginia or whatever I'm like this is just Joe Schmo. Blackberry Preserves. They didn't slap a label on it.
Speaker 2Just get a postcard.
Speaker 1Just give me a George Washington hat and keep it moving. Yeah, but the gift shop in Mount Vernon is large.
Speaker 3Which I didn't expect that.
Speaker 1And you get done like they got a cafeteria.
Speaker 2Oh yeah.
Speaker 1Guess I'm getting a turkey burger because I'm starving. We just had to walk around and look at oh yeah, yeah, I'm like, guess I'm getting a turkey burger because I'm starving.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, we just had to walk around and look at stuff.
Speaker 3It makes you hungry yeah.
Speaker 1Yeah, Because I was like I'm seeing everything.
Speaker 3Yeah right.
Speaker 1So then they have like a wharf. You got to walk down to the water, Of course then they had like a I ain't doing that but we walked all the way down there and then me and Robin found some trail. We're like nobody was going up these steps.
Speaker 2I was like why is everybody going that way?
Speaker 1I was like we just hopped a little chain link thing like let's go up the steps we go up the top and then like there's an old wooden fence, I'm like I guess we'll just hop the fence.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1But we found our way back.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1We took a shortcut, but yeah, it was cool.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1But it's, yeah, it's a lot of walking. Mm-hmm, DC's a lot of walking.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's fun, though it's educational. It's different as an adult.
Speaker 1Oh, I bet I wouldn't have paid attention. No, Well, obviously because I didn't even know how George Washington died.
Speaker 2Yeah, but it's the kind of stuff like now I used to be like why is that man reading that every plaque?
Speaker 1I take a picture of the plaques and read that bad boy later.
Speaker 2Yeah, but like some things that I'm super interested in. Oh yeah, I'm going to stand there like, yeah, super interested in, I'm going to stand there. Yeah, and then I want my dinner at five yeah.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Then I'm going to bed by 8.30.
Speaker 1Yeah, but they had the in his bedroom it was still the original desk, oh yeah. Now I'm going see, I didn't pay attention. Then he wrote something on it, I don't know, but yeah, a lot of this stuff was original to the house, I know I'm just like hearing who stayed there.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's kind of like a reenactment kind of no, we didn't see that okay but it was kind of um I'm trying to.
Speaker 1The only thing I can compare it to is graceland, just because, every room is very specific, like you go in there and like one room's all green.
Speaker 2Like, this color is the rage.
Speaker 1And then this color is like this room's kind of yellow, the bed's yellow.
Speaker 3Yeah, yeah, gray, they kind of themed out some rooms. Yeah, like them.
Speaker 1But yeah, I don't know, and then they, but I think the coolest part was the porch overlooking the river. That was the coolest part to me Not seeing like where stuff happened but, like that would have been his viewpoint.
Speaker 3Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1That's crazy, I know, man. But yeah, I guess our boys would enjoy it. I would. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Speaker 2I would yeah, yeah, they would enjoy, like, I think, your boys would enjoy it. Yeah, yeah, the Spy Museum.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 3This is where Spider-Man.
Speaker 2Air and Space is cool too. What?
Speaker 3is it? We didn't do?
Speaker 2that one the other yeah, you could do a week just doing Smithsonian stuff.
Speaker 1You can go to one a day. You're going to read everything. Yeah, take a burger and eat it first, the only thing I will say this about the Smithsonian of oh, and I just thought of one of my favorite parts, so the one of natural history. So we went into the dinosaur part first.
Speaker 3Right.
Speaker 1So you're seeing like T-Rex saber tooth tiger. That was my favorite growing up, so you see all that and you're seeing like t-rex saber-toothed tiger. That was my favorite growing up so you see all that you're like that's amazing
Speaker 1yeah then we went across to the stuffed part, like stuffed whatever I don't know stuffed animals yeah um, yeah, yeah, is that a deer head? Uh, I've seen this. Um, so we go over there and there's some that are cool yeah, it's like two lions on a wildebeest oh yeah oh man, that's impressive whatever yeah and then you turn the corner and it's like a squirrel like there's a bunch of those outside.
Speaker 1I just saw one, we saw one with no tail. Y'all got one of those, um, but yeah, there's like a. There was like a bobcat, like trying to catch a mockingbird, or something.
Speaker 2You're like that's happening in Tennessee, where I live right now. Come on now, yeah.
Speaker 1Y'all got to step this up. There was a little bit of that.
Speaker 2A street rat from New York. Yeah, that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1There's the possum that was in our backyard.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1It's impressive. Yeah, um, yeah. So I would have done that different.
Speaker 2I would have seen that first and I would have in a different order maybe yeah I'd say that t-rex for after the squirrel yeah, didn't go yeah, yeah, it's not gonna go up very much at that point you want to go back and see things that that we hit with our cars in our neighborhood has anybody ever seen the elusive white tail deer?
Speaker 1Yeah, I saw one on prom night with my hood in my car. But yeah, I would have redone that.
Speaker 2Yeah, okay, yeah, we did air and space. We did that one and we did maybe like the other one we did was.
Speaker 1I was going gonna say my one of my favorite, uh, silver lining, and not silver linings, but something that I did not expect. I guess it's because, like congressmen and whatever, like you know, the aid to these people are just like working yeah, constantly in these ginormous buildings and they probably don't have time to like. You can't walk outside in the mall and be like I'll just run over here to Arby's and grab me a roast beef.
Speaker 2There's nowhere to eat.
Speaker 1There's no restaurants right around there, so there's food trucks everywhere.
Speaker 2Oh see, that wasn't going on, I don't think when we were there.
Speaker 1I was like this is fantastic, there was, our boys would have lost it because there were some you know I see a food truck and there's a couple of pictures on it.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1The ones that have like ice cream and slushies and all that shave ice. There's like a thousand the whole menu's on there.
Speaker 2Oh, so you can just walk up and see.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's just ice cream and shake and there's one like every. There's an ice cream truck probably every 50 yards. It's crazy and you're like, guess we'll go to that one.
Speaker 2There's no line are they on the mall? Yeah, so they let them come up in there.
Speaker 1Well, I mean people park there but yeah, they park there kind of for the day. But then you walk by smithsonian and you go out and get some street tacos and like eat right there, like in the park.
Speaker 2If you had a food truck, that'd be the place you want to go.
Speaker 1Oh, yeah, there'd be people. Just go grab whatever you want slice of pizza, they just throw a blanket down. Go eat under a shade tree.
Speaker 2I was like dude that's the ticket, right there.
Speaker 1That's what I'm talking it's like a music festival no music I know with museums no crowd, it's a museum festival.
Speaker 2Oh, that's where we are in life. But, anyway, yeah, that's where.
Speaker 1I'm at. That's nice. No porta potties. Like you know what, I'll go in the Smithsonian and use the restroom. Yes, thank you.
Speaker 2That is where I am right now. Oh my goodness.
Speaker 1But yeah.
Speaker 2Wow DC.
Speaker 1Yeah, which I guess it's. I wanted to ask them like how busy? Because we Ubered a couple places you know Right. But I wanted to ask them, like how busy is it here, like inauguration or election day or whatever? Like I just wanted to know, know, like because it wasn't that crowded but I'm like how it's got to be bonkers oh, I can't imagine yeah, yeah you went three weeks before the right with three weeks before
Speaker 1election day yeah, by the way, I voted before I went I'm voting today yeah, it took me about 30 minutes.
Speaker 2Yeah, I'll say that.
Speaker 1Yeah, which, when I got there, the line was outside, uh-huh.
Speaker 3And I was like oh man.
Speaker 1It moves pretty fast. Yeah, it does. I'm like, do I?
Speaker 2need to go, get in the car.
Speaker 1No, and then I just waited it out but when I came out, it was probably I love like, like, justifying it.
Speaker 2When I came out, I was like mm-hmm, it's gonna be about an hour now. Yeah, what time did you go?
Pumpkin Carving and Holiday Decor
Speaker 1you said I came when I did. I think the best time to go is like one o'clock oh because people try to go on their lunch break, yeah, or? Like 1245, so they try to go before lunch or during but then they gotta get back to the office yeah. They're like I got to get back at 1 or 1.30. So if you go to the end of the lunch crowd.
Speaker 2Yeah, that makes sense.
Speaker 1Or maybe not. Maybe it's a horrible time to go.
Speaker 2I think it just depends. I mean, there's a ton of different places. You can go early vote. I guess, Where'd you go? What did y'all do?
Speaker 1Library. Aren't they all the library?
Speaker 2I think so Most early voting. Yeah, I think, maybe they are. I guess everybody goes to the library yeah, it's been pretty smooth, I guess. Yeah, I'm not doing that on Election Day.
Speaker 1No, I don't know who them people are. You know, how some people are like. I like to vote on Election Day.
Speaker 2It's open on Saturday, too, for early voting. The last day for early voting, though, does not matter because this is going to come out after, but um is halloween 31st so yeah which that's?
Speaker 1okay, if the last day, let's not make the last day to vote halloween I know I don't know, it seems a little crazy to me if somebody dressed up crazy coming to vote yeah, I guess you can wear what you want.
Speaker 2I guess so.
Speaker 1That actually sounds kind of fun. You know what I should have gone as, like Marty McFly, like Back to the Future.
Speaker 3Yes, there you go, you want me to tell you who wins. No, I'm just kidding.
Speaker 1But yeah, that's who. Oh, that's who Braxton is going to be for Halloween.
Speaker 2I am so proud to be his aunt. It's from number two. Because it's the first one From number two.
Speaker 1Back to the Future 2. It's the worst movie but it's the easiest costume. What does he dress like in Back to the Future 2? He wears that goofy like futuristic jacket, oh, and that like psychedelic little hat.
Speaker 2Psychedelic hat. Yeah, I never even saw the whole second one.
Speaker 1And.
Speaker 2I did not see the third one.
Speaker 1Well, the first one we're branching off from DC, yeah, but the first one. He wears like a puffy red jacket.
Speaker 2I don't know. I was like I got a puffy red jacket, yeah, and then she had to take the fur off the hood. Yeah, and then like Braxton came in there. He's like Jacket with the fur.
Speaker 3Yeah it's not the same thing. It's more of a life preserver.
Speaker 2Remember the guy was like what are you in the cold, Scott? Yeah, Whatever, yeah.
Speaker 1But anyway. But yeah, I don't get people. Sorry, but I like to vote on election man. I guess that's like.
Speaker 3I only like to see Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, yeah.
Speaker 2Well, it's gonna be a little, it might be a line.
Speaker 1It might be a line and it might.
Speaker 2Places might be closed yeah, he's at the mall for like a month man. Yeah right, go sooner if you want to get the list in. Yeah, he's got a lit. He ain't gonna forget. Yeah, he's santa yeah whatever yeah, we'll get into that in december, but um oh, no, soon as. Halloween's over. Yeah Well, halloween's basically over. If you go to stores now, if they have anything, it's like 50% off or they're like which Christmas tree do you want to look at?
Speaker 1Yeah, oh, home Depot.
Speaker 2They've been having Christmas yeah.
Speaker 1They keep Halloween up for about 72 hours, maybe about a week and a half.
Speaker 2And I'm going to say this, and they're like I just want a tree.
Speaker 1I can just change colors, just ding Purple and orange Halloween tree.
Speaker 2Ding. I have a tree for all occasions, stays up all year.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2So do you know what I saw somebody do?
Speaker 1Fortuna, lapper tree. What?
Speaker 2They put a sheet over the tree with some eyes. Halloween I'm like.
Speaker 1so okay, I want to say when I was little I'd have this dream, but this is one of my dreams If I had a lot of money a lot of money. I would have a really nice section of my house where you just keep it locked.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1And then, when Christmas rolls around, you just unlock the double doors, open them up. There's your tree and your big fireplace and everything's hanging up and it's just decorated year round and you don't touch anything.
Speaker 2Go in the Christmas room. It'll be Christmas again.
Speaker 1Yeah, okay, yeah that would be, that'd be amazing man, that would be nice. Or just to have, you know, put the tree up.
Speaker 2It's up up every day a storage unit with it, like that no, I want it in my house, you just you just want that, what's in there christmas what's in there? What's in that room? Santa claus and a tree everything's in there stockings we slide them a meal under the door, um, but I went to home depot and I was like you know what? I'm a horrible decorator.
Speaker 3Obviously y'all like.
Speaker 2Yeah, what are you talking about? Decorate for Christmas Outside in my house or at my house? I don't put anything up for Halloween anymore because I'm just I guess I'm lazy, but whatever Ben was like, can we please put something up in our yard? I go and it's all like zombie, like it's too dark. Do you want to scare the heck out of the preschoolers on the street and I'm gonna have to say no yeah, do you want the kids to come ask for candy, crying or smiling?
Speaker 2yeah, and I'm like I don't want to do the inflatable see, no, I ain't doing no inflatable because the wind hits and it's just yeah, flopping over.
Speaker 1No, it's woodstock at Flopping over Right.
Speaker 2It's Woodstock at the Thanksgiving parade all over again. There he goes. Oh wow, they're going to have to get some extra balloon holders. Oh, he's really taking off. So I got nothing.
Speaker 1Yeah, I'm going to get a pumpkin today.
Speaker 2That's it. I got nothing.
Speaker 1Yeah, okay. Well, it's too late, because Halloween's already happened when you listen to this, but we're going to try this. You can try it next Halloween, folks. So you take the pumpkin. You know how you cut the top off, right? Yeah, take a really big bowl, flip the pumpkin upside down, cut the bottom, cut the hole in the bottom right, scrape it all out. Use a dry erase marker to like map out your what you're going to carve, okay, because if you mess up, you just wipe it off with like a wet paper towel.
Speaker 1So they were like, yeah, just use dry erase marker, carve it out. That way, when you set the pumpkin back, you know how sometimes the top gets funky and it kind of like looks all nasty.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 2Then it just looks like you you don't cut the top, cut the bottom.
Speaker 1Cut the bottom out.
Speaker 2Interesting. I was like that sounds.
Speaker 1I mean, nobody puts a real candle in it anymore. You don't have to let it like.
Speaker 2Oh. I guess not.
Speaker 1But you know what I'm saying? Yeah, it looks better.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1It's not like some, because we jack up the top. Sometimes it's like oh, the top fell down.
Speaker 2See, I don't carve them anymore. It's what?
Speaker 3do you?
Speaker 1do, just stick it out there. Yeah, that's just like ammo, there you go. Y'all break this one.
Speaker 2We haven't had that happen yet.
Speaker 1And then, finally, it's like Well, if it's Well, if you carve one, cut out the bottom. That's a good. I think that'll we're going to try it.
Speaker 2Yeah, do you carve them on Halloween?
Speaker 1No on Halloween. No, usually we carve it in time for it to mold and regress. Yeah, yeah, we'll probably carve them. I was going to say this weekend. I think that's going to be too late.
Speaker 2Halloween's in three days.
Speaker 1I guess we're going to carve it today or tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow I can't do it today. I need some energy to carve a pumpkin.
Speaker 2You're going to need to to eat some nerds.
Speaker 1Well, I'm already eating Halloween candy.
Speaker 2Yeah well, get all jacked up on sugar and then jack-o'-lantern. So yeah, you know, do the thing we did. We used to carve them like every kid carved their own. One time Libby did a cat with like a stencil.
Speaker 1I'm all about a drill bit. Give me a drill bit and drill a bunch of holes in there and then just pop some little fake spiders in. You're like boom.
Speaker 2Oh man, I got to go to the store. Yeah, yeah, this year I've been the least.
Speaker 1Halloween-y.
Speaker 2Yeah, I got three days. Yeah, you got time, I'm going to pop something out there, it'll be fine, nobody cares, just have candy. I'm just going to have candy, get candy, get candy, get candy. I always think of the Seinfeld thing. Who's giving out candy? Everyone, we know, is giving out candy. What do I do? What do I say? What do I do? I can wear that. You know, I remember that.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Oh my gosh, I had the Wonder Woman with the mask and the swishy swashy you know.
Speaker 1Oh, yeah, everybody had that.
Speaker 2And then the thing broke on your mask?
Speaker 1oh yeah, he talks about that, and then you just walk around.
Speaker 2It's digging into your skin, under your eye that little thing is like it's not even closed. You're, it's just a step up it's a garbage bag it's a step up from my contractor bag and it's got. Yeah, it had one tie in the back by the neck right.
Speaker 1Yeah, who are you? I'm superman.
Speaker 2If you wore a garbage bag in a hospital gown at the same time, superman stamped on the front of it.
Speaker 1Yeah, basically I love jim gaffigan's thing where he says yeah, I love how you know halloween, you get to dress as your favorite superhero, go bang on your neighbor's door and demand candy. He's like if I do that now, they call the cops.
Speaker 2It's like that's yeah, you got a point. Yeah, it's a good one our boys are old enough.
Speaker 1I think they're going to a kind of separate neighborhood yeah we normally me and Robin, normally go all out, we dress up.
Speaker 2I know, yeah, we do a lasso or we go for it.
Speaker 1I couldn't think of anything this year. This year I'm going as tired and I'm just going to answer the door. Yeah, I love it, I'm going to be that one, I'm just going to be like happy Halloween, yeah, I can't. I don't have the energy to dress up this year.
Speaker 2I like giving candy out. Most of our kids are little kids.
Speaker 1I like giving it out. Yeah.
Speaker 2I mean sometimes we still have big kids, which I'm all if a kid wants a trick or treat you can trick or treat, I don't care, if you're 30, I'll give you candy yeah, right, yeah, but um, but yeah, we have like sweet little yeah, the little kids are the best.
Speaker 1I will say a good one we used to go all out, I think our old neighborhood which I I bought a, you know the little bottles of water the like four, six ounces get a bunch of those and throw them in a cooler because all those kids go trick-or-treat yeah, like for hours and all they're getting is candy sugar. Yeah, they need some water and like, so sometimes we'd be like there you go and we just give them little bottles of water and they'd be like and the parents are like.
Speaker 2Thank you, that is a good that's a good idea.
Speaker 1Yeah, do it next year, because this is coming out too late, right, but whatever.
Speaker 2Yeah, hot tips.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 2They're going to be cold, but you can bring it back out. Yep, no. But, anyway, yeah, I like it. So, Got to go get candy, yeah and vote.
Speaker 1Yeah, take Halloween candy with you, that way, if there's a wait, you can make money, or you could be everybody's best friend.
Speaker 2Be like, you don't have to tell me who you're voting for. I give you a box of Nerds, you. Let me come in front.
Speaker 3Like high school or middle school again.
Speaker 1Right, oh, my goodness, you want some fun dip. Let me move up a little bit. Yeah, oh, my gosh, yeah you could, I would totally be bought off by candy.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, or if somebody happened to have a can of Coke.
Speaker 1If you had a cold Coke and a thing of Fun Dip and you said, hey, can I move up?
Speaker 2Somebody almost take your detention for you, or something. I'm just kidding, but yeah.
Speaker 1I'm getting a sticker either way. It's endless, buddy.
Speaker 2I know Right, we all get a sticker, yeah.
Speaker 1How is that the payoff? Not that you should get paid.
Speaker 2No yeah. I'm like it's a sticker, I don't know. I mean, bank gives a lollipop. No, you know what I'm saying yeah, it's close to Halloween.
Speaker 1Why don't you just put a big bowl of candy out and stickers?
Speaker 2Take one.
Speaker 1Yeah, you, you should get something besides that sticker. You got to up this a little bit.
Speaker 2Up it. Yeah, people taking off work, taking time, have like a grab bag.
Speaker 1That's what they ought to do. Yeah, just you get a sticker and it's got a little number on it, and then you just have to log in and see if you won, like the prize.
Speaker 2Who's making all them grab bags?
Speaker 1What.
Speaker 2Who's making up all that stuff?
Speaker 1Probably the 90-year-old women that are handing you a piece of paper.
Speaker 2Janice, if you could go the next time you're at Walmart if you could get some cake.
Speaker 1God bless them people, because I ain't doing it Sorry, yeah, yeah, but those people the poll workers.
Speaker 2Man Shout out oh, wee yeah.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And they're patient. They're like they don't get worked up. Do you get the coffee stirrer?
Speaker 1Huh.
Speaker 2To hit the screen with. You know how you hit the screen. Now to vote.
Speaker 1No, they just said get COVID. No, I use my finger.
Speaker 2Sometimes people say use the coffee stirrer.
Speaker 1Coffee stirrer.
Speaker 2Where'd you get a coffee stirrer? They gave it to us last time we didn't get that we used it as a button pusher or whatever, yeah. Or you can get that we used it as a button pusher, or whatever, yeah.
Speaker 1A button pusher or whatever.
Speaker 3Check the box.
Speaker 1If you go to vote, I guarantee there's a lady named Mildred who volunteers.
Speaker 2Yeah, she's still there.
Speaker 1How come there was that old volunteer?
Speaker 2I don't know but maybe it's a generational thing.
Speaker 1Oh, we're going to have to do that.
Speaker 2Yeah, Doggone it you better go get some candy and some paper bags. You're gonna have to figure it scam my retina.
Speaker 1Get this on an iphone man, we go that still baffles me to this day.
Speaker 2I'm like wait a minute, we gotta go to the library.
Speaker 1Yeah, you can take sorry, I'm just gonna get into it get into it real quick, it's fine, hey, real quick. Uh, no, okay, so I can get on my phone and I can transfer all the money I don't have to wherever I don't have other money.

Speaker 2Yeah, Like you can do whatever you want. Apply to a college Money all this stuff. Send other people money. Yeah.

Speaker 2You don't have to have your voter registration card.
Speaker 1I'll say this I didn't think I was going to say this, but I think you want to talk about IDs and your driver's license and all that yeah. To renew or whatever. I don't even care if you click anything on the screen. I think to renew your license you should have to vote, or to get your. You know what I'm saying. If you're 23 and your license coming up for renewal.
Speaker 2Some people don't want to vote, though Some people say it's my right not to vote.
Speaker 1Well then, just go. Don't click nothing, but at least go through the process. I see what you're saying. You know what I'm saying. Yeah.
