Reading books is one of the best things you can possibly do with your time. But the thing is, knowledge is not power. Knowledge put into action is power. If you just burn through books, you’re not going to remember them or get much out of them. You’re just killing time.

I read books in a certain way that allows me to put what I learn into action. I’m going to share three ways in this episode that will help you do the same thing.

The first method I use is called the lightburst. I’ll read through the book, highlight things, and if something stands out that I really need to implement, I’ll pull that highlight out and put in in my notes for the year. I have a document with the most important passages from books that I need to implement, and I read through it every morning.

Secondly, I’ll read the book in a book club. That social interaction around the book will help me ingrain the information into my brain. Being in a club also makes you take notes and discuss them.

Finally, I like to teach the book to other people. When you teach something, you have to break it down into its most simple form; you’ll be forced to understand the principles at their most basic level. When you understand the fundamentals of something is when you truly understand it.
