Can the FBI Trust Rex Heuermann? Prosecutor Who Took on Serial Killers Explains Sentencing
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Josh Ritter is joined by Matt Murphy, former Orange County, California homicide prosecutor and author of The Book of Murder, to break down what to expect ahead of Long Island Serial Killer Rex Heuermann's sentencing, set for Wednesday, June 17.
During his 17-year tenure as a homicide prosecutor, Matt Murphy specialized in high-profile serial killer cases, cold cases, and complex “no-body” murders. Tonight, Josh and Matt discuss what to expect at the Rex Heuermann sentencing, and what justice can still require when a defendant is already expected to spend the rest of his life in prison.
As part of Heuermann’s plea, he agreed to cooperate with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit as part of an academic and scientific exercise. But can the FBI trust Rex Heuermann? Josh and Matt break down whether investigators can learn from Heuermann, how prosecutors guard against manipulation, and whether this gives him one more chance to control the story in the LISK case.
Plus, viewers will vote in tonight’s Viewers' Choice poll to decide which case Josh covers next:
Larry Millete Trial — Trial is underway for the California father accused of murdering his missing wife, Maya Millete, in a no-body case that prosecutors say centers on the collapse of their marriage.
George Pino Trial — The Florida boating crash trial continues for George Pino, accused in the crash that killed 17-year-old Luciana “Lucy” Fernandez.
Palisades Fire Trial — Jonathan Rinderknecht is on trial in federal court after prosecutors accused him of intentionally starting the fire that later became the deadly Palisades Fire, while the defense argues fireworks may have caused the initial blaze.
