.680000 43.760000 how can I look back and say,
.760000 45.760000 "Okay, I'm proud of the way I did that?"
.760000 49.320000 - Is God trustworthy?

.600000 85.800000 when you pray prayers asking God
.800000 88.000000 to direct your conversation,
.000000 89.560000 gets pretty interesting.

.520000 115.320000 - Well, hello there, Jessica and Marybeth.
.320000 116.320000 - Good morning.
.320000 117.240000 - Hello.
.240000 119.360000 - Sometimes when we have guests on,
.360000 122.440000 I greet them first and Marybeth feels left out.
.440000 125.520000 So I specifically feel so thrilled for you today.
.520000 127.040000 - Yes.
.040000 130.640000 - We do have a very special friend with us today.
.640000 131.280000 - We do.
.280000 135.480000 - There was a list in the beginning of who we thought
.480000 137.360000 we would like to interview on our podcast
.360000 139.960000 and your name was on that short list.
.960000 142.480000 - Jessica Zubrod, come on down.
.480000 144.320000 - Woo-hoo.
.320000 146.200000 - Well, thank you for inviting me.
.200000 147.120000 - You're welcome.
.120000 148.480000 - Thank you for accepting the invitation.
.480000 149.320000 - Yeah.
.320000 150.600000 - We're showing up.
.600000 153.800000 I did give her a latte before the interview.
.800000 154.640000 So.
.640000 155.680000 - They lovely latte.
.680000 160.320000 - I am not above bribing people to be on the show
.320000 161.600000 and caffeinating them.
.600000 162.440000 - And caffeinating them.
.440000 163.440000 - Yeah, caffeinating them.
.440000 165.480000 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
.480000 168.600000 - Well, I was singing for introducing her.
.600000 171.200000 We should just tell how we know her.
.200000 173.560000 Okay, shockingly.
.560000 175.120000 We go to church with her.
.120000 177.960000 - Is that true of all of our guests so far?
.960000 179.040000 - Yes, yes it is.
.040000 180.280000 - Yes, yes it is.
.280000 181.720000 - We have great people to talk to at our church.
.720000 182.760000 - We do.
.760000 184.800000 - I think the first time I really got to know you
.800000 187.280000 was that summer Bible book study
.280000 189.440000 that we did through mobs.
.440000 192.600000 That was, I don't know, two or three summers ago maybe?
.600000 193.440000 - Maybe.
.440000 196.840000 - So she has been a great mentor mom
.840000 198.840000 to those with young children.
.840000 201.960000 And then through church, our paths just keep overlapping
.960000 203.440000 in fun ways with her children
.440000 207.160000 and my husband and my children and her children and yeah.
.160000 210.160000 - Actually in beautiful ways of intergenerational mixing
.160000 211.480000 and I just love that about that.
.480000 212.920000 They brought me a lot of joy and I loved it.
.920000 214.720000 One day I was sitting in church and realized,
.720000 217.560000 oh my word, how many neat intergenerational connections
.560000 219.520000 we had, even as families, just the way
.520000 222.520000 that I was getting to work with you through mobs
.520000 225.440000 and then that your husband was working with my son
.440000 228.320000 in youth group and then my other son was with your son
.320000 229.920000 in young child care at church.
.920000 231.600000 And I just thought that was just such a great way
.600000 233.560000 to see the beauty of how the body works.
.560000 239.120000 - Well, I did not get to know you personally
.120000 241.440000 until more recently.
.440000 242.280000 - Yeah.
.280000 246.240000 - And just this last year, I heard about you.
.240000 248.040000 And no, in good ways.
.040000 252.160000 And I'm gonna see if I can articulate this well.
.160000 255.800000 A lot of people that I had relationships with already
.800000 258.600000 that were friends of mine that I respected deeply
.600000 260.200000 were friends of yours.
.200000 263.400000 And they would mention you in passing and conversation.
.400000 266.680000 And of course I heard about your husband
.680000 269.280000 because he's involved in church as well.
.280000 272.320000 And I also helped out in the youth group.
.320000 276.560000 So I met your kids and I was like, wow,
.560000 280.000000 she sounds pretty awesome.
.000000 282.040000 And then you met me.
.040000 285.080000 No, no, no, no, I hadn't quite met you yet.
.080000 288.040000 And I was like, wow, she seems like she's really
.040000 290.120000 got her stuff together.
.120000 295.120000 I don't know if somebody like that would want to be my friend.
.120000 298.560000 You know how sometimes we feel like intimidated?
.560000 300.000000 - Intimidated, yes, thank you.
.000000 301.720000 Intimidated.
.720000 303.000000 Thank you, Marybeth.
.000000 303.840000 - And then we get to know.
.840000 304.880000 - This is why I have her as a co-host
.880000 306.960000 'cause she gives me words when my brain
.960000 308.440000 doesn't form them fast enough.
.440000 309.280000 No, I did.
.280000 312.240000 I felt a little intimidated and then I met you.
.240000 313.960000 So super excited.
.960000 316.440000 And we even went out to breakfast once.
.440000 318.200000 There's the two of us, oh my goodness.
.200000 320.920000 But then you met me and you realized that we all have
.920000 323.240000 our things and we all have our areas of brokenness
.240000 324.080000 and all of that.
.080000 324.920000 - And now you know how?
.920000 325.920000 - Now you know how wonderful.
.920000 329.760000 - Well, and how much connection you and I have
.760000 333.680000 in weird ways that we're very similar.
.680000 336.320000 We have a lot of similar interests.
.320000 338.560000 We think the same about it.
.560000 340.760000 It's just, it's just very interesting to me.
.760000 345.760000 So it's truly a joy to have you here today.
.760000 348.560000 - You wear a lot of different hats
.560000 349.800000 and a lot of different things in your life,
.800000 352.520000 but what's the elevator pitch for who you are?
.520000 354.960000 - Well, I have thought a fair amount about it
.960000 356.880000 'cause you know oftentimes you go to an event
.880000 358.840000 or something and you hear that what do you do
.840000 361.320000 and then to think how would I define myself?
.320000 363.160000 I've had a funny conversation with my kids
.160000 365.200000 'cause I've said before, okay guys,
.200000 367.120000 what's the answer to that question?
.120000 369.200000 And I've gotten some funny ones.
.200000 372.040000 One I really appreciated from my son was,
.040000 376.680000 "Mom, I think you're an interior designer of people and places."
.680000 380.000000 And I was like, "Why, well, thank you so much."
.000000 381.480000 Knowing I have a love of design
.480000 384.840000 and he sweetly was acknowledging some contribution
.840000 386.320000 to his development as a person.
.320000 388.240000 And I was like, "Wow, thank you so much."
.240000 391.480000 That was certainly, I don't know, 17 or 18 year old version of him.
.480000 393.640000 Another, I think it was my husband who said,
.640000 394.760000 "You're a pollinator."
.760000 396.320000 I was like, "You just are like a bee.
.320000 399.200000 You go around and you're constantly pollinating things."
.200000 401.280000 I thought, "Okay, I'll take that one too."
.280000 404.920000 But it's oftentimes a little hard for me to define.
.920000 408.800000 But I just really enjoy being with people.
.800000 410.720000 Mentoring is something I really enjoy
.720000 412.240000 and I've had a lot of experience in.
.240000 414.560000 But just coming alongside of people and my kids,
.560000 415.960000 or you know, and then what they're involved in,
.960000 420.000000 I love being a part of our community and serving in that.
.000000 421.160000 And in our church community.
.160000 424.320000 And so it's a little hard to define,
.320000 426.600000 but I could jump around as a pollinator today.
.600000 428.400000 Yeah, I love that.
.400000 431.280000 Well, I will interject here.
.280000 436.120000 You have been instrumental in leading and organizing
.120000 440.440000 our mother's a preschool ministry for years in our church.
.440000 444.280000 You are a Bible study leader.
.280000 448.680000 You have worked with our special needs ministry
.680000 452.880000 and our night to shine initiative for quite some time.
.880000 456.000000 You are an artist.
.000000 460.920000 You work with lots of the young families in our church.
.920000 463.200000 I'm guessing maybe it's the Mops connection,
.200000 465.840000 but I know you've stayed connected in
.840000 468.200000 with these different families through difficult times
.200000 471.920000 and their lives and coming alongside them in many ways.
.920000 474.040000 And I don't know the whole story,
.040000 478.720000 but I also know that you are working on a new initiative
.720000 483.000000 to provide a wrap around care for our foster families
.000000 484.160000 in the church.
.160000 485.000000 Yeah.
.000000 489.400000 So there's a little more to this story.
.400000 493.480000 Sometimes it is nice to hear other people say things
.480000 495.960000 about ourselves because your description of yourself
.960000 500.880000 is very humble, which is not surprising once you know just.
.880000 502.080000 Yeah, exactly.
.080000 504.320000 And I would also add, even outside the church,
.320000 506.040000 I mean, really your whole family, but especially you
.040000 508.440000 and your husband are very engaged in a local community
.440000 509.560000 and a lot of different ways too.
.560000 510.520000 Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that.
.520000 513.520000 Yeah, very plugged in with Good Old Kennett Square.
.520000 514.440000 It's a great place to be.
.440000 516.200000 Love it and I, yeah, when you love something,
.200000 518.320000 it's just as easy to become a part of it.
.320000 521.960000 And I've often thought whether in ministry or in life
.960000 525.000000 and town that is just when you are in the right place
.000000 527.560000 and serving in the right ways, it often doesn't feel like work.
.560000 529.800000 You know, I think I get to do this.
.800000 532.080000 And so I'm thankful that I feel like I have a lot of opportunities
.080000 533.280000 where I do feel that phrase.
.280000 534.240000 I get to do this.
.240000 536.280000 That's a real pleasure.
.280000 536.880000 Yeah.
.880000 542.160000 A pollinator who decorates interiors both of places
.160000 544.800000 and people, I like that because it speaks
.800000 549.600000 to your role in discipling people.
.600000 553.080000 It speaks to your eye for beauty.
.080000 556.120000 And it speaks to the way that you cultivate relationships
.120000 557.560000 with people.
.560000 562.720000 And also the pollinator reminds me a little bit of a connector,
.720000 565.800000 which is one of my strengths, finder things.
.800000 569.280000 And when you pollinate, you go from place to place
.280000 574.480000 and flower to flower and you bring the pollen from one place
.480000 575.440000 to a different place.
.440000 578.880000 So you're, it could also be like planting seeds
.880000 583.000000 or just bringing the resources you have
.000000 585.000000 into different situations to help them grow.
.000000 586.800000 So I really love that.
.800000 588.280000 I think that's apt.
.280000 591.680000 Your family did a good job working on it.
.680000 595.720000 Well, and the fact that your son was able to think about that
.720000 600.720000 and articulate it speaks to a lot of your relationship
.720000 603.920000 and, you know, how you and your husband have raised him.
.920000 605.400000 So all good things.
.400000 606.720000 I'm impressed.
.720000 614.520000 Hey, Marybeth, I was thinking that it would be really nice
.520000 616.440000 to hear from our listeners.
.440000 617.920000 I would love that.
.920000 621.480000 What do you think the best way for them to contact us is?

.000000 641.920000 Talk to you later.
.920000 651.000000 This is going to be airing just after Mother's Day.
.000000 653.400000 And you're a mom.
.400000 654.720000 You've already mentioned that.
.720000 656.840000 Yeah.
.840000 661.280000 As you think about that particular vocation
.280000 666.520000 of being a mother and considering the span
.520000 669.320000 of your children's lives when they were littles
.320000 672.920000 up to, I think, you've got college age.
.920000 673.840000 Last year, high school?
.840000 674.680000 Not quite.
.680000 677.240000 OK, so high school, college age--
.240000 678.520000 And graduate.
.520000 680.960000 By the time this airs, we'll have a college graduate.
.960000 681.840000 That's amazing.
.840000 684.880000 And a married college graduate.
.880000 687.560000 A married college graduate.
.560000 690.920000 So as you think about the span of your children's lives,
.920000 694.160000 how has your approach to this vocation of motherhood
.160000 697.120000 changed over the years?
.120000 699.400000 Yeah, it has changed dramatically.
.400000 702.080000 I mean, in those early years, it's just so different.
.080000 704.080000 It's all about meeting needs.
.080000 707.160000 And there are just so many foundational things
.160000 708.200000 that are going on.
.200000 710.600000 And I oftentimes would get a little discouraged
.600000 712.360000 in those early years thinking, are they
.360000 713.560000 even going to remember this?
.560000 714.600000 And no, they're not.
.600000 715.480000 They won't remember it.
.480000 718.280000 But then I would remind myself, everything you're doing
.280000 720.720000 is just building a block in the foundation
.720000 722.520000 of this relationship that you have with them
.520000 724.080000 that will be for the rest of your life.
.080000 726.880000 And so as I would maybe try to be more creative or do
.880000 728.720000 certain activities with them, or kind of be
.720000 730.520000 a little proud of myself of something I did with them.
.520000 732.280000 And I thought, they're not even going to remember this,
.280000 733.800000 which is also why I take a lot of pictures.
.800000 736.080000 I feel like, no, I really did do that with you.
.080000 738.280000 But it really was so much of meeting
.280000 741.040000 need and just developing trust with kids
.040000 742.720000 that they knew I was going to be there,
.720000 744.640000 that they could depend on me.
.640000 747.560000 And obviously, that involved so much in patience and guiding.
.560000 749.640000 And all of those things in the young years.
.640000 752.240000 And then I think, as they've aged,
.240000 756.240000 that turned into trying to take the hands off a little bit more
.240000 757.520000 and to allow more freedom.
.520000 759.880000 My children would probably say, I'm not as good at that,
.880000 761.960000 as they wouldn't maybe recognize that effort
.960000 765.360000 as much as it was in me to try to do that.
.360000 768.280000 But just watching them start to develop their own gifts,
.280000 770.520000 I think that was something I really love seeing
.520000 771.800000 in the middle school thing.
.800000 776.160000 It's like, how can I, as a mom, just provide opportunity
.160000 778.680000 and help them to flourish in their own gifting?
.680000 781.160000 And I'm more of a pushover than I wish I were.
.160000 784.040000 But here's my one example of not being a pushover,
.040000 787.080000 was seeing a musical gift in my older son.
.080000 789.800000 And actually, all of our children are very musical.
.800000 793.320000 And I don't really know where the gift totally comes from.
.320000 795.040000 It's just people look at us and say,
.040000 796.920000 I'm like, it's just them.
.920000 800.520000 But my middle guy, at one point, he said, I don't know,
.520000 802.760000 I think I just, can I quit guitar?
.760000 804.040000 And I said, no.
.040000 806.200000 And I just said, no, you really need to continue.
.200000 808.560000 And that's one of the things that I really
.560000 810.080000 did just keep a foot down at.
.080000 814.400000 Same child is in Nashville studying music, business,
.400000 815.200000 and theology.
.200000 817.000000 And he really pursued that.
.000000 818.120000 And it was his gift.
.120000 819.760000 But I do think that was one of my roles
.760000 822.200000 was just trying to figure out how to fan that
.200000 824.440000 and to see it when they're young and then to help encourage
.440000 827.680000 and put them in the right places to allow that to flourish.
.680000 830.600000 And so I think I just really got a lot of joy out of seeing
.600000 834.080000 that as the way I could help provide those opportunities
.080000 835.720000 in those maybe middle school years.
.720000 838.360000 And then in high school, I just, I think
.360000 841.600000 that really changed to trying to walk a lot more,
.600000 843.280000 just shoulder to shoulder, and encouraging
.280000 845.520000 them in what was happening in their day to day lives,
.520000 848.440000 which is hard stuff, relationally in school
.440000 849.560000 and just different stresses.
.560000 853.760000 And so I do think that my role has dramatically changed.
.760000 857.320000 And now I just really, really thoroughly enjoy friendship
.320000 858.160000 with them.
.160000 860.800000 I love that every once in a while there may still be a call
.800000 862.920000 that actually is looking for a piece of advice, which
.920000 865.360000 is kind of nice to feel like I can still offer that.
.360000 868.920000 But yet, just to see them becoming true, independent,
.920000 871.000000 young adults, they really, they might not even
.000000 872.360000 need me for a lot of those things,
.360000 874.280000 but that they are willing and wanting
.280000 875.160000 to include me in them.
.160000 876.920000 And I just appreciate that so much.
.920000 878.960000 And I have so much gratitude for their willingness
.960000 882.360000 to continue to allow me into their lives and into day
.360000 884.920000 to day stuff, even if it's not hard, but it's fun.
.920000 887.480000 And just letting me know what's going on in their daily lives
.480000 889.000000 is such a pleasure.
.000000 891.560000 That was going to be one thing I asked you about is,
.560000 894.760000 you're a couple years away from empty nest.
.760000 896.440000 And that'll be about 18 months.
.440000 898.200000 Yeah, you can be a little less.
.200000 901.000000 No, a little bit, because at first I was worried
.000000 901.920000 and now I'm less worried.
.920000 903.800000 But I do think a lot about that date.
.800000 906.720000 So yes, we're not that far from an empty nest.
.720000 910.480000 How is your outlook or experience as a mom shifting
.480000 913.360000 or changing, are you doing anything to enter
.360000 914.720000 this next season of motherhood?
.720000 916.320000 What has that been looking like for you?
.320000 919.080000 Well, I can tell you, I think it started last spring.
.080000 921.200000 Our daughter was preparing to get married.
.200000 923.680000 And I would say our household was dripping
.680000 924.880000 with sentimentality.
.880000 928.920000 It was, we have a photo will come up in the corner of my phone.
.920000 931.440000 And it will be a two year old version of my daughter.
.440000 933.680000 And we'd send it out in our family chat.
.680000 936.000000 And I realized my husband and I were doing this constantly.
.000000 938.920000 And our kids were probably like, OK, enough in the pictures.
.920000 940.440000 And I said, well, at least you know you're loved.
.440000 943.200000 But we would just, we would send out these pictures.
.200000 944.640000 And we were just thinking a lot.
.640000 947.360000 Because I do think having our first child get married,
.360000 951.160000 there was just this sense of loss as much as there
.160000 952.000000 was a lot of gain.
.000000 953.440000 There was definitely this wow.
.440000 956.280000 She is really moving on and she is leaving our family
.280000 957.480000 and she's starting a new one.
.480000 959.560000 And so I would say that sentimentality
.560000 963.840000 was very, very present last spring through this year
.840000 966.000000 and seeing her often married.
.000000 968.760000 And then nearing this empty nesting,
.760000 969.920000 I think about it a lot.
.920000 972.080000 And one phrase that came to my mind
.080000 974.840000 is relates to my interactions with young moms
.840000 977.440000 because I'm still in friendship and relationship
.440000 980.680000 with some of our mothers of preschoolers.
.680000 982.680000 So I was talking to a friend and she said,
.680000 985.240000 ah, I just had my first last.
.240000 988.240000 Their last child was a coming home
.240000 991.200000 from the hospital outfit kind of thing.
.200000 992.800000 And she was just talking to me about that.
.800000 995.320000 And I said, it's so fun to be in this relationship with you
.320000 998.560000 because you are experiencing a different end of the spectrum
.560000 999.400000 than I am.
.400000 1004.400000 And I just had my first lasts with my youngest child.
.400000 1008.520000 So I had my first last event and kind of entering
.520000 1009.440000 into a senior year.
.440000 1012.680000 And I am realizing that now I am counting these experiences
.680000 1015.280000 that this is our last one of these experiences.
.280000 1019.320000 So I was having a first last and she was having a last first.
.320000 1021.760000 And I just said, there is also something beautiful
.760000 1023.800000 in that having friendship with people
.800000 1026.920000 at different stages of life because it really just helped us
.920000 1028.680000 to see that whole spectrum of motherhood
.680000 1030.960000 and she is just at this birth stage
.960000 1032.760000 and I'm at this launching stage.
.760000 1036.120000 And then we can share that in friendship is really beautiful.
.120000 1038.360000 - Yeah, I totally understand what you're saying.
.360000 1042.920000 I had the pleasure and heartwarming experience
.920000 1045.360000 of seeing one of Mary Beth's sons
.360000 1049.680000 where a pair of my sons pajamas to pajama day at church.
.680000 1052.400000 - Well, it made me so happy.
.400000 1054.800000 I mean, that little boy was thrilled to have the pajamas
.800000 1056.360000 and he probably liked where they came from.
.360000 1061.160000 But for me to see it was just like oh.
.160000 1064.440000 - It just does something to you because I guess
.440000 1066.840000 having that connection as you're saying
.840000 1069.160000 with this mom who's in this stage
.160000 1071.840000 just still bringing children home from the hospital,
.840000 1075.080000 it reminds us of when we were there.
.080000 1077.920000 But I think we're far enough removed
.920000 1080.600000 where we can really get that bird's eye view
.600000 1085.240000 of that hindsight of wow, what a beautiful time that was
.240000 1086.920000 and still celebrate with her.
.920000 1089.080000 But then sort of hold that at the same time.
.080000 1093.600000 It's like oh my gosh, my little guy is gonna be a senior
.600000 1096.440000 and going off to college and oh my goodness.
.440000 1098.400000 How can it be?
.400000 1100.280000 Do you think God does that with us?
.280000 1102.600000 That he sees the beginning?
.600000 1104.960000 I mean, because he knows about us.
.960000 1107.200000 He knew us before we were born, right?
.200000 1111.720000 He's there with us when we were formed in the secret place.
.720000 1113.400000 And he's there with us at the end.
.400000 1117.720000 And I think he sees all of time what a beautiful picture
.720000 1122.240000 of God holding our beginning and then our graduations.
.240000 1123.080000 So to speak.
.080000 1124.600000 - And how he lets us participate in that.
.600000 1127.320000 I remember like the feeling of taking the oldest to college
.320000 1129.880000 was heart-wrenching.
.880000 1132.560000 Like that was so hard to do.
.560000 1134.520000 And I remember just picturing in my mind.
.520000 1136.880000 I felt like as a mom of littles,
.880000 1139.200000 I felt like I was holding a nest in my hand
.200000 1140.920000 and she was this little baby bird in it.
.920000 1143.400000 And now like was she was going to college?
.400000 1145.160000 It was just like handing it off.
.160000 1146.920000 And it was like that she was just ready to fly
.920000 1149.760000 and kept having this image of handing off this nest.
.760000 1153.240000 But just being so grateful to see her spread her wings
.240000 1155.160000 and fly because she she's ready.
.160000 1156.640000 And God has gifted her a lot.
.640000 1159.520000 And I was just very, very excited to see how that would happen.
.520000 1161.920000 But that didn't mean that it wasn't incredibly hard
.920000 1164.320000 to see her go.
.320000 1165.160000 - As you can tell.
.160000 1166.000000 - It's okay.
.000000 1166.840000 It's okay.
.840000 1167.840000 We're allowed to be emotional.
.840000 1168.840000 - That's right.
.840000 1171.800000 - Well, and not to reveal anything about anyone here.
.800000 1175.800000 But we are not that different in age.
.800000 1177.720000 But I think you probably had kids
.720000 1180.160000 like maybe a decade before I did in my lifespan.
.160000 1184.440000 You have a lot of good years left to do things.
.440000 1185.640000 - I sure hope.
.640000 1189.040000 - And I'll still be raising kids for another decade.
.040000 1190.800000 You've got a lot of good years left.
.800000 1195.120000 - But I mean like how have you been thinking about
.120000 1198.200000 what that might look like as you enter this next phase?
.200000 1200.520000 - We do think about that a fair amount.
.520000 1203.680000 No we did, we got married when we were 21 and 22
.680000 1206.080000 and had known each other through childhood
.080000 1208.360000 and dated through the end of high school in college.
.360000 1210.360000 So we were just, had the pleasure of meeting
.360000 1211.640000 at a really young age.
.640000 1214.000000 Therefore got married young and had our children young.
.000000 1215.520000 So yeah, we think about it.
.520000 1217.880000 A fair amount. We'll be empty nesters
.880000 1221.320000 and not quite celebrating or 50th birthday
.320000 1222.520000 or something like that.
.520000 1224.240000 And so yeah, we think about it.
.240000 1225.080000 A fair amount.
.080000 1226.320000 I think there's a lot of excitement.
.320000 1229.800000 My husband may be more so as I continually remind him.
.800000 1231.280000 This has been my job.
.280000 1233.320000 Like this has just been a massive thing, you know,
.320000 1234.640000 now for 22 years.
.640000 1238.200000 And so it'll be 23 years of full-time parenting
.200000 1240.480000 as we launch the youngest one.
.480000 1243.480000 And yet we are relatively young.
.480000 1245.920000 I don't feel that at all when I hang out with the mops moms.
.920000 1249.320000 I'm like, wow, I really am aging.
.320000 1250.160000 But that's fine.
.160000 1252.680000 It doesn't hit me in a, oh my, I'm getting old.
.680000 1256.040000 I do just feel grateful that we're ready to jump
.040000 1257.040000 into a next chapter.
.040000 1258.560000 And there's a lot of excitement about it.
.560000 1260.800000 Thankfully, I adore my husband and the idea
.800000 1263.560000 of getting to spend just time with him
.560000 1265.520000 and kind of focus on that a little bit more.
.520000 1267.680000 Again, is a delightful thought.
.680000 1269.400000 He thankfully shares that thought.
.400000 1273.000000 And he's like, oh, Jess, it's going to be great.
.000000 1275.360000 And I'm like, oh, but we will miss a lot.
.360000 1277.960000 But I think then just the pleasure of hoping to check in
.960000 1278.800000 with kids and stuff.
.800000 1281.720000 But just to figure out what life together with the two of us,
.720000 1283.280000 again, is very exciting to us.
.280000 1285.200000 And I think not just in the big stuff,
.200000 1287.200000 of course, we could plan a trip or two.
.200000 1290.120000 I think about that already of what will we do that fall.
.120000 1292.640000 I already call it the licking my wounds fall.
.640000 1294.880000 So not this one, but the next one.
.880000 1296.960000 And he had, he's something that he was thinking
.960000 1299.120000 about a conference in the Boston area.
.120000 1301.000000 And I said, okay, let's play in that.
.000000 1302.520000 And then let's stop at the Berkshires
.520000 1303.720000 and we can look at fall leaves
.720000 1305.240000 because sadly, we won't be working
.240000 1306.480000 around a football schedule.
.480000 1308.680000 And I said too like, they're just ways I want to make sure
.680000 1310.000000 there's something that's filling in
.000000 1312.640000 where there might be losses to what we experienced.
.640000 1316.720000 But beyond a trip to me, really, it is, it's the daily life.
.720000 1318.520000 It's really just what would that be like
.520000 1320.080000 to just come home and to reconnect
.080000 1321.760000 and be able to focus on each other.
.760000 1324.480000 And I think it'll be an exciting time.
.480000 1328.720000 We talked last fall about planting seeds
.720000 1331.160000 or sowing into certain seasons of your life
.160000 1334.040000 so that you can reap the harvest in the next.
.040000 1335.560000 You must have listened to our podcast
.560000 1336.720000 and taken it seriously.
.720000 1339.440000 What you're doing is exactly what we were talking about.
.440000 1340.280000 But I like that.
.280000 1342.320000 I like that idea of, hey,
.320000 1343.920000 this is going to be a hard thing.
.920000 1347.040000 And let me set this up ahead of time, right?
.040000 1349.080000 Let me let me do this.
.080000 1351.760000 Oh, does that verse hope deferred makes the heart sick
.760000 1354.760000 but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
.760000 1359.280000 And so I think when we plan for things like this
.280000 1362.680000 and we get to that time, you're going to really enjoy that.
.680000 1364.320000 I mean, yeah, it's going to be difficult.
.320000 1366.960000 But also, it's going to be something
.960000 1369.320000 that you've looked forward to for a while
.320000 1374.320000 and it will sort of flourish and bring life into you
.320000 1377.280000 and your relationship with your husband at that time.
.280000 1379.160000 Now I think that's a beautiful thing.
.160000 1380.760000 And my relationship with him
.760000 1384.440000 and I think other things that I might have not fully
.440000 1386.480000 been able to give as much time to as I would want to.
.480000 1388.600000 Like when you mentioned this example,
.600000 1390.720000 I've just had the pleasure of seeing people
.720000 1393.040000 at different times and seeing hard things
.040000 1395.760000 and then wanting to participate in that
.760000 1398.840000 and how could I help in alleviating some of that burden
.840000 1399.680000 in people's lives.
.680000 1402.520000 And so one example and that is definitely
.520000 1405.080000 for the last handful of years will actually be on handful.
.080000 1408.320000 I have one of my best friends adopted children
.320000 1410.440000 and that's been a journey of a couple decades
.440000 1411.280000 that she's been on.
.280000 1412.920000 So I've watched that adoption journey
.920000 1415.400000 and then a couple of friends here
.400000 1417.960000 that I've been able to journey with through their adoption
.960000 1419.720000 and then seeing in the last couple of years
.720000 1422.360000 some families with foster children at our church
.360000 1425.520000 and just recognizing that deep need that they have
.520000 1426.720000 and how hard it is and I thought,
.720000 1428.520000 gosh, the only people who see how hard it is
.520000 1431.200000 are the ones who are in it and they don't have the capacity
.200000 1433.720000 to help and then just thinking, wait a minute, but I do.
.720000 1436.840000 And I think I'd like to view this next phase
.840000 1438.880000 as there's a gift in having more time
.880000 1440.960000 than I've had in the past and then how can I use that?
.960000 1445.360000 Well, how can I really help other people in that spot?
.360000 1448.040000 And so for me, that one, the clarity I'm seeing
.040000 1451.080000 is that that is in one area of my life
.080000 1453.760000 that I would really love to see how to help set up
.760000 1455.560000 and care for the families in our church
.560000 1456.760000 who are fostering children.
.680000 1462.680000 One of the ways that you've also seen some capacity
.680000 1466.640000 the help has been very far away from Kenneth Square
.640000 1468.920000 and maybe some experiences that you've had
.920000 1472.960000 in your artistic photography life
.960000 1477.760000 that I think are kind of a common thread of God
.760000 1481.080000 showing you different ways that he's gifted you,
.080000 1482.320000 different things that you see
.320000 1484.880000 that maybe other people may not see.
.880000 1488.760000 Can you talk about your experience in Rwanda?
.760000 1489.760000 Yes.
.760000 1493.400000 One thing I, as I look back on these different segments
.400000 1496.720000 of motherhood, I do note that I feel like
.720000 1500.040000 there have been different callings in different times.
.040000 1504.200000 One of those was in a surprising era of time
.200000 1507.320000 having children in elementary school, middle school
.320000 1510.080000 and I ended up with a handful
.080000 1513.400000 of international photography opportunities and travel
.400000 1516.160000 that was just a little shocking to me in the time
.160000 1519.320000 and also in knowing me, it was also a little shocking
.320000 1523.080000 because it was really taking me from a place
.080000 1526.440000 of where all my fears really lie
.440000 1529.240000 and then putting them in an intersection
.240000 1531.360000 with an area of giftedness
.360000 1533.880000 and it was a very interesting spot to be in.
.880000 1537.400000 So I had started out with some photography
.400000 1540.160000 when I just had some cute kids, people were saying,
.160000 1541.640000 "Oh, you're kind of good at that."
.640000 1544.200000 And I said, "No, I just want to photograph my kids."
.200000 1547.840000 And then as time went on, I had different opportunities
.840000 1551.640000 and grew in photography, lots of opportunities at church
.640000 1553.880000 to grow those skills.
.880000 1556.280000 So it was a few years later.
.280000 1558.240000 One time I was sitting in a conference
.240000 1561.120000 for the if gathering that we were a host site for that
.120000 1564.920000 and I had been thinking going into the conference,
.920000 1566.120000 God, what do you want me to do?
.120000 1568.600000 I'm just trying to figure out how to use my gifts
.600000 1569.840000 and where do you want me to be?
.840000 1573.360000 And I was thinking a fair amount about photography
.360000 1576.000000 and as the conference was starting,
.000000 1577.800000 they had a prayer time.
.800000 1579.400000 And even though a lot of heads were about,
.400000 1581.320000 I happened to look up at the screen
.320000 1583.640000 and on the screen they had all these people
.640000 1585.200000 and I might have even listed their names
.200000 1588.560000 and I saw that there was this photographer on stage
.560000 1591.040000 that was a part of if gathering that I had heard about
.040000 1593.880000 and I had started following her photography career
.880000 1596.960000 and I just could not believe that she was there.
.960000 1599.520000 This was the person I had just been feeling inspired
.520000 1601.800000 by she's a humanitarian photographer.
.800000 1604.160000 And I thought, now this is kind of interesting to me
.160000 1605.840000 because there are some photography things
.840000 1608.640000 that I might not feel as passionate about doing
.640000 1611.440000 but the idea of helping to highlight things
.440000 1614.640000 that I kind of feel like people need to know about this
.640000 1617.320000 or to just help direct us in our efforts.
.320000 1619.040000 Like I just got a lot of excitement out of that.
.040000 1621.840000 So I remember looking up and seeing her on the stage
.840000 1624.040000 and then she began talking and she did a talk
.040000 1626.280000 at the conference and I had been praying
.280000 1628.120000 before going into it about purpose
.120000 1631.640000 and what God might be calling me to do in this era of my life
.640000 1635.920000 and in a break there was an announcement that said,
.920000 1638.120000 we're gonna do a trip to Rwanda.
.120000 1640.840000 If anyone wants to apply for this trip,
.840000 1643.360000 you can go ahead and do that and I thought,
.360000 1645.160000 oh my goodness, that is me.
.160000 1648.080000 I was opposed to apply like I really should go
.080000 1649.880000 on this trip to Rwanda.
.880000 1652.840000 - Which can I interject here 'cause I know this about you.
.840000 1653.680000 - Yes.
.680000 1657.280000 - Travel and fear and anxiety, these are it.
.280000 1659.520000 This is not what you would typically jump.
.520000 1660.520000 - No, to do.
.520000 1662.040000 - Some people would be like, that's the coolest thing
.040000 1664.520000 I can't wait and I was like, oh my gosh,
.520000 1666.040000 I really think I should do this,
.040000 1669.840000 but wow, this goes against a lot of the fibers of my being.
.840000 1672.680000 And so I just thought, okay, I'm gonna take this step
.680000 1673.960000 but you know, maybe I won't get in.
.960000 1675.400000 Maybe they won't choose me.
.400000 1678.480000 And so I applied and low and behold,
.480000 1681.560000 there's a caller and email like, you're in and I'm like,
.560000 1683.280000 oh my goodness, I'm going to Rwanda.
.280000 1686.640000 And so I got a chance to go to Rwanda with a group
.640000 1689.760000 of 18 women with, if gathering, coordinating it
.760000 1691.960000 and it was a phenomenal trip.
.960000 1693.920000 And the part that I would like to share about that is
.920000 1696.240000 so we're talking about the itinerary
.240000 1698.600000 and we're sitting in Cagali, Rwanda,
.600000 1700.600000 getting these chances, hearing the schedule
.600000 1703.560000 that we're gonna be going out to these remote areas
.560000 1706.920000 to see schools where children are being sponsored
.920000 1709.160000 and they're gonna get an education
.160000 1711.880000 and we would also see, sadly, the contradiction
.880000 1714.000000 of children who didn't have this sponsorship.
.000000 1715.840000 So we would go to these villages
.840000 1717.360000 and we would go to the school
.360000 1719.760000 and see all that was being provided for these children
.760000 1722.160000 and then maybe visit them for a home visit
.160000 1724.560000 and find out that they were one child
.560000 1725.920000 and their family that got to go to school
.920000 1728.080000 but they didn't have money to send the other children.
.080000 1731.400000 And you would just see this vast difference
.400000 1732.840000 in what these children had
.840000 1736.000000 and it really meant eating for that day or not.
.000000 1738.600000 So it was an incredibly powerful trip
.600000 1740.440000 to see the power of child sponsorship
.440000 1744.000000 and what Africa knew life was doing was the organization.
.000000 1745.080000 But as we're sitting there
.080000 1746.360000 and we're going over the schedule,
.360000 1749.480000 someone said, oh, we have a special guest coming.
.480000 1751.720000 Somebody's gonna visit us when we're here
.720000 1756.720000 and who would be in the same guest house in Rwanda
.720000 1759.800000 but the very photographer that I had been following
.800000 1762.720000 her career who shows up on the screen
.720000 1765.240000 at the conference when I'm wondering what I should be doing
.240000 1768.600000 and she was in Kigali with me
.600000 1772.160000 and I just couldn't believe she was there.
.160000 1774.720000 She's so talented, she's so inspirational
.720000 1777.360000 and I just knew that there was this threat
.360000 1779.400000 of God weaving these paths together.
.400000 1780.960000 So I was with her like we went to church
.960000 1784.200000 and I'd said, could I just tell you a story?
.200000 1786.360000 And we ended up sitting at a little restaurant
.360000 1789.720000 literally called Heaven in Kigali Rwanda
.720000 1793.080000 as I got to tell her the story of how God was weaving
.080000 1796.400000 these things together and it was just incredible.
.400000 1798.120000 - I love that story.
.120000 1799.360000 - It's crazy.
.360000 1801.720000 - It is and it's just a,
.720000 1805.000000 there's no doubt that God was the one writing that story.
.000000 1805.840000 - No doubt, yes.
.840000 1807.640000 And then I think there's also freedom in it
.640000 1810.760000 and something I'm seeing now is I ended up getting a chance
.760000 1813.840000 to go to Rwanda, then I went to India,
.840000 1817.040000 we have a relationship with international justice mission
.040000 1819.280000 to just kind of shine a light on modern day slavery.
.280000 1820.520000 So I got to go to India.
.520000 1825.280000 I also had a chance in this era of life to go to Cambodia
.280000 1828.120000 also with an organization that fights against trafficking
.120000 1832.560000 helps young women find employment after trafficking
.560000 1835.080000 and just getting these chances to go
.080000 1837.000000 and I just thought this is so interesting
.000000 1839.440000 because this is not like exactly what I would do
.440000 1842.640000 or what I would have had a internal pull to do
.640000 1844.880000 but it just felt clear to me that I should
.880000 1847.520000 and I do feel like I was able to grow so much through that
.520000 1850.000000 and then I really have such a pleasure to be able to bring
.000000 1853.400000 back those images and share experiences of other people
.400000 1855.920000 and to highlight needs of other people around the world
.920000 1858.240000 and that of course, just totally affected and transferred
.240000 1859.640000 my own heart.
.640000 1862.600000 - Wow, that's amazing.
.600000 1866.280000 And maybe a foundation for something
.280000 1869.560000 that will come your way in your next chapter.
.560000 1872.640000 - Possibly and then also I think what I realize is that
.640000 1875.080000 it's okay if something's for a phase two
.080000 1879.280000 that where we might feel led may not be how we would
.280000 1882.640000 continue to feel for all of the chapters of our lives
.640000 1884.960000 and I think I have recently felt a freedom
.960000 1887.240000 that something can change and that's okay.
.240000 1890.880000 I feel like maybe in photography
.880000 1892.920000 that there were all these opportunities
.920000 1894.760000 that kind of centered at a certain time
.760000 1897.320000 and that not to say that is a chapter that's over
.320000 1901.080000 but it's not being like used or I don't feel like
.080000 1903.400000 the same direction I did but then I do feel like
.400000 1905.120000 with those capacities that I have
.120000 1908.520000 that just kind of being directed in different areas
.520000 1910.680000 and I think it's okay and it may come up again
.680000 1911.840000 but I think there's a lot of freedom
.840000 1914.400000 in realizing that where God has called us
.400000 1916.280000 doesn't necessarily mean that that is gonna be
.280000 1917.880000 the place for the rest of our lives.
.880000 1920.320000 - It's interesting that you should say that
.320000 1922.840000 because I've been thinking a lot about this.
.840000 1926.720000 It was on a recent episode that Mary Beth mentioned
.720000 1928.840000 well just because you used to do something
.840000 1932.360000 and don't anymore doesn't mean that you're still not that.
.360000 1936.000000 Like you're still, here's my guitar in the case
.000000 1937.960000 for who knows how long, you know it doesn't mean
.960000 1940.600000 that you're still not a musician, doesn't mean
.600000 1943.840000 that you still and just I had recently had the pleasure
.840000 1946.480000 of traveling to Memphis and Nashville
.480000 1949.240000 which was like within a couple of months
.240000 1951.360000 like a 20th anniversary of the same trip
.360000 1953.600000 it was funny to see how things have changed
.600000 1955.240000 but the last time I was in Nashville
.240000 1958.920000 I got to sing and play you know a couple of times
.920000 1961.840000 and I'm like what have I done 20 years?
.840000 1964.960000 I should be and it's like no it's okay
.960000 1967.760000 and I think that what you just said
.760000 1970.560000 'cause I like to reiterate that for our listeners
.560000 1975.560000 there's freedom in realizing that just because
.560000 1979.080000 you do something for a season or a time
.080000 1983.040000 doesn't mean that that's where you're gonna stay forever
.040000 1984.920000 and that's helpful to remember
.920000 1987.040000 not just with negative things like when we go through
.040000 1989.760000 hard times, oh it's a season, it's a season
.760000 1994.160000 but for the positive things too, like it's okay
.160000 1997.560000 because how then can we go on to do a podcast
.560000 2000.400000 if we're you know doing music or how can you start
.400000 2003.640000 an initiative to provide wraparound care
.640000 2006.360000 for our foster families if you're galvanic
.360000 2008.480000 around the world taking pictures, do you know what I'm saying?
.480000 2010.840000 - Yeah and I think that's a pleasure to realize
.840000 2012.560000 there's variety in it like that's not nice
.560000 2014.320000 that we're not doing the same thing
.320000 2016.840000 just like a you know a job you may get paid for
.840000 2020.960000 you know it's just to have variety in it is so helpful
.960000 2023.080000 and I feel like that same thing with vocation
.080000 2025.720000 and calling into what we have in our lives
.720000 2027.360000 even with unpaid work you know
.360000 2029.400000 it's still there's something that's fun to see
.400000 2031.000000 that there may be something totally new
.000000 2033.680000 around the bend that we're not even aware of yet
.680000 2036.640000 and I love that, it's actually reassuring to me in it
.640000 2039.040000 it gives me that hope of what that next phase will look like
.040000 2040.560000 is maybe it's something totally new
.560000 2043.240000 and maybe I'm gonna learn something new about myself
.240000 2046.920000 like this isn't in ending it really can be more like a beginning.
.920000 2052.960000 - How have you, how have you done that?
.960000 2056.240000 - My brain I'm like how, but how, how do we do that?
.240000 2060.320000 I'm someone who wants to know what's coming, you know?
.320000 2065.160000 And so how in your day to day, as you're looking ahead
.160000 2067.120000 as you're planning, as you're seeking opportunities
.120000 2071.040000 or not seeking them and God shows them to how are you putting
.040000 2075.560000 yourself in a position to be open to what God is bringing you?
.560000 2079.060000 - I think it's the little decisions every day
.060000 2081.560000 that you know really add up to how you're living your whole life
.560000 2086.440000 and for me I think it really is about the small things
.440000 2091.000000 and I look at the mother Teresa quote do small things
.000000 2094.240000 with great love and I am often inspired by that
.240000 2097.160000 but I do think that that also just helps me to make small
.160000 2100.480000 decisions realizing that at some point those could become
.480000 2104.360000 the significant things and for me having a little more clarity
.360000 2106.560000 and thinking about what does this next phase look like?
.560000 2109.520000 I've had the privilege of some intentionality in it
.520000 2111.600000 but I think it just means it's simple things.
.600000 2114.520000 When I think, when I get to the end of my life,
.520000 2117.360000 how can I look back and say, okay, I'm proud of the way I did that?
.360000 2120.240000 And you know, what would it look like today to make a decision
.240000 2122.240000 that I would hopefully be able to look back at the end
.240000 2124.880000 and be proud of the way I lived?
.880000 2127.400000 So for me as I analyze right now I think
.400000 2129.640000 well there are certain areas that I know I want to be
.640000 2132.640000 like I do want to serve and so that might look like
.640000 2135.880000 being a Bible study leader, it may look like.
.880000 2138.120000 Serving on the parade committee for the town,
.120000 2141.840000 whether community or church, I realize I do want to lead things.
.840000 2144.120000 I feel like I can do that and that in the past
.120000 2146.440000 looked like some things with mothers of young children
.440000 2148.280000 and I think now looks like this initiative
.280000 2151.280000 to develop a wrap around program for foster care.
.280000 2154.080000 I do know that I want to create.
.080000 2156.200000 I think we're all called to be creators
.200000 2158.760000 and for me that's looked like photography at some points.
.760000 2160.800000 It's looked like home design.
.800000 2163.520000 I took a pottery class recently to see if that was for me
.520000 2165.720000 and guess what, it's not.
.720000 2169.120000 Like the fact that my arm still hurts from throwing on the wheel
.120000 2171.720000 and this was a month ago I said, okay that was a good thing to try.
.720000 2174.080000 I'm just going to try things and you know maybe it's the thing
.080000 2176.480000 and maybe it's not but I do feel like there's something
.480000 2178.960000 about creating for sure.
.960000 2181.400000 And so I'm looking at these areas and I want to be a learner.
.400000 2183.520000 How else do I want to learn in one area
.520000 2185.360000 that I have found a lot of pleasure
.360000 2189.760000 in learning over the last, I think it's maybe about six years
.760000 2192.200000 is I take a weekly sign language class
.200000 2196.480000 and I have really loved getting to learn something new
.480000 2198.840000 but beyond learning is just I didn't know
.840000 2202.520000 by taking those classes I was going to become a part of a community
.520000 2206.600000 that I had no idea certain struggles or just what that was about.
.600000 2208.640000 Like I have a deaf friend now who was my teacher
.640000 2210.840000 and I get together with her every few weeks
.840000 2213.480000 and we get together for coffee and we chat.
.480000 2215.120000 All in sign language she's totally deaf.
.120000 2217.360000 So putting my thinking cap on and getting through
.360000 2219.760000 like a two hour coffee chat and sign language
.760000 2222.320000 but just learning that they're like now I have deaf friends
.320000 2224.400000 and I learn the plight and the challenges
.400000 2226.120000 of people in the deaf community
.120000 2228.480000 and then I've just gotten to see so many things.
.480000 2230.520000 So I may not know what that calling looks like
.520000 2232.920000 and I sometimes I'll say why am I doing this?
.920000 2235.720000 What is the reason like why am I taking this class every week
.720000 2238.000000 and I would say that there are two things
.000000 2240.600000 that have come up even just using that as an example
.600000 2243.680000 of taking these steps to learn and even in sign language
.680000 2246.080000 that I have a friend who has deaf children
.080000 2249.080000 and that was one of the encouraging things of why I wanted
.080000 2251.280000 to take these classes but I went to Florida
.280000 2256.920000 to see her a couple months ago and to see her now 17 year old son
.920000 2260.720000 just light up when I can walk in and communicate with him
.720000 2263.240000 and talk about his track, me learn about his jumps
.240000 2266.720000 and he's showing me videos and we're talking about his experience
.720000 2269.200000 and I just realized maybe it's the small thing.
.200000 2273.920000 Maybe this is part of it but to let him be seen and cared for
.920000 2275.920000 and to be able to communicate with him
.920000 2278.600000 just gave me such pleasure to be able to do that
.600000 2280.240000 and I thought okay maybe this is why
.240000 2282.560000 and maybe talking to my deaf friend
.560000 2286.000000 and just being her friend when many people can't communicate
.000000 2289.360000 with her just lets me know like maybe that's why
.360000 2294.360000 and one story that was so cool that I saw this play out this year
.360000 2297.760000 was at night to shine that Sarah mentioned.
.760000 2299.400000 I said you know in high school
.400000 2301.040000 I had the pleasure of going to a few proms
.040000 2304.160000 but night to shine is definitely the most fun prom
.160000 2305.920000 that anyone will ever go to.
.920000 2310.200000 It's like 200 special needs guests and it is a blast
.200000 2312.280000 and I've done that ever since our church has hosted it
.280000 2313.680000 I get to be a photographer for it
.680000 2317.200000 and it is the best photography gig that I ever get to do
.200000 2319.160000 is photographing night to shine.
.160000 2321.600000 And this year something very different happened
.600000 2323.800000 so as I've been learning sign language
.800000 2328.160000 my youngest son has kind of learned a few things along with me
.160000 2329.560000 mostly to his convenience.
.560000 2331.400000 He will try to ask me at church
.400000 2335.360000 he learned the sign for keys and ready and time to go
.360000 2336.360000 and can I leave.
.360000 2338.680000 Like he can say all these things in sign language
.680000 2340.880000 so he uses them very conveniently
.880000 2343.920000 but he has learned a fair amount of sign along the way
.920000 2346.920000 even I just met with my deaf friend a couple days ago
.920000 2349.040000 for coffee and I and he didn't have school
.040000 2350.120000 and I said hey do you want to come up
.120000 2351.680000 and he said yeah sure that'd be great
.680000 2352.720000 and he can now sit up there
.720000 2354.080000 and have part of this conversation
.080000 2356.120000 and I interpret a little bit in between
.120000 2359.640000 but like he now has this ability that's budding
.640000 2361.440000 but he picks it up so quickly
.440000 2362.840000 I'm like how do you do that?
.840000 2365.880000 Anyway but the part of the story this was remarkable this year
.880000 2368.480000 he went to night to shine and he signed up to be a buddy
.480000 2371.640000 a one-on-one person to be with one of our special needs guests
.640000 2374.800000 and he signed up a found out that he had a different color
.800000 2377.920000 lanyard that meant he was matched up intentionally with somebody
.920000 2380.880000 and that the need of that person was a little bit more pronounced
.880000 2383.880000 than some of the other guests and so we walk in
.880000 2386.960000 and then the person who runs it said to my son
.960000 2389.560000 I was looking for somebody to match up with this one guest
.560000 2393.120000 it's a little bit harder but just so you know he's deaf
.120000 2398.880000 and she had no idea that my son had any sign language experience
.880000 2403.120000 and he said oh well okay I signed a little bit
.120000 2406.880000 and when he met this guest this young man who came in
.880000 2411.440000 and my son could sign with him it was so powerful
.440000 2413.600000 and I just thought well that's why
.600000 2416.800000 like here's the reason and to be able to communicate with him
.800000 2419.240000 and I just kept checking in on them in the evening
.240000 2422.520000 and I got to sign with him and just that this young man
.520000 2425.680000 had people to talk to that night when he could have actually had
.680000 2430.600000 no one talk to him was just beautiful and I thought that's why
.600000 2434.120000 wow that's very broad tears to my eyes
.120000 2436.840000 I think we're all a little teary right now
.840000 2443.520000 yeah well and what I'm hearing then what you're saying is that
.520000 2446.720000 there is there's this open-handedness that you're approaching your life
.720000 2452.480000 with of God has made you in certain ways with certain interests
.480000 2456.400000 and certain gifts and you're just letting him lead you
.400000 2459.440000 and using those things and you're open to new experiences
.440000 2463.640000 and a lot of times I can speak for myself here
.640000 2467.840000 I'm trying to force it this is what I want this is how I want
.840000 2471.800000 things to work out because it's my interest it's my gift
.800000 2477.960000 but it's you're approaching it from a place of humility of
.960000 2480.880000 okay God this is how you've made me this is opportunity
.880000 2483.040000 you're giving me do whatever you want with it
.040000 2487.240000 which I think is a very good exhortation
.240000 2490.360000 it's funny you say open-handedness because I really struggle with that
.360000 2492.840000 I have a deep desire to want to control things
.840000 2496.240000 and it's never thought of myself as a controlling person
.240000 2499.640000 and I realized I don't usually try to control the humans in my life
.640000 2501.600000 it's God that I'm really trying to control
.600000 2504.240000 and I just hate that about myself
.240000 2507.600000 but I realized that I really struggle with open-handedness
.600000 2510.600000 so a couple years ago we were asked to find a word
.600000 2512.600000 that we wanted to inspire us throughout the year
.600000 2516.000000 and this was part of the mothership preschoolers community
.000000 2517.480000 and I chose the word open-handedness
.480000 2520.320000 so it's funny that you would always say that
.320000 2521.840000 God's been bringing some of that to fruition
.840000 2524.040000 and I feel like I'm actually quite terrible at it
.040000 2525.680000 and so thank you for saying that
.680000 2526.880000 and it's a different lens on it
.880000 2528.680000 but I still I struggle with that
.680000 2532.400000 and maybe these are areas where it shows areas of growth
.400000 2534.400000 where maybe I am a little bit more like that
.400000 2536.120000 but I definitely struggle with that
.120000 2538.280000 and it's a lot of where my fear comes in
.280000 2541.200000 and I will just want to clench my hands
.200000 2542.920000 versus keeping them open
.920000 2545.600000 and I know that I'm a huge fan of Anvaskim's book
.600000 2548.280000 1,000 Gifts and she has a line in there that talks about
.280000 2550.560000 there's a flame but when you clench so tightly
.560000 2553.680000 you snuff it out and I feel like I could
.680000 2557.680000 I have the propensity to be quite a snuffer of that light
.680000 2559.680000 because I want to protect it so much
.680000 2562.040000 like I especially this is a struggle for me
.040000 2564.160000 with children and how it's harder for me to let go
.160000 2567.440000 because I want to hold so tightly to protect them
.440000 2570.160000 but in that process that's not allowing them
.160000 2571.480000 to like grow and flourish as much
.480000 2574.160000 so anyway open-handedness is totally something
.160000 2576.840000 that I strive for and I'm constantly working on.
.840000 2582.440000 - I don't think God put that word in my brain unintentionally
.440000 2584.920000 so hey, we prayed, right?
.920000 2587.840000 - We prayed for the director of conversation.
.840000 2592.840000 Everything we have is from him and for the three of us
.840000 2597.160000 I can speak with clarity that we are his.
.160000 2600.480000 - For sure, I think one of the other things
.480000 2603.800000 into seeing the meaning in the small things
.800000 2606.200000 is by seeing Christ and everything
.200000 2611.200000 and that the way we, there's a song,
.200000 2614.160000 I always have a song for everything.
.160000 2615.160000 We welcome that.
.160000 2617.840000 I was thinking about some of these things
.840000 2621.120000 and I thought shout out to the arts just how much song
.120000 2623.360000 and writing can really impact and inspire us
.360000 2625.400000 and I just feel that deeply in my life
.400000 2627.640000 and so we commonly have a song for everything.
.640000 2630.280000 But there's a song that Sky Peterson has written
.280000 2632.520000 and it's called How I See the World
.520000 2635.800000 and the part of the chorus is how I see the world
.800000 2639.920000 is how I see you and how I see the world.
.920000 2643.240000 And that just gels so much that I think the way
.240000 2646.760000 that I function in life and the way I hope
.760000 2649.680000 that I see the world is that God would give me
.680000 2652.040000 like his eyes to see and that that would just color
.040000 2655.160000 the way I view the world and what I see.
.160000 2659.040000 And then therefore what I see impacts what I do.
.040000 2662.040000 And yeah, that's really significant.
.040000 2664.800000 - Reminds me of a song we used to sing,
.800000 2668.200000 Open the Eyes of my Heart Lord, Open the Eyes of my Heart.
.200000 2670.920000 I want to see you, yeah.
.920000 2674.200000 I lift it up in the light of your glory,
.200000 2677.520000 which the theme that we were sort of thinking about
.520000 2679.640000 as we were getting ready to have this conversation
.640000 2681.800000 was glory in the ordinary.
.800000 2686.600000 And it doesn't, doesn't escape my notice
.600000 2689.560000 'cause this is a great time for reflection and connection
.560000 2691.720000 when we have these conversations
.720000 2694.840000 that everything we talked about today,
.840000 2697.920000 all these great experiences, everything started out so small,
.920000 2701.080000 by little ordinary things like, oh,
.080000 2703.880000 that person doesn't have enough food to eat,
.880000 2707.040000 or oh, I am raising my children,
.040000 2709.360000 I'm keeping tiny humans alive at this end.
.360000 2714.360000 And when we look back, we can just see a hand of God,
.360000 2719.080000 all these glimpses of his glory in the ordinary.
.080000 2723.080000 He gets a testament to a life well lived.
.000000 2729.000000 I am so grateful that you are here with us today
.000000 2733.040000 because I am learning so much from you.
.040000 2738.040000 I love your approach to life,
.040000 2743.040000 how you are thinking about your next chapter by saying,
.040000 2747.720000 okay, picturing myself at the end of my life,
.720000 2750.640000 looking back, what do I want to see?
.640000 2754.560000 What do I want to have people say about me?
.560000 2758.760000 And that's kind of what the Christian life is
.760000 2760.240000 because we're working towards a goal,
.240000 2762.000000 we're working towards that victor's crown
.000000 2765.520000 that we will be getting someday in heaven.
.520000 2769.320000 And what we do in this world doesn't always show up
.320000 2773.560000 is amazing and great and glorious and whatever,
.560000 2778.560000 but we know that we want to run the race well,
.920000 2782.600000 that we want to work for the glory of God.
.600000 2787.920000 And I don't know, just kind of just enjoying this conversation
.920000 2790.560000 and the threads that are connecting it.
.560000 2793.320000 Yeah.
.320000 2797.080000 - There's, I think just seeing that there is divinity
.080000 2802.080000 in everything and I, one time I gave a talk
.080000 2806.080000 with my sister-in-law with the topic of ordinary saints
.080000 2811.080000 and it was based off of a poem by Jerard Manley Hopkins
.080000 2814.440000 and it talks about Christ in 10,000 places
.440000 2818.520000 and in 10,000 faces and just how he is in everything.
.520000 2821.080000 And there's another line in the poem
.080000 2823.400000 that talks about this procession going by
.400000 2824.960000 and it helped me to realize that I thought,
.960000 2826.440000 that is really the way I see it's like,
.440000 2829.680000 I feel like there really is like just a parade going by
.680000 2833.120000 and whether it's with a camera or the way I think
.120000 2835.720000 that like if I can like take a snapshot of that,
.720000 2838.440000 like I feel like it's really running by all of us all the time
.440000 2842.840000 and that's just a gift if we can have that perspective
.840000 2844.600000 that we can capture a moment of that,
.600000 2847.600000 that there really is divinity in our everyday
.600000 2849.840000 and in these ordinary moments.
.840000 2852.560000 - The kind of like the idea of Ebeneasers,
.560000 2854.320000 which we've talked about on this show before,
.320000 2855.680000 like what are the Ebeneasers?
.680000 2859.680000 I think this story that you told me about the sign language
.680000 2864.680000 at night to shine and the photographer who you had lunch with
.120000 2869.320000 and having these are Ebeneaser moments for you.
.320000 2874.320000 And also I call them Kairas moments and so I think that
.320000 2877.560000 so the difference between Kairas time and chronological
.560000 2882.560000 and the Kairas time is sort of known as moments set apart
.560000 2885.000000 that they're outside of chronological time.
.000000 2887.640000 Which is why when I had a photography business,
.640000 2889.800000 I wanted to call it Kairas photography
.800000 2893.480000 because it's like how can I take this moment, capture it
.480000 2894.800000 because it does have meaning.
.800000 2898.320000 It's an ordinary moment that has great meaning
.320000 2900.600000 and I love that word.
.600000 2903.960000 I love the word Kairas and these are.
.960000 2907.920000 I think that there are Kairas moments in our lives
.920000 2910.120000 that God uses and I just wanna like make sure
.120000 2911.480000 I give him credit for that.
.480000 2913.600000 I had my husband told a story recently
.600000 2915.760000 of a conference he went to and Oxford
.760000 2917.000000 and he was telling me about it
.000000 2918.760000 and I just was reflecting on it
.760000 2922.160000 and I said that was absolutely a Kairas moment of your life
.160000 2924.800000 and he was like you're totally right, it was.
.800000 2928.680000 And so I just wanted to make sure that when I do think back
.680000 2932.200000 on a day or on a week or on a year that we do realize
.200000 2934.760000 that God has given us these very special moments
.760000 2939.000000 that really transform our lives and give him credit for that.
.000000 2940.480000 - And transcend the timeline.
.480000 2943.600000 I like that at a moment that's outside of the time.
.600000 2945.000000 - Yeah, chronological time.
.000000 2948.840000 - This just made me think of a really good hot seat question.
.840000 2953.840000 - Okay, great, well I was gonna say we are ready, I think.
.840000 2955.440000 I think we're ready. - I think we're ready.
.440000 2957.200000 - I don't know if she's, are you ready Jess?
.200000 2958.040000 - Apparently not.
.040000 2959.680000 - No, okay, she's not, she's shaking her head up.
.680000 2960.520000 - I don't think I have a choice.
.520000 2963.360000 So here we go. - You don't have a choice.
.360000 2965.280000 - Okay, without any further ado,
.280000 2970.040000 we are on the spot with Jessica Zubrod.
.040000 2974.280000 - All right, my question is if you could time travel
.280000 2978.240000 to any time and place in history, where would you go?
.240000 2979.840000 And when would it be?
.840000 2982.520000 - That kinda reminds me of my children will say,
.520000 2985.320000 is there any phase you would go back to of the,
.320000 2987.280000 and I say no. (laughs)
.280000 2990.000000 And they look at me strangely and I said no, yeah.
.000000 2992.520000 It was great and it's a gift, but I wouldn't wanna go back
.520000 2994.000000 and do any of those parts again.
.000000 2997.160000 I just feel like the present tense is where I would wanna go,
.160000 2999.640000 but that would be sort of in my own lifespan.
.640000 3001.240000 I'm such a present tense person.
.240000 3002.440000 - That's fine.
.440000 3006.240000 - I will share, I was listening to a Beth Moore interview
.240000 3008.920000 and someone asked her, is there a part of your life
.920000 3011.320000 you would like to go back and do over again,
.320000 3013.120000 what would it be?
.120000 3016.440000 She said, none of them, I don't get to do that.
.440000 3019.320000 We love our lives and we keep moving forward.
.320000 3023.000000 So she's akin to you and just living in the present.
.000000 3025.240000 We can't go back and change it.
.240000 3026.800000 So why dwell on that thought?
.800000 3030.680000 It could be for a day, it could be for a year, it could be.
.680000 3032.080000 - You can give it a chance, you can give it a chance.
.080000 3034.440000 - There's no wrong answer. - There's no wrong answer.
.440000 3036.760000 In regard to parenthood, you know, I say there's no phase
.760000 3038.440000 I would wanna go back to for sure,
.440000 3040.840000 but I would love to go back and hold my kids again.
.840000 3042.920000 I say especially in fluffy Halloween costumes,
.920000 3044.360000 'cause I just loved those.
.360000 3045.840000 So I would wanna go back and hold them again,
.840000 3048.280000 but then people tell me that's what grandparenthood is for
.280000 3050.200000 because it's like you get, you love those kids
.200000 3051.280000 just as much as you're old,
.280000 3052.560000 but then you get to hand them back.
.560000 3055.000000 So I look forward to that era of life.
.000000 3058.920000 Sometimes I've thought about jumping back
.920000 3063.400000 to the day Jesus died to really see that in person,
.400000 3066.720000 'cause it would be just one of the hardest and saddest things
.720000 3069.160000 to see, but like to see what he endured
.160000 3072.920000 and how that moment that changed everything.
.920000 3077.280000 And really to see what happened in that moment,
.280000 3078.440000 you know, when the earth goes dark,
.440000 3079.640000 and I think it was very scary,
.640000 3082.000000 but I just think that there was obviously such evidence
.000000 3086.520000 that this was real and that Jesus is really God.
.520000 3089.120000 And so I think there's something that would be really,
.120000 3090.480000 and I don't like doing scary things,
.480000 3091.920000 so that's kind of an odd answer,
.920000 3094.120000 but I think it would be like scary
.120000 3097.160000 and beautiful all at the same time to be there on that day.
.160000 3098.880000 - There reminds me of lyrics to a song,
.880000 3102.280000 say the distance between his two hands is enough
.280000 3103.600000 to show you the depth of his love
.600000 3105.480000 or to measure the depth of his love.
.480000 3110.480000 And so being there would be just a real understanding,
.480000 3113.400000 I think, 'cause obviously we're on this side of it,
.400000 3115.640000 so we know that he rose again,
.640000 3119.720000 which is seeing how far he was willing to go.
.800000 3122.600000 - Hmm, wow, that's a great answer.
.600000 3127.720000 - All right, Sarah, give her something light-hearted.
.720000 3132.000000 - Okay, this is the famous food question.
.000000 3136.680000 If you could choose one thing,
.680000 3140.840000 one food item to take on a desert island,
.840000 3143.120000 which would it be?
.120000 3143.960000 - Ooh.
.960000 3148.160000 - Can I just take all Lebanese food with me?
.160000 3149.000000 That's my favorite.
.000000 3151.280000 You want me to do one food item?
.280000 3154.600000 That is one, if I could only eat one type of food
.600000 3156.500000 forever for the rest of my life,
.500000 3157.840000 I would choose Lebanese food.
.840000 3160.040000 There could never be too much lemon vinegar
.040000 3161.360000 or salt in most things I eat.
.360000 3164.400000 So I just, everything, all those things.
.400000 3166.280000 I love, love, love.
.280000 3167.560000 - That's great.
.560000 3168.560000 - You want one more?
.560000 3170.560000 - Sure.
.560000 3171.520000 - And then I have one.
.520000 3172.840000 - Okay.
.840000 3175.640000 You mentioned that art and music and things
.640000 3177.160000 are something that speak too deeply.
.160000 3178.440000 - Yeah.
.440000 3181.080000 - What's an artist that you've been into lately?
.080000 3182.360000 What's their medium?
.360000 3183.640000 What can you tell us about?
.640000 3186.600000 What you've been seeing or listening to
.600000 3188.160000 or whatever recently?
.160000 3191.360000 - Well, Andrew Peterson is my very favorite musician.
.360000 3194.800000 And so I was listening to resurrection letters
.800000 3196.480000 a lot leading up through Holy Week,
.480000 3199.880000 but I do feel as though his music is a bit
.880000 3201.600000 of an explanation of life to me,
.600000 3204.040000 like he's such a poet and deep thinker.
.040000 3208.760000 And I think he has an ability to just unravel
.760000 3211.360000 some of the confusion in life in the art of music.
.360000 3215.600000 And I just, I just, that, I absolutely do it.
.600000 3218.520000 - Great recommendation.
.520000 3222.480000 - I used to hold my thunder because my question was,
.480000 3226.000000 what is the story behind how you became a fan of his?
.000000 3228.400000 - Hmm.
.360000 3234.880000 I think that there was a, one of the first things
.880000 3239.560000 that drew me in was through a more challenging era
.560000 3242.840000 of marriage and just the ways that we,
.840000 3245.040000 as husbands and wives just need healing
.040000 3247.320000 and working together in our marriage.
.320000 3250.760000 And the song dancing in the Mindfields came up
.760000 3254.560000 and I just loved that song
.560000 3257.400000 and it just resonated deeply with me.
.400000 3259.640000 So that song may have started and then had a,
.640000 3263.800000 the pleasure of going to concerts in different areas
.800000 3267.360000 and times and I just think maybe because he's a similar age,
.360000 3270.400000 he's just a little older, walking a few steps ahead,
.400000 3272.960000 caring about similar things and he thinks in a way
.960000 3274.800000 that I wish I did, but I don't.
.800000 3277.120000 And so I get to, you know, I get to have the pleasure
.120000 3280.560000 of listening to him process life.
.560000 3282.480000 - Yeah, we've discussed this before.
.480000 3286.080000 And I, have you, did you see him at the Ryman?
.080000 3288.320000 - Yes, I saw behold the Lamb at the Ryman.
.320000 3289.160000 - That's what I thought.
.160000 3290.000000 - Yeah.
.000000 3290.820000 - Yeah, that's awesome.
.820000 3294.520000 I was thinking about that when I was in Nashville
.520000 3299.520000 last week, walking past, I was like, oh, yeah, that's great.
.520000 3306.640000 Well, Jess, we have really appreciated you joining us.
.640000 3312.440000 I am, it's kind of awestruck by the way
.440000 3316.920000 that God has shown up in your life
.920000 3319.840000 and the way that you've processed that
.840000 3321.760000 because some of the things you shared with us,
.760000 3324.600000 I think are gonna be really helpful for our listeners.
.600000 3326.960000 I know they're, they've been helpful for me.
.960000 3330.040000 Which, you know, selfishly when we record podcasts,
.040000 3332.800000 it's nice to be able to hear what we need to hear.
.800000 3336.120000 - Thanks for listening.
.120000 3337.120000 - Yeah, thanks for sharing.
.120000 3340.120000 I think one of the things that we talk about a lot
.120000 3345.120000 after we've done an episode is how we see what God is doing
.560000 3349.760000 and our lives is a lot of times on the same page.
.760000 3352.680000 And so I think a lot of the things that you're learning
.680000 3355.520000 are good for us as we're maybe at different stages
.520000 3357.800000 of motherhood but looking ahead
.800000 3359.560000 and trying to process some of these things.
.560000 3361.320000 So thank you.
.320000 3364.000000 - And just so you know, I don't think I had time
.000000 3365.160000 to process it back then.
.160000 3367.800000 And I do think I would, it's a unique stage
.800000 3370.440000 and I just think the reason this processing is coming
.440000 3372.120000 is because I'm in a transition.
.120000 3376.560000 And so there's just sort of a privilege of the intentionality
.560000 3378.560000 that I can have right now that is not every phase
.560000 3381.200000 and nor have I thought about, you know, things quite this way
.200000 3384.600000 all along but it's just as I approach a transition
.600000 3387.600000 it has definitely made me think and process a lot.
.600000 3393.040000 - Which scripture verse comes to mind for you right now
.040000 3395.000000 that you would like to leave our listeners with today?
.520000 3403.400000 - I am such a proverbs, three, five and six fan
.400000 3404.960000 to trust the Lord of all your heart.
.960000 3406.480000 Lean not on your own understanding
.480000 3407.680000 and all your ways acknowledge him
.680000 3409.520000 and he will make your path straight.
.520000 3412.560000 And I think it was so much confusion and choices
.560000 3415.400000 and challenges, particularly to motherhood.
.400000 3418.640000 I think just a trust that he will make this path straight.
.640000 3419.800000 - Amen to that.
.800000 3422.380000 (gentle music)
.380000 3424.960000 (gentle music)
.960000 3434.220000 - Hey y'all, Mary Beth here.
.220000 3437.900000 Sarah and I are so glad that you chose to listen to our podcast.
.900000 3441.540000 And while we think that we're awesome friends to have,
.540000 3443.980000 we just wanted to clarify that we are not mental health
.980000 3446.460000 professionals and want you to know that this podcast
.460000 3450.180000 should not take the place of any paid professional advice.
