The word “no” sounds simple, but it carries an entire theory of reality inside a single syllable. We start with a scientist trying to date the Earth and accidentally uncovering a public health disaster: Claire Patterson’s work on isotopes collides with the fact that lead contamination is everywhere. By building cleaner labs and comparing ocean layers, mountain snow, and polar ice, he shows lead is arriving from above, fast, and from human industry, especially tetraethyl lead in gasoline. The key lesson is a decision-making lesson: “common” does not mean “natural,” and widespread exposure does not equal safety. That mindset becomes a blueprint for critical thinking, evidence, and public policy.
From there, “no” becomes the hinge between invention and rejection. Chester Carlson’s early xerography looks crude, smells bad, and even smokes, yet it points toward a future of plain paper copies that companies like IBM, GE, Kodak, and RCA cannot imagine. The market only becomes obvious after the tool exists. This is where negotiation, forecasting, and leadership judgment collide: sometimes “no” really means “I can’t see it yet,” not “it can’t be done.” But the episode keeps the contrast sharp by pairing that kind of “no” with the kind that protects people when proof is incomplete, reminding us that innovation without responsibility is not progress.
That protective “no” comes into focus with Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey at the FDA and thalidomide. She refuses to approve a drug promoted as safe because the application leans on testimonials, weak testing, and unclear long-term effects. Her stance is not anti-medicine, it is pro-evidence. The result is catastrophic harm avoided at scale in the United States and a shift toward stronger drug regulation, clinical trial oversight, and proof of safety and effectiveness. The episode also draws a bright line around consent: when “no” is about someone’s body or participation, it is final. No one negotiates that boundary, and clarity here is a form of care.
Then the lens flips to what happens when the right “no” gets ignored. Challenger’s engineers warn that cold will change rubber O-rings and that they do not know the launch is safe, yet management turns “no” into “yes,” with fatal consequences. Dating Earth And Finding Lead

SPEAKER_01Is the earth really really old? Not billions of years, maybe, right? I mean, how old is it? And how could anyone possibly know? In 1956, a geochemist named Claire Patterson produced an answer to that question. About 4.55 billion years. But while trying to determine the age of the Earth, Patterson discovered something else. Something that had nothing to do with ancient rocks and everything to do with the air people were breathing right then. There was lead everywhere. The problem for Claire was that lead was the clock he was trying to read. Uranium-238 eventually becomes lead-206. Uranium-235 eventually becomes lead-207. And by measuring the proportions of those isotopes and meteorites, Patterson could calculate how long that d decay had been taking place. Except ordinary environmental lead kept getting into his samples and overwhelming the tiny, tiny quantities he was trying to measure. It was literally interfering with the research. Pretty annoying. For Claire. The problem for everyone else was that there was lead everywhere. Patterson's continued research revealed that human activity was dispersing lead into the environment roughly eighty times faster than it was being deposited in ocean sediment. Then Patterson and his uh partner Mitsunobu Tatsumoto found that surface ocean water contained three to ten times as much lead as the deep water. Now that's backwards. For most comparable elements, the concentrations are higher in deep water. The enormous excess of this at the top layers of the water indicated that the lead is relatively newly arrived from above, and not merely entering the oceans through, you know, natural weathering of rocks down there. That's gonna happen. The water's gonna move, something's gonna erode, a little bit of lead's gonna be released into the water because it was uncovered. That happens, but that's not what they're finding. They're finding that we are we have been piling lead on top of the water. It hasn't even had time enough to get to the bottom. We're piling it up so fast. So what they did is they took a little trip and they collected snow from Mount Lassen, which is about 500 miles from Los Angeles. Its lead isotopes matched lead found in Los Angeles air and gasoline, not prehistoric California sediment. Later, Greenland and Antarctic ice showed a historical rise, modest increases in lead following the Industrial Revolution, followed by an enormous acceleration during the era of lead and gasoline. And the major source of this was tetraethyl lead. They had started adding that to gas since the 1920s to prevent engine knock. It was enormously profitable, and the lead industry's accepted experts had spent decades arguing that the amounts of lead found in people and the environment were normal and therefore harmless. Patterson's answer was that common did not mean natural. If everyone had been exposed to industrial lead, then measuring everyone and finding lead in them didn't prove that lead was safe. It just proved that everyone had been exposed. Established toxicologists called him a zealot. They called him a rabble rouser. Public health officials dismissed him. He made an appeal to the governor of California, and that was politely rejected. In 1971, do you understand what I'm saying? 1971, he was excluded from the National Research Council panel studying atmospheric lead, despite being the scientist who had developed the techniques capable of accurately measuring it. But he kept going. When an agency asked whether other laboratories agreed with his measurements, Patterson replied that scientific questions were not decided by majority vote. By 1973, the EPA had begun regulating lead and gasoline. The final American ban on leaded gas for on-road vehicles arrived in 1996, just after Claire Patterson died. The EPA reported that children's blood lead levels had fallen about 70% during the phase out. Lead solder was eventually removed from American food cans as well. Another problem Patterson investigated. Claire Patterson set out to discover how long the earth had existed. To get the right answer, he had to first remove lead from a room. And then he spent the rest of his life trying to remove it from the world.
Why “No” Holds So Much

SPEAKER_01Why do we say it? What do we mean by it? And what happens next? Sometimes no. Comes after you've proved something. Sometimes it comes before anyone has understood what you've proved.
Xerox And The Rejections That Missed
SPEAKER_01I mean, in the 1930s, Chester Carlson worked in the patent department of an electronics company. Patent work involved an enormous number of documents, drawings, specifications, and frequently required several copies of each one. Today you would put the original in a machine, press a button, and you would receive a copy. That machine did not exist. Carbon paper could make duplicates while something was being typed, but it couldn't copy a document that already existed. Photographic copies required specialized equipment, chemicals, treated paper, time, you know, the whole photography process. Carlson wanted a machine that could reproduce an existing page quickly without wet chemicals, preferably on regular paper. So he began experimenting in his kitchen. His experiments smelled bad. Some produced smoke. At one, one nearly started a fire. His wife eventually encouraged him to continue his research in a different place. So he rented a small room above a bar and behind a beauty parlor in Astoria, Queens. And he hired a physicist named Otto Cornay to help him. On October 22nd, 1938, Cornay wrote, 1022, 38, Astoria, on a glass microscope slide. Carlson rubbed a sulfur-coated metal plate with a handkerchief to give it a static electrical charge. And they placed the slide over the plate and they exposed it to bright light. Then they removed this slide and dusted the plate with a little bit of powder. And the powder adhered in the shape of the words. Carlson pressed a sheet of wax paper against it and peeled the paper away. And there it was. 1022 38 Astoria. The first xerographic copy ever made. Corneau was not particularly impressed. He soon found another job. And for the next five years, he offered the process to more than twenty companies. IBM said no. General Electric said no. Eastman Kodak. An entire company devoted to reproducing images said no. RCA said no. Even the National Inventors Council said no. The demonstration was crude. The image wasn't especially attractive, and the company's Carlson approached did not believe there would be a substantial market for a machine that made plain paper copies. Apparently nobody needed that many copies. Finally, in 1944, a nonprofit research organization called the Battel Memorial Institute agreed to help him develop the process. Three years later, Battel licensed it to a small photographic paper company in Rochester, New York. The company was called Haloid. Haloid was struggling. Kodak dominated the photographic business, and Haloid needed something Kodak didn't have. So it took a chance on the invention that Kodak and nearly everybody else had rejected. And it still took another 12 years. One required dozens of separate operations to produce a single copy. Test customers returned them. Many of the scientists working on the project thought the entire idea was stupid. And then in 1959, 21 years after 102238 Astoria. You could place a document on a sheet of glass, push a button, and receive a copy on ordinary paper. People needed considerably more copies than anyone had imagined. The machine was an enormous success. Haloid eventually renamed itself Xerox. Xerox became not merely the name of a company, but a verb. I mean people say I gotta go Xerox this all the time. And it's in dictionary definitions as a verb. Carlson's unwanted invention changed offices, schools, libraries, publishing, law, government. I mean, just the circulation of information itself. The companies that rejected Chester Carlson had looked at his crude little image and said no, because they couldn't see a market for millions of copies. Once people could make them, they made trillions of copies. Which makes it tempting to conclude that no is simply the word people use immediately before they're proven wrong. But it isn't. Sometimes no's the best answer you never knew you received.

Thalidomide And A Life Saving Refusal
SPEAKER_01In 1960, Dr. Francis Oldham Kelsey began working for the United States Food and Drug Administration. She was one of only a small number of physicians responsible for reviewing applications for new drugs. One of her first assignments was an application from Richardson Merrill for a drug called Kevidon. Today we know it as thalidomide. Thalidomide was a sedative. It was already available in dozens of countries and was widely promoted as remarkably safe. It was prescribed for anxiety, sleeplessness, and significantly morning sickness during pregnancy. The company expected American approval to be routine. But Francis Kelsey said no. More precisely, what she said was, you have not given me sufficient evidence to say yes. The application relied heavily on testimonials rather than controlled studies. The animal testing was inadequate. The long-term effects were unclear, and reports had begun appearing that thalidomide could cause serious nerve damage. At the time, a drug application could automatically take effect after sixty days unless the FDA objected. So Kelsey repeatedly declared the application incomplete and asked for better evidence. The company applied pressure. It contacted her supervisors. It accused her of being unreasonable and unnecessarily delaying a drug that was already being used around the world. Every sixty days the clock returned. And Frances Kelsey said no again. Then physicians in Germany and Australia began noticing something horrifying. An extraordinary number of babies were being born with severe abnormalities. Some had shortened or absent limbs. Others had damage to their eyes, ears, hearts, internal organs. Many pregnancies ended in miscarriage or stillbirth. Doctors eventually found the connection. Their mothers had taken thalidomide. Thousands of children around the world were affected because thalidomide had been distributed in the United States experimentally. The country wasn't spared completely. But Frances Kelsey's refusal to approve it for general sale prevented this catastrophe from occurring here on the scale seen everywhere else. She had not known that thaludamide caused those particular birth defects. Well, she did know was that the company had not proved it didn't. Her refusal also helped the 1962 amendments that transformed American drug regulation, requiring manufacturers to provide stronger evidence of safety and effectiveness, and establishing greater control over clinical trials. Francis Kelsey's no did not invent anything. It didn't cure disease. It did not produce a dazzling piece of new technology. It simply prevented millions of people from taking a drug before anyone actually knew what it could do to them. Sometimes no is not an obstacle to progress. Sometimes, no is the thing that allows us to survive it. I mean, this isn't a terribly unreasonable take on no. Your parents use the word what may have seemed like a million times while you were growing up. No, don't touch that exceedingly hot stove because you're going to get seriously injured and potentially traumatized for decades. I know because it happened to me, and I love you, and I'm not going to let you learn this particular lesson firsthand, right? That usually gets shortened to no for obvious reasons. No may be the most information-dense word in the English language. It can contain experience, evidence, prediction, fear, and love, and occasionally because I said so.

When No Means Consent
SPEAKER_01I'm about to say something that has to be said very carefully. No does not always mean no. If no concerns another person's body consent or their own participation, yes, it does completely. No one gets to negotiate that no. Just them. But no isn't always a personal boundary. Sometimes no is a claim about reality. Sometimes it means not now. Sometimes it means not this way. Sometimes it means not at that price. Sometimes it means nobody here has ever done that before. And sometimes it means I've decided what's possible for you. That's a very different no. Anne Levine was exceptionally good at recognizing the difference. Many people living in Manhattan appear to possess this same ability, at least from my personal observations. On the many trips that Anne and I have taken to New York City over the years, I learned one thing quite plainly. No is sometimes just the beginning of the negotiations. Imagine,
Negotiation No And The Empty Table
SPEAKER_01if you will, let me put the push the button. Imagine yourself at a large chocolate restaurant on Broadway near Union Square. Chocolate fondue, dessert pizza, chocolate drinks, hug mugs. There are literal pipes of chocolate running around the ceiling, an entire chocolate-centered universe. The place is packed. You're trying your best to maintain some sort of personal space, but it's constantly being interrupted by someone else's personal space, but you're there with friends you consider family. Your goddaughter is there, and you're gonna get us some chocolate. You make it to the hostess stand, and you're told there are no available tables, and the wait could be as long as two hours. And then you go, because this is Anne Levine. And we went. Nobody stopped us. We were seated, we had lunch and lots of chocolate. It was wonderful. No table had apparently been accurate right up until the moment Anne saw a table. She simply updated the information faster than the restaurant did. And did the restaurant mine? Not overtly, I mean they live there too. But sometimes no isn't outdated information. Sometimes no is the information. Sometimes no is simply the answer to a question. And
A Quick Capybara Reality Check
SPEAKER_01here's a question you have all been asking yourself. Have they found Sambo the Capibara yet? And for those of you who don't know the story, uh Sambo is a Capiberry who arrived at England's Marwell Zoo with her sister, Tango, on a Monday in March of this year, and on Tuesday they escaped. Tango was quickly recovered, but Sambo made it out of the zoo, visited the vicinity of a pub, took to the river Itchin, successfully evaded zoo employees, tracker dogs, thermal drones, camera traps. The Marwell Zoo's been looking for her ever since. And we've talked about her on the show a few times. So no, she's not been found yet, though there are still credible sightings, the last of which was mid-July when she was sighted by a fisherman. At least that's the last reported. Samba has uh declined to comment, though several attempts have been made.

But eventually every one of us ends up on the other side of the word. Sometimes you're the person who has to say it. And sometimes it matters whether anyone listens.
Challenger And The Ignored Warning
SPEAKER_01On January twenty-seventh, nineteen eighty six, the night before the Space Shuttle Challenger was scheduled to launch, engineers at the company that manufactured its solid rocket boosters participated in a telephone conversation with NASA. Florida was experiencing unusually cold weather. The temperature expected at launch was far below that of any previous shuttle launch. The engineers were worried about the O-rings. O-rings are little rubber sealed seals installed in the joints between sections of the rocket boosters. During ignition, the seals are exposed to expand and prevent extremely hot gases from escaping through those joints. But rubber changes in cold weather. Becomes harder and less flexible. The engineers had evidence from previous launches suggesting that the seals might not respond quickly enough at low temperatures. Their recommendation was clear. Do not launch. They couldn't prove that the O-rings would fail. And that was the problem. No one had launched a shuttle under conditions this cold before. The engineers did not have evidence that it was safe. NASA officials challenged the recommendation. They wanted to know why the engineers were suddenly proposing a temperature limit that had never previously been part of the launch rules. The engineering company's managers stopped the conference to reconsider. And during that private discussion, something changed. The engineers had said no. Management changed it to yes. The company withdrew its objection and recommended that the launch proceed. The following morning, on January twenty eighth, Challenger lifted off. The temperature was thirty-six degrees Fahrenheit. In the cold, an O-ring in the right booster failed to seal properly. Hot gas escaped through the joint and damaged the shuttle's external fuel tank. 73 seconds after liftoff, Challenger broke apart. All seven people aboard were killed. The engineers had not predicted every detail of what would happen. They couldn't say with certainty that the shuttle would be destroyed. They had said something much more responsible. We do not know that this is safe. And their no was treated as an obstacle to be overcome. The people who wanted to proceed kept asking questions until they received a different answer. There's an important difference between refusing to accept a no because someone cannot imagine what is possible, and refusing to accept a no from the people who understand what can go wrong. Sometimes no means convince me. Sometimes no means find another way. And sometimes no means if you continue, people may die. Knowing that difference is not merely a matter of persistence, it's sometimes it's a matter of survival. But saying no does not always mean possessing power. I mean sometimes saying no is how people discover they have it.
Equal Pay And Withholding Participation
SPEAKER_01In 1968, 187 women worked as sewing machinists at the Ford Automobile plant in Dagenham, England. They made car seat covers. It was skilled, physically demanding work. Women had to cut and sew heavy materials into complicated shapes, working quickly enough to supply an enormous automobile factory. Ford introduced a new system for classifying jobs. The women's work was placed in a lower skill category than work largely performed by men. The classification meant that the women could continue to receive less money and the women objected. Ford did not agree. So the women stopped sewing. Now at first glance, 187 sewing machinists did not appear terribly powerful compared with one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world. Ford employed thousands of people at Dagenham. The plant contained massive presses, assembly lines, engines, cranes, machinery worth millions. But Ford had overlooked something. You can build almost an entire automobile without the women who make the seats. But you can't finish one. As the supply of seat covers disappeared, unfinished cars accumulated, production slowed, and then it stopped. Thousands of other employees could no longer work because a hundred and eighty-seven women had decided they would not. That no of theirs traveled through the entire factory. The strike lasted three weeks. Government Minister Barbara Castle intervened, and the women received an increase that brought them closer to the men's rate, although Ford still refused to recognize their work at the skill level they demanded. That recognition would take another 16 years. But the strike helped force the question of equal pay into British national politics. Two years later, Parliament passed the Equal Pay Act of 1970. The women did not begin with legislation, they did not begin with political authority. They did not even begin with the fullest support of everyone who was supposed to represent them. They began by declining to continue. No, we will not perform skilled work while you officially declare that it is not skilled. Ford had considered them replaceable. Their absence demonstrated that they were indispensable. Sometimes the most powerful thing a person can withhold is not permission, but participation. And sometimes you don't discover how much power you possess until you stop giving it away. My opinion's the only one that counts. Sometimes participation means going to work. Sometimes it means helping a system do something that you know is wrong.
Quiet Resistance In Wartime France
SPEAKER_01During the Second World War, the village of Les Chambons Solignon sat on a mountainous plateau in southern France. The people of the region were predominantly French Protestants. Their own history included generations of religious persecution. They knew what it meant to be hunted by the government because of who you were and what you believed. When France fell to Germany, the new French government began cooperating with Nazi racial laws. Jewish people were registered, arrested, imprisoned, and eventually deported to the camps. Refugees began arriving on the plateau, and the people of Les Chambons took them in. It did not happen through one dramatic decision made at a single meeting. A person arrived and needed somewhere to sleep. A family gave them a room. A child needed to be hidden. Someone placed the child in a school or boarding house. Then another person arrived and another. The villagers concealed refugees in private homes, hotels, farms, schools. They supplied food, forged identification papers, ration cards, sometimes guided people across the border into neutral Switzerland. When the people came looking, the residents did not cooperate. Children learned that when strangers asked questions, they did not know anything. Farmers had not seen anyone. Teachers didn't recognize those names. Neighbors did not know where anybody had gone. This was no, expressed in hundreds of small sentences. No, that person's not here. No I can't help you. No, I won't tell you. Authorities arrested the village's Protestant pastor, his assistant, and the local school headmaster. They were held for several weeks and then released. The rescue continued. Germans later occupied southern France directly. Searches became more dangerous. People were arrested. Some of those people were captured, deported, and killed. The rescue continued. Between 1940 and 1944, the village and the surrounding communities provide provided refuge for approximately 5,000 people, including an estimated 3,000 to 3,500 Jews. Thousands survived because an extraordinary number of ordinary people reached the same conclusion. The government may possess the authority to demand our assistance. It does not possess the right. The villagers could not end the war. They could not defeat the German army. They could not dismantle the machinery of the Holocaust. But they could refuse to become part of it. We often imagine conscience as a feeling, a private voice telling us that something is wrong. But conscience becomes something mean of meaningful at the moment that it costs us something. A person asks, where are your neighbor's hiding? You know what may happen if you lie. You also know what will happen if you tell the truth. And you say, No. Now after that, we need to uh let the word become a little lighter again, don't you think? Because no does not only prevent, protect, resist, or refuse, sometimes no creates.
Creativity Built From Constraints
SPEAKER_01In nineteen sixty nine, French writer Georges Perec published a novel called La Disposition or The Disappearance. It was approximately three hundred pages long. It contained mysteries, deaths, jokes, elaborate descriptions, plot twists, and an increasingly desperate search for something that had vanished. And nowhere in the entire novel did Perec use the letter E. Not once. E is the most frequently used letter in French. It appears in ordinary articles, pronouns, verb forms, thousands of words a writer might normally use without thinking. Correct prohibited himself from using all of them. He did not write the novel and then remove the ease. The absence determined which words could exist in the first place. Every sentence had to be invented within the restriction. The characters themselves sense that something's missing, although they can't quite identify it. The absent letter shapes the language, the plot, and the peculiar world of the book. I mean, even the author's name could not appear. Normally inside it. Then somebody decided to translate the novel into English, which has a an equally serious dependency on the letter E. Translator uh Gilbert Adair called the English version a void. He preserved the restriction. The entire English translation also contains no E. And this admittedly an unreasonable amount of trouble to g to go through to write a book. But the book be exists because of the prohibition, not in spite of it. If Perek had permitted himself to use every available word, the disappearance would have been an entirely different novel. And probably no one would still be marveling at its construction more than 50 years later. One of my favorite books in the world is similar to this. It's by Frederick Bachman. And it's called Brit Marie Was Here. And the entire novel is written in present tense. There is no past tense reference anywhere in the book. Until you get to the very last line, and indeed the title of the book. You know, we we tend to think creativity requires complete freedom. Every color, every sound, every word, every possibility. I think differently. I think person for me, if I'm given very strict confines, my creativity increases. Because I have to envision more happening in that little bit of space. For me, that's how it works. I don't know. A frame excludes most of the world so that we can see the picture, you know. A sculptor removes everything that won't be part of the figure. A songwriter chooses these chords instead of every chord. A life becomes one life because it can't contain every possible life. Creation is not made entirely from yes. Every choice, you know, contains a refusal. No, not that word. No, not that no. No, no, no, that doesn't belong here. Yes chooses a possibility. No gives it a shape.
What Kind Of No Is This
