Steelers Adding SWAGGER In This Year's Training Camp | Episode 64

Brien Hanley Season 2 Episode 64

The Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive backs have stepped up their game, bringing an attitude that’s hard to ignore. With key additions like Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay, competition in practice has reached high levels, pushing all players to elevate their performance. Joey Porter Jr. (JPJ) is showcasing newfound confidence this season, addressing the issues that led to penalties in the past.

This year's cornerback room is arguably the deepest in recent memory, featuring talents like Ramsey, Slay, JPJ, and promising newcomers such as Echols, Trice Jr., Bishop, and Kent. Meanwhile, strong safety options like Thornhill and Clark add even more depth to the secondary. However, the fierce competition means someone productive will inevitably be cut due to limited roster space. The battle for those spots will ultimately strengthen the Steelers' defense, as they navigate a roster built for dynamic play rather than redundancy.

Alex Highsmith is facing significant pressure as he navigates a pivotal season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Often overshadowed by star teammate TJ Watt, Highsmith emerged as a formidable force in his own right, ranking as the 8th best edge rusher according to PFF. With an impressive pass rush grade of 89 and a solid run defense rating of 78.3, he recorded six sacks in just 11 games last season, showcasing his durability despite having missed only two games in his previous four seasons, until last year. However, the emergence of Herbig complicates matters.

As Highsmith enters a contract year with no guaranteed money left, the stakes could not be higher. Another season reflecting his previous performance might put him on the trading block, with the Steelers poised to save $14.5 million through a post-June 1 designation trade.

Terry McLaurin would undoubtedly elevate the Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receiver room and offense with his impressive skill set, boasting five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, elite route-running abilities, and exceptional hands. Known for excelling in contested catches, he achieved a career-high 13 touchdowns in 2024, showcasing his talent as a competitor and leader. His professionalism and unwavering commitment to the team's success make him a valuable asset—but the financial implications raise concerns. Acquiring McLaurin would likely require significant trade capital, possibly a second and fifth-round pick, or even a first-rounder, which could disrupt the Steelers' plans for securing a future QB in the 2026 draft. With Washington reluctant to trade him, this pursuit poses risks and could leave the Steelers again on the sidelines of a potential deal.

Kaleb Johnson showcases impressive potential as an elite zone scheme runner, displaying excellent vision and a patient yet decisive running style that allows his blockers to execute their assignments effectively. However, he faces stiff competition from Kenneth Gainwell for playing time. While Gainwell is a solid backup with a knack for running the ball and decent skills in pass protection, Johnson's development is crucial for making an impact this season. Although his pass protection has room for improvement, particularly after some rough moments at the start of training camp, his determination and work ethic are evident.
