Is Mold Making You Sick? The Hidden Truth About Mycotoxins
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Clean eating, exercise, “normal” lab work, and still feeling like you got hit by a truck is one of the most common and most invalidating patterns I see. I’m pulling back the curtain on a root cause many people never consider: mold illness and mycotoxins from water-damaged buildings. If you have chronic fatigue, brain fog, headaches, sinus issues, anxiety that seems to come out of nowhere, or you crash for days after workouts, this conversation is for you.
I break down the difference between mold and mycotoxins, and why you can feel awful even if your allergist says you are not allergic to mold. We talk about how mycotoxins can dysregulate the immune system in a “gas pedal and brake pedal” way, driving inflammation while also leaving you prone to frequent infections, yeast overgrowth, or viral reactivation like EBV. I also explain why histamine intolerance can show up, with sudden reactions to wine, aged cheeses, leftovers, fragrances, and supplements you used to tolerate.
Then we connect the dots to the nervous system and mitochondria. I explain why so many people feel unlike themselves, stuck in fight or flight, unable to concentrate, and exhausted even after sleep. We dig into mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, why exercise intolerance is real, and why my approach focuses on balancing the terrain: opening drainage pathways, restoring minerals and nutrients, supporting gut and liver function, and only then considering binders and detox strategies.
Finally, I walk through functional medicine testing, including urine mycotoxin testing, organic acids testing, HTMA, and comprehensive blood work, plus how I use results to build a personalized plan instead of chasing symptoms. The Hidden Story Of Mold
SPEAKER_00Today I want to talk about the hidden story of mold, mycotoxins, and why some people never feel better. It was probably about two months ago that I had a patient come in, and this is what she said. I eat clean, I exercise, I have seen six specialists. My labs are normal. Why do I feel so awful? This is a conversation I have more often than I would like to say. I'm gonna call this patient Sarah. Um, Sarah came to Harmony Hub Health exhausted. She had brain fog so bad she'd forget what she even walked into the room for. Her joints hurt, she couldn't lose weight despite doing everything right. She had headaches, sinus congestion, anxiety that seemed to come out of nowhere, and she felt like she had the flu a lot of the days. Her primary care told her that she was just stressed out, so he sent her to a rheumatologist who thought it might be autoimmune. They then sent her to an allergist and they tested her and said, Well, you're not allergic to mold, but something wasn't adding up. Then she casually mentioned, Well, we did have a small leak in our basement a couple years ago, and that changed everything.
Mold vs Mycotoxins Explained
SPEAKER_00Here's where a lot of people are confused, okay? Mold is the organism. Mycotoxins are the toxic chemicals that certain molds produce. Think of it like this, okay? A bee is not the problem, it's the venom. So you don't have to be allergic to mold for mycotoxins to affect your body. These toxins can enter your body through breathing contaminated air or food contaminated with mold toxins or water damaged buildings, uh, dust inside homes, schools, or your workplace. Some people can clear these toxins easily. Others, especially with certain genetics or chronic illness, even Limes, autoimmune conditions, or impaired detox pathways, you can accumulate them over time. And that's when the symptoms begin. Mold doesn't even look the same in everyone. Some people have obvious respiratory symptoms, others never sneeze once. Instead, they develop chronic inflammation that affects nearly every system in the body. Common symptoms, let's list them: chronic fatigue, brain fog, poor memory, difficulty finding words, anxiety or panic attacks, depression, headaches or migraines, sinus congestion, chronic cough, dizziness, vertigo, ringing in the ears, muscle aches, joint pain, numbness or tingling, sleep disturbances, night sweats, histamine intolerance, food sensitivities, digestive issues, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, hormone imbalance, infertility, weight gain, exercise intolerance, frequent infections, skin rashes, itching, or new autoimmune symptoms. So I know what you're doing. You're sitting there and you're thinking, hey, that's basically every symptom imaginable. And guess what? You're not wrong because mycotoxins don't attack one organ, they disrupt the entire terrain.
Immune Confusion And Histamine Surges
SPEAKER_00So this is what's happening inside the body, okay? Mycotoxins, they just affect everything. First of all, they can hijack your immune system. One of the biggest misconceptions about mold is that it is simply an allergy. In reality, mycotoxins can have profound effects on the immune system, even in people who have no mold allergy at all. So your immune system has one job constantly scan your body for anything that doesn't belong. This could be bacteria, viruses, parasites, cancer cells, environmental toxins. Think of it like the security team at the airport. Okay, every day it's deciding this is safe, this is dangerous, attack, stand down. Now imagine that security team never gets a break. That's what chronic mycotoxin exposure can do. Instead of responding to a threat and then returning to normal, the immune system becomes stuck in a constant state of confusion. Research has shown that certain mycotoxins can activate inflammatory signaling pathways and increase the production of cytokines. That's the chemical messengers that tell your immune system to respond. In the short term, inflammation is protective. It's how your body fights infection and heals an injury. But when that inflammatory switch never turns off, problems begin to appear throughout the entire body. Patients often describe feeling like they have the flu every day, everything hurts, they're exhausted, the brain feels foggy, they wake up tired even though they slept all night. That's because inflammation doesn't stay in one location. It can travel throughout the entire body. Here's where mold becomes really frustrating. Some mycotoxins don't just overstimulate immunity. They can also impair it. This creates what I call the gas pedal and brake pedal effect. Parts of your immune system are flooring the gas pedal while other parts have one foot on the brake. What happens then? You may have chronic inflammation and autoimmune symptoms while at the same time catching every cold your kid brings home, struggling to recover from infections, or you could experience recurrent sinus infections, yeast overgrowth, or viral reactivations like Epstein Barr virus, EBV, or even shingles. Patients will often tell me, I feel inflamed all the time, but I also seem to get sick constantly. And both can be true. An overactive immune system doesn't always know when to stop. In genetically susceptible individuals, chronic immune activation may contribute to worsening autoimmune activity or more frequent flares. Mold exposure is not considered a proven cause of autoimmune disease, but it can be one of several factors that amplifies inflammation and immune dysregulation in people who are already susceptible. This is why many patients with conditions like Hashimoto's, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, um, inflammatory bowel disease, or multiple autoimmune diagnoses report worsening symptoms after prolonged exposure to water damage buildings. It's not necessarily creating the autoimmune disease, it's pouring gasoline on an already smoldering fire. Okay. Many mold patients also struggle with histamine intolerance. So the immune system releases histamines as part of its defense response. But chronic inflammation can leave this alarm system activated longer than it should be. So this is when you may notice flushing or itching or hives, anxiety, that rapid heart rate, um, food sensitivities or seasonal allergies that suddenly become worse. Um, sometimes you can all of a sudden have difficulty tolerating wine, ugh, um, aged cheeses, fermented foods, or leftovers. The body becomes increasingly reactive, not just to mold, but to foods, chemicals, fragrances, supplements, and medications that you used to tolerate. Fighting chronic inflammation is incredibly expensive from a metabolic standpoint. Your immune system consumes enormous amounts of nutrients and energy. It uses vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and cellular energy every single day to maintain the constant battle. Over time, the patient then develops nutrient deficiencies, impaired detoxification, mitochondrial dysfunction, hormone imbalances, and profound fatigue, not because the body is weak, but because it's been fighting an invisible battle for months or even years. One thing I tell my patients is I don't want to boost your immune system. I want to balance it. If your immune system is already overreacting, boosting it further can actually make your symptoms worse. Instead, our goal at Harmony Hub Health is to calm unnecessary inflammation, support healthy immune regulation, reduce the body's toxic burden, restore nutrient reserves, and create an environment where your immune system can finally do what it was designed to do, protect you without attacking you.
Brain Fog And Survival Mode
SPEAKER_00Um then that's just the immune system. We've only gotten started. Then we have the nervous system, and I think this is where mold really starts to make sense for patients. One of the hardest parts about mold is not just the fatigue, it's feeling like you're no longer yourself. I have people tell me I used to be the person who could juggle 10 things at once. Now I walk into a room and I forget why I'm there. I can't find words. I'm anxious and I don't know why. I don't even recognize myself anymore. Many start wondering if they have new ADHD. Um, I had one person ask me if she was getting dementia um or depression or um a lot of people are just told it's stress or depression. Um, and while there are many causes of these symptoms, chronic mycotoxin exposure is one factor that can contribute to inflammation and dysfunction within your nervous system. You know, your brain only makes up about 2% of your body weight. It consumes about 20% of your body's energy. Every thought, every memory, every heartbeat, every emotion, every movement depends on billions of nerve cells communicating with one another every second. That communication requires enormous amounts of oxygen, nutrients, healthy mitochondria, and balanced neurotransmitters. Mycotoxins can interfere with every one of those systems. Your brain has its own immune cells called microglia. Okay, think of them as the brain's maintenance crew. Normally they clean up damaged cells, remove debris, and protect the brain from infection. But chronic exposure to mycotoxins may keep these immune cells activated for a prolonged period of time. So instead of quietly cleaning house, they begin releasing inflammatory chemicals that can interfere with your normal brain function. So it's kind of like trying to work in an office where the fire alarm never stops ringing. Eventually, it's hard to concentrate on anything else. And patients can describe that as brain fog, difficulty concentrating, um, even forgetting conversations. They can lose words mid-sentence, they tell me they've become mentally slow, they can't make decisions, they can't multitask, and they feel very detached. One of my favorite ways to explain this is by thinking about that smoke detector. Imagine your smoke detector goes off because you burn dinner. That's exactly what it's supposed to do. Now imagine it keeps screaming for six months, even after the smoke is gone. Eventually, everything in your house becomes stressful because your brain never gets the signal that it's safe. This is why many patients experience that chronic illness. Mycotoxins can contribute to ongoing inflammation and physiological stress. And over time, your autonomic nervous system may remain biased towards that persistent fight or flight state in some people. Um, instead of shifting between stress and recovery, the body becomes trapped in survival mode, and that contributes to all of those symptoms. Your nervous system actually forgets how to relax. And those neurotransmitters, which are your brain's chemical messengers, they begin to suffer. But these neurotransmitters, they help you regulate your mood, your motivation, your focus, your memory, even your sleep, your energy, and your emotional resilience. Inflammation, oxidative stress, nutrient depletion, mitochondrial dysfunction, and chronic illness, they all interfere with healthy neurotransmitter production and signaling. The vagus nerve can also be effective, and the vagus nerve is one of the most important communication highways in your body. It helps you regulate your digestion, your heart rate, inflammation, your immune function, and your ability to shift into a calm, restorative state. When the nervous system remains under chronic stress, vagal tone can be reduced, making it harder to turn off the stress response. This is when digestive problems come up: constipation, bloating, reflux, heart palpitations, dizziness. Um, some people even feel exhausted after minor activity. Everything becomes harder because your body's rest and repair system is not functioning efficiently. This is one reason why our treatment plans at Harmony Hub Health is not just about removing toxins, it's about helping your nervous system feel safe again. Um throughout our 12-week protocols, I support the nervous system by reducing inflammation, restoring nutrient deficiencies, improving that mitochondrial function, balance your minerals, optimize your gut health. And often we combine some therapies like ozone therapy, pemp, iV nutrient therapy, um, and lifestyle strategies that encourage that parasympathetic activity, that rest and digest. You can't heal if your brain still believes you're in danger. Okay. Our goal is to not simply detox mycotoxins. I've seen all of those programs out there and I think they're doing it wrong. Our goal is to help your brain, your immune system, and your nervous system remember what health feels like. When that happens, patients often tell me something that never gets old hearing. Okay. It's this. I finally feel like me again. And that's
Mitochondria And Energy Theft
SPEAKER_00not it. Now, the next part is how mycotoxins affect your mitochondria. You guys know that's my favorite, favorite topics because it explains why some patients are exhausted even though they're sleeping, they're eating well, they're taking supplements. Um but instead of thinking of it as mold causes fatigue, what I explain is that it actually steals your body's ability to make energy. And if the immune system is your body's armor and your nervous system is the command center, then your mitochondria, these are the little tiny power plants. Every single cell in your body, except red blood cells, contains mitochondria. Some cells have hundreds, your heart has thousands, your brain has thousands. These tiny structures are responsible for producing ATP, the energy currency that powers virtually everything your body does. Without healthy mitochondria, your body cannot keep up. That's why you're so tired. One of the hallmark symptoms of mold is profound fatigue. Not the kind that improves after a good night's sleep. I'm talking about the kind where you wake up exhausted, taking a shower feels like a workout, the grocery trip requires a nap. Um, you cancel plans because you just don't have the energy. And one person actually told me it feels like someone unplugged my battery. And that's a really good accurate description. Your mitochondria produce energy through an incredibly complex process that requires oxygen, nutrients, healthy cell membranes, vitamins, minerals, and specialized enzymes. Certain mycotoxins have been shown in laboratory studies to interfere with mitochondrial function and increase oxidative stress, which can reduce the efficiency of energy production. Um, these little power plants normally they produce clean, efficient energy. Now, imagine someone throws sand into that machine. The power plant doesn't shut down, it just becomes slower, less efficient, and starts producing more pollution. That pollution comes in the form of oxidative stress. Every day, your cells naturally produce free radicals as they make energy. Normally, your body balances those free radicals with antioxidants like glutathione, vitamin C, CoQ10, selenium, and a lot of others actually. But chronic mycotoxin exposure tips that balance. Um, think of it as leaving a bicycle outside in the rain. A little rust is not a big deal. Years of exposure, eventually the entire machine struggles to work. And oxidative stress can damage your proteins, your cell membranes, your DNA, the mitochondria, the nerve cells. That's what starts this fatigue, inflammation, brain fog, accelerated aging, and slower recovery. Many patients say something that sounds completely backwards, and this is what I hear. Um, I know exercise is supposed to help, but every time I work out, I crash for two days. This makes perfect sense when mitochondria are not functioning well. Exercise increases your body's demand for ATP. Healthy mitochondria responds by making more energy. Damaged mitochondria, they just can't keep up. So instead of feeling energized after, you feel completely depleted. This is why patients develop exercise intolerance and post-exertional fatigue during chronic illness. It's not because they're lazy. Okay, their cellular engines are struggling to produce enough fuel. And not every organ is affected equally. The tissues that require the most energy often show symptoms first. So that's the brain, um, the brain fog, the poor concentration, memory problems, then it's the heart, the palpitations, the poor stamina, then there's the muscles, the heavy legs, the muscles aching, weakness, slow recovery, then the immune system. Um, a healthy immune system requires tremendous amounts of energy. So when mitochondrial function declines, your immune system has fewer resources to defend against infections while also regulating inflammation. And your mitochondria cannot make energy without raw materials. They depend on adequate levels of so many different things: magnesium, B vitamins, iron, coC10, um, alpha lipoic acid, antioxidants, amino acids, healthy fats, which I find most people are missing, and oxygen. This is one reason why patients don't recover just by simply removing the exposure. Okay. Your body also has to rebuild what has been depleted. One of the biggest goals of our mycotoxin protocol is not just removing the toxin, it's helping your cells make energy again. That's why we focus on restoring the environmental mitochondria that you need to thrive. Okay. And depending on your testing and symptoms in your plan to help with mitochondrial recovery, we might add in ozone therapy. You know, ozone therapy can improve oxygen utilization, support that mitochondrial signaling, and help reduce oxidative stress. Many patients notice improved energy and recovery as their cellular function begins to improve. Um, we may throw in some IV nutrient therapy. You know, energy production requires vitamins and minerals. Um, customized IV therapy helps replenish nutrients needed for mitochondrial function while bypassing potential digestive absorption issues. Um, then we can do targeted mitochondrial nutrients. Rather than handing every patient the same supplement, I personalize support based on your symptoms, your functional testing, and your nutritional needs. So this may include nutrients that support ATB production, antioxidant defenses, um, or cellular repair. And then we have the HTMA or hair tissue mineral analysis. Minerals are the spark plugs of your metabolism. Without adequate magnesium, manganese, copper, zinc, potassium, and other key minerals, mitochondria simply cannot function efficiently. So HTMA helps me identify those imbalances so I can rebuild cellular energy from the inside out. And perhaps the most important step is removing the constant stress on the mitochondria. So as inflammation decreases and the toxic burden is reduced, many patients notice that their endurance, their mental clarity, and resilience gradually return. Um, I don't just want you to have more energy. I want your cells to remember how to make it. True healing isn't about borrowing energy from caffeine, stimulants, or just sheer willpower. It's about restoring the tiny power plants inside every cell so your body can generate energy naturally again. And when that happens, I hear people say Um, I'm not just surviving the day. I'm living that might have been one of my favorites. I'm trying to remember think back of what they said. Um, or if they just say that they finally have their life back. I mean, sure, I can give you things that just give you temporary energy, but at Harmony Hub Health, we're not trying to make you feel more energized, we're working to help your cells actually produce more energy.
Detox Overload And Drainage First
SPEAKER_00At Harmony Hub Health, I do have a terrain-first philosophy. And if I'm talking about mold, um, instead of me explaining that mold fills you with toxins, I want to kind of explain it as mold overloads your body's natural detoxification systems. And this might, you know, help you understand a little bit more. Um, one of the biggest myths I hear, and I can see why people might say that, is you know, my body detoxes itself. So why should mold be a problem? And the truth is, your body is incredibly good at detoxification every second of every day. Your liver transforms toxins into compounds that can be safely removed. Your kidneys filter your blood, your intestines eliminate waste, your lymphatic system transports cellular debris. Okay, your skin helps eliminate certain compounds through sweat. Even your lungs help remove volatile substances. Your body was beautifully designed for detoxification. I love the human body, but it wasn't designed to handle an endless stream of toxins while also fighting chronic inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, poor sleep, chronic stress, infections, and a water-damaged environment. Eventually the bucket's gonna overflow. Um and detoxification system, I explain to a lot of people, especially those I see with MTHFR. Um, and what I tell them is, you know, your detox system is like a city. Okay, the liver is the recycling center, the kidneys are the water treatment plant, the lymphatic system is the garbage truck, the intestines are the waste disposal service, the skin is just another exit route. Now imagine garbage trucks, they stop showing up. Okay, the recycling center slows down, the roads become congested, waste starts piling up on every street corner. The problem isn't that the city suddenly forgot how to function, it's that the system has become so overwhelmed. And that's what can happen when the body is under a constant burden of chronic mycotoxin exposure. Your liver has to work overtime. Okay, your liver is one of the hardest working organs in your body. It transforms potentially harmful substances into compounds that can be eliminated through bile, urine, or stool. You have to know I'm very passionate about the liver. My first nurse practitioner job, um, what was it, 2011? My first nurse practitioner job was on a transplant team. And I'd probably still be there if I liked some of my coworkers, but that's a whole nother podcast as well. But the process of transforming those harmful substances requires amino acids, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, selenium, glutathione, healthy mitochondria, adequate protein, and ATP. So detoxification is not passive, it is incredibly energy intensive. And if nutrients are depleted or mitochondria aren't producing enough energy, detoxification becomes less efficient. Now, when I was working transplant, I knew none of this. This is not something that you learn. Um, it wasn't even a thought. So I really do think I was put in that environment to really learn the liver, um, not knowing of what I was going to go through in the next few years. So, one of your most important tools your body uses to defend against oxidative stress is glutathione. We often call it the body's master antioxidant. Glutathione helps neutralize free radicals, it supports your liver detoxification and protects cells from oxidative damage. So, research does suggest that chronic toxin exposure, including mycotoxins, can increase oxidative stress and raise your body's demand for glutathione. So, over time, some people can struggle to keep up with that demand. Without enough glutathione, um, it's kind of like asking firefighters to battle a forest fire with empty water tanks. Now that I said that out loud, I kind of feel insensitive to Canada. Um, I just got off track there. Um, but this is one of the reasons why patients start a mold detox and immediately feel terrible. Um, sometimes I hear, I thought detox was supposed to make me feel better. But here's why that can happen: that you can feel worse during a detox. If you start pulling toxins out of tissues before your body is ready to eliminate them, those toxins can continue circulating until they leave the body. So let's go back to our city. If your liver is sluggish, if bile isn't flowing well, if you're constipated, if your lymphatic system is not moving, even if you're dehydrated, your body may struggle to keep up with increased workload. So the answer isn't to push harder, you just want to improve the pathways first. This is one of the biggest differences in how I approach mycotoxin illness at Harmony Hub Health. Before we focus on removing toxins, I ask an important question. Can your body actually eliminate what we're asking it to release? This is why the first phase of our 12-week protocols focuses on supporting the body's natural drainage pathways. Depending on your needs, this may include improving your liver function, your bile flow, kidney support and hydration, bowel regularity, um, lymphatic circulation, or cellular energy production, mineral balance, and gut health. When these systems are working well, detoxification becomes far more efficient and patients often tolerate treatment much better. Okay. Binders can be an important tool for some patients because they help capture certain toxins in the digestive tract so they can be eliminated rather than reabsorbed, but binders don't fix the underlying problem. If your drainage pathways are congested, simply adding more binders is kind of like putting a bigger trash can in front of the house when the garbage truck still is not gonna come. We might collect more waste, but it still has to leave the neighborhood. That's why our treatment plans often combine binders with nutritional support, hydration, gut restoration, liver support, and therapies that encourage healthy circulation and lymphatic movement. Okay. Throughout our 12-week mycotoxin recovery program, I do use personalized combination of therapies to support detoxification. I don't want to force it. My belief is that your body already knows how to heal. Our job is not to force you to detox. Um, our job is to remove the obstacles that are preventing it. So when we improve nutrition, restore minerals, calm inflammation, support your mitochondria, um, optimize your gut health, and open the body's natural drainage pathways, detoxification becomes something your body can do more effectively on its own. True healing is not about pushing your body harder, it's about giving it the tools it has been missing all along. That's the difference between chasing toxins and rebuilding the terrain that they disrupt.
Hormones On A Stress Budget
SPEAKER_00Now, I think hormones are one of the most overlooked consequences of mold exposure. Um, a lot of women come to me convinced that they're just in perimenopause, and men think that they're just getting older. When the real issue is that chronic inflammation and illness are disrupting hormone signaling. So let's talk about that and how mycotoxins affect your hormones. And I bring this up because I've had a lot of hormone consultation patients that come in, and maybe they already tried BHRT and they felt great for the first month or two, and then they get right back where they started. So sometimes that requires a deeper dive and why the hormones are struggling in the first place. Okay, hormones don't work in isolation, they are constantly communicating with your brain, your immune system, your thyroid, your adrenal glands, your liver, your gut, your ovaries, even your testes if you have them, and your fat cells. So when one system is under chronic stress, every other system feels it. And that's why many people exposed to mold don't just experience fatigue or brain fog. They also notice hormone symptoms they never had before. And I think my analogy for this one um is something that I think about all the time, but not even in mold or mycotoxins, but in a lot of different wrenches that get thrown into our body. So imagine your body is a business. Um, when everything runs smoothly, there's plenty of money, you can invest in growth, you have maintenance, and you can work on future projects. Now imagine that business suddenly faces a major financial crisis. What happens? Your budget shifts, resources are diverted toward just survival. Okay, your body works the same way. When it's fighting chronic inflammation, managing oxidative stress, and trying to eliminate toxins, it's prioritizing survival over optimization. So reproduction, I talk about this with fertility patients, metabolism, libido, muscle building, even hair growth, they all become lower priorities. Your body is not failing, it is adapting. So your hypothalamus and pituitary gland, they're often called the master control centers of the endocrine system. They constantly communicate with your thyroid, your adrenals, your ovaries, your testes. Together, these organs form what we call the endocrine axis. Chronic inflammation, poor sleep, nutrient deficiencies, and physiological stress associated with long-term illness disrupts that communication. Okay. It's running a company on a poor Wi-Fi. The departments are still there, they're just not communicating very well. And I mean, you could always message me and tell me my analogies are horrible. I I try to relate it so people understand what I'm saying, but then sometimes I'm like, why did I just say that out loud? Okay. Cortisol is your stress hormone. And when your body senses danger, it releases cortisol. Short-term cortisol is so helpful, it keeps you alert, it raises your blood sugar. When you need that quick energy, it reduces immediate threats. But mold exposure isn't a one-day event. It's often months or years of ongoing physiological stress. Over time, cortisol regulation becomes disrupted. Um, this is when some patients can feel wired but tired. Others feel exhausted from the moment they wake up. Um, some can feel afternoon crashes or waking between that 2 to 4 a.m. window, higher anxiety, poor stress tolerance, their blood sugar fluctuates. And it's not simply high cortisol. Um, it's an entire stress response system that is struggling to regulate itself. The thyroid is often one of the first hormone systems that patients think about because so many symptoms they just overlap. Fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, constipation, feeling cold, dry skin, brain fog. Okay. While mold does not directly cause thyroid disease, chronic inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, and illness can influence your thyroid hormone production or the conversion or the transport and cellular responsiveness. So this is why we look way beyond that TSH and evaluate the bigger picture when appropriate. Um, you don't want to just get thrown on thyroid medication by your doctor when the root cause of the whole thing has not been identified. Um, and when the body is focused on survival, reproduction becomes less of a priority. So women can experience irregular periods or more painful cycles or worsening PMS, um, increased perimenopause symptoms, hot flashes, low libido, vaginal dryness, fertility challenges. The men, they may have lower testosterone, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle mass, slower recovery, um, even increased abdominal weight gain. And again, mold isn't necessarily the sole cause of these changes. It's the chronic inflammation, the stress, the poor sleep, and impaired cellular energy, it can all contribute to hormonal imbalance. Okay. That liver that we talked about, it is responsible for helping metabolize and clear hormones, including estrogen. So if the liver is busy dealing with an increased toxic burden, hormone metabolism can become less efficient in some people. And this can contribute to symptoms with estrogen imbalance, especially when combined with gut dysfunction and inflammations. So, yes, I can simply prescribe hormones, and sometimes that's absolutely appropriate anyway. In fact, biodentical hormone replacement therapy can be life-changing for the right patient. But if we only replace hormones without addressing the underlying inflammation or toxic burden, um gut health, mitochondrial dysfunction, mineral deficiencies, and chronic stress that are affecting the endocrine system, we're often treating the smoke instead of the fire. So at Harmony Hub Health, my goal is not simply to normalize hormone levels on a lab report, it's to create an environment where your body can communicate more effectively again. You have to remember that hormones are messengers. If every room on the house is on fire, shouting louder is not going to solve the problem. You have to put out the fires. And that's exactly how I approach hormone health. Instead of asking why or which hormone is low, it's what is preventing your hormones from doing its job. Because when we restore the terrain, hormones often become part of the healing story, not the entire story. So I went through a lot to tell how mycotoxins affect all of these different systems of your body.
Testing That Builds A Roadmap
SPEAKER_00So what do we do? How do we test for it? And this is where functional medicine becomes incredibly valuable. Okay, I don't want to just guess. So one of the first questions I get asked is, well, how do you know if mold is actually affecting me? And the answer is, well, we test for it. One of my favorite tools is the Mosaic Diagnostics Ur and mycotoxin test because it allows us to look for evidence that your body is eliminating certain mold toxins. Notice I didn't say it tells us whether you have mold growing inside your body. And I didn't say it tells us whether your house has mold. Those are completely different questions. The urine mycotoxin test answers if your body is currently excreting measurable mycotoxins. And that information combined with your symptoms, your history, your home or workplace exposure, and additional testing helps me build a personalized treatment plan. So certain molds produce toxic compounds called mycotoxins. And when you're exposed to these toxins, your body attempts to process and eliminate them. As they're broken down and excreted, some can be detected in urine. And the mosaic test measures dozens of clinically relevant mycotoxins from several major groups that are commonly associated with environmental exposure. Some examples include toxins produced by Aspergillus, um Fusarium, Penicillium, black mold, or um stachybolterus, um, and other toxins producing molds. I don't even know how to pronounce some of them. But rather than looking for mold spores, I'm looking for the toxic compounds that molds can produce. And that's an important distinction. It actually surprises some patients when I tell them that mold allergy test is not enough. Um traditional allergy testing evaluates whether your immune system makes an allergic, like IgE-mediated response to mold proteins. So urine mycotoxin testing is looking for something completely different. Um, you can have a mold allergy without significant mycotoxin exposure. You can have evidence of mycotoxin exposure without having a mold allergy. You can have both or you can have neither. These tests answer different clinical questions. Um, so that's why someone can tell me my allergist said I wasn't allergic to mold. But they can still have symptoms that warrant a broader evaluation for environmental illness. Another question I get is does a positive test mean mold is growing inside of me? And I say not necessarily. A positive urine mycotoxin test indicates that your body is excreting detectable mycotoxins. It does not by itself prove that mold is actively growing in your body. It also doesn't tell us exactly where or when the exposure occurred. Okay, the source could be at your workplace, school, um, a water-damaged home, in stored belongings, um, certain contaminated foods, past exposures depending on your individual circumstance and ongoing elimination. That's why we spend so much time taking a detailed environmental history. Testing is only one piece of the puzzle. A negative test doesn't always mean mold exposure isn't part of the picture, also. So several factors can influence whether mycotoxins are detected in urine, including the timing of exposure, differences in individual metabolism and excretion, your hydration status, and the specific toxins being measured. Some tests don't measure for all of them. So some patients may benefit from additional evaluation if their history strongly suggests environmental illness. And this is one reason why we never treat lab results in isolation. I like to treat the person. The mosaic urine mycotoxin isn't just about saying yes or no. It really helps me personalize your care. So combined with your clinical history and any other testing we decide to do on your specific case, the results can help me understand whether mycotoxin exposure can be contributing to your symptoms. I can identify patterns that may support a more targeted treatment strategy, and I can prioritize which body systems need the most support. I can also determine whether aggressive detoxification is appropriate, or whether we first need to focus on drainage, gut health, minerals, and cellular energy. And I can monitor changes over time as needed. So this allows us to move beyond guessing and create a treatment plan that's tailored to your body. Okay. One of the biggest differences at Harmony Hub Health is that we never rely on a single lab. I like to ask big questions. How has this exposure affected your body? And that's why I often pair mycotoxin testing to other functional assessments. Um, one of them is the OTS test. Um, this is the organic acid test, and it helps me evaluate your mitochondrial function, your oxidative stress, your detox pathways, your neurotransmitter metabolism, nutrient deficiencies, and lets me see if there's been a yeast or a fungal overgrowth. So it gives me insight into how your cells are functioning, not just whether you've been exposed to a toxin. The HTMA or hair tissue mineral analysis, um, you know, detoxification depends on healthy mineral balance. And the hair tissue mineral analysis helps me identify patterns that may affect energy production, stress resilience, nervous system function, and your body's ability to detoxify efficiently. Um and then there's a comprehensive functional blood work, which I usually start with that anyway, where I look at inflammation, your liver function, nutrient status, thyroid health, hormones, immune function, and oxidative stress. When I put all of those pieces together, I begin to understand not just what happened to your body, but why your body is struggling to recover. And one of the things I love about functional medicine is that testing gives me a roadmap. But a roadmap is not the destination. My goal isn't simply to identify mycotoxins. Okay, my goal is to understand how you've affected your immune system, your nervous system, the mitochondria, your hormones, the gut, your detoxification pathways, and that overall terrain. Um, when I understand the whole story, I can build a treatment plan that's as unique as the person that's sitting in front of me. Um, and that's exactly what my 12 week mycotoxin recovery program is designed to do.
Sarah’s Turnaround And Next Steps
SPEAKER_00So back to Sarah. After testing, um her urine mycotoxin panel showed significant mold toxin exposure. Her organic acids test revealed impaired mitochondrial function and Elevated oxidative stress. So instead of jumping straight into aggressive detoxification, we focused on restoring her terrain. We supported drainage pathways. I balanced her minerals. We improved her gut health. We optimized her nutrition and we added some targeted supplementation. We even incorporated some ozone therapy and IV support for a short amount of time. And over the following months, her brain fog lifted. She had energy again. Her joint pain did improve. She was able to exercise without crashing afterward. And in the first time for a long time, she told me she felt hopeful. Now we're still working, but she's been a great case study so far. Umness is real, all right? Mycotoxins can affect nearly every system in the body. And many people suffer for years before anyone even considers environmental exposure. I have seen people just go to weight loss centers because they think it's just weight. I have seen many, many, many people just go to a center for bioidentical hormones because they felt their hormones were off. Um but you know, if if you've been told your labs are normal, but your body is telling you otherwise, it is worth asking different questions. You know, could your environment be contributing to your symptoms? Um, at Harmony Hub Health, we don't chase symptoms. I like to look for root causes. Sometimes the answer isn't a medication. Okay, most of the time, all of the time, it's not another medication. Sometimes it's hidden behind the walls of your home. And sometimes finding that answer is the first step towards finally feeling like yourself again. If you're ready to investigate, or if you suspect mold exposure, or you simply want a deeper look into why you don't feel well, schedule a functional medicine consultation at harmonyhubhealth. Together we'll uncover the root cause and build a personalized plan to restore your health from the inside out. You can find us at www.harmonyhubhealth.com. Your body is incredibly intelligent. Every symptom is a message, not a character flaw. Our job isn't to silence those messages, it's to understand what your body has been trying to tell you all along. Whether it's mold, mycotoxins, hormones, gut health, mineral imbalances, or something else entirely. Remember that healing doesn't happen by chasing symptoms. It happens by uncovering the root cause and rebuilding the terrain so your body can do what it's designed to do. Healing is a journey and is not a sprint.
