Brian Henry Martin: Welcome to The Wonder Cinema Podcast Series Two... Sam, we're back, but we're not in a cinema!
Dr Sam Manning: We're not Brian, we are moving from cinema to home video. We're looking at the remarkable story of the rise and fall of home video in Northern Ireland.
BHM: Now Sam, I remember the arrival of video, VHS it was so exciting, but do you remember it?
Dr Sam: I'm a bit younger than you Brian, I don't remember the video boom but I definetly grew up watching videos in the 90s.
BHM: Okay Sam, so why are we going on this journey? What can we learn and discover by looking at the rise and fall of VHS?
Dr Sam: Well, its a really interesting story, particulary in Northern Ireland, people had the troubles on their doorsteps, it was difficult economic times and we found one article that asked 'Is VHS the Armchair Answer to the Troubles?". Which I think is a really interesting question and one we are going to look at in the series as Northern Ireland was ripe for the home video revolution.
BHM: All this Sam and we are going to launch the series with a screening of a videotape in a cinema in Belfast. Now tell us what's happening?
Dr Sam: Yeh Brian, we are hosting a screening of The Princess Bride at Queens Film Theatre in Belfast on Sunday 24th August.
BHM: And we are also going to record a live epsiode of the podcast, so if you would like to come to that, get your tickets at QFT. And if not episode one of the series will drop that day, Sunday 24th of August. So Sam, this is all very exciting.
